I love Gourmet House. It is pricier than most local places, but the quality makes up for it. My favorites are their Shrimp Toast, Lettuce Wraps, Pot Stickers and House Fried Rice. Their homemade sweet and sour sauce is the BEST. Ask for extra on the side! They have a convenient drive-thru for pick up, and their service is always friendly. I've never dine-in there, but I usually stop by carryout since they have a convenient drive-thru window. Been eating there for a few years now and they are close by. Out of all the nearby Chinese places like King Wok, Yen Ching, and etc., they have the best tasting consistent food. I would recommend the Orange Beef or Mongolian Beef! read more

Why is it so hard to find good Chinese out this way? Better than others that I've tried but still just okay.

First of all, I ordered a scallop dish. Literally couldn't find the scallops. After literally searching through the weird brown gravy that was apparently their spicy schezuan sauce (?), I found the tiniest scallops I've ever seen and still VERY FEW of them. The scallop to vegetable/sauce ratio was approximately 1:1,000. It was beyond disappointing; it was a rip off and not good at all. Next, I ordered a spicy shrimp dish. The shrimp were either ridiculously overcooked OR pre-cooked and thrown into a sauce that was 1. not spicy and 2. not tasty. I liked the hot and sour soup and the fried rice (the rice itself, not the shrimp in it, which most certainly were precooked shrimp because they were flavorless and imparted no flavor at all to the fried rice). The shrimp toast was very greasy but decent enough. Would I go back? No. I wouldn't. I decided to try Gourmet House and make a trip from Crystal Lake due to the good Yelp Reviews. It will be the last time I eat here. Chen's in Crystal Lake is better (still not great). For anyone looking for truly delicious Chinese food, check out Chef Ping in Rolling Meadows. Gourmet House owners...I'm going to suggest you do the same to see what good Chinese food is. read more

We have gone here for lunch during the week and on the weekends. Food is consistently good and the service is fast. The wait staff is always pleasant and the lunch specials come with soup and an egg roll. Both are very good. This was our first time trying here! Chicken lo mein and sweet n sour chicken were delicious! The lo mein didn't taste too greasy/oily at all. Also ordered the appetizer sampler. The Crab Rangoon was awesome! Egg rolls were decent. Thought the chicken wings and chicken on a stick were a little dry and bland tho. However the pineapple sweet and sour was delicious! We've been eating at this restaurant every now and again for a couple of years and it never fails to impress us. The wait-staff is wonderful, and their egg rolls are really delicious. We love the variety and enjoy trying different things from the menu. Occasionally we'll find a dish we aren't too fond of or unfortunately just is missing a little something that day, but typically, we always have left overs and are eager to start on them the next day (or sometimes, just a couple hours after :-D ). read more

My husband and I thought we finally found a good Chinese restaurant in McHenry County. The food was fresh and flavorful. At our 3rd or 4th dining experience, we ordered our favorite vegetable dumplings. To our astonishment there was not 1 but 2 short black hairs clearly visibly fried into the dumplings. When we alerted the wait staff she examined it took the plate and walked away. Later another wait staff came by to ask if everything was ok. No one offered any replacement, deduction from our bill or apology for the hair in our food. We never went back. Got to Chef Ping in Rolling Meadows much better read more

Gourmet House has been my go to chinese restaurant for years. I love everything about it, I mostly order delivery now, but it is fast and fresh. Never have had an issue. My family and I are extremely allergic to mushrooms, so in the checkout it asks for any comments and I put our food allergy there and we never have to worry.
