Really happy when Chinese came to town. First time the Pork Lo Mein, the pork was really fatty and or gristly. This is a local place for me and usually it's pretty good. But recently they have slipped. The food is not as good. I normally get one of their combo platters. It's always good, solid food for the price. I can normally get 3 meals or more out of it. I have tried the Shrimp with Lobster Sauce. It started out OK and last night ended up being horrible. The broth or gravy was thin and bland. It barely tasted like there was vegetable broth in it. Very little ground up pork and peas. Surprisingly there were a good number of shrimp. Not surprisingly they were tasteless and bland. I hope this place steps up their game. Durham doesn't have a lot to offer for food. read more

I tried this about 5 years ago and wasn't a fan. Tried again today and I still don't like it. The general Tso's chicken was very dry and chewy and the rice was not good at all. Very different from any other Chinese food I've had. My kids threw it all away. I'm sorry but I wouldn't go here again. read more

I was really surprised with how exceptional Golden House's food is. I highly recommend the steamed dumplings, they tasted fresh and seem to be hand rolled at the restaurant. Also highly recommend the crab Rangoon a - so much better than what you would typically get at a Chinese takeout restaurant. Overall, wonderful experience!! read more

It's no China City!! Tried this new place out hoping to help support local Durham restaurants but it was mediocre and would rather drive the few extra minutes to Middletown. Probably the best Chinese takeout I've had in CT. The vegetables are always fresh and the meat is high quality. And they also give a ton of food too!?! American-Chinese in downtown Durham is Place was busy and only open a week on my first visit. Tried chicken and broccoli and sweet and sour chicken lunch specials, and both were good. No brown rice available, and steamed dumplings were good. Have been back a few times and it's been consistent. read more

In my opinion, Golden house is one of the better Chinese places in the area. The staff is very friendly and the food is always fresh and quickly prepared. Their dishes are well seasoned, I find a lot of Chinese restaurants just add salt, whereas golden house takes time to add actual flavor with spices. If you're in the area give it a try! read more

Best Chinese takeout in the area! I don't live in Durham anymore, but whenever I visit my parents who live in the area, I stop by. The lo mein, chow fun, and genera tsos are my favorite things on the menu. The owners are so kind and welcoming, it really is a nice family owned business. read more

Food is fresh, servings are generous, and the price is great. I've gotten take out twice from here (it's not an eat in place unless you are OK with sparse decor and a 'factory feel') and the quality had been good. Parking is a little less than desirable as you must back out into traffic. read more

If I could give this zero stars I would. We ordered Mongolian beef and chicken and broccoli. The Mongolian beef had about a pound of onions in it, snow peas and uncooked carrots. The chicken and broccoli had hardly any sauce and the broccoli was crunchy (basically still raw), just like the carrots in the Mongolian beef. I guess when you see the employees eating Subway and not their own food, it's a sure sign to go elsewhere. Additionally, the garbage was flowing out of the trash bin and there was trash on the floor surrounding it. If it's like this now, when the restaurant is new, I can only imagine how it will be in 6 months, if they even make it that long. read more

We are very happy with Golden House! Main reason: the ingredients are fresh and not over cooked. I was surprised to read another review comment on how salty the food is. My other reason for liking their food is that it's NOT as salty as most Chinese food. People joke about the meat in Chinese food being unidentifiable. Golden House uses large chunks of pork, chicken and beef, leaving nothing to the imagination. We've had Garlic Chicken, Chop Suey, Won Ton Soup and Pork Yat Gaw Mein Soup. All dishes have been very good. You can taste the veggies and meat. Seems healthy. We've been half a dozen times at least and will continue to order from here. read more

Wish I could say it's good, but it just isn't. First the rice, it's dark brown. I've never seen fried rice this dark before and very flavorless. The general tso chicken - yuck! It tasted more like vinegar than chicken and I don't think vinegar is in this dish. Tried giving this place a few shots ordering different items, but, will have to find somewhere else to go for eggrolls. It's also freezing in there when waiting for your order. Were pretty picky about our Chinese food, and we like this place. We got the eggroll, beef and snow peas, veg lo mein, curry chicken and teriaki sticks. Love the teriaki, but not enough meat on them. Its more of a kebab. The beef and snow peas and curry chicken were moist and tasty. The "pork" fried rice is a disappointment. It was virtually void of anything other than a dark yellow rice. No egg, no celery, (i had one small square of onion in my serving) and one small piece of pork. It would be a big deal if they would improve upon it. My husband requested it, but it hasnt changed. The boneless spareribs were tasty, but some were fatty. I hope they improve so i can give them 5 stars. We will be back, and will try the pfr once more. read more

Had beef teriyaki, was very tough, looked more like a shish kebab, chicken and garlic combo, found 2 pieces of pork in the pork fried rice, no water chestnuts in the dish, carrots very hard, egg roll that came with the dish was also lacking, good outer crust, very little filling. Pre-ordered with a time, they had a very difficult time understanding that I wanted the order ready at 5:20, I arrived at 5:20, the egg roll and teriyaki were close to being cold and the meal was just warm. Large dish portion but more than half was fed to the garbage pail! Returning? I don!t think so! read more
