After getting back onto the fitness wagon, I started riding a bike that was given to me by a friend (an AutoBike from the 90's) to work. After 2 days of commuting to work with it, the bike failed - bike wouldn't shift down anymore and nobody knew how to fix it (several LBS' openly scoffed about the model over the phone and only one LBS was interested to play with it as an "experiment"). Seeing that this wasn't going to be a transportation/fitness solution anymore, I started shopping around for bikes. Previous experience from early college days was that LBS bikes were expensive and staff was hit or miss (nice guys would be there some of the time but there was equal opportunity for jerks who weren't interested in your entry level needs since you didn't come in on a fiberglass fixie with custom colored wheels). Looking on Yelp, I only saw mixed LBS reporting that reinforced what I experienced before. During the research for which $700-1K bike I was preparing to buy, I came across a Northrock bike at Costco and a website that sells 90% assembled bikes (the rest you can do at home). I wasn't prepared to buy a serious bike, as I wanted to see how committed I was in regular bicycling. So, I figured I'd buy one of these (much) cheaper bikes and have it assembled at a LBS. I saw James' company, and sent him an e-mail for a quote. Assembly was inexpensive (or at minimum comparable to LBS), and he even provided some counsel on the two bikes I was looking at. No haughtiness, no pretentiousness - just realistic perspective from what experience he had with the components on these bikes (since the frames are from relative unknowns in the bicycle industry). I ended up buying the (cheaper) Northrock mountain bike, but unassembled in the box. The Costco cashier looked at me wildly, remarking most people were buying the pre-assembled bikes (which I wasn't interested in). Reached out to set up an appointment with James later that evening and surprisingly he was able to come by the next day. He came to my company (since I'm there more often than not), set up his work area in the parking lot, and got to work. He initially estimated about an hour, but it took a bit longer (closer to 2). No worries, I was busy at work anyways. He gave me a call when the build was completed, and went over the bike with me in person. Gave it a spin, everything was fine, and paid James with a properly assembled bike to start riding. I was very happy and thought I would use him again at some point (tune up, tread replacement, etc). Two weeks go by, and on the way to a doctor appointment, I run over the probably largest cluster of goat head thorns in history. Didn't know what they were, pulled one out, and heard a concerning hiss. Plugged it back in, rode into the LBS in downtown San Jose, and they replaced both tubes (with installation) for around $20. They've always been friendly and willing to help in the past, so I returned and had it done while I waited. As I rode my bike for the next two weeks following the tube replacement, I kept hearing a squeak as I rode. The brakes also squeaked a lot more than when I first started riding. Thinking I was still breaking in the pads, I tried to apply some wear by braking lightly while pedaling, but the regular squeaking while riding (and not braking) only got worse and worse. Getting tired of the noise (and potentially concerned that I could be in an event where the brakes could seize), I gave James another call. Explained the situation, he offered to come by later that afternoon. He gave the bike a look over and determined that the recurring squeak (while not braking) was due to the LBS setting the quick release front wheel at an angle (which he showed me). He noted that the brakes might need to be re-braced due to the shift in the wheel, and went to fix it (resetting the wheel, then adjusting the brake). However, turns out the LBS installed tubes where the stem did not wholly extend past the rim, causing the valve cap to be somewhat receded into the opening on the rim. He recommended that I pick up tubes that actually fit the bike, and mentioned that he had sleeves that could help a little bit in protecting from easy puncture. He wasn't upselling hard, he just mentioned what he did in the past from his previous LBS experience. I gave him the go ahead for both items, and he went to work. Took about half an hour, and when I came back, he worked on the brakes some more to remove the squeak when I braked. He also showed me how I could do it on my own to save any future expense (for brake tuning). He gave me the improperly fit tubes that he said should fit my wife's bike based on the description I provided. I wholly recommend James' service to friends with bikes now. His casual demeanor, honest answers, and thorough work is why I'll be returning to him for future service needs (tuneups, tread replacement). Also, it's super awesome to have somebody come to you (compared to driving/riding over to a LBS). read more

What a fantastic experience! My daughter's bike (her only transportation for the 2 mile trip to school) had a flat this morning! Visited Sunnyvale on business. Husband and I rented two road bikes. James delivered them to our hotel when promised in great condition, complete with flat kits (not needed, thankfully) and helmets and water bottles and seat adjustments. He checked ahead of time on what kind of pedals we needed, which was great service. We did an 80-mile loop from Sunnyvale down to Anderson Dam and back and had no problems at all. James is fantastic! I brought my son's Razor kick-scooter in for a last minute repair after a horrendous experience with another local Razor service center. James stopped what he was doing, quickly assessed the problems with the scooter, offered parts that would fix the problem and last longer than the OEM parts, explained how I could help maintain the scooter for my son, was friendly, helpful, and had a great attitude. And all within less than an hour before my son's scooter club activity! He does have a high minimum for credit card orders, so be prepared with cash (or check?) on hand. It's worth it though! I will definitely go back and will be bringing our bikes in for some work next time. This guy was awesome! I had a flat tire and was not confident in fixing it myself, and my bike needed a tune-up anyway. I was so fortunate that he came right to my office and fixed my bike that day. He was professional and on time. My bike ride home was so amazing - like gliding through warm butter it felt so good. My bike rode like new! This is a belated review, but I had a fantastic experience with James. I had an older Centurion Lemans tuned up several months ago; I'm not a pro or advanced biker, but just needed a bike for occasional commutes and exercise. James came to my house with his van to pick up the bike, explained exactly what needed to be done, worked with me to make sure the repairs and parts replacement were well within my (graduate student) budget, and returned the bike within a few days. All the problems that existed before were fixed and the bike rides very smoothly now; the replaced parts make it feel as new. Long overdue praise! I "discovered" James when my neighbors were renting bikes for SJ Bike Party. Since then he's done work on 2 of my bikes (sadly, two I no longer own) and I am sure I'll have plenty of work for him in the future. I LOVE the convenience of at-home or at-work service since it is hard for me to transport a bike to the shop. Not only is it convenient, but he's knowledgeable and has a quick turn around. I try to do some repairs and component swaps myself, but I just don't have all the tools (nor the hand strength or patience) for some of these jobs. I have a 1/2 installed tire on one of my bikes right now and two bruised thumbs. Next time I'm just going to call James. read more

Renting a bike with James was great! I needed a bike for a 6 week stay in Santa Clara and needed it fast. I phoned James and on the next day he delivered it directly to work.
