Management take note. Kiarra- worst - rudest (cashier) employee with a condescending BAD attitude . Needed to purchase fluid for my car and found it with no problem after a nice / knowledgable salesperson directed me in the right direction . There were only two kinds on the shelf - one for $2.99 and a more expensive one for $4.49. We chose the more expensive item and as we approached the register we tried out the price check machine and noticed that when we scanned the item- it came up at $4.99. I told her that it will scan at the wrong price and that she should adjust the price- but she said she doesn't make the prices and it is what is. Another guy said it will adjust if you are a member # customer which we are- but of course we all know hat doesn't happen . I've been a customer for over 20 years . Well of course it didn't and when I asked her to adjust the price she said she does not so that. Here's the kick- she rolled her eyes and stopped looking at me - didn't answer me back when I asked her why- and basically told me to take a hike (with her look) Sorry sweetheart - you aren't that special. No one is. I asked her why can't you have someone come over and make a simple register adjustment for the 50 cents- but again- no answer ( she would not talk to me) we needed the car supply and felt bad that there was a line of people, so left over paying . I know it's only .50 cents- but a point needs to be made here . We love Goodman's and will continue to shop here because it's a great store- but management - take note at what kind of an employee you hired here.. Not a smart hire . Goodman never lets me down. It's always worth the drive over the bridge. They'll custom match paint to any color you want, have a terrific range of tools, equipment, cleaning supplies, gardening equipment, plants, etc...pretty much anything you need for any home project. The customer service is great, and I love that the place reminds me of going to the building supply store with my grandfather as a kid. Too bad the one in San Francisco shut down. read more

Stopped by here Wednesday after work to pick up an outlet cover. First, although it was only drizzling, the parking lot was full of puddles inches deep! I mean, they SELL drainage supplies here, why not use them? After waiting 5th in a non-moving checkout line for several minutes, I dumped my purchase and left. I'll buy one at HD next time I'm in San Rafael. With four employees at the registers, why the wait? Well, #1 was waiting for his customer to talk to someone on the phone to decide which item to buy, #2 had a computer problem with a purchase, and #3 & #4 were discussing what to do about #2's issue. NOBODY was checking out. ABSOLUTELY NO CONCERN for the customers standing in line. Typical of this store, reminiscent of Third World experiences. read more

Goodman almost always has what I need. Seems like we're there a couple of times a month, what with house repairs and improvements. Yes it is a maze. Yes staff can be hard to find, hard of hearing, or both. Yet...I go there because they have what I need. They are close, saving me a bunch of time over schlepping up to Home Depot. Had a great experience at Goodman's today. I grew up with the Goodman's in San Francisco and grieved when they closed it! I needed wood to reframe my garden plot so I headed over to Goodman in Mill Valley yesterday (Saturday) and saw the "15% off on Sundays" sign from the freeway. Since the wood was going to cost north of $340 I figured it was worth it to come back today (Sunday). But I went in to see what they had, and Bruno helped me. He was really nice, took the time to show me the lumber, and advised me to get there early on Sunday because afternoons are busy. I got there today and both Bruno and Mr. Paige (the manager of the lumber yard) treated me like royalty. Bruno spent upwards of an hour with me going over the 2x12 redwood boards that I needed. The inventory was pretty picked over - he said contractors come in all the time and turn over all the boards and they'll reject anything that has defects ... so it was tough going to find enough boards to cut to the sizes I needed. He ended up giving me longer boards so we could cut around the splits on the ends. He did all the cuts for free and only charged me for the linear feet I actually took away. Then he let me leave the wood for a few hours while I hit the thrift stores in San Rafael and Novato. When I came back a guy named Armando (or maybe it was Alfredo) ... saw me loading the wood onto the roof of my car, and came over and spent 15 minutes helping me! With the 15% discount and the fair pricing, I was out of there for $288 with some great looking wood. I got the finished wood which was an upgrade from my previous frame, but cost the same. Not treated with anything, but sanded so it has a smoother finish. This is old-style customer service with a smile and not something you can teach - either you're born with the helpful gene or you're not. A good store to have for copying a key, buying a light bulb, just picking up various little items. It's a disorganized hardware store chock full of this and that, all the employees are quirky, sometimes very friendly, often clueless what you're asking for. Here's an example of a typical Goodman's experience: they advertise composting bins outside the store, making it sound like this is the place to choose amongst of a variety of compost bins. I ask about them, the employee seems perplexed, shows me one box of a simple put-it-together-yourself bin that's overpriced, and says that's it. Same experience with several other products. Don't go here if you're in a hurry or in an impatient mood. But I loathe Home Depot, so I will continue to head for Goodman's for the little things and a down home quirky Mill Valley experience. read more

For over a decade Goodman Building Supply has been my favorite place to go for home repair and building materials and for garden supplies for four reasons: product quality, adequate inventory, knowledgeable/helpful staff, and value pricing. It seems that many others in Marin County feel the same because, even on a holiday weekend, the place was packed yesterday. BEWARE: BAIT and SWITCH I bought a screwdriver set that had a price on the shelf of $4.99. When I got to the register it came up at $25.00. After charging my cc, they hand me a form and tell me I must mail in the form to get the $4.99 price listed on the shelf. I spend a couple hours reading and filling out the form for the ACE set and cut out my UPC code and taped it one the form as instructed. I really followed the instructions carefully. I just got an email saying ACE received my form and it is invalid because the UPC code was not included, but I can resend the form and UPC code to still get my rebate. But I cant becauseI already sent them the UPC code! Now Goodmans wont return the item because the packaging was cut up to send the UPC code and I cant get my rebate because ACE claims I never sent it even though I did! BAIT and SWITCH (or simply false advertising and stealing) will only ruin business relationships for life. I will never go back to Goodmans or purchse ACE products after this experience. read more

Great store. I came here for a physics project, and they had everything I needed. Their prices can be high compared to the depot, but they have more of the smaller items. I changed my review from 4 to 5 stars after they started the 'Recession Fighter' 15% off every item every Sunday. read more

The staff here is so helpful. I purchased rod puppets in Bali; they were carved out of wood and needed a stand to, well, stand up. They just had stakes coming out of their forms intended for the puppeteers. Anyway, one man in the lumber yard helped me find the perfect piece of cast away scrap redwood and gave it to me and another man in the hardware store charged me very little to carve it up and then drill a hole in each of the three pieces so I could display the puppets in my office. The total bill ran less than $10. I have never encountered such a high level of service and such a high level of value in Marin. I am an eternally loyal customer. Thank you Goodman. read more

I needed some 12" pavers for a garden project. Home Depot has them for 98 cents each, but is some distance to travel. So I called Goodmans, and they wanted $5.85 each. Martin Bros at Tam Junction wanted $2.75 each. Goodman either has pavers made of gold, or their prices are 100-500% higher than anyone else. High prices, really poor customer service--that's a combination hard to beat. read more

This is a great hardware store with reasonable prices (especially if you go on Sundays right now, there are 15% discounts). Granted, it IS not always easy to find stuff here as the store looks like it has grown organically. Lots of funky rooms off of other rooms. But this just reminds me more of the hardware stores back east. If you can find some of the long term employees, I have always found them extremely helpful. Can they be curmudgeonly? Absolutely! But if you long for a Wal-Mart-esq fake gratitude response from someone that has no idea of the difference between a circuit breaker and a fuse, go to Home Depot. I just wanted to say thank you to Goodman Lumber in Mill Valley on Saturday I was doing some home plumbing and had the water shut off and ran into a snag and I ran to Goodman's because it was close by and the assistant in plumbing took me all through what I needed to do and even cut the pipe for me and explained everything. When I got home I put it all back together and was back in business. This guy really saved my life I wish I had his name he was tall with dark hair and a beard and the nicest guy. I went into Goodman's and was telling Kevin about a bad experience with a contractor who had defrauded me and he mentioned that he does the referrals. Bill was recommended by Goodman's in Mill Valley. I was not aware that Goodman's is paid for referrals fees by the contractors for each referral. I thought they were recommended Bill Fethon because he was a good contractor. Beware of Goodman's referral program. I trusted them and they let me down. Bill and I entered into a contact for time & materials. He continued to tell me how cheap his was and what a deal I was getting. This was no deal... He charged me $45 per hour for his time and $25 and $20 for his workers + I paid his workman's comp. I paid $45 per hour for Bill but, it worked out to more like $300 to $400 an hour or more.. because he was hardly ever here on the job site and continued to bs me that he was working when he wasn't here. He continue to say, I am on the job and even when he's not on the job. He also said I was he only client so I don't know how he was spending his time. Most of the time when he was here he was in his truck and even paid him sleeping in his truck on my $$$'s. I am almost mad at myself for letting him take advantage of me for so many months. Every week he would charge me all these hours and I wondering how he can charge me 8 to 9 1/2 hours a day when he was hardly ever here. He had a couple nice Hispanic guys working for him that did there best and always showed up on time but, weren't supervised. He did not direct them on how to do thing properly. Bill would not account for his time and where he was. There no way that it took 5 hours a day to do copies at kinko's and pick up materials. He found a sucker.. I feel so ripped off.... I am single women and didn't understand what he was doing and not doing until it was too late. Almost everything had to be redone. Every window had to be re-installed, damage to one of my new large windows with a saw and didn't mentioned that he damaged it. I found out when the window was being re-installed that there was damage. Every door frame had to be re-framed. A steel ibeam took weeks to be installed and was not installed straight. I had to have my carpenters fix it. This should have been done in a timely manner. The ibeam cost me over $10,000 to install maybe more... crazy! He had an excuse for everything and made everything out to be more than it was. If I didn't fire him and hire a couple great carpenters my house would have completely failed. I could have ended up with major water damage and everything would have been done wrong. I didn't figure out that things were being built incorrectly until Bill called for the framing inspection, inspector did not pass the inspection and called for the engineer to come out. This was when I figured out the he didn't put the hold downs and sheer in where it was called for on the plans. He also put in terraced retaining walls for landscaping and there's issues with the walls and city is making me correct them. He should have checked with the city before doing work, He's not professional and should have known where the sheer and hold downs should go. Contractors should know how to read plans and know the building codes. This is basic 101 construction... I know a lot more since I started this project. Trial and error... I could go on and on .. there's so much more but, I think this give the public enough info to make their own decision. It cost me thousands and thousands of dollars to fix all the things done wrong. I could have saved so much money by hiring the right person. He took advantage of my inexperience. I have learned from my mistakes... This was a big one. I have learned that when things are done wrong it costs a lot of money to fix them. I found another bad review on Bill and it similar to mine. They had to fix his work also. It on yellow page. It looks like Bill then posted a review on himself saying that this review is so wrong and unfair. FYI.. I will back up that review with the same experience and more!!! I am surprised I have never come to this store living so close. My go to has been the horrifying store in SR. I came in expecting the same poor level of customer service, no employees available, etc and what I found was exactly the opposite. This store is WONDERFUL. I will never go anywhere else. In particular there was one employee named Taylor who helped me; and another person with such grace and professionalism (at the same time.) Ive never seen anything like it at a hardware store. I also had to return and item and forgot my receipt and they made the transaction so easy and pleasant. read more

Simply the best. This is my 1st review, after yet another great experience there, I told myself, I need to return the favor with a yelp rating. All you would want from a hardware store. I come in with problems (things to repair), and always leave with a solution. For the last 5 years that I have used the store, I have NEVER had a bad experience there. Everyone is super friendly, helpful, personable. As they say in french, "ils se plient en 4 pour leurs clients". The customer is king and eventhough it sometimes is more expensive than Home Depot, the price difference is completey worth it for me for the help I get at Goodman's. I mourn the loss of the real local hardware store. Goodman's is not a great alternative. It is not easy to find someone who really knows what they're talking about here and there is a significant grumpy factor in this place (with a few happy exceptions). I live nearby now, so it is convenient, but the customer service is terrible. The employees have been hired for their rude personalities. I have been verbally assaulted by staff and treated like dirt. The owner must be drawn to these types of employees for reasons that are not clear. read more

Doing a lot of DIY jobs on a fixer-uper, I frequent Goodmans a lot (as well as Home Depot, OSH, etc). Service at Goodman is generally good, but like almost any similar store some people know more about some topics then others...so it helps when you get the right person. That said, I have gotten more good advice here then anywhere else, so I will keep coming back. they have a good selection and generally have what I need, including some odd things I am unable to find at larger stores like Home Depot. They also do some great deals, like discount days etc that go a long way when buying a lot, as prices for some items are more then Home Depot or OSH might be. read more

I don't think you can find a store in the bay area that has less customer service. The employees are even more incompetent than the ones at home depot (which is another store I avoid like poison oak)and to even think that the prices are better ,considering value, than rafael lumber or mill valley lumber , is absurd.
