This is a very crowded restaurant. We came around 6 pm on Friday and the bar was packed with a long waiting list. Luckily we had a good server. It was a long wait for our table. The burger was a little on the dry side. I remember the 1st time I had this dish. It was tender. Their small plates are large enough to share. I like this place because it is family style portion. I'd been wanting to come here for a while because multiple Rochesterians have said it's the best restaurant in town! The ambiance was nice and it was fun to eat at a family-style-oriented-restaurant. Because sharing is encouraged, you get to try a number of dishes! My party decided to order 1 item from each section of the menu which worked out because in reality, only 1 thing in each section actually seemed appealing to us... I get that having a limited menu is probably part of Good Luck's vibe, but it limits who can have the opportunity to enjoy their food. Ok, I'm just going to cut straight to the point and tell you to get the burger. Do not hesitate. GET. THE. BURGER. I'm not even sure how I can possibly describe the flavor, other than very rich and unique. The meat was so unbelievably juicy. It is technically a plate to share, but I got one for myself and am having the rest as leftovers. We got here at 6, and the dinner rush was just getting started. The ambiance of this place is very nice and comfortable--it's really big. If you come during the day, there are huge windows and it looks really nice with the natural lighting. I also love that it is a bit low key; there isn't a huge sign out front, and you wouldn't know what this place was unless you were looking for it. Our service was prompt and waitress was attentive and polite. We got the Oricchiette and the organic greens as appetizers, which was plenty for the 4 of us. Both were great. The oricchiette was definitely different from anything I've had before, and I enjoyed the little kick it had from the chiles. My dinner consisted of a variety of flavors, so I was happy. I've loved everything we got on the menu, and they always have good specials and change the menu frequently. The "it" restaurant in Rochester for the past decade and for good reason. Often imitated but never duplicated, many restaurants have emulated Good Luck's model of craft cocktails, shareable food and an upscale, intimate & low-lit dining atmosphere. However, most of the time, the other restaurants still fall short in comparison. Good Luck just does everything well. The cocktails are some of the best in Rochester. Just off the top of my head, I really like the Gilded Rickey (gin), Paper Tiger (sake) and La Escopeta (Tequila + Chilis). They also have a decent selection of draft beer. Food-wise, Good Luck also doesn't disappoint. They are famous for their gargantuan burger & fries that is intended for sharing (2 or more people). The Red Lentils dish is surprisingly my favorite plate, with a good combination of sweetness and spiciness. Their pizzas are also excellent (mix between Neapolitan and NYC style). The atmosphere is also what brings people back. They probably have the best bar space in town. It takes up half the restaurant. The dim mood lighting is perfect for an intimate night out. Their full food menu is available at the bar, which is another plus. The only potential negative is that the bar is packed and quite noisy, so don't expect privacy or the ability to carry out a quiet conversation. Finally, despite being arguably Rochester's most popular restaurant, customer service is still top-notch after all these years. The waitstaff is well trained. I haven't received any push-back in asking for separate checks in a large party. The bartenders are also usually pretty great in getting your drink orders in, despite a packed bar. read more

The food is shareable too!*** We had a wonderful experience here. First off- shout out to the hostess for her attentive and professional service. She told us it'd be about a half hour to 40 min wait, but unfortunately we couldn't do that (had made plans for after dinner)... and she heard us say this to each other and I was about to sadly admit we couldn't wait... but then she offered to squeeze us in at a reserved table but we'd had to be out within an hour. What a great restaurant for gatherings and good food. Every time I've had dinner at Good Luck I have walked away satisfied and full. It has a great atmosphere with dim lights and cozy vibes. I came here with my family and given the bill for a family of 5 (only 4 dishes) and no alcohol- over $300 including tip- it was disappointing. First it was extremely loud - so much so that talking at a normal level was impossible and the sense of relief when we left was extreme. My son said - that was not fun - it was so loud I couldn't enjoy the food. Second the food was a hit and miss. I didn't like the gnocchi dish at all - and the burgers had a gamey flavor ( however kids liked them) . The steak was delicious- although I am not sure $100 worth of deliciousness given that the side was about 5 cooked radishes on some oily arugula. The lamb dish was the most flavorful and really delicious. Third- the dessert we had were a let down. The ice cream was very good. But there was some puff pastry was dry and tasteless. My husband and I came with no reservation and we're able to have an appetizer and a few drinks at a bar side table before being seated at the bar. The cocktail waiter, Rafi, and bartender, Eric, were excellent. Great food, great atmosphere, it was exactly what I wanted from a night out. I came here with some coworkers for a little celebration so we were in the mindset of treating ourselves already. We made a reservation for about 12 people and making the reservation took some time. It took a little over 3 weeks to get a reservation together because of the back and forth. I think it would be much easier if all the staff or if there was always a staff member that was able to access the reservation list because it almost ended up with me making two separate reservations because of lack of communication between the staff, but luckily we figured it out! On to the food! (and drinks) We ordered: - red lentils ($12): these were delicious! Thy were like a curry sauce with plenty of bread to dip in. It wasn't really at all spicy either but had great flavor and was pretty smooth texture wise. It feeds about 4 people - two of the burgers ($28 each) with one medium and one medium rare: the burger of course was delicious. The temperatures were cooked correctly which is actually quite rare to find these days. The fries were delicious and the sauce the waiter brings you is a must on the burger. I will say I wish there was more slaw to go on the whole burger - duck pretty much 3 ways ($32): The duck was quite the surprise of the night. I definitely had never had duck sausage, or pulled duck before. The third way was kind of like a duck brisket. All three were delicious and a couple of my coworkers were saying they'd love to buy the duck sausage in bulk. The side veggies were just as good too! The pickled egg believe it or not was amazing. - pork belly special: Sadly because it was a special and your lucky girl was not paying, I don't know the price of this. But I will say this, the pork was V tender. It was a good chunk of pork belly with some nice veggies but that beautiful pork was the star. There wasn't too much flavor wise for me but the tenderness made it a win. - fried chicken ($28): the fried chicken is sooo delicious. All you need to know is flavor is on point and that white meat is TENDER - margherita pizza ($13): the pizza was also good but not the most mind- blowing. The crust had a nice and interesting flavor too - and an extra side of fries ($10): a coworker had an extra hankering for fries Overall, food was delicious!! They had a seasonal asparagus salad is quite possibly the best salad I have ever had. I don't know where the asparagus was. Never identified it in the salad. Really just looked like a Caesar. Went here with a few friends, the gimmick here is that this is a sharing "family style" resturant. The theme and menu were similar to Ember, but the quality was not. While the food was good the portions on some of the shared items were small. Specifically everything we ordered. Many of the menu items were also a bit out there. There should be some more generic stuff on the menu as well. Pizza for instance. I ordered the oxtail and generally liked it but not enough to order it again. My drink was good though. read more

Then I was double charged on my credit card for the whole meal (almost $200) and it has been six weeks and I still don't have a refund. The restaurant is a bare bones plank table and mismatched chairs local with a large bar and dim lighting. What the restaurant lacks in fancy furnishings, it makes up in superb meals. While the menu may not be jam-packed, it is created with care an executed to perfection. We started with an appetizer of charred broccoli topped with a proprietary sauce and slivers - an abundance of slivers - of parmigiano. From the opening salvo, it became evident that the portions were meant to be shared. At least most portions. The margherita pizza I ordered was one of the best; if not THE best; outside of the last one I ate in Naples in November. Naples Italy not Florida. It was made with fresh sauce, mozzarella of buffalo - as is done in Naples - and fresh basil. It was cooked perfectly. I will admit, had it not been but for my wife's and friend's inability to finish the 'one pound hamburger' they decided to split, I would have had to order a second pizza. The margherita is not a dish to be shared; at least not by hungry pizza affesionatos. If you like coffee, "Good Luck" is the place for you. It comes to the table in a French press along with a timer for pushing on the lid. The coffee is hot and rich with no bitter aftertaste. The dessert is made fresh as are the ice cream choices. My wife ordered an apple crisp a la mode. The vanilla ice cream was rich and creamy and complemented the crisp perfectly. In addition to excellent food, the staff is first rate. If in doubt about a wine choice be sure to ask the bartender. While waiting for our table; the maitre d' was able to squeeze us in, hence my strong recommendation to call in a reservation early; the bartender suggested a sparkling moscato: 'La Spinetta' from the Asti region of Italy. If you prefer your moscato on the sweet side, this should be one of your mainstays. The bartender also suggested a chateau segonzac for my wife. A melange of merlot and cabernet from the Bordeaux region of France. An excellent choice for a less weightier red. Had we stayed another night in Rochester, I would have returned to "Good Luck" for another excellent meal. read more

There's really something tremendously special about Good Luck. Even though it's not close to the majority of other bars and fine dining restaurants of Rochester, it has a gravitational pull that draws some of the most interesting characters of our city. You can't reduce the appeal or allure of Good Luck to any one element - not the food or beverage selection, not the thoroughly on-point aesthetic of the interior, not the clientele, not the service. It just all comes together in an extremely potent mix, that makes you feel like you've made it, like you've found the essence of what adult life in Rochester has to offer. At least, that's how I've felt on my handful of visits, and I hope to have many more. Although I haven't ordered from the food menu, I can speak to the drink selection, and it is excellent. The drink menu epitomizes the concept of a menu made with genuine love for the subject matter. For starters, their draft drink ($10 upon my last visit) is a Moscow Mule. Moscow Mules on draft, particularly in Rochester, should tell you something about what you can expect from a bar as far as taste and flair. From the cocktail list, I've enjoyed Black Cat Tea (scotch, curacao, earl grey tea, lemon, orange bitters), Lightspeed Champion (Irish whiskey, squash-cantaloupe syrup, grapefruit, suze) and Blank Maps (Krogstad akvavit, cardamaro, sherry, pepper, celery bitters, and amaro-salted herb), all of which (esp. the Blank Maps) have knocked my socks off. The Inamartina is next on my list, but be warned - they make drinks STRONG at Good Luck. I could go on about the beauty of the interior decor (unfortunately, I don't have pictures), ranging from the old-timey bathroom fixtures, to the beautiful hardwood flooring, to the various trinkets and decorations near the entrance, to the elegant paneling and lighting by the entrance, and so on and so forth. Basically, Good Luck represents a certain excellence of service, presentation and product that is both ultra-aware of the global movement in hospitality culture (think Brooklyn, San Francisco and Toronto) yet incredibly true to Rochester itself. I highly recommend this as a truly iconic Rochester establishment, and one well worth visiting if you're out on the town for an evening. Sweet with a nice spice and crispy flatbread, which we immediately asked for more of. I will get this every time I go back (which will be a lot). For dinner, my partner and I split the Goat Cheese Gnocchi which was just absurdly good. Just melted in your mouth. We also had a Margherita Pizza. Super crispy and nice. The bill came to about $65 for a round of drinks, an appetizer, and two entrees. This place is an absolute steal for their super high quality of food and service. I've been here twice. Food has been fantastic! Burger (already quartered) is good for sharing, with a generous side of fries. Braised oxtail is a refreshing starter with a tomato base. But it is more on the soupy side and tastes light. Smoked duck on the regular menu is duck in three ways: pulled, breast cutlet, and sausage, paired with mustard, pickled onions and cucumber slices, with a wedge of corn bread. Duck is seasoned and cooked to perfection: tender, non greasy, and juicy. The sausage has a good amount of spice, probably from peppers. Cod cake is smoked cod (contains chopped veggies like bell peppers) with dandelion greens and radish salad dressed in something creamy. The smokiness really jumps out at you but not overpowering. My friend and I also enjoyed these drinks: black cat tea, mysterious date and zac zac. Strong and delicious! read more

My wife and I went on a friend date with a couple new to Chicago recently, and they had moved to Chicago from Rochester, where I grew up. I asked them for one restaurant reservation and they both damn near shouted "Good Luck!!!" as the place we needed to go. So, when I went back to Snowchester for Thanksgiving, we made a late reservation to give it a shot. And I have to say...there were some wow moments. But not all of them were, as we had hoped. First, the positives: that bibb salad was very good, with perfect lettuce and a bleu cheese so light I could imagine making it my go-to for cheese on almost anything. But, and I know this is weird: the croutons might be the best croutons I have ever had. Three of us couldn't stop talking about them--they are CROUTONS, for God's sake...why are they so good? Then we tried the pasta dishes; both the gemelli and the garganelli were strong. And, as others have noted, the cocktail list is quite an interesting mix, although there are probably too many different ones on the menu, including a few classics that round out a creative list of drinks developed by the bar. I tried Blank Maps and Knock on Wood; both were excellent. I ordered a third drink but I ordered it with dessert, and our server only remembered the desserts (his loss, I guess). Now for the less-than-positives: the burger. The fries? Great, and of course, for $28, there better be a lot of fries, and Good Luck doesn't leave you hangin' on that front. You are getting a ton of fries, many more than a sensible adult ever needs to eat. But the burger? Essentially devoid of flavor. We ordered it medium rare and it came up more medium than rare, but still--we were all a little shocked that the meat didn't burst with more flavor, despite being generally juicy. I ate my quarter and realized that I needed to eat another quarter to leave this meal full, so I did that, but I didn't want to. I would have to come back here to order this burger one more time to be sure this wasn't a mistake, but I'm really shocked by this given the hype on the meat. Second less-than-positive: the prices. For Rochester (and no disrespect comes with this--I just don't think of Rochester as the kind of place that has expensive casual restaurant/bars), this is borderline assault. $21 pasta dishes? For a size that is close to a half-order in some other cities like Chicago? And the burger could easily come down from its $28 perch to be offered as an $18-$20 option with less of that mountain-of-fries problem. But then, some of the apps are large, like the salad and the fries (we saw other tables get the fries as an app), and then desserts are very cheap. Even the cocktails fall into what feel like very Rochester-friendly prices for craft cocktails. Why are the entrees so much here? Third, and I don't blame the bar for this mostly, but if you don't like/love trendy, you might be turned off by the atmosphere. I was surprised how much of a scene this was (I didn't come in knowing "the deal" here), right down to a bar scene that doubled as a movie set with a speed-dating mockup. Every table featured the sexy people, with a random table here and there featuring sexy people with their parents, or me, dressed like a hobo to make sure at least someone looked completely out of place. (Thanks to the staff for letting me in, though.) I need to come back to try that burger, and I'm very glad I went since others have given me the sense that this is one of, if not the, best restaurants in the city! read more

This is one of our favorite date night spots. The Good Luck burger is amazing! Great drinks. Great spot for date night or for a family night out. The kids loved the Mexican Coke bottles when we brought our daughter out for her birthday dinner! We've never had bad service here. The table and mismatched chairs were difficult to fit your legs under, barely any room, lucky for me there were plenty of seats to chose from. Our waitress was awesome, I felt like a schlep making a reservation for 10 and having half that show up intermittently. She was gracious and attentive regardless. We ordered The special pork loin with grilled peach and brie. It was very smokey in flavor. But kind of a chemical smokey. The peaches were cooked well, the brie was soft but hadn't been attended to, just a chunk laid on top, I think a meltyness would have been nice. The grilled greens were chewy and pretty inedible. Lentils, great flavor, one spoon to serve, none to eat with wahhh wahhh wahhh. I asked for one and was given what I would describe as an indecent size for a lady to wrap her mouth around in public. Ox tail with tripe, I'm not a fan of tripe but I have to say it was cooked well. A hearty plate better suited for fall or winter in my opinion but I didn't order it. Grilled butcher steak sandwich, I'm having a bad beef run. Except at another restaurant lately. This steak was cut rather thickly, cooked medium rare (all good), but grizzley and chewy. The bread and aioli out shined the meat. Good Luck burger one medium rare, one medium well, you could see the difference. I have to give it to them for a well cooked burger, great char on the outside. Fancy sauce, cheddar and pickle were all great flavor and quality. The pickle was a small portion for the size of the burger on a shared plate. Perhaps the best dish of the night. The pile of fries were crisp and well flavored too. Ketchup available in request. We also ordered the fried chicken. The chicken was also very good, moist inside, crisp flavorful coating, not too thick, not a layer of sog under the crispy bits. The squash side was spicy, from maybe black pepper and an unidentified other flavor I didn't love but I also couldn't leave it alone for some reason. Their clientele seems to have shifted, I would not visit this venue later in the night. It would be nice if they would enforce a dress code, and have more specials/happy hours.
