As a follow up on my first review which was only 1 Star, I am writing this one. The owner read my review and called me, directly. He apologized, profusely, and asked for the details of what happened, so, he could make appropriate improvements. He also, immediately, asked if I would return for a complimentary service from him to make up for my poor experience. He made a tremendous effort to get in touch with me despite the phone tag we had to play due to my work schedule. I greatly appreciate the owners effort, response and professionalism. I would recommend you book an appt with him or one of the other senior stylists rather than an apprentice. He is a hardworker with a heart that respects his customers. I came to this salon a few weeks ago for balayage, and Lexi was my stylist. She did SUCH a terrific job with it... looked just like the photos I showed her for what I had in mind. My hair is naturally medium brown, and Lexi added beautiful, natural-looking balayage highlights that really lightened up my hair nicely for the summer. It was also pretty reasonably priced, as compared to the prices I had seen listed on other salon's websites. Another reason I'm giving this salon 5 stars is the customer service. When I arrived for my appointment, Lexi was finishing up another client's hair, so I had to wait 20 min or so before I was taken care of. I didn't really mind and read a few magazines while waiting. But several members of the staff apologized to me and explained that they encourage their stylists to always do a thorough job and not rush things, and that the client before me happened to have a lot of hair to get cut off so that's why it took longer than expected. Then, at checkout, I was given complimentary shampoo and conditioner for waiting. I really appreciated that kind of customer service, and I will definitely be returning to Goran Coban for styling by Lexi in the future! read more

Margaret gave me a great haircut and also colored my hair! She managed to take my hair from a super dark brown to really well blended blonde highlights while still maintaining the integrity of my hair (even though it's thin). I gave the salon a second chance because I heard great things about Liz - and I'm glad I did because she's a master hair artist. It's challenging to accomplish a multi-dimensional color on already treated hair but she did! I followed James here, because he FINALLY came back to Chicago and landed in this awesome salon. I was a little nervous that it'd be upscale (read: snooty) and overpriced but it SO WASN'T. everybody was super-friendly and down to earth. I love it! That said, I became a James addict when he was at a salon near my house and went through PHYSICAL WITHDRAWAL when he just pulled up stakes and moved to Michigan. Jerk! Anyway, I lived without him for a couple years and he's finally back in town. My head could not be happier! Not only is James a fantastic stylist and colorist, he's a genius at assessing your coloring, face shape and lifestyle (like my aversion to blow-drying) to customize your look and execute it flawlessly. I recently tried Goran Coban for the first time. I was surprised to find this very chic, beautiful, salon heaven in my neighborhood. The tone of the salon sets it apart from others in the area. It has a modern, sophisticated, and spa-like atmosphere. I found this refreshingly soothing after a busy day at work. They use a unique product line I have not seen in other salons, Oribe. The Foundation Mist I took home simplified my beauty routine. It has a delightfully light herbal scent and is now a staple in my beauty cabinet. Mediocre at best. Beautiful space---but empty. Stylist was nice enough. After spending $220+ "we should have just foiled it" = color correction after I moved for $300. My balayage was OK. None of the pieces went anywhere near the root, and with my blondness I actually needed some to blend. Don't understand the rage. It's ok, pricey, nice location/inner design, nice and knowledgable staff, but not really worth the end result for my investment. Even my stylist was disappointed. It would have been nice that since we both felt that way, I could have gotten a service to at least fix some of it. I guess when you tell people that you're moving, they won't really care what you get. read more

The worst part of leaving Chicago (besides leaving my friends and such a fab city)? Not being able to see Lonny regularly for cut and color. Lonny is an absolute genius with any length of hair, including the hideous in-between lengths where one has no idea what to do, and you're left just saying "Fix it!". Lonny is more than a fixer. He has great instincts for what looks good with the shape of my face, and what color looks best on my head. And he's lovely. Seriously lovely and funny. I have been to every "hot" salon in Chicago, and blown stupid amounts of money on the holy grail of hair salons. I finally found it when I found Lonny and Goran Coban. Goran's salon is a beautiful, serene space where I can actually relax and Lonny is someone who was actually nice to see after a crap day of work. The other people that work at the salon are wonderful too. When you're tired of Maxine, Buzz, or other salons with big names, big prices and big attitudes, go see Lonny at Goran Coban. read more

(I have to add to my review because I really don't think my last review does this place justice) This is THE BEST salon. Hands down. I'm extremely picky when it comes to my hair. I change it all the time yet I am very particular. While I've gone to many salons, I never found 'the' salon that has kept me coming back. I used to work at a salon AND I used to be a hair model. Still I never found anyone who met my standards. Then on one fateful day I trusted the good people of Yelp and decided to check out Goran Coban Salon. There I met Nicole, and the rest is history. I will never go to another salon. Nicole & everyone at Goran Coban have completely earned my trust. I came in with crazy blonde and blue hair and then Nicole took it to a beautiful strawberry blonde, then a deep red, and now a cool brunette with highlights and bangs. Nicole is able to meet my crazy demands and changing mood when it comes to my hair. Considering all of the processes that my locks have been through, she still manages to do it all without even the slightest sign of damage. Not only is the end result fantastic, but the process is great too. The ambiance at the salon is so chic and relaxing. They've got complimentary drinks (tea, coffee, wine), too! This isn't one of those snobby, stuffy, sterile salons. Nope, everyone here is super friendly and inviting. Margaret and I chatted about my hair the first day and she transformed it amazingly the next day (did not mention how she offered to do it in the same day) due to my time shortage I came in the next day and she got started right away, I got a partial balayage and 5 inches off of my hair cut off, since I have very long virgin hair she did very well with it. She added lovely layers and brought it to life. She was so kind and was just an amazing person to talk to. I enjoyed every moment of it. She did each and step with lots of care and diligence. Repost - as I had posted in the wrong Goran Coban location. Lonnie is at the Hubbard St Salon I was so glad to find Lonnie here. I had been searching for a new stylist after many years with the same style. Every place I tried I would ask them what they think would look good for me and no one ever changed the style.... just trim it up. I found Lonnie 2 months ago. He was at another salon then but he immediately told me what would look good on me. I have thin, fine ashy blonde hair and he has made it bouncy and look much fuller. I panicked when I called his previous salon and found out he wasn't there, but found he is now at Goran Coban on Hubbard St. YAY!! This time I trusted him for cut AND color and again - his expertise was spot on. Gold tones for the winter to bring out my color. I have gotten so many compliments on my hair since he first cut it. I highly recommend Lonnie - he listens to you and actually offers his expert opinion! As for the salon - it is really cute.... a bit hard to find on Hubbard (right past Dos Diablos but blink and you'll miss it). Love the cleanliness and openness of the place. read more

I am always so happy with my hair when I leave! Kayla is the absolute best and I've referred her to several of my friends!! My mom is a hairstylist and is the only person that has ever done my hair for the last 24 years but once we moved downtown I needed to find a salon. It's always difficult to find a new go-to, but I'm so glad I chose Goran Coban. I've gotten several different services: full head bleach blonde, low lights, bayalage, trim, heavy cut.. and Kayla's killed it everytime. The blow out is the icing on the cake. I'd choose going to Kayla for a blow out over a boutique blow out salon. I'm always tempted to sleep standing up the night of my appointment so my hairstyle lasts! My boyfriend goes to Lexi and she also does a great job! I live closer to the River North location so I typically walk there from work, but the Lincoln Park location is directly off the Diversey stop so it couldn't be easier to get to either. One downside of Goran Coban is that I never seem to get anyone on the phone when I call to make an appointment. I'm always leaving voicemails and sometimes I don't get a call back for a few days, which is frustrating. I wish they'd have someone man the phones more often. I also wish this salon offered classes - like learning how to do better blow outs yourself, etc. I'd still come here to see Kayla regularly but definitely need to learn how to keep my gorgeous locks after I leave the salon. I've been going to Goran Coban for the past year and half or so, and I've had solid experiences each time. I go to Jill for haircuts (don't do color at the moment), and she does fabulous work. Always leave the salon feeling wonderful. When the owner is there during my appointments, he always greets me and says 'goodbye' and 'thank you'. In addition, one time when I was there for an appointment last spring, it was someone's birthday, and they offered me a piece of chocolate cake--what more could you ask for :) The salon spaces--both the Lakeview and River North locations--feel lofty, light, and airy. The River North location is probably my favorite, though. The price is right, and the service is consistently professional and friendly. Would recommend Goran Coban Salon to anyone looking for a great hair experience. read more

Called here at 9:05am on a Thursday to make a lunchtime nail appointment (they're posted open time is 9am) - no answer. Called back at 10:30, still no answer. Left a message. Got a call back at 11:45 telling me to come in at 12:45 - no problem, I'm flexible. Rushed to get there at 12:45 as I hate being late but apparently they don't mind being late. I walked out at 1:00 as the one manicurist was still polishing the nails of the customer before me. Maybe I was being a little harsh but waiting over 15 minutes for an appointment that should only take about 30 was too much for me. Horrible first impression!!!! read more

I was referred to her by a friend and now I have been going to her for 7 years! I love the fact that she listens to exactly what you want. She also makes sure to preserve the health of your hair. I had a very good experience at Goran Coban. It was my first time trying this salon, and I was referred to Jill, who turned out to be awesome. I used to get pretty much the same color and trim every time I went to my old salon. No one ever noticed or complimented me afterwards. But when I met Jill, I told her I would leave it up to her what she thought would look best. She asked me a few questions then went to work. The finished product was modern, stylish, and different from what I would have ever picked out for myself. She also did a wonderful up-do for me for a fundraiser cocktail party I attended. Bottom line is I got SO many compliments at work, at the fundraiser, on Facebook, etc. I am so happy to have found such a talented stylist and a nice salon that isn't so terribly expensive or snobby. read more

After moving to Chicago from NYC, I was really worried I wouldn't be able to find someone to do my Balayage that I liked as much as my person there. After visiting another local salon and having the OWNER do my hair terribly, I had a friend recommend Goran Coban. I've now gone twice to Nicole and she is AWESOME!! I love this salon and have been going there for years despite not even living in Chicago. Especially I love Katarina who does my hair every time I go! She is extremely experienced and amazing at what she is doing and she has such a wonderful personality! My hair can get very tangled when wet but she is always very patient and careful when combing my hair and I really appreciate it. I had to go to the other Goran site, on Diversey, to see Jill-I was so tired of the dark hair that was given to me by Mixed Co., I was told it wasn't going to be that dark and it looked nearly black! So Feb, March, April, May, June...I waited for any fading that would take place, I gave up and made an appt with Jill to see if she could help- I have learned that when going lighter from dark, that it takes time, it is a gradual process-So I really didn't have my hopes up- I brought a picture and showed her 2 Pinterest pictures, but very realistic pictures-I was expecting her to tell me it wasn't possible, but she never did-As well she seemed confident and started in-I asked her if she could do the new trend of ecaille technique, a.k.a "tortoiseshell hair" (multidimensional tones of golden, caramel, honey, chocolate) She said she was aware of it and started in-She took her time and painted many pieces on- Then after it processed she took me to the sink and applied a toner, but this toner did not stink, nor burn, it smelled good-She worked that stuff in, I mean really massaged every inch of my scalp with it, and the whole time was really inspecting the color-She didn't have some assistant do it and then when the bell went off go get the person that put the color in your hair, Jill was doing this-It was her creation and she was managing ever facet of the process- When I sat down to get blow dried I couldn't see any color, normally I see some faint line or bright piece-But I was like "just wait until it's dry...you aren't expecting that much" After it was dried I was in shock-I had the most realistic highlights I have EVER received-It seriously looks like I was on an island for a month, and have a variance of sun-kissed caramel, honey tones-And this was with super dark hair, first round! I can't wait to see what happens with my August appointment! I am from Florida, so growing up I had the best highlights ever being being I was at the beach and always swimming in the ocean-I have tried for years since I moved up here to get that same effect, no one has given it to me-I have been to many salons, Mixed Co, Maxine, Red 7, Fuga, Robert Jeffery, Salon Buzz, Red Door Salon, just to name a few-None could produce what Jill has for me- And it doesn't end there...she also cuts my hair-She originally fixed a cut from Mixed Co. back in February for me and told me my hair was way too dark and she could help me-She wasn't lying! Again, another great cut-I just really appreciate a salon having the person who did my color cut my hair-I think that's how it always should be- Just top notch salon, I am so mad at myself for not finding her sooner- This morning when I woke up, in my zombie state, I turned on the light in the bathroom, looked in the mirror and smiled-That hasn't happened after I get my hair done the next day, I always see issues and say "well it will grow out" NOT THIS TIME! After three years of bouncing around between plenty of reputable, high-end salons in Chicago, I FINALLY found a stylist and salon I love. I had my second visit with Adam, and his reputation as the "blonde whisperer" is not an exaggeration. I saw him for a balyage. With other places I've felt like the stylist just saw another head of blonde to paint without really thinking it through. But Adam's approach is completely customized and strategic. He takes his time looking at your hair before you even get started, talks to you about what you're looking for, and then provides his recommendations on what will work for YOU. I realize this sounds like what every stylist does, but trust me, his expertise is on another level. I mean, he does for hair what contouring does for faces. I love that he doesn't rush. The salon in general doesn't feel like a place where they're just trying to get through as many clients as possible (which I've experienced at other places). Adam took his time to make sure it was perfect because he genuinely cares about the work he puts out there. He's an artist. I've never had more compliments on my hair before I started seeing Adam, and actually had a close friend switch salons as a result (she saw someone else at Goran Coban, but was SO happy with her hair as well).
