I was apprehensive ordering from here because my go-to Asian places are usually those which serve Sichuan cuisine. But it was a a rainy day and I really wanted some hot soup nearby. Along came golden house. We opted for the hot and sour soup, egg drop soup, and the veggie fried rice. The soup also came with packets of crunchy noodles to top it with (a nice touch!). The hot and sour soup was the tastiest of the lot. It had tofu, wood ear mushrooms, and other veggies. It wasn't really that sour, so I added vinegar to it. After that, it was perfect! The egg drop soup was true to its name, lots of egg, very comforting. With both soups though, it was quite thick and a little salty so we had to dilute them a bit, but that's easy enough. The veggie fried rice was...unexpected. The rice was yellow and also had large chunks of broccoli! It tasted fine but didn't feel like fried rice. Honestly this would have been a 2 star lunch except for the context of easy ordering online, fast pickup, good price and portion. But the food itself... meh. The fried rice isn't fried, the ribs are kind of overly sweet rib nibs, the brocc was steamed without any additional flavor, and the chicken was drenched in sweet sticky sauce. I may go back and try a different dish, but not in a rush. If you knew #7 Chinese, which recently closed, this is not anything like that... nowhere near as good. read more

I want to start out that this review doesn't make me happy to write. I do love supporting local businesses but my last order will be my last order. There are also no pictures. The short of this story is I feel bad leaving a bad review, but I'm torn because I thought this place serves good food and for years, it's been a favorite. So I ordered online Christmas Day evening. I ordered an app combo with a friend: Chicken fingers Boneless spare ribs Beef teriyaki Spring rolls White rice NOTHING was good. Chicken fingers were spongy and the delivery was quick...why weren't they crispy? Spare ribs looked and smelled like they were burnt from reheating way too many times. I'm not even kidding. Beef teriyaki looked like it had been run over by a steam roller only after being scorched to a crisp. Also not kidding. The spring rolls were decent. Not good. But decent. The white rice is really yellow rice and this should be described in the menu. There are like 2-3 other reviews here within a few years span that received this kind of food. I really used to like this place. It is cash only but after this last order, I can't waste my money here again. I do understand it was a holiday, but receiving food quickly and getting it this bad takes the cake. A good example of don't judge a book by its cover. It looks like a hole in the wall that might yield less-than-fresh food in warming trays, which used to be cash-only/no online orders. But surprise: this place is pretty solid top to bottom. For a start, they now have a website that takes credit cards and pre-orders, so that's a star in itself. The staff there were genuinely nice, and our food was freshly made and piping hot. And as Americanized Chinese food goes, everything we ate was solid, not a real dud in the bunch, and the portions were generous. I was especially happy with the fried chicken wings (unlike the usual unbreaded, this one had a super crunchy, satisfying batter, and the fat was rendered perfectly), the boneless spareribs (sweeter and more flavorful than others, although you'll get a variety of small pieces here instead of the more uniform longish strips), and the Sesame Chicken (the sauce was just right, the chicken was fried perfectly, it came with some fresh-looking broccoli pieces for balance). The veggie fried rice had a good amount of chunky veggies throughout like pea pods and carrots and broccoli (although weirdly, cabbage pieces too?), and as the other reviews note, their rice is actually yellow like Spanish rice- which worked just fine for me. I thought the chicken fingers and fried shrimp were fresh and fried well but were heavy on the standard pillowy batter as compared to other places (I personally like a bit less batter), and their duck sauce is a bit paler orange and a bit milder compared to others' as well. And their crab rangoons were standard: nothing to write home about, but nothing wrong with them. Yum! I am not a Chinese food eater, but this is the only Chinese food my mother orders take out from. They have the hot pepper oil sauce that comes with the chicken wings. They are so bomb! The fried green plantains are also really good and taste great with that pepper oil. The shrimp fried rice is another item we always get when ordering from here. Golden House is worth a 1 star rating, plain and simple. I was fooled into going to Golden House because it had a 4 star Yelp rating, and after having eaten there, realized my mistake. Let me explain: 1. The food is mediocre, at best. I mistakenly thought "over 25 reviews, and a 4 star Yelp rating... it has to be at least decent!" I was wrong. So wrong. Do me a favor. Find me a Chinese person who has rated this restaurant in the Yelp reviews. Still looking? You guessed it - not a single Chinese person has given this Chinese restaurant a rating. And let's be perfectly clear here: this isn't to say that an Italian or a Haitian can't know good Chinese food. But if I want to know where the best Dominican food is in Boston, I'm not going to go ask someone in Chinatown. Same logic applies here. You're trusting the opinions of reviewers who think that General Tso's chicken is a real Chinese dish (sorry to burst your bubble: it's not). 2. Restaurants are in business to make money. Which means some are willing to lie to you in order to get you in the door. Last night was New Year's Eve, and was a busy night. I placed a phone order and was told that the food would be ready in 30 minutes. I arrived 30 minutes later and waited another 60 minutes before my food was done. I wasn't the only one pissed off. There were plenty of customers who had been just sitting there for an hour (!) because their food wasn't ready. Do you know what the best part was? The girl who was taking orders on the phone while I was there still kept telling people "your food will be ready in 30 minutes" when they were taking 90 minutes. They knew that if they told the customer the truth, they would go elsewhere. Once you had already ordered and arrived at the store to pick up food, you were stuck because it would take longer to find another place. So let me ask you this question: if Golden House is this willing to lie to you about wait time in order to get your business, what else do they lie to you about? SUMMARY: Golden House is bullshit Americanized food that is most definitely not real Chinese. The food is cooked from frozen (because it is cheaper) and tastes good because of the massive amount of salt and MSG they add to it. My family had a big order of a pupu platter for 2, shrimp mai fun, orange chicken, shrimp fried rice, shrimp and snow peas, scallion pancakes, and we got a free Sesame seed chicken. This star is well-earned simply for the kind phone service, super cheap lunch specials, speedy pick-up time and courteous service. The food, however, was not even close to being on par with our usual local Chinese take out place, Hong Kong 888. Golden House's "fried rice" looked and tasted much more like Spanish yellow rice, so at least it wasn't very greasy, but that's all I can say about it. The boneless ribs were almost black in color and dried out, leading me to wonder how many times they might have been reheated. Sadly, had trouble chewing the beef. Excellent Chinese food - standard menu, but everything I've had has been prepared well, fresh and not too greasy. Fried Rice is usually a good barometer for a Chinese restaurant - dark brown/greasy = bad. Light brown + fluffy = good. Golden House's fried rice is the latter. This is standard Chinese food, nothing exceptional - but it's done really well. MUCH better than anything else I've had in the area. Huge portions and unbeatable food for a great price. While they were closed for several weeks due to the pandemic, my husband and I tried a couple of other Chinese restaurants in the area. They could not even begin to compare to Golden House. We were so thrilled when Golden House reopened, and have gone three times in three weeks. Tried Golden House for the first time last night after passing over it several times because they don't deliver and are cash only. Very glad I made the effort to grab some food there, as it was the best Chinese I have had in awhile. The food is fresh and very flavorful and the portions are large enough so you can have leftovers the next day if you like. It's also very affordable and the food itself actually has an air of healthiness to it (at least for Chinese), as our wasn't dripping in grease, overly fatty or mostly filler. Decent Asian food for lunch has been harder to come by in the West Roxbury area lately. My favorite Thai place closed and a couple of other places don't open for lunch (Thai Spice & 7 Star). So, we thought we would give Golden House a shot and we are glad we did. We ordered a few lunch specials at work and everyone was very pleased. This little take out place is very clean and efficient. Cash only no delivery (low overhead). The food was very good, fresh, plentiful, and very reasonably priced. I had kung pao chicken and it was some of the better kung pao I have had in a while. The fried rice has veggies too and is not soaked in soy sauce. What is also neat is that you can get a 1/2 froed checken and fries, or buffalo wings with fried banannas too. I was having such a craving for Chinese food, but didn't want to drive to my favorite spot (Chinatown) in Stoughton. This place got pretty decent reviews, so I decided to give it a try. I ordered a combination plate with chicken fried rice. The chicken in the rice had a slimy texture, so I didn't eat the rice at all. The fried chicken wings were acturally pretty good. The crab ragoon had very little filing, but were edible. The resturant seemed cleaned, but the person who took the money, also answered the phone and cooked (without gloves). Kinda unsanitary. I was going to give it one star, but decided on two stars because of the chicken wings. I really think its a 2 1/2, but I don't know how to get a half star. read more
