Oh my goodness. The food here is sooooo good. I love that you can order from four different cuisine styles. It allows me to try new things, or things I love to eat in a different way. I have steamed shrimp dumplings, fried calamari, and crispy sesame chicken teriyaki with broccoli. All delish. Happened across this place as I was traveling but if I am ever in the area again, I will definitely stop. When I walked it, it was very clean, the lunch tables were full and I believe there were more tables in the back. The gentleman at the front was very polite and professional. This used to be my favorite Chinese take-out restaurant, and I would have rated this three stars, but they have recently undergone a change, and not a good one. Prices are up, which is quite understandable, but quality is way, way down: with the change of containers to round plastic ones, you don't even know if your 'pint' is an actual pint, and an order of subgum chicken chow mein not only lacked almonds entirely, but was mostly inedible broccoli stems with peas and carrots. This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in the planet and I've had Chinese in nearly "Chinatown" around the world. Their Orange Chicken was my go to during my 7 years when I was at Stony Brook University for undergrad and grad school from 1987 to 1994. Every time I visit NY I must go there for the Orange Chicken even if I have to drive from NYC to Stony Brook. It's that good! All the Chinese take-out restaurants near Stony Brook University are crap. The difference is that this one is the closest so the food should be relatively "fresh" upon arrival. Lots of breading on the General Tso's chicken and I did not appreciate the chewy, low quality beef with slippery overcooked string beans. Everything was piping hot but the chunks of meat and veggies swimming in dark glutenous sauce did not have any "wok" flavor. Fried Chicken Wings were surprisingly tasty! Served in a foil-lined bag, they are coated heavily (extra crispy) with a five-spice seasoned flour. BRACE YOURSELF..... They've stopped serving the student special. read more

Without a doubt the best Chinese takeout option available in this area. Our food was hot and tasted very fresh. All chicken dishes at Lan Wo are made with big chunks of all white meat. The roast pork fried rice was way better than the RPFR at other Chinese places, as it was made with fresh veggies and huge chunks of pork spare ribs. The egg drop wonton mixed soup was really, really good. We ordered a quart, which included at least 6 huge wontons. Anyone slamming this place for "rude" service needs to put things in perspective. It's a Chinese take-out place, not The River Cafe. You mean to tell me that other Chinese take-out places roll out the red carpet when you order/pick up your food? Get serious. They are trying to prepare your food in fifteen minutes, so excuse them if they don't kiss your rear-end every time you call. Off my soapbox now. Lan Wo is my go-to place for Chinese takeout. I've been going to them for years and find their food quality a little above average when compared to similar local takeout places, with typical prices. Their combination plates are a good deal (with pork fried rice and an eggroll with the dinner combo). I do like their pork fried rice. I usually get the General Tso's Chicken combo, which has been consistently good over the years. Recently I tried their Sesamee Chicken and was disappointed by some chicken pieces being dry and chewy. I've also tried their Shrimp With Lobster Sauce, where the quality of the shrimp can vary from time to time. Other dishes that have been good here are Chicken With Broccoli, Moo Goo Gai Pan, and Pork Egg Foo Young. As with similar takeout places, orders are prepared quickly: usually within 10-15 minutes of calling. I expect to keep them as my first choice for Chinese takeout for a long time. 3/19/2016 Update: Sadly, I had to downgrade my rating from 3 stars to 1 after discovering that Lan Wo has multiple violations listed on the Suffolk County Health Department's website (from a Dec 2015 inspection). I hope they fix their problems soon, so I can feel comfortable patronizing them again. Meanwhile, I've yet to find a local Chinese Takeout place with food as tasty as Lan Wo's. read more

I was staying at a hotel and needed a place that would deliver. This was awful. I ordered several different dishes- Vegetable & Bean Curd soup, fried bean curd, veggie lo mein and chicken with snow peas. The good points: fast delivery, food was delivered hot The Bad Points: Nothing tasted good. The 'veggies' in the soup and the lo mein were far from any traditional Chinese vegetables. The soup literally had peas in it. To add insult to injury, the vegetables were disgusting and I'm pretty sure from a can. The lo mein sauce was odd tasting, like someone had decided to just put a ton of black pepper in it. The chicken was not tender and the dish itself was more soupy than the soup. I couldn't recommend this place to anyone- even those I do not like. The place has been in business forever so apparently either I had them on a very bad night or this poor excuse for Chinese food is loved despite the flaws. Honestly, this place isn't that bad.. It's your typical Chinese take out. Egg plants with garlic sauce - too little eggplants for lunch special and too big chucks of peppers and onions. The eggplants didn't have much flavoring. Won't order this again Chicken with Broccoli - Honestly, FJ's make the best Broccoli. Idk what is their secret, but it's good like any other Chinese take out Hot and Sour Soup - Hard to say whether others would like it because everyone has a different taste as to how H&S Soup should taste like, but I liked it. It wasn't spicy at all but it was definitely sour. They also have strips of beef inside which wasn't bad. Free fried crackers or whatever you call it. Americanized Chinese food isn't an authentic cuisine to begin with, so don't question or critique too much.. but I do have to say that they didn't give napkins. Closest thing to SBU. read more

Great for stony brook university students because they have the dinner and lunch combo for cheap. Food isn't too great. This is probably the worst of the four Chinese takeout places in this area which are LAN wo, king wah, Chung how and empire smithtown. Also I believe a new one just opened nearby but forgot the name This place seems lazy in preparing their vegetables. They always slice it in huge chunks which if you do for onions makes it taste like onions which is kinda bad. Otherwise, it tastes like any Americanized Chinese takeout that you would expect. Our favorite go to Chinese cuisine for the quality and reasonable price. The food has always been consistently good throughout the years and they have the best sesame chicken around, all white meat. I tend to order the chicken and broccoli for a lower calorie option which I love, but the sesame chicken and shrimp are my weaknesses. The appetizer of boneless ribs is Dee-lish. Perfectly charred, marinated to perfection this dish NEVER disappoints,So Good! My daughter always orders the fried dumplings which is her favorite and the wonton soup. My husband enjoys the Moo Shu Pork with hoisin sauce and extra pancakes. The fried rice here is very good and full of pork. Half my family gets the egg rolls and the other half chooses the spring roll. I usually choose the spring roll because it's not as heavy. They gave us a vat of hot house mustard and house duck sauce which was very generous. Consistently good food and always our go to for Chinese takeout. read more

Food is pretty decent. I like their pork fried rice. Most chinese places have yellow fried rice but theirs is more brown colored. Not sure if thats a good thing but I prefer it. Like some other people have commented, the staff can definitely come off rude but I don't think its intentional. It took me a while to get a good rapport with them. read more

I think this place has really good tasting Chinese food. I enjoy it very much. My favorite dish is the Hot and Spicy Shredded Beef. The other items they have is also good. I never had a problem with them. I know however they changed owners but the same cook is still present. Again this is where I get my Chinese food in the local area. Cheap and yummy steamed vegetable dumplings! Got 8 for $5! The place however is a little run down, but perfect for pickups/delivery.

I would not recommend this establishment for several reasons. First, I've seen them coughing and sneezing without covering their mouths, I've witnessed them eating in the back with their bare hands then handling food and they are not friendly at all. I live in the area and there are other Chinese food takeout options....it seems like my business is not appreciated there, as they are rude and unfriendly. Been going there for over 25 years. Food has always been Awesome! The prices are reasonable. I developed mad respect for them because they were open and serving food through the last two blackouts from hurricanes. They had generators. I don't think they have ever taken a snow day from any snow storm. They always open. They are all very nice people and work hard for our community. read more

I know, five stars for a chinese takeout place? Well, if five stars on Yelp means "as good as it gets," I don't think I can give out any less. This place is as good as Chinese takeout gets. It's in a strip mall. Alongside a laundromat, a karate place, and a salon. And it's mainly hidden from the street behind the massive Kumo. But don't drive by. The general tso's chicken is the best you'll find. Real, large chunks of chicken breast fried and sauced to perfection. I want to try something different, but 70% of the time I just report to the general. But everything else is pretty good too, and stands out from the millions of other takeout places in long island. I think their chicken wings deserve a mention as well, because they are actually some of the best wings you will find anywhere. Meaty and fried, with a subtle curry flavor and sweetness. Best chinese food in the area. A new place opened closer to our home, so we stopped ordering from Lan Wo. Decided to go back because the new place isnt very good. WOW. I have never had a dish with HUGE pieces of WHITE MEAT chicken like I got from Lan Wo. FANTASTIC. General Tso's combo was loaded with these huge pieces of WHITE MEAT Chicken breast.
