I stumble across this place by accident looking for lunch one day. I haven't been in this area in a while so I had no idea there was a Caribbean restaurant down here. The place is small but they have a few tables and a bar style set up along the window. I would guess that most people order take out since they don't have much space inside. The food was ok. I would have liked a little more flavor and seasoning in rice and cabbage. Sadly it reminded me of what Cool Runnings has become and not what it use to be. I'm use to Caribbean food that has that coconut flavor and not so bland but it seems like these places are becoming commercial and losing the essence of what their food is all about. I was in New York last weekend and my friend mentioned Golden Krust and I remembered that there was one on Kirby so I stopped by today and got the brown stew chicken, rice and peas, cabbage...I couldn't even smell the food which should have been my first warning. I was given 3 wings with some gravy, wings, not cut up chicken. The rice and peas were bland and there were green beans in the cabbage. This isn't authentic Caribbean food. I mean if you are hungry, its sustenance but if you know what the food is supposed to taste and smell like, this is not the place for you. I gave my plate to a dude with a sign at the corner. I came here to pick-up some food for lunch today and there wasn't a line at all. They have the food already prepped and in a cafeteria style setting. They have opening lunch specials and specials - so be sure to take advantage! Buy 1, get 1 for $0.99 for patties! $5.95 for lunch specials!!! They have the special size, the small size and the large size. It comes with a meat/curry of your choice over rice and plantains/veggies. I opted for a mild beef patty (they have spicy as well), a chicken curry over plain rice and a side of the mac and cheese. The chicken curry was tender and delicious - with a hint of spice. Definitely filling and flavorful. The beef patty wasn't my favorite but it was extra crispy, which made them stand out from the rest. I just didn't enjoy the filling as much as I do from other places. Overall, it's a good place to pick up food - not too many places to dine-in because seating is limited. Ordered from here for event at work . We received the food in a timely manner and it was fresh and hot . We ordered a half pan of jerk chicken . It consisted of thighs and legs . The food was cooked very well and had just enough seasoning . It was not spicy and perfect for a large crowd with all different taste pallets . If you want something spicy this might not be the place for you . You may have to ask for extra jerk seasoning . Overall I would buy here again . The customer was great . read more

Felicia is so nice! She gave us samples of the chicken curry and goat curry, and the unique flavored drinks. The pineapple ginger fruit drink is most excellent. We got two of those with our curry meals. The goat curry was very tender, the chicken curry has a mild heat to it that sits very well. The spinach rice also has diced carrots, peas, corn, and some spices. Everything was delicious. Watch out for the bones. Food was so good we got an extra plate of oxtails to go for our friend. It was okay. Probably liked cool runnings and reggae hut more. They have a nice lunch meal deal for Mon to Friday on certain dishes like curry chicken. The curry chicken was good, but I preferred my oxtail. So tender and the flavor was great! The curry tasted a little too herby. When we went for dinner on a Thursday night, they only had 3 main meals left though: oxtail, curry chicken, and chicken stew. They let you taste dishes if you don't know what to get. They also give an ample amount of rice (spinach or beans), and Mac and cheese, and get a few plantains. There isn't much space to sit though, mainly a take out place. read more

I tried the fried chicken, with sides of sweet plantain, vegetable rice and cabbage salad, and it was delicious! I have never in my life wrote a yelp review, but this order was so disappointing I feel like it's my duty. The beef patties were not bad but everything else tasted like it was cooked a week ago so I wouldn't be surprised if they simply just popped them in the oven. The jerk chicken I ordered was by far the driest I have EVER had. The plantains tasted like they had been microwaved and weren't even fried. Place is fairly inexpensive. While Golden Krust is a chain restaurant, there is no consistency among stores. The Westheimer location has better options. Lunch prices are pretty reasonable. For whatever reason, stew chicken is listed on their menu as BBQ, although the two are very different. Many of the listed menu options are not available. If you're looking for more authentic Caribbean food, I'd recommend trying Cool Runnings. Good quality and options are better at the Westhemier location as previously mentioned. You can't go wrong with the patties from either location, it's probably the only consistent item on the menu. read more

Ive been wanting to try this place since i watched a story about it on tv. It was just ok. The packaging was definitely a turnoff.I ordered the stewed chicken and cabbage.i dont know what i was expecting but it tasted like bbq crock pot chicken. The cabbage was tasty and so were the rice and beans. Then i took a bite and im like this chicken does have a different flavor but it was actually a plantain...they were yummy but because the plate was so messy you really couldnt tell it from the chicken.The star was definitely the cheese pattie seasoned nicely and flaky flavorful crust. read more

This is pro the worst place you could place an order from. The food my possibly be good ( not my opinion). They have you standing and wait with no estimate on your order . Very rude employees. Bad customer service. Was my first and definitely last time making it there. Jerk sauce was bbq sauce. Chicken was decent but missing that true jerk flavor. Chicken gets one star, it was slightly above par but nothing to write home about. Beef Patty: awarding second star for this one but I feel like this tasted like the ones Fiesta sells around the corner. Jerk chicken patty: no jerk whatsoever. It was a roasted chicken with some jerk chicken seasoning on the skin, but not much at all. The plantains were okay, too greasy. I probably wouldn't return. The woman who checked me out was nice. And the girl serving the food was a dam disgrace: she made a sandwich of the patties and bread and had PATTY CRUST smeared across her face and hands!!!!!! WHAT???????!!!!! Tasted commercial, it didn't taste like authentic Jamaican food. I got the jerk chicken with rice and peas, the rice was over cooked, the chicken had a nice flavor but no wow factor. Being from New York I was excited Golden Krust made its way to Houston. But I also knew that it would have to live up to the name. First off I didn't like that beef patty. The cheesy beef patty tasted like they used cheap cheese. The patty was too thin to my liking. It just didn't taste like I'm use to. I picked up the oxtails and curry goat. Both were okay i guess? The Goat was salty and the oxtails were full of bones. The staff was nice but I could tell they didn't know the menu very well. Especially when I asked her what was in the spinach patty. I really wanted to like your food GOLDEN CRUST but for me everything was to sweet, the rice and peas was sweet, the spinach rice was sweet, the cabbage was sweet and no flavor, PLEASE STOP PUTTING SUGAR IN EVERYTHING, PLEASE!!!!!!! The Jerk Chicken didn't do it for me, I guess because they didn't have white me they only serve dark meat and I really don't eat dark meat but I wanted to try it so I did and I just didn't care for it!!!!!! Next, the oxtails, yes u got a large side of oxtails, they where not tender and to much fat, you are suppose to trim the fat from the oxtails, also pressure cookers work wonders, 1.5 hours and your oxtails will be falling off the bone. I got a mild beef patty and it was so good. I wish I had left all the stuff and just got me 2 mild beef patties and called it a day. After spending $53.28 I can honestly say it was not worth it at all. I hope that whomever the franchise owner is will make some changes so that this location can live up to its name because the area is a great area for a restaurant as such but for now I won't be returning. read more
