Has to be one of the best Chinese restaurants in Fox Lake. It might be the only one. Golden Dragon is a pretty old looking place that may look like it could be closed, but it's still open for business. Pretty dank inside, but every Chinese restaurant like this it seems to have food better than it looks, and the same thing for here. The prices are pretty good for portions. At lunch we came in and got a table with no wait at all. It only had a couple other tables occupied, and one of those was by a few employees. The atmosphere is pretty lame to be honest. Got a couple orders anyway. There's a few things for vegetarians. It's about $10 for an entree. I got the Golden Tofu. This item was actually unfamiliar. I had never heard of this before. This had a thick kind of soy sauce that was quite salty. Lots of vegetables in it. There was broccoli, carrots, and onions. Got to say it was better than expected. Ordered here on 01/27/26 for my wife and I. Her food was fine, mine wasnt. I ordered Sweet n Sour Shrimp and plain fried rice. My Sweet and Sour Shrimp was inedible. The outside breading was darker than normal, like it was fried twice. The breading was also very crispy, when biting the breading cracked and broke off. Some pieces I couldnt even bite. Tried dunking shrimp longer than normal, didnt help. The fried rice tasted oily and half of rice was refrigerator cold. I wasnt able to eat any so it went in garbage. This was the worst Chinese food I have ever had. Considering this restaurant use to be so good, but since the original owners sold, this to new management, they have taken an outstanding institution , and ruined it. I ordered on Christmas Eve, as so many other establishments are closed, and what appeared to be a professionally run place, quickly changed my opinion. I was told to get there in 20-30 minutes, and when I arrived, there were at least a dozen other people, all waiting for their orders, so I then proceeded to wait an additional 45 minutes. When I got home with the 3 items, only to find 2 of them were wrong, I called the restaurant, only to get the runaround, spoke to a manager that wanted me to bring back the order, but I was not going to spend the night driving back and forth trying to get the correct order. But we ordered one chicken and one beef dish and I have to leave this review because both orders we got were honestly about 80% vegetables. They still have plastic tapped up everywhere for Covid but you can see through the plastic and see a huge mess, cobwebs, and more. In all respects, I feel it is a flashback to what Chinese-American places were like prior to the Asia New Cuisine movement got a foothold in North America. This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in the area! I have been going here for many years and always enjoy my meal. I especially like that you can use their website for online ordering, its very convenient. My husband and I typically get an order of egg rolls, crabmeat delight (crab rangoon), Mongolian Beef, and General Tso's chicken; it's enough food for dinner and leftovers for lunch the next day. 45 years ago I used to go to this place on New Year's Day for my hangover recovery meal and it was ok. I go back now from time to time and I swear to you the place hasn't seen the business end of a vacuum cleaner in years, the building is falling apart and shown no signs of any maintenance having been done. There are 2 doors you have to open to enter and I get the willies every time I have to touch them they are so gross. I spent $36 today on my meal and it was so bad I threw it away half way thru lunch. Prices are not bad because Fox Lake is a depressed area but the food is going to kill you. I really want to like this place because I can't get a decent Chinese takeout meal to save my life. Hell...I would consider defecting to China if I could just get a decent egg foo young..........Used to be decent food served in a tomain pit now the food sucks too......Forget this place and let it die. This is one of the best Chinese restaurants in the area I must say. The food is very tasty, service is good and prices are reasonable for what you get. I always order to take out and the way the package everything is very clean and packed to ensure nothing will spill. I can't say enough good things about Golden Dragon. I've been going here since I was a kid and I love it! Granted, I'm white as sour cream so I really don't know whether or not this is "authentic" but I will say that it's tasty, filling, and relatively cheap. We used to get the shrimp fried rice, mongolian beef, eggrolls, egg drop soup, and I think sweet and sour pork. I love this restaurant. Ok so went for the second time. We walked in at 7:50 and she informed us they close at 9!!! The hot tea tasted like it had soap in it. I asked fo red sweet and sour because I like the egg roll dipped in it. They wouldn't let me have any. They told me they make the sauce each time someone orders sweet and sour. We come here regularly for our Chinese food fix. I always get the broccoli chicken dish, along with egg drop soup, egg rolls, and pot stickers. All of those items have never let me down. However, I have tried a few items on the menu but wasn't impressed (so I can understand the low ratings). As much as I enjoyed the way things were under the previous management, things are even better now! It has been a while since we've ordered from Golden Dragon. We knew it was now under new ownership and we were curious to see if and how things had changed. We ordered our usual order: Mongolian Beef, Vegetable Egg Foo Young, Sweet and Sour Chicken, Vegetable Fried Rice and two orders of Egg Rolls. The price was around the same as it used to be. Maybe a bit more but after we ate, we realized it was totally worth the extra few dollars! There seemed to be more food than before and the quality seemed a bit higher. It was nice to find chunks of broccoli, pea pods, and eggs in the Vegetable Fried Rice instead of just a few peas and some little cubes of carrots. The Egg Foo Young seemed a bit thinner than before but that seemed to allow more of them to fit in the container, which was a pleasant surprise. The Sweet and Sour sauce and the chicken were in separate containers which was much appreciated. There was a lot of chicken and none of it was soggy from too much sauce as the sauce was in a different container. The Mongolian Beef and Egg Rolls were also very filling and quite a delight. New brochures state that this restaurant has changed owners. We ate inside at a plain formica-type table. Diet Coke was brought in cans by the proprietors' children. An owner passed the time by watching t.v. behind the counter. One of the kids stopped by our table a couple of times to make sure we were enjoying the meal. A shrimp dish was tasty, although heavy on vegetables. There was enough to take some home. Fortune cookies in cellophane was the only dessert. It appears that take-out is most popular here. The food is okay. Okay as to use a coupon. But the person, a female, who takes the orders is AWFUL. She does not understand anything you tell her. I am not sure what the negative reviews are all about. Aaron rambled on and on about his bad experience and a door in a different location. The door is in the same location so I am not sure what he is talking about, though the counter was moved which is fine. Though I don't go out for food often, I have been coming to this restaurant since I moved to Fox Lake in 2009. To me the food is the same with the new owner who is a nice women speaks fluent english. The restaurant retains the same old school look which is fine by me. I don't know if they initially had a new cook during the transition, but when I was there in March it was the previous cook as I asked and could tell by the by the rock music coming out of the kitchen. I was satisfied with my food though it may have been a smaller portion than before. They were doing good business the night I was there with half the tables full of diners. I'm giving this restaurant two stars instead of one because I have eaten there without incident in the past. Unfortunately, recently we ordered takeout, and I got food poisoning. We ordered different items and I was the only one that got sick, I was the only one that had hot and sour soup and Szechuan tofu, so it was definitely the hot and sour soup or the tofu. I can say without question it was food poisoning because I started getting the stomach cramps and vomiting about 3 hours later, and for 24 hours I could only keep small sips of water down. If I drank more than that it would come right back up. On the second day weak and dehydrated but started feeling better. Please remember ANY restaurant can have a one-time incident, so if you've been going there, continue to do so. I, however, well not have a craving for Chinese food for a long long time, LOL! read more
