I did overall enjoy this cafe. They were bustling with people and had quite a selection of ever-rotating menu items and plenty of advice from the servers on what they liked. I got their burrito, and my spouse got their GF nachos. Both were super tasty and pretty hefty for their price. No complaints there. The flavoring was definitely what you'd expect from a raw restaurant. It definitely seemed lacking in some spices, but the combination of ingredients were still good. I was really looking forward to their enchiladas, but the server informed me they were serving that for a few hours yet, they just hadn't removed the signs, which was disappointing. It was also pretty small in terms of seating and space, so when business picked up, the overall commotion and food smells was a bit overwhelming - but I get it, given the area and space they're working with. It did take awhile to get our cheques, given that the early dinner rush was starting. That was the hardest bit, because I wanted to get out into some fresher, quieter air, and had to wait awhile to do so. However! Don't let this stop you from trying their food! My wife and I always enjoyed this place and patronized it regularly after Down to Earth closed years ago. But something has changed. Not sure if there is new management. We went there the other day and I had a bottle of expensive wine. Usually the server will open the bottle for you and always did so in the past. This time the server handed me the opener tool. Ok no worries as obviously she lacked any knowledge or experience so I opened it myself. The worst faux pas was at the end of our meal. I had only drank a half of a glass of my wine bottle as my wife does not drink. We left forgetting to take the bottle with us and left a 90% full bottle with a cork in it on the table. When we reached our car we realized and scurried back and arrived back there within two or three minutes of our departure. I asked about our wine bottle and she told me they disposed of it. I thought she was making a joke and was stunned when the other server confirmed it. This goes beyond inexperience and borders on incompetence. Although both servers are young and very pleasant it seems they lack any semblance of common sense. You would think that they would have apologized and offered some sort of compensation. We had given a very generous tip as we always do (even though the service was poor but pleasant), which I now regret. Although we always enjoyed their delicious food we will not be back. The ambiance is perfect. This place is exactly what you think of when someone mentions a vegan restaurant. Imagine stepping out of a time machine to 1968 Haight-Ashbury and walking into a vegetarian (I don't think the term "vegan" was bandied about much then) hippy restaurant: tight seating with only a few small rickety tables. You're practically eating elbow to elbow. The bathroom is painted hot pink adorned with some Hindu pictures no doubt lifted from the Bhagavad Gita, and some hand paintings that appear to have been done on someone's recent acid trip. Service is provided by pretty young girls, sans makeup, in loose fitting clothes, perky and energetic, presumably from not contaminating their bodies with the inherent toxins of animal flesh. Each dish is freshly prepared by the attractive young lady with the blue streaked hair, and, I assume, tattoos, deftly manning the stove. Did I mention that all the girls are pretty here? This is one of the few truly authentic vegan restaurants around. So it deserves one extra star just for that. The food is really quite good and fresh. I respect the fact that they don't try to disguise the food as animal protein as so many other vegetarian establishments do. If you're here, you should be here to eat VEGAN, or at least, VEGETARIAN food. For chrissakes, respect the food and call it what it is! Don't make up euphemisms and doll it up to make it look like meat. This visit I had the Pineapple Mango Tempeh which consisted of coconut tempeh over brown rice with mixed vegetables and pineapple mango salsa. The salsa was unnecessary. This was one of the tastiest and most ingenious tempeh dishes I have had, and will try to replicate at home. Another time I had the Love Bowl, which is my favorite dish here. You can get it with either tofu or tempeh over brown rice, black beans, and kale and a dressing. It's a delicious melding of textures and flavors plus you'll feel like you gave your body a health present. The various smoothies and drinks are also ones you won't find elsewhere. My favorites: the Circulator and the Immune Booster.. For dessert I had the Raw Pie, which just about knocked my socks off. It Had a nut crust with chocolate cashew cream filling, and cocoa nibs sprinkled on top. It was sooo decadently chocolatey I almost had a Harry Met Sally moment. Some reviewers complain about the prices here. Hey, it's not cheap to eat good quality healthy food. And, while some ingredients are pre-cooked, each dish is freshly made to order. Also, although they don't make a claim of being 100% organic, many of the ingredients are. For what you get, the prices are fair. read more

We left our chocolate cake in a to-go box there and passed by again and a kind waiter(possibly the manager) spotted us and returned the cake. Also the food was so delicious and the vegetables used in my salad was so fresh and crisp. Great selection from the menu too, a lot of cool flavors to explore. Overpriced and overhyped. Their daily special was $19 (price not advertised on the menu) for a tiny portion size and haphazardly prepared ingredients. When I questioned the random price hike, I was informed that the average price of most dishes is $15. That logic made more sense to the waitress than it did to me. The prep was oversauced in orange sweet glop, the seitan overcrisped, and the overall flavor combinations did not harmonize well and just came off as unimaginative and uninspiring. Given the poor execution and simplistic ingredients, I'd do a better job recreating any of their dishes on my own, except I'd know to use a less heavy hand on the oils and sugary sauces. Vegan is not synonymous with healthy, so don't be fooled. Servers are slow and the environment is very claustrophobic and feels like a fire hazard. The tiramisu and cheesecake were the only saving grace. Relative to comparable vegan food I've tried around the US, Toronto, and Vancouver, GKC is not a destination restaurant. You can find cheaper, better prepared, healthier food at Whole Foods. Two stars for bad karma. read more

This is my favorite restaurant in the world -- yes, the world! I've told every person I can about this place, and try to bring them when I can. Every time here is an absolute treat, and not an expensive one either. I try to get a new thing from the menu each time because it'll be worth it! Also, be sure to ask for the daily/weekly specials because that's usually what you should get! Don't skimp on dessert either, everything is great. My personal favorite is the bliss cup (essentially cashew chocolate mousse) but you cannot go wrong with anything they have here. The Mac and cheese....just listen to me and order the Mac and cheese. This place was a welcome site when I recently traveled to jersey for a workshop! They were suppose to supply food but ignored the fact that I am gluten free and vegan. I did a quick yelp search and this place showed up. I'm so glad I picked it out of the list of other places. It's small inside but not horrible. It was busy as it was lunch time. I ordered and waited 7 minutes from start to finish (awesome for fresh food) my waitress was super sweet and I was a little upset that the table sitting behind the counter literally left her a 25 cent tip. Needless to Say I thought that was pretty shitty and gave her a 10 dollar tip even though I just got takeout. We drive a LONG way to come here and have been twice in 24 hours due to needing to get to the brunch (Southern-style sausage and biscuits!). It is always packed, with not much waiting room, so I hope they eventually expand. Hearty comfort food that is just flavorful and wonderful in all ways. Try to get a window seat if you can. I cannot say enough about this place. We got the "tacos". I place those in quotes because they were the saddest makeshift tacos I have ever had the misfortune to attempt to consume. They were wet, lukewarm, large strips of under-seasoned tofu on half soft tortillas. The Live Pizza was a bunch of vegetables on a very dead dog biscuit crust. The buffalo wings were as cold and lifeless as the wait staff. The Live Lasagna had me very lively running to the bathroom. I informed the waitress that the lasagna had a sour taste to it. ***I will preface this review by saying that if you use "delicious" as your drinking word while reading this, then you should have a solid buzz going by the end. *** This past Saturday my girlfriend and I had planned on coming up to Red Bank for a concert at the Count Basie Theatre. Since she loves Vegan food, has been getting me more into it over the last few years, and we haven't been to a good Vegan spot in a while, I did some research into what was good at the Jersey Shore. Lucky for us, I stumbled upon the Good Karma Cafe and its stellar reviews and let me tell you, there is a reason that they are loved on Yelp. Although it can be a pretty tight squeeze depending on where you sit, and you may get stuck next to a cranky old couple that frowns when you try to get past them to your seat like we did, it is a small price to pay for the absolutely stellar food. Due to rave reviews, we respectively opted for the Philly vegan cheesesteak and the earth burger. However, the decision proved to be tough with so many other intriguing options such as the Indian plate and live lasagna. Once our food arrived, it didn't stand a chance as we cleaned our plates in just a matter of minutes. Everything down to the last bite was incredibly delicious (keep in mind that this is coming from someone who has carved a meat category into their daily food pyramid). You could tell that the ingredients were fresh, the dishes were made to order, and that everything was bursting full of flavor. After dinner we were both stuffed but couldn't resist ordering the chocolate ganache cake and a cup of coffee with soy cream. The cake was moist, full of chocolate, and was the perfect end to a delicious meal. The coffee was also fresh and gave me just the boost I needed for our show. I was originally going to award Good Karma four stars just because at one point I asked our server for an extra side of carrot ginger salad dressing (also delicious) and she never brought it over, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I will give them the benefit of the doubt because it was a Saturday night, they were busy, and the food was just so damn good. We will return with pleasure. P.S. The butternut squash soup was unlike any other- a little spicy and so full of flavor!!! The earth burger was equally delicious and so fulfilling. The waitstaff was helpful and the kitchen is right there, you can watch them cooking. The menu even includes a glossary for ingredients you may be unfamiliar with. It's this kind of open, homey atmosphere I like. And the place is small, best to go with 1 or 2 friends. It's actually not a bad place to dine alone either. Or get take out (grab a cookie to go!). The mini samosa appetizer was tasty, baked not fried.The sweet chili tofu included four big pieces of grilled tofu over rice and veggies. As a carnivore that occasionally enjoys a good Vegan meal, the challenge is finding Vegan food that is not bland nor boring. The key to flavorful Vegan food is in the seasoning of the protein and the sauces. Good Karma creates, tasty "comfort food" that is delectable by any standards not just Vegan ones. I've also bought the in house cook book, "You Won't Believe It's Vegan". The book tells the story of a Vegan chef whose passion is to create, delicious, flavorful, organic world class meals using locally grown fresh products that are good for the earth and the local economy. Sounds like a fantastic idea. Eaten: Green Chile Cilantro Hummus - Zesty. Crispy Baked Tempeh in a Buffalo sauce - Crispy Tempeh with a generous amount of Buffalo sauce heat. Gyro - The seasoned Seitan in a tomato base sauce is delicious. Cheese Steak - Amazingly Flavorsome. Live Lasagna - Full Bodied. Indian Plate - Savory. Pineapple Mango Tempeh - Amazingly tasty, the balance of the coconut crusted tempeh, over brown rice with the pineapple in a coconut sauce is delicious. Just a quick update!! Barbara and I made the switch to full-vegan back in late January (2015) and since then we've come here to eat many many times.
