Been here several times and haven't been disappointed... yet. Some reviews had a different experience but mine has always been a good one. Food prepared hot and served timely. Basic Chinese lunch fare that comes with the basic rice and chowmein options. Service is hurried because there is only one person serving, the owner. Restaurant is always clean as is the restrooms. I had the broccoli with cashews and general's chicken. Both were delicious. I especially like the broccoli. It had shredded carrots and some other shredded vegetables and a light delicious sauce, though quite spice for me. I just wiped my nose and kept eating because it was so good. read more

Why oh why can we not get consistently good Chinese food in Jackson? or Martell? or Sutter Creek? But NOOOO, we have to go to Ione or to Wok N Roll in Pine Grove, or the Thai place for consistency and the last three times at the Dragon there was something wrong every single time. Today there was way too much sugar in the beef special, even in the soup which was very odd, and the iced tea was too weak. They also are guilty of using spaghetti in the chow mein, a practice we really dislike although many do it these days. Stopped by on the way home from Lake Tahoe. What a find. This little hole in the wall had the typical dishes one would expect from a Chinese food restaurant however the execution of the meals is what stands out. We had the fried calamari appetizer which had the salt and pepper flavoring. It was so good that we ate all the onions and drizzled some of the savory oils on our mushu dish which was good as well. I've eaten here four times now since the new owners have taken over. I do find the restaurant itself clean and organized and a very pleasant place to spend an hour, or so, having a meal. The people there are friendly, polite and professional. The Golden Dragon couldn't be more convenient and located within a nice, comprehensive small-town shopping center. I was careful not to say "enjoying a meal." The food is fresh, likely wholesome, and always hot when it arrives at my table, directly from their woks. But most of the food itself is not really enjoyable... The problem is that the food is not comprised of the rainbow of flavors that define Chinese cooking. I'm speaking of their main courses; the soups are great, as are their egg rolls and various side dishes that I've tried were all great. But their main courses all taste alike -- as if they have spent all day in a crockpot -- or only one flavor comes through. For example, my last meal there was their hot garlic chicken. I tasted NO garlic, only the lovely bite of ginger -- just ginger; no other flavoring came through. Typically when dining in Chinese restaurants I have always enjoyed an explosion of flavor from a variety of sources with each forkful. (Yeah, still struggling with chopsticks after so many years.) I realize that I sound as if I'm a professional food reviewer -- I'm not. I really had not appreciated the way that you do get a blast of flavor from all the various ingredients. It was only the absence of individual and distinct flavors that made me aware of that particular quality. I returned a second and third time to Golden Dragon still trying to decipher my reaction. Cashew chicken - the chicken was cooked yesterday or before, the vegetables were cut in very large pieces, to big to get in your mouth and weren't cooked through. OK, I've pretty much given up on the idea of having good chinese food in Amador County. Also, to all of you that are like, "Oh just drive to BFE, they just have the best....!!!" Well, yes, when I am in Effing Los Angeles, or Stockton, guess what? I will eat good Chinese Food there. But I'm not there 7 out of 7 days a week. I'm in Amador. So I want good Amador chinese food. And until today, I've eaten at every Chinese Restaurant Amador has to offer and they all sucked. But today. Today I tried Golden Dragon. I liked it. It was good. It felt fresh. It wasn't gross. It wasn't mush. It wasn't tired vegetables or rubbery meat. I ordered the Orange Chicken, the Spicy Beef, veggie Chow Mein and White rice. All were delicious. The staff were very nice, very personable- quite different from the other Chinese restaurants around here. I think that alone should be given a bit of credit. How nice for the Chef to come out and say hello to us! Such a personal touch. Thank you. As far as improvements? Well, I do think the Orange chicken, while flavorful, could have had a bit more Orange Zest. And, I love my broccoli and I love when my chow mein has broccoli and this place... not so much. Ehhh. I will write more as I have additional experiences with this place. I can tell you that it just opened and they have all new cooking equipment in the kitchen. A row of shiny new woks to cook with. The front of the house is completely remodeled. I work in commercial kitchens every day as a foodservice equipment repair and installation specialist. I installed all of the new equipment in this place. I can tell you after working with the new owners, they are committed to having the cleanest, and most organized kitchen they possibly can. They spent weeks before opening to make sure everything was spic and span before opening their doors. Typically, these type of establishments are not the cleanest places to eat at. This place is an exception. will be back. My travels take me far and wide and I *love* a good dining experience! read more

New Chef and reopened restaurant have resulted in a flavorful combination. Vegetables real, potstickers home-made; we had a very nice salmon dish that was surprising and tender. Basic boring Chinese food. We went for lunch and chose items from the lunch menu. I got Mongolian beef and my daughter ordered orange chicken. All lunch specials come with hot and sour or egg drop soup, chow mein and fried or steamed rice. All lunch menu items ranged from $7.95 - 9.00. Flavorless chow mein. Fried Rice was dry and boring. They brought my daughters meal first. A good 7 minutes later they brought mine. What is with that!!? Awkward. It may have been microwaved due to the fact the rice was lukewarm and everything else was hot. Lunch total was 22$ for both of us including non alc drinks (hot tea) Oh yeah, it's a family business but come on...an 8 year old girl was brining out food and refilling drinks?!! The Singapore street noodles, shrimp chow fun, fried calamari, and steamed fish filet with ginger sauce are some of the dishes that I'd recommend trying. The hosts are friendly as well. Pot stickers were the worst I've ever had, garlic shrimp had 7 shrimp and tasted awful, tempura vegetables were very chewy and the veggies undercooked, sesame chicken had good flavor but was so over cooked it was hard to chew. The first time I ate here was a few years ago. I remember not being happy with the food, so I didn't attempt to try it again until recently. About 3 month ago we tried it again. It was okay. Maybe a 3 out of 5. We tried it again today. We didnt have many choices with covid going on. Well, it will be my last time ever. We ordered 5 items, spent $63. $58+$5 tip, take-out. Ordered combo fried rice... it was white, barely any seasoning, nearly white rice with a few peas, 1 shrimp and some sweet taste. Gross. Ordered tempura shrimp appetizer... they must have fried it for 30 seconds. The batter was wet, no color, gross, not cooked enough at all. Couldn't even eat it. I also ordered honey walnut prawns. I bit into a walnut and nearly broke my tooth on a walnut SHELL!!!!!! I was so mad. I ordered orange chicken, extra spicy. It was bland. Also ordered lemon chicken... it was all batter NO CHICKEN! I couldn't even stomach through it. I literally ate 3 cookies for dinner. So disappointed. I hope Ione Chinese food opens again soon, we miss them so mug! read more
