Name the neighborhood and I can tell you the best second hand shopping deals. My favorite in San Francisco? Bar none -GOODBYES on Sacramento Street. It's the thrill of the hunt in this store. Where else can you find a $1500 Versace dress for $400 next to the perfect little black dress for $15.00. Designer duds and regular clothing all mixed into a delightful mishmash of shopping adventure. Some people may prefer Designer Consigner but me I like the "messiness" of this store for the treasures that it reveals. I have NEVER left this store without scoring some great deal. read more

Here's the deal. I lust after the finer things in life but the 'bulge in my pocket doesn't match the bulging of my eyes (The 'other bulge in my pocket, buddy!!!). Hence my new interest in consignment shoppes. Good Buys is pretty hit or miss. One trip I dropped $500.00 to pick up two worn once Zegna Sport Coats and a barely worn John Weiss black P-COat. I wore the Zegna to Wilks Bashford and fell down laughing. The salesman walked up to me and said "I see you're wearing a Zegna Travelor ($1.5K) but it is last year's model. That is the problem with us men, never learning to let go...!!! Better Yet, I wore it to work and my boss was fingering it the moment I walked in wearing it ("You are a State WOrker and you are wearing Zegna? On your salary?!!! Hmmmmmm!!!). THe last four trips I pawed and came up with nothing, but that is the charm---the hit or miss. FYI, No designer Jeans to be had ANYWHERE. I LOVE this place. I adore the great finds I have gotten over the year as I am too stingy to shop for new clothes at the boutiques at Union Square. If you don't mind paying 20% of the new prices plus finding a diverse and eclectic collection, that is Goodbyes. And my wife LOVES the dresses and shoe deals. So...to say that the staff at Goodbyes is rude is an understatement...patronizing is much more accurate. And frankly they lie...from website "We accept all items of clothing and accessories that are clean, in style, and ready for sale."..I drove in from the East Bay,after confirming this on the phone, with 8 beautiful suites..cleaned recently..designer names....well cared for....as well as leather jackets, ties, designer shirts...and had them all rejected by an arrogant lady who stated...'no good too old' and literally pushed me out the door. And in the shop...I previewed for prices before bringing in my items...were suites in the same style and vintage...lets see..consignment store...no risk to them....clothing does not sell and I come back and pick them up...really.... Do not consign or buy here, they deserve to go out of business. read more

I'm not in the habit of leaving reviews but I am posting this in hopes of saving others from the nightmare I experienced with these folks. My family had an extremely poor experience with this store. We recently lost a loved one tragically and suddenly. He had a very large wardrobe of designer, high end clothes, shoes and bags. We made three separate phone calls to indicate that we had 13 boxes worth of items. Each time we were told that we could drop the items off and that they would go through them and then let us know what they could and could not take. Once we arrived, we were met with rudeness and we were made to wait while they picked through each item. We had also been told that they would donate what they didn't take, but this proved to be untrue. This would have been fine, but we were on a tight schedule with a rented U-haul and had to navigate far through SF just to get there. In addition, we hadn't factored in waiting while they offensively picked through everything, causing us a late return charge for our U-haul. The especially disturbing and sickening part was watching the bitchy sales lady pick through our loved ones clothes with disdain and disgust. It was hard enough having to donate these items, but then to have someone scrutinize and criticize them in front of us was last straw. We took their castoffs to Out Of The Closet where we were met with open arms. A couple sales people even came out to help us unload our items. I will never shop at Goodbyes, nor will I endorse donations to them. Compassion and pleasantness are words lost on these people. read more

Agree with some of the other reviews...rude staff! When I went to bring in my second bag of clothes, a woman was on the floor rifling through my first. She looked at a pair of wool Banana Republic pants and said "this is not our market, you should bring this to Haight St." Really? Then she rambled off a list of designers they will accept including Ella Moss and a few others I had and had not heard of. I understand if they won't accept clothes from Banana, or Ann Taylor, but she did not have to be so snooty about it. And to suggest I go bring classic clothes in great condition from those stores as well as a Tahari suit, a Coach raincoat and briefcase and a Neiman Marcus cashmere sweater to sell on Haight St. is idiotic and rude. When I pointed out a shlocky looking red and green shirt hanging near the register that looked like a cross between an ugly Xmas sweater and a tie dye from Haight St. and asked her what designer that was, she said "oh, it must be a new arrival, I'm not sure." Then I handed her two leather handbags with the paper stuffing still in them and told her they were never used. She looked at one and then questioned me "this was never used??" Um, yes, I was not lying the first time I said it, and even if it were used, THIS IS A STORE THAT SELLS USED ITEMS!! Then she said "well, it says it was made in Italy so I'll take it." At least she did ask me if I wanted the items back if they did not sell or should they donate them. I said I would definitely take them back and donate them myself to Community Thrift on Valencia as they give 40% of the proceeds to a charity of your choice which I guess was better than what they did. She huffed and (snootily) disclaimed any knowledge of how the charity end of the business worked. I think she had delusions of grandeur as if she worked at some super high end retail shop and not a used clothing store. Although I imagine a sales person at a high end retail shop would be more polite. Again, I am not annoyed that she didn't take most of my items, just at her very unpleasant attitude! read more

This place is a dump! my friend and I were in SF for a daytrip and we saw this store and thought it would be a good idea to check it out. First off, the sales people are so freaking obnoxious! they were rude and kept following us around 24/7. I get that businesses don't want shoplifters, but it makes me very uncomfortable when a sales person is behind me watching my every move! I finally was tired of being treated like a thief, and decided to take my business elsewhere. If they are so afraid of shoplifting maybe they should stop being cheapasses and invest in some anti-theft devices. I would never step foot in this store again due to that. Also, I noticed a sales lady yelling at another sales lady because she let a woman in without leaving her bag at the front counter; the woman just ran into the store to find her friend and tell her where she was going. I'd rather shop somewhere where both customers and other employees are treated with respect. read more

This place is a downer. Not sure how jaded you get running a joint like this but apparently it takes its toll. Selling stuff is hit or miss, staff all seem to be having a bad day. I go here and get stuff. I pretty much spend $200 everytime I go. Sometimes that means a giant shopping bag and other times it means a few awesome finds. Beware of the cheap new clothes mixed in with the consignment high quality clothes. I wish they wouldn't do that - it seems like they get samples and some cheap filler clothes. The racks are usually too full to browse, so come with a reasonable amount of intention and patience. The staff have some crazy system of only allowing four pieces in the dressing room, which makes the whole operation take longer than necessary - but as they'll remind you, they've been doing this for 20 years so they know what they are doing. The prices are good - just high enough to dissuade you from buying 'maybes'. read more

I wish I understood the logic of this place. I have tried to sell some things, a beautiful Zegna mens suit, a gorgeous pair of leather shoes, Italian, mens. Both were in near perfect condition. The women who look at the clothes were nitpicking down to a pulled thread, and ultimately did not take them. Ok. However, when I shop here I have to look at stuff very carefully. I think the stuff looks like a lot of junk, and I don't care if they have the price tags on. Perhaps they should take better care of the stuff once they do decide to take it. I also think what they sell it back to you for is highway robbery. I'm done with this place. I don't feel like they have an attitude, however, I think they are perfectly nice. read more

A lot of quality clothing here, but prices are very steep for second-hand goods. I browsed their inventory for 30 minutes, but finding a good deal is like finding a needle in a haystack. Even used/worn Samba Addidas shoes were $50+, which is essentially full retail for the same shoes new. I'd be a huge buyer of their stuff if prices were discounted 30%+. Owners must be pressured to raise prices to make a profit because they aren't selling much, but at the same time they are shooting themselves in the foot...at least that's the way I see it. They charge consigners 50% commission, so why not lower prices. It's not like you'll lose that much more money by having lower prices. Poorly run business model if you ask me. Not in a rush to shop here again anytime soon. You are a second-hand clothing store, not freaking Neiman Marcus. Wake-up! read more

Store is fairly well merchandised if you don't mind sorting through the budget labels to get to the good stuff. Quality varies - as does the cleanliness. The pricing is not consistent. I strongly object to giving up my handbag at the front counter. The 'clerks' aren't all that friendly. read more

Though on occasion I did find a decent piece I liked, the service mostly has been so bad, so unhelpful, contentious, and snobbish, I was left with the feeling I had been taken for a ride. I'm all for recycling, and find used clothing much more interesting than new. A work associate recommended Goodbyes to me, and I checked it out a few weeks ago. Be very careful. When I bought my shirt and tie there, the cashier rang up the non-sale price and tore off and threw away the part of the price tag that included the lower amount. i stumbled upon this place, and at first i noticed that the prices were pretty high, so i didnt feel much like looking around. but then i see this jacket that i liked and it was actually priced well (not a great deal, but amidst everything else there it seemed great). i was about to pay for it, when i noticed a big stain on the arm. so that explains the price. so i struck out there, but my wife found a few items at the womens store and she felt like she had a great experience there. read more

I think you have to make a distinction between whether you're looking for mens clothing or womens clothing. Many of my female friends are unimpressed by their selection and pricing, so I have to assume that it's not super-duper. On the OTHER hand, the mens section is great. I have gotten some amazing good deals, including a freakin' pair of Wilkes-Bashford slacks that didn't even need to be altered, and 2 pair of Lucky jeans for cheap-o. I don't spend any more time in this store going through their clothing than I would in a normal department store, and I don't walk out feeling overwhelmed or exhausted, which for a shopping-phobic dude like me is a real feat. Their clothing tends to be more expensive than a used clothing store, but it also tends to be of better quality and in better condition. It also is a bit more conservative, with many nice suits and ties. I haven't seen a lot of junk on the shelves - there are vast swathes of clothing that I wouldn't touch, true, but that's more a matter of taste. As far as the staff, they're pretty laid back. One thing I would say is that they keep the store neat and orderly so it's easy to find your way around. read more

A good store- bought a few shirts and still came in at under $100. The first floor holds the best clothing (Gucci, Armani, Yamamoto, etc.), although those expecting thrift store prices might have sticker shock (a Gucci button-down still goes for $100). The outerwear selection is generally appealing, with a nice selection of leather jackets, blazers, and a couple Burberry trenches. For some reason, the other half of the first floor is composed of hideous Tommy Bahama-style retirement wear. The upstairs area carries mid-level brands and older designer clothing that is either faded or merely ugly. Denim selection is abysmal, but overall worth a visit. read more

I LOVE GoodByes! I have been a loyal customer since it opened. It is so fun to shop there, no wonder it's been open for 17 years! They have loads of new and used clothes with a lot of great designer stuff to choose from too. The shoe section is great with lots of sizes and designer labels. I bring all my friends there when they come to visit - we leave with bags and bags and revel over our great findings for hours afterwards. Most of my favorite things in my wardrobe are from there. I love the fact that I can ditch shopping bags, purse & stuff @ front counter so I can peruse all the racks hands-free. GByes doesn't keep unsold merchandise for months, so frequent visits pay off. Wide range of designer labels, and I've never encountered less-than-helpful employees. My current husband hates to shop & I get sick of his tired old wardrobe. One quick trip to GByes per season and voila! he's ready to be taken into public in hip well-fitting clothes. read more

Both stores are lovely, but not the attitude of 2 salespersons........yesterday, I took some lovely clothes about 9 items in for consignment. A new salesperson hung up my cute gray fur jacket. Soon... a customer inquired about it. "It is not priced yet". Then the sales lady looked at my things and said that they could not take just one thing.... and that the others were too old ... needed to be 2 years old at the most. I asked to have the head blond with glasses look at my consignment. Too old. She did not even see all of my things... just decided that all of it was too old.... 2 gorgeous black suede fancy western jackets grouped inside a pretty Nordstrom jacket......... other things.... she handed me a paper.... yes... they were older than 2 years... but lovely lovely....Here is a list of other consignment stores.... I have consigned there before.... I did not appreciate this 'coldness' and indifference to my lovely items.... Searching through the main store..... I found an old but in good condition coach bag...(I have the same or similar model)...more than 2 yrs. old. Then... walking into the 'sister store across the street', another saleswoman was busy with a customer, then the saleswoman spent time looking at her computer.... I stood around waiting for a greeting a .'.hello' greeting. Nothing... so I commented to her....."Oh... I was busy" was her reply.... This is not the nice store that it has been in the past.... I have gone there for years. These salespersons could definitely have been more pleasant to me..... they have seen me there many many times.... Please:... just a smile... a nice greeting.... a welcome on your face...... if you can't take the consignment.... then please say something nice, .... we all appreciate kindness and sensitivity ..... not the place you want to consign your clothes. the latina gal who does the consigning on the men's side is condescending to the point of being rude. she doesn't seem too happy to be there, and shows it by trash-talking the business. there are a few good deals to be found here if you are willing to go through a bunch of overpriced trash for an hour or two. it shouldn't be your first stop on any shopping trip. read more
