I've always driven by Armadillo Palace and seen the wild armadillo statue outside and wondered what it was like and was not disappointed--very western, as the name suggests! We visited Armadillo Palace for a full restaurant buy-out event, and we liked it. The food was good, and there was plenty of food to try--my favorites were the shrimp gumbo, shrimp empanadas, and the pork tacos. I normally do not leave reviews, but I feel compelled to this time. We stopped in for dinner after a long day and were greeted by friendly staff and served some really delicious food. The carne asasda and the pork chop were especially good. My kids loved the mac and cheese and the ambience was really nice. But when we arrive at the restaurant's parking lot, we realize our rental car window was smashed in and items stolen from the car. Two other patrons were victims as well. This happened in broad daylight. While it's not the end of the world, it ruined the rest of my evening plans with my family on our short trip in town. My real issue is that apparently this is a thing that happens in the area. I would have appreciated a heads-up! I'm born and raised in New York City and this type of thing doesn't even happen by me. If this is so prevalent, why is there no security guard in the parking lot? One of the staff members took a report and checked the security cameras, which showed the perpetrators smash in my window just a couple of minutes after I walked into the restaurant, so apparently they were targeting this lot. The staff member was nice enough, but basically told me this happens in the area. I would come back to the restaurant by cab, but I wouldn't drive my own vehicle there again. Um this place was a taste bit disappointing. Positives the venue is excellent and primed for a live music function. Now I've been to their sibling restaurant across the way Goode company seafood and it is rated GAF (good as f***) so to say the least. I had expectations. Service was kind of slow for them to not be busy. We started with as appetizer which was the guac. They do guac different but it tasted good. Now my food was mid o'clock. I ordered fried okra, a fish taco and fries. Fries are a miss, I don't like the breading, fish taco was good and the okra was absent of seasoning. The chocolate cake taste as though it came off the sodeco truck was defrosted and covered with candied pecans. I can skip dessert next time. I guess a positive was they atleast serviced it with blue bell vanilla ice cream. Now less than great food but I'd definitely come back for the venue and or the bar. read more

We came to this place thinking we were going to eat bbq. As our waiter, Jacob, told us the same restaurant (next door) served bbq outdoors or to go, we decided to stay here and give it a try! We're so GLAD we did. We ordered empanadas, fried okra , and discada from the appetizers, and my husband had pork chop and sweet creamy corn. Jacob brought pecan pie as a "welcome" treat as it was our first time at this place! Everything we tasted was delicious, fresh, and full of flavor and good textures. The event was well organized, the vendors offered a variety of services and products, and the venue itself was a really nice size. I enjoyed the seating outside with the fans. First time back in years and Armadillo did not disappoint. Went with a few friends for a birthday celebration and all of us had a good time. Food was amazing and the drinks delicious. For dinner my husband and I ordered the table guacamole, fish tacos and empanadas. The tacos were too spicy for me so I did not enjoy them because I do not like spicy food. The guacamole was amazing. Make sure you ordered bacon with your guacamole. The chicken empanadas were also good. My favorite drink from the menu was the Feisty Sandia (I love sandia). It was perfect and very refreshing. Make sure you try it next time you go. Service was amazing! We were a big group and everything came out good, in time and the waitress did not make any mistakes. She did an amazing job. We dropped by the Armadillo recently. Years ago, when I first arrived in Houston, I remember stopping here on my first day and being immediately immersed in all things Texas. 12 years later, it was a bit different. I was first immersed in a pointless mandatory $6 valet parking arrangement. During the meal, the restaurant was sold out of biscuits and sold out of cobbler. The food itself - burgers and chicken tenders - was fine, but regrettably unmemorable. I got the feeling that the restaurant was focused on their live music endeavor and was somewhat phoning in the restaurant effort. Elements of the Armadillo strike me as a more budget-friendly version of Wild Oats. It would be nice to see a fresh menu and approach to do just that. read more

Second review for armadillo. I love it here the red fish is consistently delicious, out of 10 times I've been here it's always tasted the same which is awesome. The only complaint is the service is SO SLOW. Usually at the bar the service is really quick but this time the server was SO SLOW and honestly kind of rude. The other wait staff were so nice and considerate but our waitress was really not great. We stay loyal to this place to support local businesses but the service needs to be better. Also valet only which is annoying because the parking lot is literally 4 steps from the restaurant. read more

Perfect place to start our weekend in downtown Houston. Burgers were great and the Mac and Cheese was some of the best.

Yes... we were in town for the Seahawk vs Houston game and yes... we won! Get over it :) We actually heard this is where the designated Hawk bar was tonight for some pre-game shenanigans... and what a great place it was! We had a half section of the outdoor covered area, and we had a blast with food, friends, and drinks! Our wait staff was phenomenal with keeping up on our orders and they allowed us to celebrate football the way we do... in a large pack! Had a variety of drinks from mules to margaritas to some whiskey shots. For the first time ever, had me the Green Spot Irish Whiskey, and man o man was it ever smooth! I'm a Jameson Black kind of guy, but this certainly was a treat. Apparently, not many places carry this, so just another reason to stop by and enjoy the atmosphere. We ordered the Shrimp Cerviche and dayuuuum! It was a perfect compliment to the house chips provided! Then we ordered some chicken Taquitos... and yes... a tasty treat they were! Did I forget to mention it was my birthday? Yeah... I have amazing friends and wife! Many shots were bought with many conversations... and that's what it's all about! Went here for my birthday dinner and was happily impressed. The appetizers were amazing, we shared several including the guacamole, chicken skewers, chicken taquitos and ceviche. All were great. The food was the star of the show and I will be coming back for that chicken dish!! The ambiance was adorable decorated with lots of country items and felt very rustic but clean. Ended up here on a whim actually shortly before they closed. Just enough space to be separated from other folks dining in. It's like you walked right into a what I imagine a western would be like. Chairs at the bar are cute! We sat at a table near the stage. Unfortunately, no one was on tonight. Our server was fairly new but she did a good job recommending options she'd eaten there. I ordered a chicken sandwich. My friend got the burger which were both pretty good. my old fashion was good but not great. No complaints about the frozen house margarita! The butter on the rolls is superb. Not pictured is dessert which we got to go. I can tell you the peach cobbler was great. It's extra for ice cream tho. Met a friend here for lunch while visiting Houston at their suggestion. Very large place that can accomodate lots of people. Great outside space, perfect for relaxing and chatting in the January sun...probably not so much in July. We all had the burger and fries and it was good, not the best, but not the worst I've had. We also had the chicken skewers and deviled eggs and they were great, especially the skewers. Overall, we had a great relaxing time and would return again to enjoy the outside space. read more

Five foodies walked into a bar/restaurant.....and enjoyed some amazing grub and service by Ray. We like to try each others stuff and all of it rated 5 stars. The grand old fashion chicken tenders were crisp on the outside and tender on the inside. The taquitos dorados were very tasty. The bacon cheddar grits were delectable. A glass of sauvignon wine was enjoyed, a frozen margarita was consumed with gusto by me and my wife, our son enjoyed an old fashioned, one lemonade was sipped. The yardbird was a hit. Fried okra was everybody's fave. Grilled chicken skewers were very good. A couple orders of fried pork skins and cantina queso were annihilated. Four butter biscuits were fought over. One of my favorite joints in town. Everything was perfect. The Damn Goode Burger, Creole seasoned fries, cold drinks, the chicken tender sandwich, chips and queso were all perfection. Great service, music, fun place, cool stuff to look at. We had one hell of a good time. Can't wait to go back. Pro tip: they have started a fried chicken and comfort food to go curbside. Guys, there's a giant armadillo at the front of the restaurant. If that's not a recipe for success, I really don't know what is. The atmosphere here is chilled and laid back. The decor around the restaurant is scattered - with some rather large cow hide hanging from the ceiling, mixed with your occasion rattlesnake flattened out and framed on the side wall and a seemingly misplaced grand piano in the corner that probably is used for entertainment at least one night out of the week. We came with a party of around 12 on Friday night at 7, with reservations made the day of. Not knowing what to expect, I asked my friend who chose the restaurant what her favorite dish was and she said "chicken fried chicken." Unfortunately, they don't serve that here anymore (the previous chef has left), BUT... The. Food. Is. Amazing. Appetizers: - Guac: I hate paying for guac, because I can make it at home by myself for a small fraction of the cost (Small fraction is relative to which part of avocado season it is, of course.) But y'all, I was either super hungry (I was) and/or this guac was freaking delicious. And the salsa was addicting too. Everything tasted so fresh. - Pork Empanadas: comes with a green sauce and it's incredible. The pork is so moist and flavorful and just a preview of what was to come. The appetizer comes with 3 empanadas to share (or not.) - Bread Basket: there is some type of delicious, wonderful, (best) biscuit in here. I don't know how it's made, what it's made from, and who made it. But I know that it was so good that I may or may not have grabbed more than one... Entrees: - Pork Chop: I found a pork chop better than Perry's. Think succulent, flavorful, juicy, and tender all rolled up into one. My mouth couldn't stop saying wow. I HIGHLY recommend this $26 entree. - Spit Roasted Chicken: the boyf ordered this and we split our entrees and this juicy chicken instantly became a very, very good friend of mine. Nice flavor and huge portion (I think it was half a chicken) for $19. Overall, I will for sure be coming back here. It's a great place to enjoy a date night, celebrate a birthday party, or just indulge in a delicious meal. Very good food! This is the first restaurant I've been to that has REAL mac & cheese. Super creamy and cheesy, just how it should be. We had green chile empanadas for our appetizer. I got the carne asada which was tender and juicy. The corn tortillas it came with were handmade and charred to perfection. I got a side of elote style creamed corn which was sooo good. For dessert I had the chocolate sheet cake topped with blue bell vanilla ice cream. My husband had the tomato chile jam covered pork chop and for dessert he had pecan pie. The service was great! This very cute rustic Tex-Mex with barbecue flavor restaurant. They have live music in some weekends. We had appetizers and wine and everything was good. We had the Taquitos , and the guacamole with all the fixings. They were amazing especially the taquitos. The server was informative and down to earth. Came after a workout for some brunch and loved the food. I had two appetizers. The wedge salad and the chicken taquitos. Both were very good. I like how the taquitos had a bbq chicken taste and the chicken was very juicy and tender. The spicy marg was not on the menu, but I just asked for the house and they added Serrano pepper. Well done by the bartender. Huge covered outdoor patio with screens to watch the games on. Love the outside. I checked out Goode Company Armadillo Palace for a company happy hour on a Friday. Located off of Kirby, they have a large parking lot. Some of the lot is valet only and some is self-parking. After making my way in, I was surprised by how large the property is. They have a spacious patio which is where we hung out. We didn't have a server so I had to go inside to the bar area (Orange Blossom bar) to get a drink. They have happy hour until 6 PM with discounts on beer and Long Island Iced Teas. I can never pass on a LIT and there's has a twist as they make it with Dr. Pepper. If you're looking for something different, they had a nice list of craft cocktails and I tried a couple after happy hour ran out. I also sampled some of their food including their grilled chicken sandwich with fries and their taquitos. This is good food (pun intended). Not surprising as I'm a fan of Goode Co. Seafood. Their taquitos were a little too spicy for my taste but flavorful. The grilled chicken sandwich was also good with the fries being the standout as they had some addictive seasoning! Not sure what it was but keep it coming. On the weekends, they often have country concerts (honky tonk). Not my favorite type of music but live music is always a good time. It's not free so make sure to get tickets if you're looking to attend. They also have an indoor sit down area but I didn't get to check it out. All-in-all, a great spot for some casual drinks. Got to experience this place for the first time to see Jarrod Birmingham last week. Honestly it probably had some of the best COVID protocols that I could imagine for a live concert view. Upon entering they make it clear what they would like for you to do. The tables are nicely spread out so you aren't on top of each other but all had good views of the stage. I really liked it and would be sure to return again considering I felt safe there and the staff were doing a great job. read more

We stuffed ourselves silly, tried every beer on tap, and had our picture taken with a giant armadillo... what else can you ask for in Texas? We had a very large group and were sat and fed in a very reasonable amount of time. The food came out as ordered and I enjoyed my steak, queso, and beer. I recommend Goode Company to anyone shying away from the Ultra hip Rice Village and wanting to take a step into the country. We will be back! read more
