I decided to visit Hawthorne Asylum, and it definitely lived up to the hype. The atmosphere reminded me of a night market, except with permanent food carts. It has a fun, lively vibe, and there are so many different food options that there's something for everyone. It's a great place to come with friends or family since everyone can choose something different. There's also a bar in the middle of the food cart pod. We didn't get a chance to try it because we had already ordered boba tea from another vendor, but it looked like a great place to relax and enjoy a drink. I'll definitely check it out the next time I'm back. Overall, Hawthorne Asylum is a fun spot with a great atmosphere and an excellent variety of food. It's well worth a visit if you're exploring Portland.

They had the World Cup game playing too so this was the perfect spot to hang out. They also had bathrooms which is a bonus! I appreciated that the vendors used beepers too so you could still wander off and order other things while you wait.

If you're a food vendor and your notes specify to bring up any issues with the waiter, and you do, and then you don't do anything at all, then you deserve 1 star. Sorry, no excuses. No making it right after the fact. Just no! The food was something less than stellar. The Margherita Pizza was just a cheese pizza with some tomatoes and pesto and looked nothing like some of the other delicious pizzas on the Furioso page (go ahead and compare). The charcuterie board only had 2 cheeses (when it should have had 3) and was pitiful and bare looking. It didn't have olives either (the menu indicated it did). We told the waiter and that was it, nobody from the food truck stopped to say anything or offer anything in addition. He said he told the chef and the chef updated the web site. WTF? That's the remedy? Just change the menu... great job, Wooden Heart. Even if you only had 2 cheeses due to supply shortages, bring more of another one to us. Something! At least walk over to our table and say something. I know it's not Furioso's fault, but one of the reasons I wanted to go to Furioso was the delicious looking food as well as the views. Furioso delivered on the views, but for service and food quality, both Furioso and Wooden Heart failed miserably.

(#1) For years when this taco cart operated along Portland Road (#2) it was low on the radar but known in the community. Fast forward a few years, it's not quite a brick & mortar, but a space for patrons to sit inside to enjoy their food while everything is cooked outside on a cart. The format isn't for everyone (#3), but it's right up my alley. Beyond the colorful murals along the interior and spacious seating, this is still very much a dive. The place is open typically at night and the cloud of grease that permeates the room from all the fatty meats being grilled up. The ventilation is questionable and the seating (fold up chairs and plastic tables) is hardly glamorous. I don't know if I'd have it any other way. For some folks, seeing certain taco meats sitting in a pool of lard / fat / questionable liquid might be an eyesore but once the grilling begins it's a new ballgame. I enjoy almost all the meats, whether it's their famous al pastor sitting on a tromp with a pineapple on top, or their variety of cecina, carnitas, cabeza (cheek, mainly), barbacoa, and asada. There's no guarantee of what they'll have on any given night, so I'm usually good with whatever they have available. The charred grill is also the same place for their tortillas, which are also fried in said lard, and give off this smokiness that might not be everyone's cup of tea. I think their barbacoa, which is chivo (#4) style, is really the best thing they have. The meat is incredibly tender, juicy, and full of flavor. It completely encapsulates their namesake in "ricos tacos" as one of their signature items. As always, it is cash only and speaking Spanish is a must. I'm not saying it's the best taqueria in the city, but for late night eats, it's certainly one of ones to beat. __________ (#1) Aka "The Godfather" (#2) Twas another time: https://www.yelp.com/biz/taqueria-el-padrino-salem (#3) Real talk: Most folks in Salem will likely never go to a place like this. Both were fantastic! It was very flavorful and well spiced, with the perfect amount of salt and aromatics. The chicken is extremely soft, and the noodles are fresh and properly chewy. The Thai iced tea was very sweet even for my taste, but I still enjoyed it and expect it would be more refreshing if the weather wasn't so cold as it is now. The wait time was maybe 15 minutes, which isn't bad at all, and the cashier was very cheerful and pleasant. The food cart is in the back of a fairly vacant lot, so there's not much to comment on when it comes to ambiance. Overall, it's an excellent choice for takeout that I recommend enthusiastically, and I hope I get to try more of their food next time I'm in the area. :-]

Unfortunately, I came away pretty disappointed. Everything except the pork belly was actually really good. The rice had a good texture and separate grains. The fried egg was crispy and had a nice runny yolk. The cucumbers had a nice thickness and crunch to them (could been colder though). The prik nam pla (fish sauce, chiles, maybe a little lime?) was really great -- something about the flavor really popped for me and was tasty. And everything was served hot and fresh. But the pork belly sucked, and that kinda ruined the dish for me. The fatty parts weren't melt-in-your-mouth at all. They were just chewy. The skin wasn't crispy, it also was chewy. The meaty parts weren't juicy at all, they were tough. I dunno, everything about it seemed wrong. And getting the pork belly right seems like a crucial part of the overall dish. After eating maybe 1/3 of the pieces of pork belly, hoping each time that the bad pieces were just outliers, I gave up and just pushed the rest of them to the side while I ate the rest of the dish. Oh well.

If I'm being honest, I hate using the word "cute." It feels like something you say about a puppy or…read morea teacup, not a place to grab a bite. But here we are Milwaukie Station Food Carts Pod & Beer Garden is... kind of cute. There, I said it. Tucked right next to the TriMet station, it sits in this neat little corner that feels clean, organized, and surprisingly polished for a transit-side stop. What immediately stands out is the lineup. Spots like Good & Evil Wrap Company (which, let me tell you, looks dangerously good), Puddletown Bagels, Kappany, and a handful of others give you a solid variety from Greek-inspired eats to bagels to Chinese food. Hoppy's Chinese was open and doing its thing, and I caught myself eyeing a Cali fruit smoothie that looked like it could save a hot afternoon. That said... a noticeable chunk of carts were closed, and it does take a little wind out of the sails when you're scanning options and hitting a few "nope, not today" moments. Now, location? Absolute win. Being right off the station makes this place a no-brainer if you're hopping on or off transit, or just cruising through Main Street. It feels like a built-in pit stop for commuters quick, convenient, and reliable when everything's open. The area itself is clean, with some small trees and a layout that feels intentional, not slapped together. Definitely not some run-down corner--this place is well-kept. But let's talk reality: it's small. And when the heat rolls in, this place turns into a bit of a sweat box. There are covered areas, sure, but not enough to really beat the sun when it's coming down hard. It's the kind of spot where you find yourself thinking, "Alright, I'm gonna grab my food... and retreat to the car like it's a survival mission." All things considered, I'd land this somewhere between a 3 and 4 stars. Cleanliness, location, and overall vibe? Easy 5. But the size, the number of closed carts, and the heat factor hold it back a bit. Still, I'll be back if for no other reason than to finally get my hands on that Good & Evil wrap that's been calling my name.
