This is not the easiest restaurant to find. To say it's off the beaten path would not absolutely be accurate, but it is just slightly off of the main road and set back on a hill. It's basically in the parking lot of Compass by Margaritaville Hotel. This place provides a great photo opportunity as soon as you walk in the front door to the right, there is a giant gorilla where you will see others posing for pictures. Our first time here. It was a blast. The place is a new add to the neighborhood and it's a yooge win in our opinion. The staff is warm and friendly start to finish! Everyone stops by to check on you and to say hello. Brooke took exceptional care of us and made awesome recommendations for us for food and drinks! We started with the chorizo queso. It was a yummy crowd pleaser! Dang it was tastee! I opted for the house Rita on the rocks and Teresa opted for the Mexican old fashion. Just the name alone got our attention! Sitting up on a hill, this vibrant, colorful spot definitely makes you do a double take, the food and service will make you do a double visit!! The inside is just as exciting and colorful as the outside so be prepared! The giant gorilla wrestler is the first to greet you, make sure you get a photo, especially with the kiddos! We were greeted with a genuine welcome and smiles and sat right away since we were dining at an odd time, in between lunch and dinner. I imagine, with the quality of food, there may be a wait during popular times. Chips and salsa were being delivered as we were being seated and our drink orders were taken right away. With margaritas on the way, we dove into the menu. They've got some very creative tacos and several other choices. We were there for the tacos so hubby ordered three different ones and I got the quesabirria. All of the tacos were delicious but the quesabirria stole the number one slot, they are amazing! We've been looking for a great Tex Mex restaurant in the area for a very long time. No success. Until now. We had looked at the reviews on Yelp and compared several places. Settled on this restaurant. Are we glad we did! The place is fresh and new. The dining area is spacious and there is an incredible view of the mountains. Who doesn't want that while eating Tex Mex? He had the birria taco, the brisket taco and the carne asada taco. I chose the chipotle bbq quesadilla. Let's talk. The tacos were all very good. Very. Good! But the chipotle bbq quesadilla? It. Is. Fire!!! Gives you that slow heat that builds in the back of your mouth but you just can't stop! The pineapple gave it a sweet taste but not overwhelming. I am smitten. Definitely have to get again! We were happy to find out that this is owned by the same people as The Blue Moose, our favorite burger joint that started in Pigeon Forge and is slowly becoming a chain. Went to check out the new place as it is across the street from Little Tokyo. They are situated just off Teaster Ln near the new margaritaville compass hotel. The restaurant is very nicely laid out with a large dining room and U shaped bar past the host stand. The bar area is well decorated and has multiple TVs to watch the game. The service is very attentive and pleasant. I settled on the 3 taco platter for $17.99, I had a smashburger taco, and two quesabirra taco with the consommé dipper. The bartender had chips and salsa brought and I thought the salsa was very good, so many places now have resorted to a flavorless yet spicy tomato purée so this was an excellent improvement. The taco plate came with Mexican rice and beans, just enough. Beans were fun and the rice was decent enough and fresh, so that helps. The tacos were great, I wasn't sure about the smashburgers taco, but it was great and they seem to cater to a more American fusion type of place. I ordered the chicken burrito Togo and it was largely full of rice, but the chicken inside was good, other than that it was fairly average so get the tacos. The arroz con polio caught my eye for next time. Overall the theme of the place is great. Good music, upbeat staff and although I got there at 11:30 and it was quiet, by the time I left it had filled up. The fun art of gorillas working was definitely a new experience but playful nonetheless. They have a nice private area for large parties and the restrooms were very nice and spacious. I was very excited to try out Pigeon Forge's newest restaurant. We came for lunch on a weekday. For a weekday it was already pretty full. The waitress was wonderful and friendly. There are endless tortilla chips and salsa as a free appetizer. The salsa was chunky and was not too spicy, which will please all palates. There is Gorilla verde salsa and habanero salsa in bottles on the side for those who want more heat. Both had great flavor combined with the heat. I got the carne asada and quesobirria tacos. My son got the carne asada and the fried chicken taco. My dad got the quesobirria and smash burger taco. The flour tortilla was nice and grilled. The carne asada had great flavor and the meat was tender. The pickled onions and corn salsa in it also was a nice touch. The quesobirria had lots of meat and lots of cheese, which is a plus in my book. However, the birria broth was just okay. Although we all enjoyed the food and service there are some mistakes that were made. My son's carne asada came with deep fried jalapenos and mine did not have any. Everyone's plate came with rice and charro beans. The rice was way to wet and soggy, but had great flavor. The charro beans were great with lots of meat inside. If you are expecting refried beans, this is not it. Charro beans are more of a Tex-Mex side. I loved it though and have had it before. We all got our sides, but my son's plate did not have any rice or beans. Since they only opened up, there are some bugs to be fixed. Obviously, the problems are with consistency as some in our party had some things and some did not. Also, they need to work on cooking the rice where it is not so wet and more fluffy. We ordered a couple tacos each and then shared just so we could experience as many as possible. The americano was probably my favorite. The chorizo/beef blend was tasty. The chipotle BBQ pork was ok. The BBQ sauce was really sweet and didn't have any heat to it and the shredded cheddar cheese on top just didn't do it for me. the sweet potato was my wife favorite but the variety of textures took a minute to adjust too. the fried avocado was my sister-in-laws favorite. If you've been to pigeon Forge, one common thread in the past has been the over abundance of chain, restaurants, and mediocre concepts. I was recently in the area and decided to try a new restaurant concept called gorilla taco located just off Tesla Lane next to the new Margarita compass Hotel, my expectations were blown out of the water or should I say the jungle Upon visiting this new establishment. Let's break it down. Atmosphere 5 stars: whoever is the owner of gorilla taco Payne's taking Lee took the time and effort in every single detail when establishing the experience in this restaurant. It's lively, colorful, and filled with artwork of gorillas in the most unique human like poses. Additionally, you were greeted by what looks like a 2000 pound gorilla at the entrance. What I like most about this restaurant was that every table was positioned in a way where you did not feel you were on top of someone else, something that is very common in pigeon Forge. This place is fantastic for both families and adults, including the bar, which is large and easily watchable TVs close by. Food 5 Stars: A great atmosphere is a diamond a dozen in pigeon Forge but when it is married with outstanding food, it becomes something truly unique. The menu is diverse, and the food extremely fresh. Whether you order tacos, burritos, or any other item on the menu, you will not be disappointed. I had the Americano taco and the cheeseburger taco both of which I would highly recommend. I am not a drinker, but they had a vast array of margaritas and a full bar, including many different Mexican beers. This is not an ordinary, Mexican restaurant. Service 5 Stars: One thing you have come to expect when you're in the south is good old-fashioned service and hospitality. However, in these times of labor shortages you find that many restaurants and hotels bring in outside labor. One thing this translates to is poor Service. Not so at gorilla taco. They treated you like locals and provided Careful and detailed service that I am sure is the result of good hiring and fantastic training. Value 5 Stars: One thing I have learned when I come to places like pigeon Forge is that if you get good service and good food, you're willing to pay a little extra. Not so here. I found the prices and the value and the serving sizes to be far better than what you would typically find in a tourist area. My dinner which included chips and salsa, queso, two tacos and a beer was $15. Not bad considering the location. All in all, I would write gorilla taco a solid five and would have gone higher if Google was allowed it. If you were there with adults or your family, I would highly recommend that you pay a visit either for lunch or dinner to this outstanding new concept in pigeon Forge. This chain is a perfect example of how an American Corporation can screw up a traditional cuisine. First, let's start with what corporations do well. The building design and restaurant layout is very nice, with nice lighting and a very comfortable feel that invites you to visit. The staff is well-trained and friendly. My only negative was that I had to ask for the check from a manager at the end of the meal after a 10-minute looking for our waiter. Let's get to the food. The food tasted fresh, and the tortilla chips were your average Mexican restaurant style. The quiso cheese can best be described as queso flavored water. It was the thinnest queso cheese dip I ever experienced in a restaurant, chain, or private. This place prides itself on its tacos. They try and Americanize the traditional taco. The highly recommended (by the waiter) roast beef taco was the smallest taco I have ever been served, with 1 piece of roast beef and some cheese, then deep fried. The other taco was a shrimp taco with 3 pieces of 45-60 count shrimp on it. At 7.50 per taco and at most .75 cents food cost it was the most overpriced taco I have ever eaten. So if you want a nice atmosphere to have a beer, I would recommend this place, but if you are hungry for Mexican food, please go elsewhere. read more

My younger daughter was not a fan of the beef and cheese tacos as it tasted different than at home. It did come with two tacos which was a nice surprise. I would have gave 4.5 stars if I could. The reason I didn't do 5 stars is because of the service was slow. We had to wait on getting our drinks refilled and we also had to ask a couple times for an item.
