A friend drove us to Goomba's Pizza. We missed lunch. It was already so late in the day that the pizza served as a midday snack to hold us over until dinner. Goomba's has a nice counter that's covered with a variety of pizzas-by-the-slice. I picked a slice of bbq chicken. I hadn't had that in years. I enjoyed it. The place is clean. It's inviting. The best part was the friendly young man behind the counter who gave us a warm greeting as we walked in. He explained about the pizzas and gave me some very good blue cheese dressing to sample. The second best thing was the awesome crust on the pizza. Just the right thickness and crunchiness. A great slice of pizza is enjoyable at any age. I've had some very good pizza over the years. FIRST of all, the main reason anyone would go is if they searched for or wanted wood fired pizza, everything the menu, the delivery cars even the menu on the electronic board inside says woodfired pizza IT IS NOT wood-fired pizza ,made in a basic pizza oven. There is a woodfired pizza oven there but it is not in use. I'm not sure if these are new owners just very disingenuous and the pizza was mediocre at best. we ordered two medium pizzas one with olives and onions another with meatball and pepperoni,very skimpy on the toppings pretty much an embarrassment. my son ordered a chicken Parm sub. He said the bread tasted like it was microwaved and then baked was not fresh bread for sure. I always give a place a second chance we will try this one day. I was here a while back and the pizza slices I had were pretty good. However, the place was purchased in January and now under new management/ownership, mom and pop. I like the name Goomba's since it reminds me of playing Super Mario Bros as a kid back in the day. It's time for a Yelp! The atmosphere inside is pretty comfortable with dim lighting and new furnishings (self serve seating) in the casual dining area. It's order at the counter here. The walls have old B/W pictures including some Marilyn Monroe. There's also a few Red Sox decorations near the counter, which is definitely a plus in my book, especially since this area is Yankees country. The owner David is a Red Sox fan. They offer traditional thin crust and specialty pizza from a real wood fired brick oven, no smoking mirrors here like at many other pizza places I've been to which falsely claim to have brick oven pizza. Pizza is also available by the slice (cheese and meat toppings). Besides pizza, other offerings include subs, wraps, salads, soups, appetizers, and pasta dinners. 7-Up and RC Cola products available from the cooler. Specials are also offered here including pasta & meatballs or sausage on Wednesdays and jumbo fish fry on Fridays. Since I've been eating pizza for the past week straight, I decided on the Buffalo Chicken Wrap ($5.95 plus tax), which included fries and a small salad of the day. This is a very good deal for the money since most other places I've been to offer similar wraps a la carte and the price is usually higher ($7-$8). The food was ready in under 10 minutes. This Wrap was excellent, which had tender breaded chicken in a spicy buffalo sauce with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, and a creamy bleu cheese dressing wrapped in a flour tortilla. The crispy battered fries were fried golden to perfection and had a slight sweet taste and a good texture. The small salad was a shell pasta salad with Italian dressing. Overall, the buffalo chicken wrap and battered fries were very enjoyable and priced right. We ordered delivery while visiting my in-laws. It was a mediocre experience overall. Delivery took a LONG time. Once it arrived, a meal was missing. One of the bags had a salad dressing spill all over. The delivery person had some sort of discussion/argument about the missing meal over the phone with the restaurant. He also asked if we wanted to drive back ourselves to get the missing item or if we wanted it delivered (ummmm). On top of that, there were some issues with the food. One: We ordered garlic knots with cheese. They also came sprinkled with sausage. That would have been nice to know ahead of time as I do not eat pork and we wouldn't have ordered them. Two: Fries were soggy. I know fries are hard to do via delivery, but our local pizza place actually manages it, so it is possible. Three: All of the food was lukewarm at best. If you're offering delivery, you need a way to keep the food at an adequate temp until it reaches its desitination. Four: I had a "grande chicken melt." There was nada grande about it. It was a very, very thin chicken breast without flavor. I felt like I was mostly eating bread and onion. Overall, it was a major disappointment. When the original owner "Robin" who grew up in the capital district owned this place, she did an awesome job of keeping up on the quality of food here. Ever since the new owners have taken over, the food is just like anywhere else. I am not sure if it is because they are not from around here and have a different way of cooking, but the pizza is shit. I would say that Goombas is the best pizza place in the Schodack area. I usually buy their sought to make my own at home, but I have had their pizzas. I like the thin crunchy crust and the sauce. The price varied depending on who answered the phone. Food seems to Always take an hour now and calzone is 9 out 10 times burnt and comes cold. I used to love the Tiramisu but now it's a generic freezer type cake. I ordered pasta tonight, typically it's enough to feed me (122lbs my four year old and have enough for one lunch the next day) tonight my 4 year old who's 33 pounds ate this alone and asked for something else bc he was still hungry. When I leave Vegas and visit my mom in Nassau (upstate NY) the amount of restaurants I'm accustomed to goes from about 1200 in a 10 mile radius to about 5. So where do I eat? Well, I just this past year stumbled upon Goomba's via word of mouth. Outstanding pizza here and I know pizza very well (grandpa and both uncles operated multiple pizza shops around the capital district). Now to reflect on the pizza...every aspect of this slice of pizza is as close to perfection as I've ever had. The dough is light, airy, a little sweet, but not too sweet. Perfect. The sauce goes perfect with the dough because the slight zing of the sauce contrasts perfect with the subtle sweetness of the dough and the dough isn't thick so you get a lot of that excellent sauce and cheese in your bite. The cheese melts perfectly because I think they use a mix of skim mozzarella and whole mozzarella blended together to get that perfect melt. If you opt to take out a full pie it's just as good the next day. ...and ignore the comment by the reviewer below who said to stay away from the ready made slices, 90% of the time, that's what I order and every time they just pop it in the wood-fired oven and it comes out hot and fresh like it was just made...all pizza joints that offer slices handle it this way and it gives you a chance to sample a variety...and to not keep the customer waiting 15 minutes for a slice. How else is a restaurant supposed to offer slices? Hint: Grab a slice of buffalo chicken if you see it up there. Another outstanding piece of work. On top of the great pizza, the service is top notch. Not only are the employees friendly, but the owner always makes it a point to ask how my mom is doing whenever she's at the counter and I come in for a couple slices to go. The place doesn't look like much from the outside (or for that matter, from the inside), but the pizza is hands-down the best in a 20 mile radius, at least. Their pizza, made in a wood-fired oven, comes out near-perfect. The sauce is excellent and full of flavor, and distinctive. Their meat lover's pizza is a must-try. So are their wood-fired chicken wings. I haven't had anything like it anywhere else. It's partially deep-ffried and then finished off in the oven, to give it a nice flavor and texture. Unlike the usual buffalo wings, it's not drowned in sauce. Fantastic. My wife ordered a lasagna, and was skeptical--most pizzerias in these parts just don't do a very good job of anything beyond pizza (and even that's questionable). To my surprise, it was also very good! Served with generous amount of their great sauce. If I didn't like their pizza so much, I might get adventurous and try the other dishes. All this and at very affordable prices. I'm hooked.
