As soon as we walked into the place, we should have known what kind of establishment this would have been. It was a Saturday afternoon (lunch time) and the place was desolate. It was a convenient choice for lunch, as my daughter was really in the mood for chinese food, however the food was subpar. The good thing was that they still had the option for a lunch menu. She ordered "Char Siu and broccoli" (roast pork and broccoli) over white rice. The roasted pork was so 'fall apart' that it was gross. this type of meat is supposed to be solid and not flake like a pulled pork type. plus, there were only a few small pieces with an abundance of broccoli that filled the plate up. I ordered general tso's chicken over white rice with broccoli. I received 2 pieces of broccoli with the meal, and a good amount of chicken., however most of the pieces of 'chicken' were just fried pieces of dough. the amount of chicken inside of this was very tiny, barely anything here. I was really impressed with my meal. I ordered Sesame Tofu, and the Tofu was cooked extremely well. It was crispy, and didn't have the typical soft texture of tofu that people avoid. The portions were also large, and I was able to able to substitute the egg roll for a spring roll making my meal vegan. Alright, I've been eating here a lot... I mean A LOT. Why? Because it's a good value, it tastes good(now that I know what to order), they have free wifi, it's close to where I work, and they have the cheapest redbull in the area($2.19 yes the convince stores and bars all charge $3-$4). The first time I tried Golden Dragon I decided never to go back but I was a bit hasty. I ordered the peanut chicken which was dry but it was right at the end of lunch so it had been out for a while. I tried a month later, early into lunch and it was delicious. Next time I came back I got the beef and vegetables and was sorely disappointed with bland chewy beef covered with bland sauce. Fast forward a few hits and misses later... I order 3 things here now and love them. Spicy chicken; it's lightly crispy tossed with spicy seasoning, jalepenos, and scallions. Peanut chicken; just a great flavor, it's their signature dish IMO. Small wonton soup; it's $1.95. Basically it's 4-5 wontons with scallions that they pour a hot flavorful chicken broth over served with a side of fried wonton strips. It normally takes them a couple minutes to make but it's so good on a cold day. If I feel like a little spice I take a tiny spoonful of their chili paste and mix it in. I only get the white rice(unless the lady thinks I said fried rice then I get that because whatever lol) I just don't care for the fried rice or noodles because they're kind of bland. read more

As a NCSU student, this is my GO-TO place for lunch. The price and quality of the food is great. Also to mention, the staff are nice people. The place is usually packed from 12-1 p.m. so be sure to go early if you want to eat in. The portions are HUGE for a meal under $5. My ultimate hot bar dish is the "spicy chicken". I would say that it's the best Chinese restaurant spicy chicken that I've ever had. Just a tip, go exactly at 11:00 a.m. for the first fresh batch, it's totally worth it! I went to the Golden Dragon one day for lunch when I was in Raleigh. There were a few pros and con to this experience however, overall, I thought the experience was just alright. First, the pros: the food being ready and the price. Most of the food is precooked for lunch. The restaurant is kind of set up like Panda Express. This is a nice feature for people who are in a rush for lunch. I believe there are a few other items that you can order that is made up fresh however like I said, most of the food is already cooked. The next pro about the restaurant was the price. Their lunch prices are about $5 for certain meals. This is a great price for lunch! Now onto to the con. There was only one con, the food. Overall, I wasn't really a fan of the food. I was hungry so I ate it but I'm not sure I would have ate it if I wasn't super hungry. Since I wasn't a big fan of the food, I am deducting two stars. I'm not sure if I would come back here again if I came back to Raleigh but it is a good place for people looking for a quick lunch. Dear Mr Dragon Hello there. Today was crazy. We had so much to do and couldn't fix dinner tonight so I remembered you telling me about your restaurant. So I thought I would give it a try. Now I had given up hope for good Chinese food around NC State. It seemed like they all were bad. So I ordered a beef and broccoli, general tsu s chicken, with a side of crab raccoons. We called in the order to I guess you cousin and he was helpful with taking the order and telling us it would be around twenty minutes. By the time I left and parked I was sure it would be ready. Parking is tricky on Hillsborough this time of year but it was evening and there were parking spots available. The restaurant is very simple nothing stood out as special till I opened the food. When we got home the chicken was nice and crisp. No hard parts of chicken to freak me out as I eat it. Just nice soft and crunchy chicken. The beef and broccoli was so fresh and now limp and dying. The pork fried rice had fresh peas and carrot. We received spring rolls worth our food that were made fresh as well. Not the frozen ones from a cooling at food loin. And let me tell you the crab raccoons were by far and I mean far far better than I have ever had. They were full of cheese and crab. I haven't wanted Chinese food for the longest time because I gave up on good food but you my friend have restored my faith. I really cant wait till I can get it again. It was amazing. Okay there just arent any good places to get chinese in raleigh with the exception of this place and im giving this place a five totally based on their Peanut chicken, it doesnt seems like a big deal but it is so flavorful and crunch sometimes leave my home in North Raleigh near Triangle Town Canter just to have it. you have to have it with the White Rice and a mix of the garlic sauce and the sweet and sour for dipping oh man im getting hungry just thinking about it and its not even 11am while im typing this. Good, filling, cheep and slightly sketchy. Nestled between some higher end places on Hillsborough Street The Golden Dragon is pretty much a hole in the wall joint filled with college students looking to get a meal to fit their college ramen noodle budget. Despite being out of college and in the working world I enjoy frequenting these places as well, since a $6 container of peanut chicken fills me up just as well as a $20 steak from a few doors down. Speaking of peanut chicken....Get it. It's crunchy and gooey and full of sinful delight. It's definitely one of those meals you should only enjoy as an occasional treat-- i'm sure the calorie count is something ridiculous. If you can get past the slightly icky and sketchy decor (food on tables, sticky floor at times, questionable drink machine) the food here is really quite solid and with filling meals for less than $10 i'll definately be back! read more

This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurant in Raleigh. It is cheap and convenient as it is so close to campus. Whenever I come here, I usually go for the beef ho fun! The noodles are soft but still have a bite to them, while the egg in the dish makes noodles very fragrant. It smells so good that I couldn't stop myself from eating a few bites before driving home. The only thing that I'm not a big fan of is the beef since they tend to be overly marinated and thus too salty. The restaurant is very flexible and will allow you to customize your dish. I was able to add broccoli to my noodle dish for only a dollar more. Also, I just found out that the restaurant has started serving lu wei (Chinese braised dish). The Crab Rangoon filling was tasty and had a good texture but the outer part was a doughy (and triangular) pocket. I prefer the other (crispier) style that most places have. I ordered the General Tso's Chicken combo. The sauce seemed a bit mild. The chicken was cooked well. Only 2 small pieces of Broccoli. The Pork Fried Rice was decent. I am an NCSU professor - I've been eating at Golden Dragon for close to 10 years. The food is great for what it is - fast Chinese. My go to is Moo Goo Gai Pan and a Spring Roll - Chinese comfort food. The pork dumplings are pretty damn good, too. Everyone there is super nice - I do not think I've had a bad meal here. Hello Golden Dragon! I most definitely do not enjoy coming off as picky or entitled by any means...however this is very much a real (albeit unique) issue. This evening I ordered some house special noodles that contained raw beef. My girlfriend is clinically diagnosed with OCD and was unable to eat it...it was past curfew and we had nothing in the house...she had not eaten since breakfast. Ahh the Ghetto Dragon. This place is really a salvation for college kids who want to eat lunch everyday without having to visit a soup kitchen. Still, I can't believe reviewer Henry S. ordered shrimp from there on a regular basis. I'd rather take my chances base jumping into traffic. When you're in college you can pretty much digest anything. So enjoy it while you can. I usually stuck to the sweet and sour chicken. I'll never forget when my friend Patrick said to me, "I don't think I would know where to find such low quality meat." For some reason that didn't stop us. When poultry is deep fried to the point of breaking into monomeric amino acids and then covered with a nutritious plastic container of overly sweet red syrup I suppose the whole "grade-C dark meat" origins become somewhat irrelevant. read more

Understand this: there is better Chinese food out there. There's better fried rice, there's better sweet n' sour chicken, there's better beef n' broccoli...there's better everything. The upside here is what everyone else will tell you the upside here is: it's cheap. Now I'm not going to tell you that anything here isn't good. Everything here is good. It may all taste strangely similar to the other dishes, even the stuff that's supposed to be a totally different meal, but it's not a bad choice when you're low on money and in a hurry. Even during the busy lunch hour, I don't think I've ever had to wait more than 5-10 minutes to get my superbly adequate meal. The thing is, though, sometimes this place becomes a Taco Bell. You know, you get a craving specifically for Taco Bell. Not real Mexican food. That might be infinitely better, but right now you're thinking Taco bell. Same thing applies to the Dragon. Sometimes I just want the Dragon. I don't want authentic Chinese, or even the best Americanized and deep fried version available...I specifically want something from the Golden Dragon (for previously mentioned reasons, virtually anything will do).
