I'm extremely disappointed with my recent order from Chen Garden. We decided to treat ourselves to dinner, and spent over $50 on two chicken dishes plus appetizers. Unfortunately, we chose Chen Garden. Both chicken dishes consisted of huge chunks of fried batter, NOT chicken. The chicken I found "digging" barely amounted to 2 whole Chicken McNuggets. It honestly felt like "General Chicken" should have been called "General Flour." Times are tough and food prices keep climbing, so it's frustrating to spend that much money and literally be served fried flour. The Black Pepper "Chicken" (being sarcastic....no chicken here) was even worse. No sauce to be found, only a few pieces of raw onion and bell pepper atop fried flour chunks. Awful! I hope the restaurant takes this feedback seriously, because customers deserve better treatment when choosing to spend hard earned cash at their establishment. This was a interesting place. I think one of the worker's son. Or just a boy. He kept running around, and on another note the plalce is not wheelchair friendly. I had to walk, with my bad hips. Love this place because of their food and service. Owned by a local family and when you go there, you feel like family once they know you. You can eat there if you want to. Doesn't feel in The Shanghai dumplings are good and spicy. It's not that super spicy that you can't feel your mouth anymore or taste all the ingredients in the filling. Hot and sour soup: the chicken is tender, tofu soft and silky, has a lot of toppings and the broth is spot on. Since the change of ownership, a couple of new menu has been added: jalapeño chicken and pepper chicken. The chicken is lightly battered and either cooked with slices of jalapeños for the Jalapeño Chicken or with pepper, as in black pepper. I like the former for the heat but not the latter because I don't like too much black pepper. As for the ambiance, the moment you walk in, you are greeted warmly by the owner. My husband and I were in a different area of Holly Springs on Labor Day and were looking for somewhere different to eat. Found Chen's Garden and decided to give it a try. We were glad we did, too! The inside is small, but you can tell it's local and family-run, which attracted us. My moo-goo-gai-pan was fresh with large, tender slices of chicken and a good amount of mushrooms and other veggies. Nice wooded chopsticks were available, which I found of higher quality than most places. We liked the crispy veggie egg rolls we ordered too. I forget what my husband got for his meal, but the quantity was very generous and he got to enjoy many left-overs at home for the next day or two. We ordered Gen Tso's lunch combo and it was crunchy and sauce was good! The pork fried rice that came with the combo was on point. Shrimp egg foo young was good albeit the shrimp might be on the salty side for some people. We enjoyed the chunky Hot & sour soup, too. We might try other entrees the next time we visit. read more

Took out the Bean Curd with vegetables for lunch. The portion size was generous and the brown sauce tastier than most with lots of fresh vegetables and good amount of tofu. The one suggestion i would make is to cook the vegetables until they are a little more tender. These were more on the raw side. Too crispy for my taste. I am posting this on behalf of a friend who lacks access. She purchased a chicken and garlic sauce last night and felt that the chicken was inedible. She took a couple of bites of the chicken and declared it "gross". She would like the restaurant to try to upgrade the quality of chicken that they use. She is from NY and is accustomed to solid, tasty Chinese take-out. She would like Chen's Garden to succeed; to be able to consider it an option when deciding what to have for dinner. At the moment, it's only PF Chang's and Pei-Wei that can be considered decent Chinese in the NC, but hopes the mom and pop Chinese take out can also be option. A huge helping of fried rice and lo mein. Plus I got an egg roll. Dinner and lunch the next day for $7! Place is set up for take out but there are a couple tables if you do want to sit down. I eat here a few times a month, and it's consistently good food for a very low price! The place is a hole in the wall, but I always get take out so I'm not all that concerned about how it looks. The sauces are all made from scratch, and the food is always piping hot. I absolutely love the General Tso's Chicken, it has this sweet and smoky flavor that I have never experienced anywhere else! Chen's Garden finally reopened the last week of August after an extended 5+months closure. During that time, I sampled the other two Chinese restaurants in Holly Springs, trying to satisfy my desire for good Chinese food. Not finding it elsewhere, I was very happy to return to Chen's Garden where they make excellent Shrimp in Garlic Sauce and great pork fried rice. Indeed, that is still as great as I remember and much better that what I got at the other Chinese restaurants in town. Don't come here for a sit down meal. This is a take out mom and pop place. My son loves their Sesame Chicken but I prefer vegetables with my meal. And Shrimp in Garlic Sauce has a wonderful variety of veggies in it. read more
