I have ordered take out from this restaurant twice. The first time I ordered I got Fried Chicken Wings, Chicken Hunan Style, White Rice, and Lo Mein. Since this location is further away, I reheated the wings in the oven and they were deliciously crispy. The Lo Mein wasn't the exact style I had hoped for and the Hunan Chicken was decent but I could tell the veggies weren't fresh. I enjoyed the meal for the most part and thought I had finally located my carry out spot. The second time I ordered I got one Fried Chicken with Fried rice (pictured) and an extra order of just Fried Chicken, Broccoli with Garlic sauce and a side of white rice. I was disappointed by the presentation of the fried rice, and it didn't taste better than it looked. The broccoli's sauce looked watery and when we tasted it, it was not what we expected. Even after reheating it was not pleasant. I was going to still eat the food, so I dumped out some rice on my plate and BOOM, a black hair in the middle of the rice. The rice was compacted in the box so the rice was either packed into there or cooked in. I was disgusted, and ended up only eating a wing or two. I stopped in on a whim because I was craving some General Tso's Chicken, and I figured, what the heck. I placed my order and was told it would be 10 minutes or so. The young lady that took my order was friendly and she accommodated my request of shrimp fried rice, instead of pork fried rice that comes with my meal. I also received wonton soup and an egg roll. My order was up and I collected my fortune cookies and other condiments to accompany my meal, which were placed outside the ordering window. The soup and egg roll were good, nothing unusual there, but the shrimp fried rice seemed to be a bit on the burnt side. The shrimp also seemed to be cooked on the side and then just thrown in, sort of like an after thought. The chicken itself was rather good and cooked very well. I just couldn't get over the burnt rice taste. Needless to say, I didn't even finish the fried rice portion of my meal. It could've been a bad day or a bad moment for my meal. Yesterday I purchased shrimp and chicken Hunan, small hot and sour soup and order of shrimp spring rolls. The appetizer and soup were good but the Hunan was not good. The chicken was not full cooked, tasted bland and the rice was not cooked. This used to be one of my go to spot in the area but sadly not anymore. Stopped in to pick up pan fried dumplings . The place is literally a little hole in the wall , unassuming , with a couple of chairs and a table for those little packets of soy sauce, hot mustard , and the other stuff . The dumplings were very flavorful and the dough wasn't too thick . They were a little shy on the filling which was a bummer since you only get 6 in the order . I have been using this take away for 20 years or more through various ownership changes. Unfortunately, the service and food quality has significantly dropped off. The lady taking orders on the phone or in person does not speak or understand English very well which causes problems. On one recent incidence I was given someone else's order. A few days ago I ordered the chicken with almonds which they have on their menu. I went there in person to point the dish out to the lady who takes orders as she does not recognize the word almonds over the phone. When I got my food home there were no almonds, the rice was stale and really awful. It is a real shame that a once great take out restaurant has fallen on such hard times. read more

There must be a new cook. I ordered my favorite dishes, Mongolian Beef and Shrimp Egg Fu Young. They tastes NOTHING like the food I have ordered over the years. The Shrimp was larger but the dish lack taste. The Mongolian beef was very bland with loads of onions and bamboo shoots. There are no onions or shoots in that dish so I must have received something else entirely. I am so disappointed. I used to think they had the best Egg Fu Young anywhere in this area. Definitely good for carry out food. They offer more than the online menu shows and the woman running the cash register is too cute and very friendly. We ordered the beef with oyster sauce. It wasn't bad. wasn't stellar. It seems most carryouts have a general brown sauce that just changes names to enhance the menu. This was that generic broccoli & beef/ pepper steak /& now oyster ....sauce. Due to the lack in flavor variation, I wasn't impressed. However, the sauce wasn't overly greasy or rank so I wasn't turned off by it either. We also got the general tso's chicken. I don't know who general tso is or why he's been turned into bite sized hunks but I do know, at least, his foot was in that there!!! It was good. We needed to reheat all the food when we got it home but that held up a la microwave pretty well. All in all, if I'm in the Bowie area & craving late night carry out, we'd go back. I have been ordering carry out from Hunan Gardens since 1999 and they have hands-down the best Chinese food in all of Bowie. Their food is better quality, and they provide better quantity for a lower price, than any of the other fancier "Asian fusion" restaurants in Bowie. We usually order from here once a week, or at least once a month, and their food is always consistent, which is a big plus. Most other restaurants in the area are hit or miss as far as quality and consistency, and who wants to waste money ordering out for crappy food? Hunan Gardens never forgets items you ordered, and everything is always cooked just right. We usually get General Tso's chicken, beef with broccoli, Singapore noodles, shrimp fried rice, shrimp toast, or any of their other dishes and everything is just really great and yummy, the way it should be. We ordered wings and fries as one of our meals. To our surprise we ordered whole wings but each pice of the wing was counted individually. Kind of taken aback by some of the reviews here. We eat here on average, I would say 3 times per month. Never had cold or bad food (usually still very hot when I get it home). Recent ownership change has brought the use of credit/debit cards as a payment option. Owner is frequently taking calls while I am either placing or picking up my order, and I cannot recall a time I have ever heard him rude to anyone on the phone. I was actually excited by the no frills appearance of the place (like a ghetto apartment building entrance) and the matter of fact pick up area; I assumed it was a legit Chinese carry out! The host was extremely nice! It's a given that the majority of your food will be pre-cooked at any Chinese take out but, this place obviously holds that assumption to it's advantage. The food is old! It's seriously old! I understand that not all wonton soup is fresh (as it should be) or homemade but, it should never taste close to rancid! The sweet and sour chicken chicken was over cooked (I saw it being cooked twice)! The pork in the pork fried rice was full of fat and extremely tough! All and all this place is awful! I ordered food and it came in 40 minutes, which was fine. I ordered something super simple, such as, chicken wings w/mumbo sauce and fries. The chicken was cooked really well. The fries were UN-salted, and last but not least, the mumbo sauce was WATERED down. I have never tasted such a tasteless sauce in my life. You can tell that they are diluting the product to produce more. I rather this establishment charge extra than to ruin such a DC staple sauce. Worked a long day and wanted something good to eat so my wife suggested Chinese. So on the way home I googled Chinese food and this place came up. So we stopped off and tried it and boy was it good. We got the special dinners which came with soup, egg roll and a meal at a great price. I got tripple delight and my wife got General Tso's chicken and both had fried rice. She got wonton soup and I hot and sour soup. Then we got teriyaki chicken sticks, steam dumplings and crab rangoon's. Everything was very good but the wonton soup my wife got wasn't that great (was lifeless in taste and flavor). Wasn't the worst she tasted but didn't have that wow factor either. But both the steam dumplings and teriyaki chicken sticks were great with nice size portions as well. The teriyaki chicken sticks were nice and juicy not all dried up. The steamed dumplings the same nice and hot with flavor and were super moist. Now our meals were spot on. The rice (pork fried rice) was very flavorful and moist.
