We usually don't go out to buffets all that often but this place was recommended by my little brother. It is on the corner spot of a small little strip in Mchenry to start. There was quite a bit of folks there so obviously it's a known and respected establishment in town. You walk into a clean establishment and you pay for the amount of people eating. I believe that we paid $28 for the 2 of us before tip which i felt was rather fair for a legitimate all you can eat chinese buffet. After you pay you go find whichever seating you would like/ can find. We chose a booth which was nice as we prefer them because both of our backs are bad so it was nice to sit comfortably. The food is mainly chinese throughout besides the dessert section which had a nice spread. They even had a little bit of pizza and mac and cheese available which is good if you have a younger one with you maybe not willing to take on chinese food just yet. The food was ok. It was not bad by any means, but it also did not check my box for being above average. It just tasted like middle of the road chinese food, which mind you in a buffet setting is totally fine with me especially considering you can just select items you enjoy more than others. They also have to prep and cook large amounts of different items quickly too so i was not necessarily expecting everything to be super tip top tasting. If i had to choose a word for the food it would be serviceable for sure and there was a ton of it! I am rating this spot a 4/5 stars this time around because you have to put everything into perspective. The food itself was not a true 4/5 but you do have to know what you're getting yourself into when you come through the doors. You pay a rather cheap price for a crap ton of food! We left stuffed and had a good time which in my book is what really counts , again considering the price! So all in all if you are in the area, i would totally recommend this to anyone maybe looking to save a few dollars and get a ton of food as well. This is a really decent buffet. Fresher food than a lot of other places. The hot and sour soup is really good but not real spicy. The servers and bussers are really efficient and offer refills of your drinks. It's a casual, family friendly place that we have returned to regularly. read more

In my opinion, the Grand Buffet is without doubt the best Chinese buffet in the Chicagoland area...and I am pretty sure that I've tried almost all of them due to the nature of my job. The food is always flavorful and fresh - not wilted or soggy from being on the steam table all day. They offer a wide selection of well-prepared Chinese and American dishes at a price that is usually 40% less than other buffets. For example, their take-out price during lunch time is only $4.99 per pound...1/2 of everyone else! The place is clean (no sticky table-tops here) with good service and a friendly politeness. I love good Chinese buffets when I can find one, this one is as good as eating in China (I have). First plate, I grab some salad bar, a cup of soup (4 choices, I like egg drop), and sample a bite of the milder tastes, mostly the seafoods, salmon, shrimp, squid, scallops, crab (scallops and crab may be fake, but still tasty), and an egg roll, maybe a spring roll and a house special. The variety is great. No need to pile it on, it'll get cold. Second plate, more of the treasures from the first round, more salmon, more crab, some spinach with cheese, add some sauteed mushrooms, some stuffed mushroom caps, Honey chicken, Teryaki chicken, some sweet sour chicken on white rice, some Lo Mein noodles. Third plate, the stronger tastes, the Mongolian Beef, BBQ beef. Fourth trip. Desert. I grab a soup bowl, drop a couple of chocolate chip pastries in the bottom, put some chocolate/vanilla ice cream swirls on top. Let's break this down a bit. The Staff: Always pleasant. They all take their job seriously, there is no time for goofing off or flirting, they work. And they work hard. The cashier is always professional and courteous, which is good. And another lady is quick to offer us a soda pop choice before we even get to the buffet, then she brings the drinks to us and refills as needed. Awesome! The Buffet: Hard to judge a buffet since if there are a lot of people eating, then it is hard to keep all the different food trays full. But my visit here did not disappoint. It was a Saturday, around 7:30 pm and I did not have a hard time finding food to choose from, nice job! Ordering to go: I order at least once a week the Sweet and Sour Chicken and pork fried rice combo, with no veggies and I add eggs. They always make the food exactly the same and they make a lot of it. Very good! My meal is flavorful and well packaged and presented. Plus it is done in like 10 minutes or so, which is great. I don't know why we keep going back here. We always go between 5 and 6 what should be the dinner rush. I have never seen this place busy except for when they first opened years ago. Anyway, you can see the steam coming up from the buffet tables but the food is never hot, unless it has just come out of the kitchen. If you want something that is not a standard item that everyone likes, you can bet it's been sitting there all day. One of my favorite items is the Peanut Butter Chicken. It's usually sitting around for a while, sure they come around and stir it to make it look fresh but you can tell it's not. They do this with a lot of the items. The thing I do when I want fresh Peanut Butter Chicken is go up and make several trips and take the old stuff out and bury it on my plate with napkins. When it's all gone, they finally make a fresh batch. There is nothing here that blows me away enough to recommend anything. I would go somewhere else if I could find somebody else with Peanut Butter Chicken. I only gave two stars because the waitress was always there to fill our drinks. read more

There are some dishes that are good here and for the price you can't beat that. If you drink hot tea just make your own from the tea bags and hot water they have. They have pre made hot tea but it's super weak it tastes mostly like just hot water and a hint of tea flavor. They clean the tables quickly. Every time I came back from the buffet my old plate was already gone. They seem to keep a close eye on the dishes since they're replenished when needed. The temperature in the place was super hot. I'm always cold in restaurants that I always bring a sweater with me. So when I say it's hot it really is hot. The bussers are polite. read more
