This is one of the few places in the metro Providence area where you can purchase Chinese BBQ meats by the pound. I stopped here to get some of the lean BBQ pork loin (Char Siu). There was a line to the ordering area, but once I got there the attendant was very quick and nice to pick one piece for me and to slice it as requested. Moved to Newport earlier this year and could not find an Asian market for the life of me!! I was struggling. I went on TikTok and saw so many people posting about this place. Born and raised in the Bay Area, San Jose specifically, there are SOOOOOO many Asian markets. Korean, Indian, Vietnamese, Cambodian, Chinese markets, and everything else in between. I was missing that here in Rhode Island, so I was so excited to come across Good Fortune! My boyfriend is from the East Coast and had no idea what to expect. Off the bat, the outside looks sketchy (to him), but that's common for Asian markets so I was excited. Walking inside exceeded my expectations. So organized, pretty clean, and the store didn't smell like fish (like they usually do, but I'm not hating! I still love those stanky stores). I was amazed at how many things they had inside. Back in the Bay Area, sometimes I'd go to different stores for different things, but Good Fortune pretty much had everything I was looking for! I will say, if you're unfamiliar with different cultural shops and their ways of serving customers, maybe don't come here and stick to your Aldi's or Stop & Shop. This supermarket by far exceeded my wildest expectations. I came here on the recommendation of a friend when I mentioned that I needed to grab some sushi rice and seaweed wraps to make nigiri. I expected to find a great assortment of Asian foods that I can't find at a typical local grocery store, but the minute I walked in and took a good look around I realized I was in for way more than I bargained for. First of all looks can be so deceiving. From the outside the store doesn't look as big as it does on the inside. I immediately was met with the viral mango ice cream treats that have been sending social platforms in a tizzy. I couldn't resist and grabbed a pack of the mango (peach was also available). It's not what I had gone in there for, but I darn sure was leaving with them. When I went to look for the items I had actually gone in to purchase the amount of variety and choices were overwhelming...In a good way. There were so many different sushi rices to pick from and so many different seaweed wraps, but I narrowed it down, grabbed what I needed along with a bottle of beef Bulgogi sauce on the way out. I will definitely be back when I have more time because the frozen and refrigerated section beckon to you as well as a home section and I know there are many more amazing surprises in store for when I go back. read more

Good Fortune Supermarket is your one stop shop for all Asian groceries for everyday essentials. All the aisles are organized and labeled. There is a wide selection of produce and the vegetables are fresh. They even have a bakery section so you can pick up your favorite buns and bread and a section to purchase hot foods and chicken/duck/roast pork. I enjoyed browsing each of the aisles and getting groceries for the week. I think the vegetables prices are a little more than compared to NY asian supermarkets, but our selection is limited in RI and it is good quality. i'll start this by saying that i am a grocery store enthusiast and find it a leisurely activity to stroll through aisles imagining all the things i can cook and bake. good fortune is absolutely one of my favorite places to do that. their selection of homeware, fresh fish, and produce distinguish them from other larger supermarkets in RI. my persian cucumbers will last weeks compared to less than a week from other places. they have great deals often and a variety of non Asian groceries too. some tips are that it's cold in there so bring a jacket and bring your own reusable bags! it's bright lighting inside. the service is generally helpful. there was one instance though that makes their service 5 stars and that was when i brought 30 students in and they helped me process 30 gift cards on the spot. and they were so patient and made it a fun visit for my students. read more

Wow. Just - wow. I've been meaning to stop in here for ages, and now that I've finally made it I'm so glad. The supermarket is huge, and has a massive selection of products and supplies. Many of the labels are in Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, etc (some also have English translations in whole or part but some don't), and the aisles don't have labels indicating what's in them so I was a bit overwhelmed at first, especially since I was shopping from a list. In addition to a robust assortment of Asian-centric products, Good Fortune also stocks (surprisingly, for me at least) an excellent supply of Goya canned and packaged food and spices that are more familiar to me from Latin American cooking. There's also a fresh fish and meat market along the back wall of the store, with (seemingly) aisles of frozen fish as well. Milk and cheese products and fresh fruits and vegetables are around the right perimeter too. I was able to pick up a two year supply (for me at least) of wood ears, which is what I was looking for for my winter staples of hot and sour, ramen (oodles of noodle choices - and premade dashi can be purchased here), and miso soup. Wood ears can be hard to find so I was happy to pick up such a large package. I also found soy vinegar (regrettably not from my old home TaiYuan, but still ok) and thick dark soy sauce. Oh, and the tea bags I generally pick up (or mail order) from a tea shop in San Francisco because I hadn't been able to find them locally before. Score! Be advised: it was really really cold inside. Next visit I may even keep my gloves on. But I will be back - this place requires a longer visit to explore each aisle more fully. Who knows what other treasures can be found. read more

Get your groceries and a hot meal in one go. The kitchen has good "fast food" and here's why: Fast, convenient, and cheap! The first picture is a lunch combo box from the hot bar. The combo came with rice, egg drop soup, and three dishes of your choice - all for $8! There were plenty of dishes to choose from and I believe they change often. For lunch, I decided on braised pork belly, green beans, and pork chops with taro (or some type of starch. Regardless it was good). It's a bang for your buck if you're in a hurry and want real food. My only complaint would be too much rice, but other than that, I'd say it was a balanced meal. Next is dim sum at the hot bar! Minus the traditional cart experience and dining in, the selections were pretty good. Pictured are short ribs with pumpkin (top and bottom) and shumai (left and right). The service is fairly quick at the hot bar and everything is kept warm. If you're wondering "did this girl eat EVERYTHING here?" I will respond with yes. I sure did. Next to the hot bar, there is a pastry section with baked goods. I suggest you grab a roll or two on your visit. The roasted pork is also delicious but something you'd share with family. Overall, I enjoy the hot food choices here. If you decide to shop for some groceries, it is within an arm's distance. Pick up food at the bar, get some snacks, and you're out the door in no time. My hat's off to this Good Fortune supermarket as they set the standard for grocery shopping during these corona-viral days. Even before mandated by our governor, Good Fortune was way ahead of the curve by having customers wear masks and gloves when they enter the store (they will provide you with disposable ones if you don't have your own!) and giving you a number in order to limit the crowding inside. They will also wipe down your cart with cleanser prior to entering the store proper. They're protecting their customer-facing employees as well, providing - and requiring - masks and gloves - and the baggers have an extra measure with face shields! Other groceries - take a page from Good Fortune for going above and beyond for both customer and employee safety. And - they're pretty well-stocked on everything (including TP!) although the meats are getting low; but there's plenty of seafood and produce! read more

What is your happy place? My happy place is finding an Asian supermarket that has literally everything and more! I moved down to RI 3 years ago and when the pandemic hit, it was tough to find an Asian supermarket that has everything on my list. Beyond excited that this place was open! The hardest thing to find is Lao sausages! And I hit the jackpot here! They sell the regular and spicy sausage from my favorite company that makes them in Cranston! If you have never eaten Lao sausage, you are missing out! Tons of herbaceous flavors and great finger food with sticky rice! What's cool about this place is that they have an area with hot foods! Dim sum and other yummy options are available! Crispy pork and Char Sui pork is where I go here to buy them, instead of driving up to Chinatown in Boston! And the bakery selection is endless! Pork buns and egg tarts! Now you are talking my love language! In addition, they have an area where you can buy items for your hot pot at home ingredients! From protein to vegetables are all available! I can go on and on and rave about this place, but, you must go there to see it for yourself! This supermarket has a great fish, meat and produce section. Lots of variety and fresh! Also, they have great roast meat (Cantonese style). We got a duck that just came out fresh from the roaster and it was super tasty. Definitely busy in the weekends and much more manageable crowd-wise during the weekday. Usually go to Asian markets in Quincy but someone mentioned this place so we decided to visit. For us, half the distance to Quincy or about 22 miles from home. In an isolated area, probably a one time factory as the owners did not replace the flooring. Cooked foods, barbecued meats and some bakery goods (in cases), fish market and butcher, plus plenty of canned goods, dry goods, dairy and fruits and veg. Overall, prices on average were higher than Quincy markets, but fruits and veg fresher and larger selection. Didn't really look at the seafood closely. We sampled some barbecue pork buns and they were good. We tried a rice box with soy sauce chicken and roast pig. Pretty good. We will visit again to get another evaluation, but definitely we will visit if we need some fruit or veg. read more

It's a shame that I only recently discovered Good Fortune. I always went to V-Mart for my Asian-inspired cooking needs (which, granted, is still a solid option). However, the sheer size and variety of items puts Good Fortune ahead of its many competitors. They are fully stocked with all types of ramen, rice, noodles, meats, seafood, fresh produce, and more. On my latest visit, I purchased somen noodles, shoyu, oyster sauce, somen soup base, silken tofu, bok choy, green onions, spam, and various snacks. I could quite literally spend hours in there looking around and reminiscing on foods from my childhood. Good Fortune has many COVID precautions in place - the most notable being that one of their employees gives out gloves to shoppers when they first enter the building. The prices are comparable to many other nearby Asian marts. My only gripe would be the price of a can of spam. $4.99?! Such a bummer. Buy off-brand. I will definitely be back for more goodies (and hopefully for a fresh bento in the morning). read more

And you take a number so they know how many people are inside. From my experience, this market has the biggest selection I've seen in Providence. As soon as you walk in, there's a small bakery and hot food corner. You'll see some of the common staples of baked bread like egg tarts, pork buns, etc. Haven't tried the food bar so I can't speak on that. The shelves are filled with a good selection of different products! Some products I haven't even been able to find unless I go online. The aisles are a little hard to navigate through and the order is kinda confusing. You'll find the meats and produce on the right side of the store, and the fish selection is in the very back. Honestly, the fish smell is so overwhelming to me I spend as little time as possible in the back as possible! If you stay on the left side, past the food bar and behind the freezers is where you can find the home goods. It's kind of tucked away and I found it the first time by accident. It's got pots and pans, small appliances, and beauty products. They've got some pretty good stuff if you're looking for home stuff. read more

She asked 2 different employees a question about noodles and both of them swatted her away without responding. She then asked a lady who was stocking goods if she spoke English. first off this place is by far the best asian market in the state for selection. They have full aisles of "spanish" and american foods, and you can find sections with Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Thai, etc canned/bagged foods (but the sections are labeled in Chinese so unless you can read them you just have to go down each aisle). The produce section is for me the real star here. The bad? It stinks in there, always. The meat/fish market part just wreaks, maybe I'm just overly sensitive. The other day we went to Good Fortune Supermarket in Providence, Rhode Island to try our luck to buy a bag of bright-looking raw chestnuts because they had remained my favorite food all my life. As soon as we got home, we roasted them in our oven. I was waiting for the moment to enjoy them. 30 minutes later, i took out and cracked one, to my great disappointment, it was stale and watery, and the taste had no chestnut smell or flavor. No need to drive to Quincy anymore! It's in a very hidden place on Cadillac Drive beyond where the DMV driving test center is. It is a large store and not very crowded. (In that respect nothing like Quincy!) Parking is easy. (Also not like Quincy!) They do not have the marketplace or the prepared food stalls as in Quincy, except for prepared buns and the roast duck which is yummy. (Be sure to boil and then strain the bones for an excellent broth. Buy the fresh ramen noodles to put into the broth while you are there ;) The selection of greens is amazing, as are the prices. I always feel like I've gone on vacation after shopping. Go when you have enough time to leisurely wander the isles. The price in the fish market is unbeatable. This market is good if you know what you're looking for. I agree with the reviewer that said that customer service is nonexistent. That may be because hardly anyone speaks English. They need to hire some English speakers. I was at first impressed with the fish market side, but most of the fish is whole and if you don't know what to do with it, you'll be disappointed. I bought hard shell clams (quahogs) and they were good but I could have got them cheaper at a regular fish market. I bought what I thought were sea scallops, but I was very disappointed. They looked good in the store but I was unable to sear them. They were either wet scallops or skate wing. They tasted fishy and unpleasant. I might go back here for Chinese condiments and sauces but I will have a list with the Chinese characters for the product. Let's see if that works. read more

This place is very spacious and clean. This place also has the largest parking lot for an Asian market that we've ever been to. And the spots are nice and wide so it's virtually ding-free. No cart return designated areas but I saw employees out side constantly rounding the carts up. The employees are super helpful here. They walked up and down the aisles with us until we got what we needed. The girls that helped me were Hispanic and they knew what I was talking about. There were also Chinese speaking employees but I'm not fluent so I'm glad I have options now! Everything that I needed to make Dragon Boat Festival Sticky Rice Balls was found here. Which included: dried shrimp and scallops, salted duck egg yolks, sweet glutinous rice, bamboo leaves, lapyoke and lapcheurng, dried shiitake mushrooms, dried mung beans and peanuts, and frozen whole chestnuts. There is an extensive selection of Hispanic products. The seafood and produce seemed fresh and offered a lot of variety. Fresh meats are cut to order or you can get prepackaged fresh meats... in case you're not in to mood to talk to anyone! Also adjacent to the market is a dim sum restaurant. I haven't tried it yet but I will give an update as soon as I do. This is 100% my new go to spot for shopping for Asian foodstuffs. ****UPDATE**** Finally tried the dim sum restaurant. Not bad. Maybe 3 1/2 stars. You can order on the Tablets on your table or take your table punch card up to the food table and then have it stamped there. The food wasn't terrible but I felt that the dishes got cold very quickly. My favorite sweet dessert is the salty egg yolk bun (Lau Sa Bao). It was soooooo runny. Almost like melted butter. It was so viscous that when you bit into it, it would immediately leak out and burn the side of your cheek (think: biting into a steaming hot soup dumpling (sieu loong bao). So that was a bit disappointing. Tons of seating here. A bit more pricy than other places. But if you're pressed on time I think that this place is a better option because you can just walk up to the table, grab what you want and chow down. The most insanely Asian place I've ever been stateside. There was a heavy rain and they just put up tarps and buckets because of the leaky roof - you might easily think you're somewhere in Southeast Asia and I love it. I really hope they get the place fixed up long term because it's a gem! You walk in and the first thing on your left is Peking duck for takeout. Holy cow! Fresh takeaway food, made to order or pre-prepped. There's a huge cookware section with everything from tiny plastic chairs (think Vietnamese noodle bars) to fine dishes and soap. Then there are aisles upon aisles crammed with every type of noodle, sauce, frozen fish cake, and vegetable. The checkout lines were packed with pickled vegetables and Japanese candies. I couldn't even get to some of the pickeld vegetables because the place was so busy, even though checkouts moved at a good clip. Five stars and more. I got a bunch of hard-to-find ingredients. They even had a whole display of LaoGanMa (Chinese chili sauces). I picked up some excellent ramen cups I'd never seen before. I got tteokbooki (Korean rice cake). Pickled radishes. 2 flavors of LaoGanMa I'd never gotten to try before. Mochi (Japanese ice cream in glutenous rice balls). It's all here. And everything I had seemed perfectly fresh.
