I'm really bummed out... I've been trying to locate a decent Chinese restaurant in Center Moriches... okay, I get it! They all are take out-no dine in...here's the bottom line... I've tried basically all of 'em near me... here's the bottom line: They are ALL no better than mediocre... now... I'm old and just moved here from the NW, I know what good Chinese is supposed to taste like and these local take-outs aren't even close... To be specific: how often do they change the oil in their deep fryers... how fresh are the ingredients... why the heavy breading... why is there no real "sweet n' sour" or "General TSO sauce"... other than the use of hot chiles there's no difference... Years back, this place made good food. Now it's awful. The inside looks dirty and man, I think they cover up the kitchen for a reason. The last order I got was simple stuff. Gen. Tso's. I ordered crispy with white meat. Instead it came overcooked and chewy. Wonton soup. Broth tasted like dishwater and the wontons were either old or poorly made. They just disintegrated. No chew, no taste. And they gave me a free quart for spending over 30 dollars or whatever, and it just went in the garbage. The containers were worth more than the soup. Shrimp LoMein. The only thing acceptable. At one point I wondered if it was a mistake letting my kids eat it out of fear of food poisoning. Thankfully nobody got sick, and my kids did enjoy the LoMein, but that's the last order I place from there. The whole area lacks good old school chinese food. Season's of China is fair to middling. Tony's is wayyy overpriced. And Gourmet Garden is scary. read more

My favorite Japanese food in Central Suffolk County. Oh and they have Thai & Chinese too! What a great place for lunch! I'm a vegetarian and sometimes feel like I'm getting ripped off with Japanese specials. But at Gourmet Garden, I feel like I'm getting my money's worth. Sushi/rolls are fresh. I love the avocado salad too. Miso soup is wonderful. Salad is delicious. I usually get Sweet Potato Tempura Rolls. WOW! The staff is helpful & professional. Prices are great. This place is right near my home. My sister and I always enjoy walking here. It is definitely not one of your typical Chinese places. I guess from the outside, it looks usual. Certainly isn't! I go here a lot, and it is always good. Today I had a lunch special that was gigantic and incredibly cheap considering how much food I had! I had miso soup, a peanutish Thai salad and three sushi rolls for $12.95. Amazing. And these weren't standard rolls (such as 4 pieces each), these had 8 pieces. x.x Jeez. So I had 24 yummy pieces of sushi. I like that they have so many veggie options. I LOVE the sweet potato roll! It has a delicious bite to it (aka crunch :P). With a sushi special (or any special for that matter), you'll definitely be taking plenty of food home. :) Another interesting thing about this place is that they do have DESSERT. This is one of the better take-out locations (and as far as I can see dine-in restaurants), in the area. Since my wife isn't as big of a Chinese fan as I am, she's been happy to get sushi from here weekly for the majority of the last year. Though there are fusion restaurants like this elsewhere in the area as well, we have found this one in particular to be a bit better than other options. I only eat a certain number of dishes so I should tell you which ones those are so my review has a bit more relevance for anyone reading it. I like BBQ spare ribs (on the bone or boneless), egg rolls, pork fried rice, shrimp with lobster sauce, steamed dumplings, and infrequently an order of Tso's chicken. The dumplings are some of the best I've had. The pork fried rice is done very well (not dried out like other places), and the spare ribs are typically tasty though they don't use any kind of sauce if that's what you prefer. The shrimp with lobster sauce was not my favorite, it seemed a bit watery, but the General Tso's chicken was very tasty. The wife loves the Spicy California Rolls and the spring rolls. Neither of us, when we think about it, care much for the shrimp entrees they have. The shrimp rolls just didn't seem very good. The vegetable tofu soup is absolutely delicious, however, and cheap. You get a large quart of it for around four dollars. We've never eaten in the restaurant, we've only gotten takeout, but the place is normally busy even in the middle of the week. I'm surprised no one else has reviewed it as it does seem very popular. I've never had any mistakes with my orders where they forgot any item, but they have occasionally forgotten a pair of chopsticks or a fortune cookie. The guy who answers the phone is so good that he can usually tell me what my phone number is after I've given the order because he actually pays attention to his customers. That's a plus when you want consistency, but a minus when you don't want to look predictable. This is in a shopping center so there is plenty of parking. It's a Chinese/Japanese restaurant. This is my "go to" place for Japanese take-out. They have a pretty good Maki Roll selection. Fish has always been fresh and it seems to be reasonably priced. They have cool "extras" that they throw in if you order over certain amounts. Depending on your bill you could end up with a free large wonton or miso soup, free california maki roll, free egg rolls, free teriyaki chicken, etc! Adds a nice little touch. It's a very small place (not much seating) but it's located in a shopping center so parking's not an issue. Despite the small size, I've never experienced much of a wait; take-out time is 20 mins max during the busiest hours. Haven't tried the Chinese food so I can't comment on that. Also I think they may have added some Thai options to the menu recently. read more

I am a Thai food junky and have been known to drive great distances for a good phad thai. With Gourmet Garden I can stay local and get a good thai meal at a great value. My business is on Main Street and we often drive the two minutes down the road to take in lunch. We have yet to have a bad meal. Maybe not world class but worthy Thai in our back yard :) read more

We stopped by the other night on our way to somewhere else. I specifically chose this place because of great reviews. The staff was very friendly. The food on the other hand, was not so great. The spicy mustard was not spicy at all. In fact, it came very close to tasting like French's Yellow Mustard. I've never encountered Chinese mustard like this. The fried noodles they put on the table were overcooked. We decided that we would overlook this if the food itself was good, especially after my husband ate the Wonton Soup and enjoyed it. We received our dinner specials (which are not on the menu, we had to ask for it). Overall, the food was pretty bland. The pork fried rice was not greasy at all, but it barely had any flavor. My husband would not put the sauce on his egg fu young because it was oily and did not taste good. I had the chicken and pineapple, which was ok. I remember this place was good back a few years ago. We visited again yesterday, it was rather disappointed, and we will never go back again. The Miso soup was horrible, I had one sip and couldn't stand it. I ordered a Chirashi, about $16, but the portion was like an appetizer, the fish was fine sliced like smoked salmon! I am a big sushi lover, and I have never had that super thin fish slice before. For a $16 Chirashi, that's definitely not cheap. Consider the size of the serving you get, that's a very expensive "dinner". Together with 2 California rolls, and the Chirashi, that was $28 + tax. I was nice enough to give $3 tip. My family and I are regulars at this Chinese/Japanese restaurant. The food is excellent - much better than most take out restaurants. We usually eat in. My kids love the Sushi. I like many of the Japanese items, as well. Spicy chicken roll is my daughter's favorite and the California Roll is my son's favorite.
