Guys, this was just not good. In a scary, dirty sort of way. I had springrolls. They were okay. I also got pad thai that somehow tasted sour, smelled like fish and chicken grease and had tofu that was probably good earlier in the day, but was just soaked in the juice of the smelly stuff. Started a new diet so I was craving some well prepared veggies and shrimp. Called and asked for the shrimp and veggie steamed dish in broth vs plain water. Response: we won't make it that way. Okay. I'll risk it. Also got some eggplant with broccoli in fresh garlic in very little oil. Wife got a small cashew chicken and pork fried rice. Oh and my fav an order of egg drop soup. Result. Soup went down the drain after 3 sips. No flavor. Steamed shrimp were hockey pucks. Almost inedible. Eggplant dish was okay but I think they forgot the garlic as it had very little flavor. But I ate it. Steamed veg had no flavor. At least Golden Chef will steam in broth. Next time ordering from there. Oh and my wife liked the rice but ate only one bite of her cashew chicken. Bland. We won't return. Really a missed opportunity as the portions were great. However giant bland food doesn't work. read more

I'm giving this four stars, but it's more like 3.75. We ordered carry out for 8 people on Christmas night. I called at 4:00 for a 5:30 pick up. No trouble ordering. When my son got there at 5:30, they told him 15-30 minutes. In actuality, it was 35-40. I don't think they'd started our order. Once we finally got dinner, it was very good. No mistakes in the order either. Mongolian beef was very good. Hot and sour soup was a hit. Egg drop soup was decent. Basil fried rice was spicy and good. Crab Rangoon were huge. Salt and pepper calamari was very fried and a little disappointing. Pad See Eiw with chicken was also a popular in our group. All in all, the food was hot, portions were big, and taste was good. We tried Golden Star today for the first time. I ordered a Kung Pao Delight. If you like boiled white onion you will love it. There was nothing from the real Kung Pao... Like 80% of my plate was filled with onions. One tiny shrimp and 4 pieces of beef was ok though. read more

Best of i have found in the area.. i have tried 5 different dishes and all excellent.. shrimp fried rice had big shrimps in it.. Sesame chicken so moist and tasty.. portions size are very generous.. definitely recommend....everything tastes so fresh. read more

I would rate this place like a 3.5. I give it a three because the food is kind of mediocre. Nothing to get excited about. However the portion sizes are great, more than filling. The delivery is super fast. It came within 30-40 mins of me placing my order and it was still nice and hot. The prices are great, especially compared to other in the area. I ordered the Mongolian beef lunch special which I was nervous to do because ordering beef from Chinese restaurants has always been bad for me. Golden star is a nice little carry-out place. I have been there a number of times and think the food is good. Golden Star has two tables as well if you decide to eat there rather than letting your meal get cold on the way home or where ever you are going to eat. The menu is long and has a lot to choose from. Another nice thing Golden Star offers is their lunch specials. The lunch specials consist of one menu item, fried or steamed rice and soup or egg roll. Golden Star is the best Chinese Food around. The food is always hot and fresh and they have a great selection of dishes. Their Pad Thai is very good and If you are looking for a Healthy but very tasty dish the chicken and mixed vegetables is delicious. The owners are very nice and work very hard. The restaurant is very clean and although it is mostly a takeout restaurant, there is a few tables inside if you want to dine in. This particular take-out restaurant is very mediocre. Everything has a bland taste. The vegetable lo mein tastes like cooked noodles and vegetables. The chicken and broccoli didn't have any distinct flavor. The sesame chicken looked like it was prepared with the same sauce used for the sweet & sour chicken; and tasted like it, too. If you are looking for bland, then this is the place for you. If you are looking for that typical Chinese take-out flavor, I strongly recommend finding somewhere else. My fault for ordering the first time through Yelp. I wanted the Mongolian beef lunch special, and I ordered from their regular menu :( The exact same item, same price, but without the 2 side orders... I paid the much higher price and got less. When I called to find out what happened, all the owner did was argue, point blame, and was defensive from the start saying they did nothing wrong (witch they didn't) and didn't offer to fix or make my first experience with them more positive even though they knew I was already a Yelp user. For a Chinese take out place, Golden Star is just okay. We order from here now and then from work and the joke around the office is to always ask for extra flavor. Generally the food is hit or miss. The moo shu is good, but the pancakes are neither homemade nor steamed. The pad Thai is bland. The panang curry isn't really a peanut base; rather, more so a traditional yellow curry. The lunch specials are a pretty good value. Maybe I haven't ordered the right stuff here, but my coworkers' and my consensus is that food is just average. To our dismay, Golden Star changed hands two weeks ago! I'm Hong Kong Chinese and have appreciated their standard American Chinese fare. But we ordered take out from there 3 days ago and everything tasted different and bad. The beef and broccoli was so salty, the sauce was...well soya sauce colored. The beef are measely little pieces. The snow peas in the shrimp dish are limp, and salty, and the shrimp was not fresh. In fact it was so bad, I called up the restaurant and just straight asked them if they are new owners. So I've had several dishes here. In the category of chinese take out it's at the top. I've had chinese take out from many places over many years. Everything here is a cut above. The sauces are tasty, and when it says spicy, they give you spicy, unlike many chinese places. The meats (shrimp, beef, chicken) are of a better quality, tender, lean, and correctly cooked. The veggies are also cooked perfectly, so a meat eater like myself does not mind how much meat is in a dish when I have veggies like this to eat. I've only had one noodle dish (beef chow fun) so far, but these difficult thick noodles were cooked just right. And the fried rice (get the house special) is more refined than the typical chinese take-out. The best dish out of the 10 or so I've had so far is the Szechuan shrimp. This place has been here for many years, but this is new ownership, and it's way better than it used to be. Good food variable service love the crab Rangoon, chicken teriyaki. Chicken chop suey, the orange chicken is on the spicy side. The restaurant is small so it's not good for groups. The human chicken is also good though I think new china (in garetty square) has better fried pot stickers than golden star does read more

I was never a fun of Chinese takeout even though I'm Chinese myself (mainly because the quality of the ingredients is not up to my standard). Well, Golden Star is an exception. For the price, you get very good Chinese takeout. I've tried their basil fried rice, rice noodle, yellow curry, pad thai, house special shrimp. They all taste great! There is a lot of bad Chinese food in Lake County and a handful of average places. I have yet to find a good place so I thought I'd keep looking and I gave golden star a try. It is the worst so far. I ordered delivery and was told to expect 45 min. Almost an hour and a half later the food arrived. General Tso's chicken was the worst I've had. Tough chicken in soggy breading. I requested extra spicy and instead I received no peppers at all. It tastes like they just poured sweat and sour sauce on fried chicken. the pork pot stickers are falling apart and flavorless. Overall Golden Star is a total disappointment on all fronts. I will continue my search for decent Chinese in Lake county. read more

Very speedy service. Every time I've come in, I've never waited more than 10 minutes. I usually call ahead and by the time I get off the phone and get to my car and drive there, its ready. This time there was relatively few pieces of chicken and why wife felt that it didn't taste as good as it had before. Very large portions and we order extra pancakes and sauce. We get about four servings out of it. Service is very fast. When I called, I was told 10 minutes. I got there about 15 minutes later and the food was ready and hot.
