Grace's Inn is one of those places that takes me down memory lane. As a kid I used to eat at Grace's Inn and it was a beloved little diner that I always had a fond feeling towards, and I think with that history under my belt with this place it saddens me to give this place a moderate rating... it's located on South Beretania right next to Times Supermarket, and shares the parking lot with the market. Even through the years, Grace's Inn has an old timey feel to it. It has the age and the look and I was definitely eager to revisit the food I had grown up eating. I decided on the mochiko chicken regular and gravy fries, while my company ordered katsu curry regular. Quantity wise, the plates themselves definitely hold a promising weight to it, the portions are decent and the presentation isn't amazing but it's just what I expect from a place like this. My first impression of the mochiko chicken: it's okay, the texture is nice and soft and the breading has a faint crunch but still soft enough to where it isn't tiresome to chew through. The Mac salad could use a little more flavor but it was fine as is. The little side of kimchi was the interesting thing though... unlike the usual kimchi you would expect, this one was rather sweet and had a hint of tang. I assumed it was a special kimchi of theirs and to be honest, I'm kind of here for it. Gravy fries: fries were decent, the gravy was a bit bland so it wasn't too memorable. I'm a sucker for gravy so that's why I got it. Katsu chicken curry: the curry was strange... it was bland aside from a weird spiciness it held. The more you ate the more spicy it got and it's one of those things where the flavor is practically spice and nothing else. The curry had no unique flavor of its own nor did it really strike me as a curry I'd want again.. at this moment the Mac salad was a lifesaver for dumbing down the spice. Overall: a little disappointed. Pricing wise it's okay, just like any other diner lunch plate place. Quantity isn't always better than quality even though quantity is one of the key factors in my eyes... but when the quality is significantly lacking, quantity has a little less worth. Would I still eat at Grace's Inn? Yeah, sure if someone wanted to. Is it anywhere at the top of my list? No. But for sentimental reasons maybe if I'm feeling nostalgic again I'll give it another whirl. read more

Grace's empire has fallen. I received a tiny portion of cold, hard, undercooked chicken katsu that I would have sent back to the kitchen if I wasn't already at home with my takeout order. Chicken katsu was their specialty, but they apparently don't care to make it right anymore. The sauce was watery, too. Their mochiko chicken was only slightly better, but again, cold and old. During the dinner rush?!! 3 pieces of mochiko chicken came in my mini size. 3 pieces?? I was still hungry. Mac salad was ok. Cheeseburger was fine. Fries were a bit undercooked. Asian slaw had NO dressing. Kim Chee had no flavor, just vinegar (missing the chili garlic punch). Seriously disappointing since I took an out of town guest there and had told him how great the place was and how long it has been around. I came here because it was a spot my aunty said she loved growing up . We were so hungry after attending a graduation but when we got there questioned we're asked and the cashier was just rude talking with her back turned . Also the gentlemen's in the back were just laughing . We witnessed the fries being weighed with no wax paper and no gloves God knows what else they put on that scale besides fries . The portions was a joke the regular chicken katsu basically was one whole thigh butterflied and cut into two pieces . The noodles was skimpy as well . For the price paid especially being that expensive it's not even worth eating there . The food was just terrible all the way around !!! The fries for $4 half the bag was filled . Like come on you brought the frozen fries from sams club or costco and you just paid for almost the whole bag you buy at sams club for one order . That's just petty and not cool . This place used to be my go to place for a large plate lunch. Just went there last week and ordered the chicken katsu and mini mochiko chicken. Before the chicken katsu plate had so much food and was so large the cover of the container would be bulging. The mini mochiko was the same. This time the chicken katsu had two small cutlets and the container was so empty the side salads and katsu sauce container could all fit in the container with space to spare. The mini mochiko chicken had four small pieces it looked like a cold portion. Very disappointed and not sure I'll want to go back if this is the portions now. Hopefully not. read more

This location in particular is located next to Time's Supermarket on South Beretania St. This is my first time eating here with my man who is a fan of their hamburger steak plate lunches. Grace's Inn has a shared private parking lot with Time's. Walking in the restaurant, immediately I can feel and smell the age of this place. The interior is very plain with very minimal decor (a few artificial plants) and it looks very rundown. Chairs have mold/debris stuck to the backs and seats are peeling, exposing the foam underneath. What makes this place just barely ok is their friendly staff. The ladies working the counter are cheerful and welcoming. I automatically got smiles when I approached the counter. Food was neatly placed on the plate (not just sloppily thrown on). Speaking of the plates though, they use FOAM plates. I can't believe I lived on Oahu almost all my life, and only now I got try this place. This place is your typical local mixed plate kind of place. They have the popular local hawaiian food to choose from for a pretty affordable price. My co-workers and I decided to take out from here for a going away party. And few of us got the chicken katsu, beef cutlet, mochiko chicken , mahi mahi, and the goes on. I got the mini mochiko chicken. It comes with a scoop of rice (white/brown) a choice of salad: mac, toss, or asian slaw. And a little bit chowfun on the bottom.The chicken was really good, crispy and not hard. And the mac salad wasn't bad. The chowfun was ok. It was a little dry. If you decide to get a regular plate. You have 2 scoops of rice, a choice of salad, kim chee and chowfun. I like this place. I like that the food is good, the portions are pretty big, and the prices are pretty reasonable for the quality, amount and variety that you get in one meal. Way better than L&Ls in my opinion. I also love the fact that you can substitute things for no additional charge i.e. all salad no rice, or one scoop rice and extra chowfun etc. They also are able to take large orders for big groups the day of. You just have to call at least one hour in advance. I like this place, and I would come here again if I want a quick cheap bite to eat. I think they did away with their breakfast as i dont see the breakfast menu displayed I'm on the board anymore. Their katsu sauce is the best, among all the drive in places be been too. The katsu is served over their famous chow fun. Usually the mini plates is perfect for me. You have choice of 1 salad choice for a mini and 2 salad choice for a regular plate. On the day that I went, the soda machine was not serviced therefore not all drink flavors were available. It was rather slow when I went and I instill had to wait long for my order. They ran out of chicken adobo special, the main reason I came in, as I ordered they ran out, out of meatloaf too. I ordered the chow fun, some of the noodles were hard, ground beef not pork, no bean sprouts, I ordered the roast beef, it was sliced thin and tasted like what you imagine dog food to taste like, my mother ordered the chicken and tofu with vegetables, there were 5 tiny slivers of chicken almost comparable to a tooth pick, tofu and a lot of cabbage, no other veggies just cabbage. As a local and growing up eating these types of food I was highly disappointed, I don't even want to talk about how unsanitary the kitchen was, you can see it through the pick up window. Haven't eaten here in a while and when the boss said she was craving chicken katsu from Grace's, I jumped at the chance to ride along. The staff is always so friendly and the service is fast. I only eat chicken katsu from Grace's as I feel it's the best and they have the best katsu sauce. The chicken katsu is so crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. Stopped by on lunch break for a bite to eat. I remembered Graces Inn when they had a location in Waimalu. I wasnt particularly impressed with the food this time around. However, portion sizes where ample and service was quick. I wouldnt recommend this place as a regular spot to frequent, but it will do in a pinch if you need to grab a quick bite. Overall, food is mediocre but service was great. I'll give it awhile before I try this place again. Hopefully I just caight them on a bad cook kinda day. read more

The mochiko chicken plate. OMG. This is my favorite, and it comes with 2 kinds of salad plus kim chee AND the famous look funn under your entree. Wish there was more look funn! We've actually been going to Grace's since I was in high school and we used to walk to the truck parked by UH. Totally worth it! Also famous for their chicken katsu, with its crispy, delicious chicken-ey goodness. And katsu sauce. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it... We usually get takeout, but you can eat inside too. I'm so upset with myself because I always forget this place exist and go to zippy's instead when this place is a far superior choice! The prices are cheaper and you get more bang for your buck! My mom always used to order from here for me when I was younger. I'm kicking myself for every time I went to Zippy's instead of Grace's especially during grace's opening hours. I randomly thought of grace's chow fun and BAM it hit me I needed to eat here that day! I was craving chicken katsu and got a regular plate. Wow the portions are massive! You get two choices of salad, and I chose 1 mac and 1 asian cole slaw. It also comes with a bed of chow fun! They asked if I wanted kimchi and I said sure??? but I believe kimchi is free so if you like it, get it! Their regular plate was so huge, I couldn't finish it by myself. My boyfriend ate half of my plate after I was done and there was more than one scoop of rice left and half of the chicken katsu. I love their sides and it is a lot more value than just your usual one scoop of mac salad from Zippy's. There wasn't anything special about the food aside from the fact that it was so damn cheap! ALL of that was only $9 (that's with a drink). I've been coming here for years and the food is always good, the service on the other hand, not so much. The lady that runs the register seems very irritable and got irritated when she was taking my order and I changed my mind on the type of salad I wanted on my plate stating "ugh now I have to void it". While waiting for our order she constantly asked the girl in the back training two new girls if they "can read". I guess they messed up on a couple of the plates. Overall she did make sure we got all 6 of our plates correct and as usual the food was ono. After food shopping at Times, the hubby and I headed to Grace's (which shares the same parking lot as Times on Beretania) and both got mini combo plates. I got mine with chicken katsu and hamburger steak, and he got his with chicken katsu and shoyu chicken. We loved it! I do think they make the katsu ahead of time (not made to order) because our food was pretty quick to come out, but that's ok. It was still somewhat crispy, and most importantly, not oily or soggy. The mini combos are served on a small bed of their infamous chow fun, and come with one scoop rice and your choice of mac or tossed salad. All for a little over $6. We have always loved eating the chicken katsu plates but recently we noticed the quality wasn't as good as before. The price has gone up but the quality has definitely decreased. There was a noticeable difference in the color and texture of the pieces of chicken katsu in our plate. It looks like we got refried pieces and only a handful of fresh pieces. When you think of old school plate lunches, Grace's (and Diner's) comes to mind. What you get with these places are big portions and consistency. You could have stepped into Graces 15 years ago and ordered a Chicken Katsu and it still tastes the same as today. This is what is known as comfort food. Food you remember growing up. I like this location better than the one in Aiea, which is now closed down. I always did like their roast pork which I drown in hot sauce. What I like is that the portions are really worth the price and you could mix two things together for a mix plate. You feel like craving two things at one time? Graces Inn could do that for you! Their gravy fries is my favorite to have a quick bite. When you order a plate lunch, it comes with two salads which you could choose from (tossed greens, Asian cole slaw, or macaroni salad). I like their Asian cole slaw. And it also comes with kimchee! You could get it or not, it's optional. And in their plate lunches, they surprise you with chow fun on the bottom of the food. Earlier in the year, I had stopped by for their famous Chicken Katsu plate, and believe me, the Chicken Katsu is da BOMB!!!!! This time, I was strictly here for their Shoyu Chicken.........what can I say, the portions were very generous, the Shoyu Chicken was EXCELLENT! Marinaded right, chicken was soft & came off the bone very easy. My plate came with brown rice, kim chee, & salad..........and of course you cannot forget the bonus chow funn under the entree. A very old establishment, and the building showing it's age, Grace's gives the same huge amount of local greasy food as my hanabata days. Same type of greasy food as L&L, but differently locally made and a huger portion with chow fun that comes with it: Katsu Curry - 3 stars - For about $8, a huge portion of curry with 2 scoops rice, salad and chow fun on the bottom. However, the curry tasted really different with a lot of cinnamon in it that my curry eating monster and I didn't care for it too much, but the chow fun was a special addition that we liked. I don't think I will order the curry again. I think they would have enjoyed the local moco & katsu special instead.
