My opinion still hasn't changed. You really can't get a cheaper meal in Bowie for a sit down restaurant. Since the renovations, it is nicely decorated. There really is only two places in this city in which the restaurants existed from the beginning. Rips and this one. They are both still around because they offer a good value. Since it changed from strictly Chinese to an Asian bristo, I think that they excelled in Chinese. So stick to it. They are fast and the meals are tasty. The chicken dishes are larger in size and very tender breast meat is used. I'll keep coming back, and so should you. read more

Few might suggest so, but Golden Pavilion is a Bowie institution, as much as Grace's Fortune or Cetrone's were. It has been here since I was a kid, and probably long before I moved here. I got my go-to chinese meal: sesame chicken with fried rice, egg rolls and wonton soup. The egg rolls are good. They're not the best I've ever had, but you can count on them to be what you need when you have a hankering for egg rolls. Bad egg rolls are a deal breaker, and so far our deal is intact. The won-ton soup was the same. The fried noodles are the same. Permit me a distraction because if I've found anything its that sometimes I'll order $20 worth of chinese food just to get the fried noodles. I like East Delight on the other side of town, but their fried noodles seem store-bought and do not fill the fried noodle-sized hole in my heart. Grace's fried noodles were my standard-bearer, and East Delight falls short. Golden Pavilion stays true, but of course cannot quite live up to Grace's. The negatives start with the sesame chicken. East Delight does do this better than Golden Pavilion. You want bite-sized chicken dipped in batter and fried to crispy, coated in a sweet-spicy sauce. The chicken here is bigger than bite-sized, forcing you to half them with a fork. And there is NO crispiness. These are major problems for this dish. I can't even comment on the sauce because if the pieces are too big and not crispy, no sauce can save it. I ask for fried rice instead of the white that comes with it, and typically it is an upcharge. I hope I didn't pay one, because the container it came in was the size of a Rubik's Cube. Its not enough rice for an entree. The fried rice was otherwise fine. Finally, another reviewer said that this isn't the type of place to bring a date, and I respectfully disagree. East Delight has fluorescent lighting and bench tables, so don't take a date there; grab take-out there before you Netflix and Chill. But Golden Pavilion has much better lighting, a full bar, and the girl who cashed me out was a cutie. If you would take a date to a restaurant in a strip mall, this one is as good as any. I guess technically Grace's was in a strip mall - depending on your definition of "strip" - and I took a few dates there. No, this isn't Grace's, but on a Tuesday night if you and a long-term partner want to go out for Chinese, I'd go here before I'd trek to Annapolis or Columbia for over-priced food at P.F. Chang's. Just don't get the sesame chicken! read more

Real Chinese food in the burbs. Some say they can be inconsistent and I don't doubt it, but every time I've ordered from here I get a solid meal. It's more of an American Chinese spot but compared to the local carry out type joints, Pavilion can't be beat. Stick to the staples, i.e., General Tso's, fried rice, Mongolian beef, spring rolls, wonton and you'll be satisfied. Nice family run place as well. Been coming here for years. there is something wrong w/their online menu ordering the wrong item when you add it to the cart and they won't refund your money for their problem. ordering from their online menu is a crapshoot. i ordered a vegetarian dish and got a combination dish, something is messed-up on their menu and they said i could get an "exchange," and wouldn't refund the money. this is the second time it's happened, the first time, i thought it might've been my fault, but this time i made sure, made everybody watch me as i added sezchuan broccoli peppers and carrots, and it got changed into combination w/shrimp and chicken and pork. not ordering online from golden pavilion ever again. why in the world is it so hard for restaurants to get the vegetarian part of their menu right, if it's not one thing, it's another. boooooooo, i was soo hungry, smfh. read more

They have some good days and some not so good days. The sushi is really iffy if I stay while they make it, its usually ok but still missing something. If I order and come back within the time I am told it would take for the order some times I find the sushi to have been poorly wrapped and falling apart and the fish is has gotten warm. For Entrees usually I order the shrimp and broccoli or chicken and broccoli. Again it's a hit or miss so I'm hoping its just a matter of who is the chef that day. Sometimes the shrimp is good sometimes the shrimp and broccoli are mushy and I end up not finishing the meal. The soups are good I get the Won ton soup the most. Had a few other items off the menu (pad thai noodles, fried rice, szechuan beef, spring rolls) that are consistent in taste but could use a little sprucing up. Its a nice location always very neat inside, I enjoy watching the fish tank while I wait for my order. Staff is usually pretty clean and friendly Its convenient for me so I will continue to go for the entrees but I get my sushi rolls elsewhere read more

We ordered delivery. We've ordered from here several times before but never reviewed. We've never had an issue or been disappointed. Delivery time is decent, especially for a weekend. Food has always been hot and nothing's ever been missing. We got the chicken lo mein, shrimp lo mein, orange chicken, and Kung Po shrimp. The lo mein noodles don't leave that greasy after taste that you find at some carry outs. Plenty of meat in all the dishes and cooked well. I think we all agree the best dish is the orange chicken. Huge chunks of perfectly cooked white chicken meat. It's been that way every time we ordered. There's not a lot of sauce with it if that's what you like but certainly enough to add to rice. Also, we got a wonton soup as part of the combo. Really good considering its a freebie but I'd even order it on own its own. read more

Friends and I just had dinner from here tonight and it was pretty decent. Better than your "typical" strip mall Chinese food but still not yet in competition with East Moon Asian Bistro in Bowie, which is far better. Friend had twice cooked pork which was described as fine but seriously lacking any heat or kick at all. But veggies were fresh and crispy which is a good thing, of course. Other friend had Kung Pao chicken and he liked his a lot. Said it was superior to the run of the mill he's used to. Finally, other friend got General Tso's chicken and he liked that it was all white meat but also complained that it lacked any heat at all. I went with the Hot and Sour soup (true test of a Chinese restaurant in my humble opinion) and it was pretty darn good. Now THIS was spicy and had a nice kick. Won't kill you but definitely a much better spicing job than on the other food. Also had sashimi over rice (Chirashi) and it was OK. Nothing bad, just not terrific. Some pieces were really rubbery. Not sure if I would do it here again. Major turn off was the salad that accompanied the Chirashi entree. Wilted, browning lettuce and dressing that was literally swimming with clots of something. As others have mentioned, the servings are huge and it is not overly expensive for what you get. And the service was very friendly although we did do take-out. I will likely go back here for their Chinese food but not the Japanese. Also, going to request that they make things more spicy in the future because bland Chinese food just plain sucks. read more

We were getting delivery from Hunan Garden but when they changed management they were always messing up our orders so we gave up on them. Disgusting! Food arrived cold..all except for the sushi which was warm/room temp! Chicken teriyaki: very small portion of dry, over cooked chicken with little sauce. Two small piece of broccoli smothered with soggy onions and peppers Pad Thai: okay. Sweet, red sauce..not "Thai Style" but this seems to be the norm around here Sushi: arrived warm, tasted very fishy, old tuna and tuna roll. This has made my husband.very nauseated. Golden Pavilion is "the standard" in Chinese food for our brood. Good food, ample portions, great service and very family friendly. With multiple kids of all ages, the latter is vital to us. She acted like she had something better to do and the place was damned near empty. Either way, I ordered my food and was not very please with it. Probably the best local Chinese food. I agree with a previous review, stick with the Chinese food. I don't recommend the sushi. I had the crispy beef and salt and pepper shrimp. Both great flavor, but not spicy enough for me. Salt and pepper shrimp is generally spicy so I asked them to make it spicy. I tasted no spice. The crispy beef was listed as spicy but for me I tasted nothing to mild spice. Had to add sarachi sauce to kick it up. But the flavors were great! It's close, cheap and they deliver. Not clear to me why the negative reviews. Dinner last night had hot and sour soup that was hot ( thermally and taste) and sour. Fried rice not laced with canned peas and carrots so often found in other less authentic places, crisp, not soggy, bok choy, a crispy, well filled and tasty egg roll. This is a plain neighborhood restaurant with an attentive friendly staff, very enjoyable food, and very reasonable prices. Have been here several times with the same experience. Only reason for four stars is that I reserve that for WAY beyond expectations, not for just doing their job right. read more

I ordered take out from here and what started out as a refreshing change from our normal Asian restaurant choices in the area quickly turned into a horrible disappointment. The prices are a bit on the high side, so I expected some pretty amazing food. The offerings on the menu are a nice mix of Chinese & Japanese entrees, complete with sushi and some interesting Chef Specials. I ordered the Chicken Tempura entree, yellow tail sushi, Salmon entree, and veggie egg rolls. To start, the egg rolls were some of the best I've had in the DC area so far. Win! At this point I'm doing a happy dance because my boyfriend told me I would regret not ordering from our regular place. Next... ...Well unfortunately here is where the meal took such an incredible wrong turn that it was unable to recover. This sushi was the nastiest, most horrible sushi I have ever put in my mouth. Unfortunately, we ordered a lot of it. I thought I was imagining things after my first roll. My boyfriend was dead silent, so I tried another roll, and this time I almost threw up. The fish was so old and yucky in taste, I was shocked I didn't realize the smell before I put it in my mouth. It honestly tasted as though the fish had been sitting on a shelf outside a refrigerator for a week before they put it in the sushi. I immediately grabbed the whole tray and threw it away, despite the high price we paid for it. I refused to even give it to our dogs, who generally eat what I don't care too. During our mouth cleaning session with many cups of water and beer, my boyfriend says, he was silent due to holding back the vomit. Oy vey...turns out he was right. Thankfully the remainder of the meal was edible, although completely unsatisfying. The black bean salmon lacked flavor and was quite small for the $13.00 (we always share our entrees, and it was a weak portion to split). There just wasn't much to it at all. The chicken tempura probably would have been fantastic, if there had actually been more chicken instead of the mix chicken and vegetable tempura and again was such a small portion it was difficult to split. About an hour later, we ordered pizza. I should never have to do that after a $40.00 meal. Needless to say, we will not return. 2 stars for effort and remembering to add hot mustard to the bag. Had the sunshine roll and the Golden Orchin cocktail while waiting for takeout. We've been here a couple of times and I always wonder why we don't come here more often. Cheaper drinks and food than Grace's Fortune, and just as good. The service leaves a liiiiittle something to be desired, but it's not terrible at all - a woman who I assume is the owner and/or manager is serving us and while she's super quick, she's a little pushy. Barely put the menu down in front of us and asked us to order, then barely handed my husband his drink before asking him when he'd pay (we'd already paid for our first drink and our food, she was just pushing for him to pay for the drink he hadn't even sipped yet). Used to eat here and get take out many years ago, then it closed for renovation for a while and we got used to other places. Just went back for take out- Gen Tso's and Chicken & Broc. They were terrible. I mean I bad. One was bland, the other had an off tasted. Didn't look or taste like the ingredients were cooked together in a wok, but pre-cooked ingredients and generic sauce dumped in a box. read more

While the outside of the restaurant needed some paint, the inside was very nice. The waiter was very nice and attentive and even pointed out that a dish that was order would take longer to cook then the others so he would make sure it was started first. Also, they allowed for individual checks for our birthday party so we didn't have the problem of everyone having only $20s. As for the food, everyone was thought the food was good. I order fried rice and chicken which was OK, but I had assumed there would be some sort of sauce on it to make it less dry.
