Nice store that winds all around and has just about anything you could be looking for. 15%-20% off every Sunday. I've been here a couple times and stuff can be a bit tricky to locate and on the busy days, finding someone who isn't helping 3 people at once can be a bit tough. They've got lots of staff on...but there are just so many people that love visiting here. My most recent trip involved perusing the garden section in search of an unbreakable pot and some soil to hopefully save the life of my poor aloe plant. I found both in record time. Bonus points for stocking small bags of specialty mixes of soil for just a few dollars. I only have a couple plants, so a big bag is way not necessary, but if it's needed, they've got it. I guess this is my weekend for nostalgia reviews since this is the third review of a business my family has been patronizing since my childhood. Over the years, there have been a number of big box building supply stores open in Marin, but somehow Goodman Building has managed to survive and flourish for 53 years now. I'm guessing part of that has to do with their southern Marin location, but I also suspect that a lot of it has to do with the fact that they seems to have virtually everything tucked in there somewhere and if they don't have it, they are more than willing to get it for you. I'd give them 6 stars if I could! I was there today, and the staff was SO friendly and helpful! A gentleman directed me to the item I needed, and walked me around telling me a lot of information which I had no idea about and it was so great. Then I headed over to the garden area where again they were so helpful, giving me advice on what to plant, where and when, and the prices were GREAT- way better than some local competitors. Also, every person working there directed me onwards the 15 percent off on Sundays discount, which is amazing. Will definitely be back and telling my friends!! read more

I will say Goodman's has almost everything you could possibly want to find in a hardware/building supply store. The trouble is finding it. It's really hard to find something in this place. But honestly... I can get over that pretty easy. It's kind of like a treasure hunt or something. The problem I consistantly experience here is the staff... well... most of the staff. I feel like they are always having a bad day. A lot of frowning, scowling... I don't know - maybe it's the design of the place... bad Feng shui or something. It's funny, actually - the guy who checks your receipt when you leave (kind of like at Costco) always seems to be joking and laughing - but he is one of the only employees able to see the light of day and get some fresh air. Headed here yesterday at 9AM, bank holiday, they are open! That is a plus, a store that is open at reasonable times just when you need. Had my kids with me, staff asked did they want popcorn, friendly service. In fact any time I have walked through the store i have been met by staff that want to assist. Most things you could want for the home and garden are here. Sure the prices are not Lowes or Home Depot, but then you are dealing with a local hardware store. read more

I was in a couple days back and the gal Jenn at customer service was SO rude. She was very put off about helping. More concerned about what the other employees were doing and not concerned about helping me at all. Did as lite as possible to help and was huffing and puffing, seemed angry at everyone and everything. Words of advice to you. Jobs are a dime a dozen, if you hate your job so much, that you don't care how you act ( just realize you are a customer service representative of goodman and you are really bad at it) do everyone a favor and go get another one. This is a typical trait with most of the employee interactions I have had at the customer service counter in this establishment. I understand that Marin customers are the most entitled people on the planet but you have chosen to work in customer service/ retail so, have some pride and do a proper job. Concentrate on the customer in front of you and not on the employees or frustrations around you, keep it to yourself. Customers do not appreciate your annoyance. This place has so much potential but each time I go there I feel like I have just been treated like dirt. I like to keep it local but each time I try this store, it seems like the results are always the same. Maybe I will have to travel to San Rafael for some Hardware, kitchenware, tools, paint, lumber etc. I don't think I or my family will be going back. Good luck! read more

When the Camp Fire threatens MV residents with dangerous levels of toxicity, Goodman is there to help. With N95 masks that they have marked up 500% (not kidding: 500%). They retained a few stars for helpful employees who seemed embarrassed to be selling marked-up emergency supplies. Seems like a community business would be more amenable to helping out people in an emergency. Disappointing. read more

Dispite being less organized having a smaller selection and being more expensive than Home Depot I shopped at this store because I wanted to support a local business. I've been going to Goodman Building Supply Company for years and have not found another hardware store with as many wonderful people who are so friendly and knowledgeable. If I can't find an item I need, they will order it for me and when I have questions about a project, I know I will find one of the staff who will be able to answer it. I do love Goodmans, they are so helpful. They actually go out of their way to be helpful. I have been able to do many projects myself instead of spending $100's of dollars to hire someone to do it. Myron is my favorite..he is polite, knowledgeable and has helped me so many times...Mark is another gem. He helped me with getting redwood lattice cut to the perfect size..it was a pleasure! I had it remove one star because I went there last Sunday (8/18/13) and was waited on by the grumpiest, ill mannered cashier! She was an older woman with blond hair and very grouchy, so unlike all the other folks who work there. I have spent thousands of dollars there, it is my go-to store, then to be waited on by someone who is rude was a shocker...she may have been having a bad day, we are all have em..but when you represent a company other than your own...your bad mood needs to come out outside of your work hours and NOT directed at a loyal customer! Other than that, you would have a 5 star...I will keep coming back for sure, but I will make sure she does not check me out! read more

If you like treasure hunts, then go to this building supply store. It is totally dis-organized, dirty, and staff is usually in a bad mood including the cash register folks. And if you need ceiling tiles, forget it. You have to leave atleast atleast 10 to 15 messages for this guy Horacio or Heracio. He is knowledgeable but never returns call in a timely manner. So if you want some special order supply or need something quick enough, I suggest going somewhere else. read more

I went to get two sconces for a hallway..........went to 4 other local and big box.. Finally thought of Goodmans ! I asked for help as I always do, they reach and find, and explain....helpful service. I let the manager know when someone has gone out of their way, which with me is each visit. I got a pair of outdoor sconces they are now installed inside each one was less than 10 smackarooz. , white tin + simple frosted glass put one up an one down they look great, like I spent 5x as much. Then I got some... soil, a solar flashlight, some switch plates, a set of hooks, eco bulbs This place is OLD SCHOOL pre HD,pre costco, So glad this place remains a staple in the community. When you see trucks of the trades outside you know they are doing it right. Soon I will try the gussied up food trailer on the lot. read more

New lows for low hanging fruit. It is a known fact if you cannot make it at sears, Walmart or as a porto potty poop cleaner, you can work at Goodmans building supply. Today, as the line in the store got longer and longer, there was only one out of a possible 3 checkout stations that seemed to be interested in helping me and the others in line. One person was fiddling with her station, maybe cleaning it ( which i doubt) and the other, in the contractor area, was too busy turning his back to the line to look at the television. 3 minutes elapsed before this clown could be bothered by customers. Oddly enough also, just the wearing of a mask seems also to allow people to be curt and rude. The good news is, I'm retired and this clown will still have a lifetime ahead of him to do the poor job he has mastered. what a douchebag. read more

Ok, Goodman's has just about everything, but their prices are too high. The place is jam packed with merchandise that can be a bit messy at times. Some aisles get blocked and it can be difficult to get around the mess. Having said that, if you need it, Goodman's probably has it when it comes to Home Repair items. read more

I called today to find materials to build a hoop house, and one person said they don't carry PVC that bends. I asked her where I might find this material and she put me on hold to find out. While I was on hold, another woman picked up the phone and asked why I was on hold. I told her someone was helping me learn where to find the material I needed and she said they don't carry it (I explained I understood that...) and I need to "just google" to learn. She said she has worked there 35 years and knows they don't carry it so "I don't know what to tell you". Completely unhelpful and needlessly condescending. Don't buy paint at Goodman's! The lighting is terrible and it seems to be a big deal to open the door. The paint match scanner is defective. There are 3 large lights over the counter that aren't fluorescent that should be turned on to help customers and clerks see the true color after matching. The color I had matched looked like the right color in their poor light, but when I brought it home, it's 3 shades lighter even in a dark corner. On top of that, the man behind the counter, a long-time employee, was less than helpful and very unfriendly borderline rude. As if he doesn't realize how important matching a color is in terms of touch-ups and painting adjacent walls. Adding insult to injury, when I asked about the Ben Moore sale sign posted out front, instead of checking the computer or flyers, the clerk had to call the paint guy all the way over to her desk to tell her if there was a sale. After waiting 5 minutes for him, I gave up in frustration and paid full price - 40 bucks for a gallon of paint?! AND I saw no gloves on their personnel! I intend to lodge my complaint with management. read more

They were a saving grace for N95 and N100 masks during this recent fire and resulting smoky environment in Marin. While we expected them to sell out fast they reordered quickly, often and even sourced these masks and Air purifiers from other places like Amazon and out of state companies. I stood with Victorio, the hardware department manager, as he tracked down soft seal masks from an out of state company and brought them in for my kids school in a large quantity. I know they probably made a bunch of profit off these masks but expediting fast shipments from out of state couldn't have been cheap so maybe they just wanted to make sure that their customers were able to fight off this horrible smoke and not just make a buck? While i try to understand this store and how it still exists, I am reminded that they are conveniently located, have a good return policy and most people want to help. Very reminiscent of the olden day hardware stores that have dust on the products and impulse items everywhere. I run into certain people that seem as though they are underpaid and do not care. That is really not my problem. Stores like that probably do not pay top dollar for help. They have a decent amount of items, sometimes there are high quality alternatives to the made in china stuff you see in Ace hardware stores. All in all i am happy they are where they are and offer just about anything i need for my small minor repairs. How is it possible this Store survives in Marin county? The selection is good and location is good too, which is why the 1 star rating. Over the past five years, I've been to the store over 20 times. The one consistent aspect of the store, besides the messy and disorganized merchandise, is the incredibly poor customer service. Once again this past week when walking into the store, the people who work there seemed to do everything they could not to acknowledge your existence. When you ask someone for help, at best they engage, leaving you with a sense of annoying them and interrupting their day. The cashier section is clearly structured to make it easier for the staff, by having two different lines and only certain cashiers can help with credit/cash transactions, or store credit or returns. Simply plan on spending some time in line waiting to checkout while you watch cashiers standing around not helping customers. It is absolutely ridiculous, and that is being kind. It is actually much easier, and eliminates frustration, to drive to the new mini Target in Marin City or go to Home Depot in San Rafael. Perhaps one day the family will sell land or business as it can only get better. Skip Goodman's and buy somewhere else if online doesn't work. You'll add years to your life! read more

I don't know how to describe shopping at this place. Every employee there must follow the others in a downward spiral of ineptitude and rudeness. Iasked a guy for help finding some tape. He literally turned and walked away muttering that he was on break. I looked for another to help and finally found a guy who sighed and pointed me to an aisle. Every employee I have seen is a shirker, whiner and can care less about customers. Who do they think is paying them? Then to cap it off a young man was sitting at the exit door. He said "Yo!". I stopped thnking maybe he was checking receipts. But no.. He said (quote) "wanna buy some windows" pointing at a little sample window. I said no, I rent. I walked out and went back saying and don't Yo me and block my exit. I felt harrassed. He got up and went outside making like he was going to punch me. That would have been entertaining since I was in the Army and have a black belt in karate... but he wimped out and returned to his little stool. Whoever owns this joke... fire everybody and torch the place (or viceversa). This place needs to die. Tear it down and plant grass. read more

I don't think I will ever return to this place. Some of the clerks are mean and completely unhelpful. I've had keys made there and each time, they don't work. I've stopped getting keys from Goodman's. The last time I was at the store the clerk who "helped" me was completely rude. I work for a government agency and used my tax exempt credit card. I've used the card there before but this time the clerk insisted that I provide her with an account number. I explained that I didn't want the purchase put on the account because the bill wouldn't come to me...I'm not on the account. She told me I should get my name added to the account (which isn't an easy thing in a large government agency and it was unnecessary). Then she asked me for names of other people who might be on the account. I gave her a bunch of names and none of them worked. Then she tried to find the account based on the account name. She kept confusing the account name with other places in the area. I asked her why she couldn't just run the card like they've done in the past and she insisted that I give her an account number. I was frustrated and tired. She became extremely belligerent and said out loud, "I don't want to deal with this anymore." At that point, I left my items on the counter and left the store. I felt embarrassed and humiliated as if I'd done something wrong. You guys need to train your clerks in good customer service. If I treated anyone this way, I'd lose my job. I've worked in retail as well as having waitressed in restaurants for nearly 15 years. I know it can be difficult at times when you are dealing with the public all day, but your clerks shouldn't take out their frustrations on good customers. This isn't the first time this has happened to me where a Goodman's clerk has been rude to me. Many of them behave as if I should be taking care of them and often times act as if it is an imposition to help the customers. This particular clerk was especially difficult. I needed advice on generators. A very friendly young guy showed me where to find them and told me he had to ask for help, since he does not know much about generators. He asked another sales person, who told him: Ask Yuri. So he called Yuri and told him I was waiting for him by the generators. After a while, the friendly guy checked on me and noticed I was still waiting. So he called Yuri again, on speaker phone. This time Yuri says to him: Just read to her what is written on the boxes! Thank you, Yuri, that was the most stupid advice ever. I am not illiterate. I needed advice so I could buy the right generator for my house. read more

Terrible store. It's the closest hardware store to where I live, so I go to Goodman because I want to support a local business. The entire service experience is lacking. For a small store, you end up spending more time/money/emotional resources looking for the item, than you would at Home Depot. The store layout is out of control - so you are reduced to asking for help. Help is usually nowhere to be found. When you do find help, if you're lucky, you'll find someone kind and helpful. More often than not, you'll get the most disinterested employee that will reluctantly help you out. When you get to the shelf, you'll realize that the thing you're looking for is out of stock, half falling out of the package, and usually 1.5x more expensive than if you were shopping elsewhere. Ok fine, you decide to support the local business, so you pick up the product. You make your way up to the cashier, and you wait in line, which does not move. When you get to the cashier, they are yet again extremely disinterested. Sometimes when the SKU is missing, they'll have to call for help, only for help to show up minutes later. You'll have to wait for customer service to walk back to the aisle to find the product with the missing SKU. Lastly, if you're an ace member, god forbid that you use a coupon - you'll end up more confused than if you didn't. Your final bill is usually different from what you expected but because it has taken so long, you just leave, totally disgusted. Oh, and their parking lot is terrible. I'm now trying to avoid this store as much as I can, and picking up my items online or at Home Depot. read more

As much as like to patronize local stores, it's the fact there is dearth of hardware stores in southern Marin these days and wretched traffic to deal with elsewhere that keeps me coming back. This store is a real Jeykyl and Hyde dichotomy. It probably has what you want, but sometimes finding it in this Winchester mystery house can be a chore. Sometimes you'll stumble on a great employee who is helpful and knowledgeable. Then again, it's more often like my experience yesterday: a surly, unhelpful cashier with a major 'tude about making a return. His name rhymes with bark, but he ain't no good dog.
