This is by far the closest Chinese to my house but I don't order here often. Latest experience reminded me why. Ordered take out. Never had been inside before because I've always ordered delivery. It's nice, and I had a beer at the full bar while I waited. I specifically ordered here because they have sautéed green beans, which is a favorite. That was fine. But three other meat dishes were disappointing - where's the meat? You can immediately see where they are cutting costs. The mu shu pork was 90% cabbage and extremely pale egg, with maybe a couple tablespoons of minced pork hiding out. Some of the cabbage was carelessly chopped into like 10 inch strips, which I had to chop with a knife, or large chewy chunks of stem I just tossed out. This kind of lack of attention is unacceptable. Likewise with chicken and beef dishes - mostly just vegetables, and what meat was there seems low quality. Flavors were all fine. Scallion pancake - which I always order, everywhere - was the absolute smallest I've ever seen, but was decent. But they forgot to include the mu shu wraps!!! That's the whole point of the dish! So that's a star lost right there. I will probably order from them again in another year when desperate enough. It's not gross. It's just not very good. read more

I have been going To Golden Shanghái for many years. However, today I went and ordered a few lunch specials and a few extra eggrolls. The food was very poorly prepared, as well as the eggrolls were nearly raw inside the vegetables inside the eggrolls were mushy and you can still taste the dough off of the egg roll "crust." I called and explained my concerns and they completely ignored my concerns and said that their food is prepared the same all the time and I must be mistaken! I told them I had pictures and I could also take the food back and they said it wouldn't matter and that there was nothing they could do for me other than replace one dish that they made completely wrong! I will NEVER go back to Golden Shanghai as they clearly don't value their loyal customers and our complaints when they do happen. However, they are very willing to charge me $65.00 for my lunch and not make amends to the food that was very very poorly prepared! My sister chose this venue for her daughter's birthday party, as well as for a gender reveal celebration for the new one coming. We had reservations made in advance and were given an area of the restaurant to the side where we could have our party. The restaurant in itself is quite lovely and elegant. The Asian theme and decor was tasteful and incomparable. Off the bat, as I walked in the the restaurant, it seemed very aesthetic and polished. Now on to the food...I let my family do the ordering and when it came out, I found the portions to be very large and the dishes to be cooked to perfection. We ordered white rice to go with the meal and had some soup to start off with. The waiter (who kind of seemed like he may be the owner) was extremely attentive and accommodating. He really cared about our satisfaction and enjoyment of our dishes. Our tea and water was checked regularly and refilled as necessary. All in all, we had a wonderful family celebration. We had a great time together and Golden Shanghai was the perfect choice for this party and a place for us to catch up with loved ones. March 2021 pandemic update: Dine-in is open with limited seating. Online ordering is available at UberEats and Grubhub but 3rd party app prices can be inflated. It has a cardboard bottom to keep everything upright and stapled shut with receipt showing items ordered. Like my previous review stated, the food is not da best I've ever had but that's ok. My only criticism of GS is the master of none menu. There's Thai and Vietnamese items which I think it's unnecessary. Shanghai is in China, not Thailand. I absolutely love ordering takeout out or delivery from this spot! Their food is not high in sodium but has great flavor. They are super nice and helpful if you have any questions about the menu. Free delivery if you are within a certain radius and only $6 if outside of that. My personal favorites are their vegetable fried rice, lo mien with beef, orange chicken which is actually spicy and amazing, and my most favorite honey walnut shrimp. Terrible! Wonton Soup: Wontons had NO meat in them and the dough was not cooked (Just a wad of dough floating in broth). Crab Cheese Wontons: Tasted weird. Not sure if it was the stuffing or the oil they cooked it in. I've never had bad Crab Ch. Wontons--don't know how you can mess them up. Egg Foo Young was mediocre at best. I have been to Golden Shanghai a few times and have never been wowed either by the food or the service. This visit was no exception. There is a prominently displayed help wanted sign as you walk in and I'm frankly surprised by how well they were doing in spite of the fact that they had one server and one helper to take care of a full restaurant with a large party in one room. The poor server was running around and actually sweating as she managed to get to all of the 10-12 tables. Our service was slower than normal but we were still able to have lunch and get out in about an hour and a half. The actual strip mall restaurant is older and hasn't been updated in all the years that I've been going there. The women's restroom is very old and not all that clean but they do have bottles of hand sanitizer on each table. I had the lunch special chicken and veggies that comes with soup (pretty bland) and a large, heaping plate of chicken and veggies with an innocuous white sauce, and a very small egg roll. The entrée portion was large - especially for lunch - so the higher price ($11.95) wasn't too remarkable. I go to Golden Shanghai when I have lunch with a 97 year old relative who lives nearby because it's the closest Chinese restaurant to her building. I don't think I'd make a special trip to eat there but it's definitely adequate. read more

We've been coming to this restaurant for near 10 years now, and we've always loved this place. But in the recent few years, their prices raised by a few dollars each dish. That didn't seem like an issue cuz their food is great as usual. But today, when I ordered the crispy duck, there's maybe a few scattered pieces of meat, definitely not a full half like they advertised. When I asked about it, the cook angrily argued that it's a full half and flicked around the duck pieces with his gloveless hand, attempting to "assemble" a duck shape. It's so ridiculous, the cook later showed me the uncooked raw duck, it's literally the size of a small chicken. I don't have big hands and the raw duck, while uncooked, is the size of one of my hand... they raised the food prices and cut prices on the ingredients? It's so stupid to see one of my favorite restaurants turn into this scam. Unfortunately, I didn't take a pic of the dish before it was sent back. But even at checkout, they gave us 3 fortune cookies-- with one of them completely unpackaged and just taken to the table with the waiter's bare hands... what the actual hell have happened to this place. When we got boxes for leftover food, but the boxes are at least a third smaller than before: they charge 25 cents per box so they even try to get money here. And no more "thank you" take out bags, now it's black trash bags. It's so gross. read more

This place is the bomb dot com. I started eating Golden Shanghai by ordering delivery, which was always fantastic. Then I started ordering take out, and have now, a year later, evolved into my fullest and greatest form, dining in. In each circumstance, I have been blown away. First, the food is awesome. They have a vast menu full of items that I've never seen anywhere else in the area. According to my Chinese friend, it's authentic. According to my white brother, it's delicious. I concur with them both. Second, the service is so good it teeters on adorable. As you walk in, there are photographs of the owner, Dana, with special guests hanging among the many awards they have received. Then, once you step foot inside the actual restaurant, low and behold, the woman in all of the photographs is standing right in front of you to greet you with a big welcoming smile. Now if that isn't service, I don't know what is. The servers themselves are also super fantastic, attentive, friendly... and get this, the place is actually clean! I know I'm not alone in being freaked out when you step into a restaurant you've been ordering delivery from and find out that it's unkept and disgust. Not Golden Shanghai! They were quick and efficient. I was really impressed. The food was very good. Flavors, seasoning, everything was on point. The service is always speedy and respectful, despite often times being really busy! During dinner hours, the restaurant can be packed! My family is from Taiwan and we love the authentic Chinese options as well as the Szechuan spicy dishes! The restaurant also serves sushi now and it's delicious with great presentation too. A solid four stars for a quasi-suburban area. I had a Groupon expiring soon, so I made of point of using it up. I was the first customer through the door shortly after 11am on a Thursday. There were a few other tables of people by the time I left; mostly an older crowd. Since I was using the Groupon, I could not order any specials (including Lunch). So, ordering off the dinner menu, I went with a cup of Hot and Sour Soup, Fried Dumplings, and Mongolian Chicken. The Hot and Sour Soup was quite good. Nice flavors, no off notes, visible pieces of meat, and crispy chow mein pieces on the side for added texture. The Fried Dumplings (pot-stickers) were fine. They were just a touch doughy, but had good flavor. The Mongolian Chicken was a bit odd. There was nothing really wrong with it, but the flavor profile reminded me of "Mongolian" meets "Black Pepper sauce" instead of pure Mongolian. It had a generous portion of chicken and all the right veggies. This came with a largish serving of steamed rice that was very nice and fresh. Service was mostly good. One minor compliant would be that I mentioned and showed the Groupon at the beginning of the meal, but the server brought out a full bill later and promptly disappeared.
