It was our daughter's birthday and her restaurant choice was the Good Karma Cafe. So the family gathered there to celebrate. It is a very small restaurant with a large menu. We decided to share a number of dishes: Crispy Baked Tempeh Buffalo Wings, Pineapple Mango Tempeh, Mac and Cheese, Asian Fusion BBQ Seitan, Grilled Portobello Sandwich (My Favorite), Tempeh Ruben, and Philly Seitan Cheesesteak. I have not dined at many Vegan Restaurants, but I found Good Karma Cafe has the best Vegan restaurant food that I have eaten. We then ordered desserts:, Chocolate Ganache Cake, Tiramisu, and more. I asked the waiter to put a candle in one of the desserts and we ended the dinner by singing Happy Birthday! Overall a very nice dining experience enjoyed by all. read more

First time going to a vegan restaurant and I would totally do it again. It's not like you can eat this stuff everyday and lose weight but this is a great place for vegans to get the junk food they cant eat at a regular restaurant. We got the vegan nachos and mac n cheese. Hard to tell it was vegan because it tasted so good. I might prefer it over regualar mac n cheese somedays. And we got the tiramisu for dessert. I came in for the fried chick'n sandwich they featured on Instagram & it did not disappoint. Honorable mention: the Asian bbq tempeh sandwich was PERFECT! Thin sliced, crispy tempeh! Love this little vegan restaurant. My friend introduced me to this place a few years ago and we have been going ever since. I usually get the buffalo soldier which is delicious. I love buffalo wraps and it really does taste like chicken! The best part about this place though is the ranch... I'm not kidding. It is so good I wish I could buy it in bulk. Went there last evening for a laid back anniversary dinner with my husband. When we arrived, the place was packed, but there was a two top opening up in a front, so we thought we'd grab that and have dinner.. nope. The server told us that she had to reserve a 5 top for people coming in( they weren't there yet ) and that she had to serve them( they weren't there yet, again ), before us( we WERE there ). To my knowledge, this place doesn't take reservations She very easily could've grabbed a chair, and converted another table( a 4 top that was also leaving..). But, nope. She'd rather lose business. We loved the food there, but this attitude, AND the fact that the place was literally SMOKE FILLED, is completely unacceptable. I have been vegan for over 10 years and I remember when I found out this place was opening. The first time I ate here was the first fully vegan restaurant that I went to, and it was so exciting to order ANY item I wanted off the menu. My family and I would travel 30 minutes each way just to eat here. Whats more important to this story, is that all of these years later and I am still just as excited to go back. Great home cooking!!! Fantastic vegan food spot in red bank. I was on a vegan tour of New Jersey with friends and this was one of our stops. Great to go with a group as we shared the dishes and were able to sample quite a few things. I liked pretty much everything except for the sriram sticks which were very oily without much flavor. Others in the group enjoyed them though. The nachos and live bruschetta were the hits on our table. Service was awesome. Decor could be a bit better... it's clean and neat, but a bit unimaginative and frumpy looking. The decor of the bath with hot pink walls and creative lamp made from recycled bottle caps is 100% better than the rest of the space with boring beige walls and wooden chairs etc. Would come back for sure though. read more

Had a great time here, and glad we made the drive to Red Bank for some good, creative tasty vegan food. We ordered the buffalo salad, which was solid and came with a creamy dressing. There were small squares of fried seitan. I got the Asian seitan sandwich, which came with a side salad along with Gogo dressing (spicy peanut). Strangely enough, the star of these dishes was really the dressing and sauces. The tofu, seitan and tempeh is all cooked very well. The seitan in my Asian sandwich was marinated in bbq sauce and cooked to a crisp, but just wish there was more of it in the sandwich. Given everything on their menu seems like something any good vegan would want, I would really recommend one of the bowls for at least someone's dish. We weren't able to try them and they seemed amazing on the table around us. Parking is on the street, and service was very good. We also got the Elvis smoothie, a combination of banana, chocolate and soy milk. Will definitely be coming back here! read more

I drove over an hour to eat this food because of Instagram and we ordered pickup when we were 15 minutes away and we couldn't get through and when we finally did they put us on hold and then they kept taking other calls when we were putting in our order and they were like its gonna be forty five minutes after they charged us and I was like you gotta be kidding me and when we finally picked up the order they only gave the two of us one fork but you know what? I have been wanting to try this place for a long time and finally went with a friend who goes here as much as she can. Adorable small little place with limited tables so I suggest if you can go off hours that is the best. We arrived at 12:45 and only waited 15 minutes for a table for 2. Service was excellent. They have Gluten free items labeled and even though they don't have a designated area for preparing GF food I was fine, which is good as I am very sensitive having Celiac. We both had the Kimchee Bowl with Tempeh instead for tofu. Loved every bit of my lunch! A macro inspired bowl filled with brown rice, black beans and baked tofu strips or tempeh. Topped with fresh arugula, pickled daikon, carrot and cucumber and our homemade kimchee. Finished with a drizzle of spicy sriracha sauce. GF Dessert we split the cheesecake, homemade tofu cheesecake served in a nut crust. I can't wait to return. Writing this review has me craving for their food. After three attempts at trying Good Karma Cafe, after last night's meal, I can honestly say that this is one of the greatest restaurants ever! and ESPECIALLY in the Ocean/Monmouth country area!! I am not vegan but I have been vegetarian for 3 years and I generally prefer vegan food, so when GKC opened up I was immediately there. However the first dish I tried - the BBQ Tempeh Wrap, wasn't exactly my favorite, and like other posters on Yelp, wasn't entirely convinced with the prices (they can be steep). Last night it all changed though. Possibly the best sandwich to ever be created by humans: the Seitan Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich!! Can I get a "WHAT WHAT?!" This sandwich was so insanely good, I was in denial! Honestly, since becoming veg, I have never had a good sandwich - not the way I used to eat them, anyhow. But this sandwich - with contained seitan, caramelized onions, nutro cheese and deliciously cooked kale, on semolina bread - changed it all! My boy got the healthy burrito (which he definitely regretted after trying my dish!). We couldn't help but eat all of the dish - just so good! And in house meals get a side salad with some of the best dressing ever! Really delicious and vibrant colors all over my plate - gosh I was just so happy. I was too embarrassed to tell the cook to her face so hopefully she reads it here: You are amazing. That thing was cooked ~~perfectly~~~. This sandwich changed my opinion of veg sandwiches, and most importantly, of GKC. I am totally going to go back whenever I am in my home town, because hollyyyymollllyyy!!! I can't ever live without it having now tried it. I don't even know if I'll be able to try the rest of the menu! Overall: awesome service, cute little setting. Oh and we noticed there are some week-day specials: Tuesdays it is buy one entree, get the 2nd half off, and Wednesday it is buy one entree, get a kids meal for free! :) Stop reading, and go try that sandwich!! We drive all the way from Piscataway to eat here, and every time we have a better meal than the last. I've tried everything from the TLT to the Earth Burger to the peanut satay to pumpkin cheesecake and many of their amazing specials. On Valentines this year they had an amazing dessert that my boyfriend & I hope they do again one day! This is probably my favorite restaurant in NJ and one of the few places where we get appetizers, entrees and desserts and enjoy ourselves. Fact: I live in Bloomfield. Fact: Good Karma Cafe (GKC) is in Red Bank. Fact: Red Bank is 45 miles away from Bloomfield. SO, the fact that I make such a trip for GKC at least twice a month should clue you into how awesome this place is! Pros: 1. GKC boasts an extensive menu (check it out online), with MANY gluten-free options. The food is so, SO good and portions large, which my inner-fatty appreciates. My favorite dishes include the raw nachos, any of the salads with tempeh, veggie burger, mac and cheese, and their pies! Oh, their pies... 2. This place has... amazing vibes! It's tucked inside a little gem of a space right on East Front Street (I've never had trouble finding street parking), and is bright/sunny inside. I can't help but smile while I sit in here and eat! 3. Wait staff is friendly and always willing to make changes to dishes to accommodate different food allergies, etc. Cons: 1. I've never experienced this personally, but I have witnessed the long wait for a table during peak hours (fortunately, I was already seated and eating). This place is tiny, so call in advance in order to determine whether you'll be able to sit or should just order take out (they do run food out to you in your car, which I think is awesome, by the way). Gosh, what else is there to say? Thinking about this place makes me exceptionally hungry for GKC goodness, so much so that I will definitely be making a trip in the next few days! read more

My previous review was one star because we traveled to red bank during their posted business hours but they were closed with no explanation. I did finally give them another chance, but wished I didn't. Like many "vegan" restaurants they don't have a menu based on either traditional or modern vegetarian or vegan cooking. They have fake-meat versions of "regular" food. It's a gimmick rather than embracing fresh vegan ingredients and instead center the menu around seitan and tempeh, which real vegan cooks don't use all that much. They also seemed to be working on a zillion desserts in the dining room. Like it was a factory or something instead of a dining room. (They looked pretty gross too, so didn't try them. They were clearly being made for long term storage or to sell to some other business... why you can't do this some place else I don't know.) So, unimpressive food, of course overpriced for their gimmick, and rude service. Don't be so full of yourselves: you're a waiter. Nothing wrong with that, but you're not better than me. You're supposed to be in customer service, at a place called GOOD KARMA for god's sake! I was going to up it to two stars for not horrid food, but considering my previous experience and the unfriendly and unpleasant environment, I'm leaving it one star, and I will not be giving them another chance ever. read more

Color me unimpressed. After a great experience at vegan food truck The Cinnamon Snail, I became convinced that vegan food could be delicious. As a result, I became really enthusiastic about trying Good Karma... but on my first visit, I quickly learned that it was without basis. The place is teeny tiny, barely room to breathe, sitting on top of the people at the table next to you. The servers were unfriendly at best, cold at worst, staring at us like crazy people when we asked if we were supposed to seat ourselves or wait to be seated (because we'd never been there, & it's not immediately clear upon entering). Our server seemed annoyed when I asked if a dish that said it contained "sauteed seasonal vegetables" included mushrooms, to which, I told her, I am allergic. "Nothing here has mushrooms," she told me, practically rolling her eyes. Hey, sorry I didn't feel like vomiting the rest of the day; just checking. I ordered the coconut crusted tempeh, served with a creamy coconut sauce & pineapple mango chutney atop jasmine rice & those sautéed seasonal vegetables. It was colorful, looked like it would be pretty good - & it was. The pineapple & mango were surprisingly tasty with the peanut sauce, & everything tasted fresh. Ultimately, though, it left me full but dissatisfied. It just felt... so vegan. Nothing particularly creative or innovative, nothing to disguise the fact that this was all basically rabbit food - just a plate full of fresh things, a glorified salad. My boyfriend got the Earth Burger & said basically the exact same thing. To top it off, we were seated next to the most obnoxiously pretentious, stereotypical vegan couple on Earth. The woman treated our waitress terribly, asking for the ingredients in EVERYTHING & going on a tirade about some sort of fake sugar that she found to be a "bodily pollutant." The rest of their conversation focused primarily on bees, pollination, & locally sourced honey. Needless to say, I couldn't get out of there fast enough - expect that it took our server ages to bring us the check &, once we did, to run out payment. We practically ran out of there when all was said & done. If I went back - though I don't feel particularly inclined to - I would want to try the grilled tofu with sweet & spicy chili sauce. Sounds like it has potential, but my first Good Karma experience was so mediocre that I'm in no hurry to return. read more

Bleh :( 7 PM Saturday. Free street parking after 6 PM which was nice! Dining area is super cramped. My friend and I narrowed ourselves into a small window corner. People constantly walking in and out for take out orders-- which is fine if they didn't keep taking the attention of our own servers. Oh also disclaimer: my friend and I aren't vegan and never tried a vegan meal so we had no idea what to expect. We ordered the earth burger and southwestern seitan. Okay I can honestly say that it's probably the worst way I've spent $30 in a restaurant. And again, maybe it's because we're not vegan. But it was just blaaand and both of us just ended up literally picking at our food. It ended up being really wasteful; though we boxed the rest for home, neither of us will probably try and finish it. Also another thing I noticed was our waters were a little colder than room temperature because there was no ice or lemon. Literally just a glass of water from the kitchen. I'm sure there's good reason why the place was blowing up with take out orders, but I'm sure they were all vegan people. I would have been less harsh but the prices are expensive for not using any animal products. Glad I got to try a "legit" vegan meal but now I learned my lesson. read more

I love the relaxed vibe in there and the way this place is set up. It just feels like home. It's just so cute and has it's own personality. Really adorable art with a hindu-ish loving theme. Kind of small, but cozy with nice window seats. Wait staff incredibly kind. We got the love bowl with tempeh which was sooo yummy and fulfilling, with the green chile and cilantro hummus. Both were pretty excellent. Really large portions. Expect to take some home. This is absolutely the best vegan restaurant next to Kaya's Kitchen in the shore area. I loved everything about it. I got take out a couple weeks ago. Was very excited to see they offer a lot on their menu that all sounded great. We got the mac and cheese, pad thai, buffalo "wings", cheese "steak", tiramisu, and lemonade. Right off the bat, these portions were huge! We had left overs the next day of everything. The mac and cheese had good flavor (spicy!). The coconut "bacon" was very clever but the noodles were overcooked for my taste. :/ Pad thai was odd. Didn't really taste like pad thai which is surprising because I make vegan pad thai at home every now and then and it's not hard to keep the thai flavors while omitting fish sauce and egg. Noodles were also overcooked. Buffalo "wings" were good! Spouse ate all of them and said they wanted more. The cheese "steak" was pretty good. The meat substitute they use has a nice texture and it's a satisfying sandwich. It's def messy though! Tiramisu was again odd. Didn't taste like Tiramisu. It tasted more like a caramel pudding. It was still nice to have as a sweet treat, maybe they just need to name it something else? Lemonade was bad. It tasted like it was instant, not fresh. Great place to take an ever-so often needed break from eating meat and even dairy. Creative menu and spectacular desserts. I've been here a few times, trying something different every time, and have never been disappointed. It's a cute little cafe with friendly staff. It's a great little vegan place. The food is served very quickly and is very flavorful and healthy; you really do feel like you're nourishing your body. They're always very busy so sitting in to eat can put you elbow to elbow with someone. Street parking is available all over Red Bank. Also, there is paid parking a short distance away and a beautiful atmosphere to enjoy your meal while overlooking the Navesink River. read more

Great spot in downtown Red Bank. I highly recommend the Gado Gado Salad. It's a fantastic asian salad with a peanut based dressing and large slabs of tofu. The vegetables are fresh and well selected for the dish. Central Jersey doesn't have a multitude of vegan spots and the Middletown area has even fewer. This place is a diamond in the rough. The service is good and I have always felt that the employees are dedicated to their lifestyles which shows tremendous care on their part. The mac and cheese was delightful featuring a creamy taste, and large portion! The philly cheesesteak was super good, from the roll to the seitan to the cheese to the greens inside. Finally the dessert, although only my first time ever having the dessert it was very good as well. Some ways they can perhaps improve are carrying gluten free alternatives for things such as bread and pasta, i also believe they could have a few other options not including seitan and soy. We just picked up dinner to go. Husband says staff was extremely friendly :) inside is small but cozy. We had the Philly cheesesteak and the Mango & Pineapple Tempeh. The food held up in the containers for the 25 minute ride home! Both dishes were beautiful (see pics) Husband says that the Philly cheesesteak didn't taste or remind him of that but it was an extremely delicious sandwich on its own. That's the issue with Vegan food; we should just enjoy it for what it is and not what it's trying to be. He ate every last bit of it, saved the salad for last, lit up with delight when he saw that there was another piece of Seitan inside the salad. I tasted it as well and agree that it was very tasty, would order it again, but definitely not a Philly cheesesteak. I had the pineapple & mango tempeh. Plate was colorful, fresh, and so so so good. The coconut crusted tempeh stayed crispy, good texture and didn't taste "healthy" in a good way. Veggies and rice cooked perfectly.
