Home cooking and a trip to yesteryear, This was a Sizzler restaurant in the 1960's In the Ridgewood Shopping Center area and close to the closed Ridgewood Theater Step inside and a flood of " I've eaten here before " thoughts emerge. It's a place where everyone knows someone and the vibe is old school. A real comfort food place. The service is outstanding and frequent visits by waitressing staff is great. The menu is loaded with affordable breakfast and lunch offerings. Had the breakfast special and it was delicious. Biscuits and gravy were my choice with crispy bacon. I was told by a reliable source that this place was "old school". Sometimes I am in the mood for throwing away pretenses and getting back to basics, and today was one of those days. This place was a blast from the past! When you walk into the Goldmine you are immediately taken back into the 1970s. Original fixtures, original chairs, and no pretense. The 70's music on the radio was a fun ambiance! The service is down home and friendly. It could also be defined as old school. The menu is old school as well. The prices are extremely reasonable, and yes old school. I ordered a Ham & Cheese omelette, with Home Fries, Biscuits & Gravy, and a Waffle. Absolutely Delicious! When putting this together, I started to think I would give them a 4-star rating but then I asked them realistically what would I downgrade them from a five -star to a four star, and the answer was absolutely nothing. First time in, but I was not disappointed. The prices are good, the food is made fresh and I can tell they have their regular customers. Chatted with the owner, very nice man. I never order biscuits and gravy because I don't like soggy food, but here, they grill them and serve separately. We will be back in! read more

Not my cup of tea. Definitely an establishment for the locals around town who come there as part of their daily routine. It's was damp and kinda cool in there. The smell wasn't very pleasant to me either. But please note that my nose is VERY sensitive to smells. A favorite of mine. Is it the classiest or best tasting restaurant? No. But it is a wonderful comfort food restaurant. It has one of my favorite chicken fried steaks; the classic fried style they do is excellent. They renovated a couple months back and it was a good choice. The atmosphere is nice and pleasantly classic, and the servers are generally very friendly. Not a mind blowing restaurant but if you want simple southern fair, I recommend it. read more

Went there this evening..my wife and I both ordered the chicken fried steak and it absolutely sucked ..it was over cooked so bad that the meat inside the breading was burnt....don't no how they did that..there was only one wait person.slow slow slow...the best part of the meal was the salad.the rest was not edible at all..don't waste ur money at this place it's really bad. read more

Came here after receiving a plate of spoiled meat at Waffle House and my expectations were more than met. Our waitress, who happened to also be the manager, and let me tell you --after being in the industry my entire life and watching the decline of service rapidly this was a breath of fresh air-- she was attentive, prompt, funny, charming, all around amazing and on top of all that THE FOOD WAS FIRE! I got the steak and eggs and was served a proper thick, juicy, perfectly cooked cut of meat and my boyfriend got the fried pork chop. I truly detest pork in all forms (ham, bacon, pork loin, etc) but I ventured out and took a bite and DAMN! this was heaven! I could've been tricked into thinking I was eating a plate of chicken fried chicken had I not known. Infinite bonus stars for our waitress not even questioning our request for apple pie with cheddar cheese like other places do. (if you're confused there's a scene in Taxi Driver where Robert DeNiro orders a slice and I've been on the hunt for years for a place to serve me it, usually met with apprehension/disgust when I try to order it elsewhere) All in all, 10 out of 10, would recommend. People are being obnoxious complaining about the decor and furniture, the restaurant was clean and inviting, the food was outstanding and the prices were low. The price for what I got would have been good back in the 90's, but in this economy, it's fantastic. It's good, fresh food for a great price. I love the diner vibe It seems like a good place for breakfast on a lazy Saturday. The only reason this wasn't a 5 star review is because the service was really slow (we were there half an hour before we even ordered), but that wasn't for lack of trying on their part, they were just a bit understaffed I could tell all the servers were scrambling to provide everyone good service. I would recommend this place to anyone not in a hurry, or if they see that the parking lot isn't full. read more

My boss and I came here after seeing the movie "Elvis" starring Austin Butler which was an AWESOME FILM and received 9 Oscar nominations and did not win one...HOW SAD THE ACADEMY has lost it's touch with reality. We walked in and no one greeted us we stood at the door for 5 minutes. The patrons looked at us as if our skin was too melanated to enter!!!! I'm glad others have had a good experience, but ours was anything but. We came in about 6:00 on a Friday, there were maybe six or seven tables of customers. We sat down, got our menus and drinks relatively quickly, placed our order a few minutes later, then waited for our food. And waited. And waited. 30 minutes later I was starving, our waitress came by zero times. We finally waited long enough, flagged our waitress and told her we didn't want to wait any longer, and left. She told us kind of defensively "We're busy", but if half a dozen tables when we came in is busy... Maybe others are coming in when it's not "busy"? Decided to give it a try based on the positive reviews. Hungry and ready for a late lunch , I ordered chicken fried steak, recommend by the nice waitress. Black eyed peas and okra, salad as sides and a big glass of tea. My son ordered grilled chops, green beans and a baked potato. Chicken fried steak was the size of a cantaloupe with a piece of meat the size of a playing card and saturated in what tasted like week old grease. Okra burnt and peas were flavorless.the salad was tasty and the thousand island dressing was tasty.Tea was off and too sweet to drink. My son's chops were tasty with charred grilled flavor but riddled with bone chips. His green beans were flavorless and inedible. His baked potato was the best part of his meal. This joint best described as an upscale Beef House complete with 60's/70's wood grain decor and a row of casino style "gaming machines"! Our waitress was super nice but for 40 bucks plus tip for a baked potato and a salad is really all we could salvage , it gets two thumbs down and I cannot recommend Gold Mine. Last minute quick breakfast with a friend in the area and she said - wanna go to Waffle House? Based on our other responsibilities this was the closest spot to go to instead. I was pleased with the warm service and hearty portion of homestyle diner food. They had a sign up on the door that they are looking for help so I gave them grace with moving a little slow. If you prefer eating at the French Laundry with the governor of California, then this place isn't for you. However, if you prefer to eat home cooking with the only president not elected to the presidency or vice presidency, then you will enjoy Goldmine. (Gerald Ford in case you didn't know, a regular guy who became president in a most bizarre fashion) As you first walk in you realize that the best years of the furnishings is past. However, there is ample evidence of improvements being made. The staff for each of my visits has been friendly and very accommodating on recommendations. The food is exquisite. Where the restaurant lacks new furniture, it more than makes up for it in the food. Everything on the menu is delicious, the portions are very generous. So much so, that one meal could easily be two meals. The menu has breakfast items served Monday through Friday, not sure if the hours for breakfast. Lunch specials are served 11-3. They also have daily dinner specials. In addition to good American comfort foods, there are also Tex-Mex selections. Under Tex-Mex is beef stew, normally do not associate beef stew with Tex-Mex, but this was delicious and flavorful. It also deserved its place under Tex-Mex. If you happen to be in Garland with the family and are looking for a place that serves exceptional food, go to Goldmine. Like an actual goldmine, the furnishings and surroundings are down to earth and rather plain. Also, like a goldmine, the finished product shines with luster and is something to be sought. This review is for breakfast. If you're looking for a place that's new, shiny and trendy then this is not for you. But if you're looking for an authentic old fashion diner with amazingly friendly employees and huge portions then give Goldmine a try! Yes the place is old and some of the booths are worn out, but it had a wonderful small town feel with lots of regulars. The place was empty and the waitresses were sitting and having lunch. It was our first time In but they quickly greeted us and made us feel welcomed. They guided us through the menu , offered suggestions. We started off with fried pickles which are hand battered per order and you can tell! The come served with home made ranch ! oMG it was awesome. We shared the lunch menu of salad, chicken friend steak , side mash potatoes , and apple pie for dessert. I am so glad we shared the servings were big and we didn't finish it all. I only came here once, with several people and did not love my time here. We decided to go for dinner. It was on a weekend and that was part of the problem. It is a bit cramped seating wise. OK maybe very cramped seating wise. Plus they had live entertainment. The music was not bad music or anything like that but it was so loud and so as a result we couldn't hear ourselves real well. Food took forever. And it wasn't very good. My review is from awhile ago and I do not even remember what I had or what my friends had. I do know however, we all kind of wanted it to be a quick "eat and run" dinner. I did like the location, right in the center of town. But my experience in general was not a great one. Burgers - great! Chicken fried chicken - great. The sides could use some more variety but they are doing things right. It's a diner and tastes like a diner but a good one. Friendly staff. I love their burger and the classics like the chicken fried steak and chicken fried chicken. I wish they had broccoli rice casserole because I just know they'd cook it up right. You can't go wrong here. I want to try the breakfast which I am sure is equally as good. I have been back multiple times and they are pretty darn consistent with service and taste. My husband and I are into authentic American diner food and supporting local business. The building and decor are old school traditional. Nothing particularly special to look at but that's not what this place is about. Goldmines is all about great service and classic, tasty southern cooking. Went there for dinner hadn't been in a long time. Was so looking forward to a chicken fried steak. There was more breading than meat and when you dug the meat out it just disintegrated. The meal upset my stomach. The younger waitress was rude and loud and refused to wait on me or even say hello. The breakfast and the breakfast staff are wonderful though I just won't go there in the evening anymore. It kind of shows. I just moved and now this cafe is my favorite breakfast spot. It opens early, which I love, and offers both Mexican and American style dishes. We had breakfast here for the first time, and it was alot of food! It was very bland though. But otherwise it was good. The server was very cool. She even got the cook to make us bfast even though it was passed the serving time (12:00pm). They give you real butter vs the little whipped containers you get everywhere else. Somebody must have been in a hurry to go home tonight. I had ordered the old fashioned chicken fried steak with poatoes and gravy on the side green beans a salad and some dessert cobbler. Well let's just say there's no Gravy on the side heck there wasn't even a drop ok! Potatoes taste soured. The green beans are blah not nothing on them! The Texas toast is soggy and the sweet tea is definitely gone bad can't say how much I paid for the tea but I ordered a large sweet tea and I got a small sweet tea ask her if that was a large. She says that's the only size I got! I should have asked more questions yes but you know what I'm used to their food and their service being good I should have asked more questions but I didn't I'm just glad I ordered a salad and had honey mustard dressing on it so now I can get my chicken fried steak in it and for this I paid. $21.00 and did not even get a napkin in that sack of food. We had high hopes. Close to home and plenty large enough. Food was OK - plenty of it. Price was OK. Service was OK as well. We did overhear someone telling the waitress that the service is a lot better in the morning. We were there early for breakfast. If you want to know how old the building is, visit the bathroom. That will tell you everything you need to know. Their handyman could use some upgrading and come more often. They have a smoking section - you know what that means - we suffered through nicotine air through out our meal. We went to the market afterwards and when we came back to the house my mate commented that we both smelled like cigarette smoke. I hate to say it - we won't be back. If it had not been for the smoke smell it would have been acceptable on a quick eat basis. With the smoke - we'll try the Mexican place next door.
