You get this diluted soup and service which both isn't very good but the rest is amazing that still deserve my 4 shiny stars! I don't even have to mention much of the items but we got anchovies with spare ribs clay pot rice, their 4 treasure which is eel, Chinese sausage lop churn, Chinese meat lop yuk and BBQ pork and very flavorful and the last one is smooth chicken with eel. The best part is ALWAYS the crispy rice that sticks to the pot. DO NOT THROW THAT OUT!!!!! Put your arm muscles to work and scrap every bit of that deliciousness out of the pot. Came on a Wednesday night, and we waited about 30 mins for a table. Extremely packed and only about 10 tables in the restaurant. They need to give some numbers out for the waitlist instead of using their memory to remember who came first. At least while we were waiting, they gave us the menu and we got to preorder our food and when we sat down, our food came not too long after. The menu is extensive and has lots of different clay pot options. We ordered #5 (Four Treasures: $12.99), #74 (Chicken Feet Ribs: $12.99), and #48 (Peanut Rice Noodle Roll: $5.80). Each person gets a complimentary soup and small plate of Chinese broccoli with their dish. I really enjoyed the Four Treasures one. Super filling and flavourful. The Chicken Feet one was ok, and just to note, the ribs aren't the usual Chinese spareribs you'd get at dim sum. Overall, this place is super affordable and the dishes are good. The table has peanut sauce (so good), soy sauce (that has so much umami and slightly sweet that it pretty much goes with anything), hot sauce, and table salt. We ordered 3 claypot rices which are the salted fish meat patty, baby shrimp with lap churn and egg, and pork ribs, scallops and shrimp plus an egg. The ribs, scallops and shrimp were my favorite because of the flavor of all the protein seep into the rice and enhanced the flavor of the rice as it cooks. However, they were all great and you couldn't go wrong with any. We also ordered the rice roll with diced water chestnut, carrots, celery, mushroom. We ordered through Uber eats and the value was still decent. The rice averages $15 per pot and you can add $3 for extra meat. There was so much meat that we couldn't finish and had leftovers. The rice was nice and hot. Comes in an aluminum foil container. The only reason why I couldn't give the full 5 stars was there wasn't enough of the rice crust at the bottom. Not sure if it's because it's Uber and they had to rush the cooking. Each meal comes with a small container of veg and also a soup or drink. We also ordered the rice rolls and that was very tasty! Came here for dinner with family. It was suggested by my foodie niece. I agree with most of her Asian recommendations, with the exception of deserts. She knows nothing about deserts! Luckily, my niece could speak and was able to order for us. The funny thing is the menu has English & Chinese descriptions. The interior is not much to look at. The casserole is good and old school traditional. But honestly the service is so bad and the attitude they give is so terrible that it lost 3 star I can take the dirty place that hasn't been cleaned in over a decade. But to be outright rude to people makes me want to avoid this place at all cost. It is not worth it. Especially since rice casserole is not exactly a dish that is rare to find in Markham. The amount of dodo you take is not worth it especially since it's not cheap either. I would give it 1 star if the food wasn't good. But overall you have to decide what your priorities are when going out for food. If you care about food above all else than come here if you care about both food and service. We saw people who were eating inside, every pot seemed really delicious, but not sure what they actually had ordered, we asked the waitress which ones were the popular ones, my husband had a Four Treasures Rice, including preserved meat, preserved duck, bbq eel & bbq pork. I ordered Octopus & Chicken on Rice. It took about 15 mins to be got ready. We went out for a walk, checking out other places. Then came back for our order. We went to a park close by, and enjoying our lunch. The casserole rice was in a aluminium foil tray. It was really keeping it hot. We had a separate small bowl of vegetables and soya sauce to pour on top of the rice. It was really traditional Chinese meal. There was also a small bowl of soup, but no taste of it. Great hole in the wall for claypot rice. Portions are huge and food is delicious, comes with free soup and side of veggies. They actually cook the rice in the claypot for a bit so you get a layer of crispy rice at the bottom, this adds great texture to the dish. My pork ribs with salted fish and raw egg on rice was delicious! The pork ribs were well marinated and the pop of salt from the salted fish and creaminess from the raw egg meshed so well together. Every bite made me want to take another. The added texture of the crispy rice was really great and definitely added to the dish as well. The rice noodle roll was amazing, probably the smoothest in the city and best rice noodle rolls I ever had. I tried the rice noodle rolls at their other locations and none were as good as this location, so if you're visiting this particular location, definitely get an order of rice noodle rolls. The service is typical for any hole in the wall Chinese restaurant, quick and efficient but don't expect anything over the top. Definitely my favourite place for claypot rice in the city! read more

Was recommended this place by a friend and finally got the chance to try it! Overall, found my experience really good. The food is pretty cheap for what you get, is delicious, and the portion sizes are great! One stone pot rice is about $12-13 and comes with two toppings (I went with the BBQ eel and minced pork). Additionally, you'll also get a soup and some veggies. The food tasted delicious and was a good amount of salty. We also tried the cheng fun and I thought they made it pretty well. One downside however is that it is a cash only location and they don't accept any cards. Overall, based on the food, the portion, and the price, it's definitely worth it for what you're getting! Octopus was good too, not as big as I thought. It's like dried octopus actually. We appreciate the Chinese broccoli on the side too and my favorite Coke Zero. - BBQ Eel & Chicken [GET]: My boyfriend got this dish, and the chicken and rice are just as good as mine. Every time we make an order from this shop, there is a lot of attitude. They offer little to no service and even with no customers, they could not care less if you are there or not. During my wait, 2 customers had get their orders exchanged as they received the wrong orders (maybe they should label them?!?). What really irked me was they subsequently gave the returned meals to others that happened to order the same dish... these are Covid times, please respect the customers. Back to my order... I have requested each time for them to label each rice as we do not want to open each one then to assign accordingly (a simple sharply or piece of paper with the corresponding rice dish is it that hard??. This time I specifically asked them 4 separate times and low and behold... same crappy service. UNLABELLED rice dishes that we all had to play, let's open and exam what this is... Good Taste Casserole is what it is. Situated in a busy Chinese plaza, it is a top contender as a place to eat at. I've been here a couple times now and the consistency is definitely noticable across all boards. It gets busy during dinner time so there may be a wait at times but it's nothing unreasonable. They have a simple menu and I always get the steamed spare ribs and chicken rice. To begin, every order comes with Chinese soup. As a note, the soup is very light and natural in flavor. There doesn't seem to be any msg or salt and you can always add your own. I think it's a great beginning to balance the flavorful rice. The rice is cooked in a way so that it's fluffy in the middle but still a bit crisp on the edges. Overall, the dish is aromatic and delicious especially when you add in the soysauce to enhance the flavors. They also serve each order with a side of vegetables! I find that a lot of Chinese restaurants don't do this so it's pleasant to see them do it. Moreover, it complements the steamed meats. The vegetables change from time to time but they are always cooked well with a hint of flavor. I never leave this place hungry and I'd reccomend it for people of all ages. read more

This is my favorite place to get hot pot rice! It is so good! I always order the preserved meat and chicken. Although I don't eat too much of the preserved meat, it adds so much extra flavor to the rice! I tried the chicken and mushroom before and it was a little bland, so I definitely recommend getting preserved meat in your order! My partner always gets preserved meat and short ribs, and he loves it too. He can be picky about HK food, but he also loves this place and raves about it. I'm not a big fan of their soup so I usually ask for coke instead (you get a choice between pop and soup). Location/Service This place is in the New Mongkok Plaza (sorry don't know the proper English name), on the far end, right beside Blue Ocean Cafe. The sign is a little hard to spot, so might be a little tricky. Plenty of parking is available, just be aware it's a little crazy at times. The restaurant is small, prob fit around 15-20 people at a time. There was a little waiting time, but usually not too long. Staff were aunties, which to my surprise were nicer than I thought, pretty funny at times when you speak in their language. Food This place is famous for the clay pot casserole rice. Almost over half the menu items were different kinds of it. I chose the beef with raw egg. The raw egg was perfect as it will slowly cook and infuse with the rice since it's super hot. Quantity was abundant, esp on the rice portion. The beef was flavourful and chewy. Very good comfort/affordable food when your craving for that homemade feel without cooking at home. I opted for take out and have been hesitant for awhile thinking I will miss out on the clay pot experience from dine in. But it did not disappoint! The bottom has that crunchy authentic clay pot feel because they cook it in the aluminum foil container. Amazing price, comes with soup and veggies (a bit too little) and if you have a big appetite, should get extra meat with your rice. This is really as average as they come with dishes that aren't very memorable in terms of flavor or presentation. The portion sizes were decent with barebones service and a small restaurant. Food is closer to 3.5 stars. This is a solid homey claypot rice spot. We've ordered both takeout and delivery multiple times from here. Our go to order is their mixed preserved meat claypot rice and their minced pork with salted egg claypot rice. We've also tried a few others like the eel and the chicken as well and both are good. Such comfort food! Love that it also comes with a side veggie and a side soup or drink. Even for takeout they're able to achieve that crispy rice bottom! We agree with the comments on the rude service when we order takeout and pick up from the restaurant, so we tend to order delivery instead to avoid the unnecessary attitude. The best part is when you get those slightly crispy bits of rice at the bottom, mixed well with some soy sauce, it permeated right through the rice, TASTY My favorite toppings so far is the unagi, never had it before in this claypot style. We haven't been back here for a while and wanted to come back here. We got here before the lunch hour rush. The restaurant is cozy, with very minimal decorations. The seats are primarily brown leather booths, with only a couple of tables having chairs. The drink cooler is located at the back by the supply closet. The washroom was inside the supply closet. It was surprisingly large and clean. A poster of a beautiful waterfall hangs by the back as well. We ordered #34, which is salted fish and minced pork on rice. Daughter liked it a lot and thought it was flavorful and perfectly salted. She thought it was better than the ones we get back in the US. We also ordered #21, which is preserved pork rib and preserved fish on rice. We don't know what type of preserved fish it is. Hubs thought it has that seafood taste and it had plenty of umami. The pork rib turned out to be the rib that's underneath the pork belly, which means that it's leaner pork belly meat. He would probably order the regular pork belly in the future, to save his teeth. Overall, he liked it and thought the rice was flavorful and great. We ordered raw eggs for both rice dishes and they were magnificent. The rice dishes came with a side of vegetable and a choice of soup or Coke/Canada Dry. We ordered soda. After seeing the bowl the soup was in, I wish we ordered a soup. It felt like we missed something there. Lastly, we ordered #52, which is minced pork rice noodle roll. Daughter liked it a lot and thought it was nice and doughy. Perfect texture and quality. Casserole rice is as old school as it will get. When you dine at Good Taste Casserole Rice, it's going to be a pretty old school experience. Expect a no frills type of experience... expect to sit in tight quarters... expect the owner to be nice (not so much with one of the server). The menu here offers very little by the way of breadth but is heavy in the depth department. What do I mean? You only have two main choices: steam rice rolls or casserole rice, but an array of toppings you can combine in either. The steam rice roll are solid. I wouldn't say they are exceptional but solid. All I've had was shrimp and bbq pork ones...the fillings are run of the mill. The casserole rice again is not anywhere near the best I've had but despite the sea of Chinese restaurants in Toronto there is really not many that will and can make a mean casserole rice. The strength of their rice is the crunchy layer of rice at the bottom. I think they managed to consistently deliver there. The sweet soya sauce was on point. The preserved meats and sausage were generally good quality and that would be my number one choice of topping. On occasion we will get the meat patty with fried squid just to mix it up. The dried squid usually did not have a strong enough taste which is disappointing; the good ones will have the flavour transfer to the meat and the rice. The pork patty was likely made with store bought ground pork which doesn't give it the bite that it should have. The good news is every order of casserole rice comes with a very small serving of yu choy. It also comes with a complimentary soup. The soup is almost always apple and pork. Taste is pretty bland most of the time but I guess the positive is there is for sure no msg. They recommend you to add your own salt for taste but it's not the same as having flavours transfer to the soup via the ingredients. Overall a 3.5 out of 5. If there were many better casserole rice places their score would probably be downgraded. read more
