Came here one night to grab drinks with some friends for a nice, intimate, relaxing evening. Really liked the vibe. It's a cocktail den on the corner of 1st Avenue and St Marks, and there's a genuinely sweet story behind the name: the owner named it after his grandfather Sonny, remembering how his grandmother used to call up the stairs to say goodnight to him while he worked late shifts behind the family bar downstairs. That kind of warmth comes through in the room itself, exposed brick, family photos on the walls, a reclaimed wood bar. It's definitely a date spot or a double date spot. Quiet conversations, real connections, at least as far as the space allows for that on a busy East Village night. Drinks were good, service was good too. They've also got a solid raw bar and oyster program I didn't get to properly dig into. Still a favorite of mine. The drinks are great, and again, the bartenders will make you anything you want. Kim is one of my favorite bartenders, though they are all super cool and chill and kind. And best of all, their kitchen is open late. I got into New York after midnight this last time and hadn't eaten all day. I tried a couple regular places and the kitchen in each place was closed. From the moment I approached Good Night Sonny sitting on the corner of 1st Avenue and East 8th Street, I knew that it would be a charming place. Of note, the music was quite loud and I had to speak above it which was frustrating at times. We were able to grab a table and as I admired the cute atmosphere complete with ceramic floor tiling, we looked over the menu for food and drink options. Unfortunately, we missed out on the HH specials--ending at 7 p.m. As far as drinks, I began with the Aperol Spritz (perfect on a hot evening and possibly my go to summer time drink) and ended with a crisp Rose. Their menu is diverse with some carefully crafted and unique cocktails. As far as food, since I had eaten, we shared a small plate: Boquerones Tartine which was marinated white anchovies on toasted pumpernickel, crème fraiche, lemon zest & pickled onion, This was SO delicious and a perfect snack to accompany our drinks. I'm eager to return to try their HH oysters or other items on the menu. In addition, I want to experience their brunch. I really like Good Night Sonny and plan on returning soon.
