I haven't eaten at Grace's in almost 20 years. I was passing by this afternoon and thought it'd be great to have their chicken cutlet that I used to pig out on. Maybe a staple to those of us that live in Makiki but I sure do not see the camera toting, flip flop wearing matching couple Japanese tourist stumbling in to check it out while walking around- here is more a locals mostly establishment. I say locals mostly because there is really no frills. It seems to me that many of the patrons are families or busy people getting off work or trying to get to work who just need a quick meal to get them through the day. The seating is no frills. Chairs and table set ups that one would find before Ray Croc optimized McD into red and yellow bright colors. The place is 'as is' as it gets while still feeling homey and clean. I like breakfast. Eggs made just the way I want them fried with bacon- can't go wrong (you can go wrong if you are my cardiologist- but Yelp reviews would agree more with me). Lunch- a hamburger steak or loca moco- side of white rice and belly is happy. Wait time is longer than say McD, you will see a handful of people not making eye contact because they are upset that it is a busy day which makes food take longer. If I could give a score lower than one star, this place would get it. The hamburger curry was very bland. The chili cheese fries taste like the chili was two days old and out of a can. I ordered two mini chicken Katsura as well but they drowned them both with curry. What made matters worse she repeated my order to Times to see if it was correct and she still got it wrong . I would've given 5 stars but they unexpectedly stop accepting their gift certificates. The process to get a refund is very long and unnecessary in my opinion. I fully understand that with a new owner they don't need to accept the certificates but they could've used it as a credit for the face value and let me pay the difference. They could then send the certificates they collected and gotten the refund at one time from the previous owner instead of making customers have to first come in and find out they don't take the certificates anymore, contact the old owner, mail out the certificates to the old owner, have the old owner mail out dozens of refund checks. It would've been a nicer experience to just be offered credit for what we paid. But the review is 4 stars because even though I was very upset about the certificates and refund process, I must say the food seems to have gotten much better. I was told they were given all the recipes so you would think it would be the same but I had the sweet sour pork and this order was amazing and had a darker brown color then previously. The grave was also a bit thicker and was much more filling. So although not happy about not having the certificates anymore to get a discounted plate I will definitely be back to see if everything else has improved. read more

Since my family has lived in Hawaii for 5 generations, I consider myself qualified to rate plate lunches. Been a customer for at least 35 years. Hands down, this is my favorite plate lunch spot. Mochiko Chicken is my favorite because it is not super common to find. Kalua Pork, Chicken Katsu, and Teri Beef are always good. Portions are good, everything is freshly prepared, and everything is reasonably priced. For the newbies, if they ask you if you want Kim Chee, say yes. I think they were way ahead of the curve because Kim Chee a new trend outside of Hawaii and other areas without large Korean population. When first time Hawaii visitors ask me where to go that is not on tourists' radar, I always mention Grace's. I have been living in Japan and Dallas for the past 23 years, so I only get to visit Hawaii once a year. At least 3 times in my 1 week vacation, I stop by for a plate lunch. My wife and kids asleep and my parent's house, and I sneak off for a Chicken Katsu breakfast. No tell. Most of the ladies working behind the counter are the same from at least the 1990's. Covid 19 cancelled this year's trip, so I have to wait until my next visit. If you are local, please do me a favor--spend money there and maybe buy gift certificates. I feel like this is the place that could be categorized as 'last chance supper'. When you're just too worn out to think of any place that is decent or everything else has closed. A place that is ragged, but not in the charming way such as Byron's. With service that depending on the person can be adequate or completely disrespectful and unprofessional. I try to avoid this place as much as possible now since it's suffering more and more in various areas. 1) The service today was so rude and lazy that it was such a turnoff that I'll never go back. Subpar food can be tolerable at times if you're truly hungry, but terrible customer service is never "A-OK". 2) The chicken is never fully cooked. Grace's Inn has been a long-time family favorite. Because I grew up in Pearl City, Aiea Grace's was one of our family's "spots" for last minute lunch/dinner (take out of course). Since leaving Pearl City and moving into town, I randomly (but quite often) crave Grace's Katsu / Katsu Curry with extra Grace's Chow Fun. The food is consistently good, but nothing to scream and shout about if you didn't grow up with this. This "town" location on South Beretania is convenient; I don't have to drive my @$$ all the way down to Aiea for some Grace's. The South Beretania location isn't new or anything, just new to me (being a newbie Townie and all). To be honest, I actually like this Grace's better than the Aiea one. Even though the Aiea Grace's Inn will always be my home-base Grace's, the town one is now my "Go-To" favorite. This South Beretania Grace's Inn is cleaner, faster, friendlier, and nicer! You got your Japanese chicken katsu with the localized katsu sauce. Chow fun which is Chinese but it's Okazuya style. Mac salad, another local favorite and a side of Kim Chee which is Korean. A schmorgesborg of goodness that somehow....just works. The katsu is good b/c it's nice and crispy. The portions here are very generous as well. I mean quality wise we're not talking Ginza Barin or Kimukatsu but you have to come here expecting plate lunch/take out Chicken Katsu. I'll be honest when I say that I haven't tried anything else here other than the Katsu and the hamburger steak. But with those 2 dishes alone, I won't hesitate to come back. I just wish Grace's was more readily available....they use to have one in Market City that closed so now it's a bit inconvenient for me to go. Alright, if you're on a diet, avoid this place. Other than that, if you could give a rip about your calorie count and all you want is a good plate lunch at a good price then step right in. I've really only ever gotten two things from Grace's, and that's not going to change for nothing. Chicken Katsu and Hamburger steak. The best thing about Grace's, you can get a mixed plate with chicken katsu AND hamburger steak. What else do you really need? It comes with 2 scoops of rice, a scoop of mac salad, a little useless container of kim chee, and chow fun...CHOW FUN! I'll admit, the chow fun ain't great, the kim chee is below mediocre, but all that food for $7 and you'll be stuffing your face with quite possibly some of the BEST chicken katsu on the island? Well shoot, I don't think you'd get a better deal than that unless they started serving some beer on tap. Now that I got the minor stuff out of the way, the chicken katsu is what it is. If you order just the katsu alone you get a mound of chicken, breaded, greasy, with ketchup style dipping sauce. It is awesome, it makes my mouth water thinking about it and after I eat it I don't want to move. The hamburger steak, depending on their mood I get anywhere from 2-3 patties, gravy, on everything. If they put it on the kim chee it'd be that much better. The patties are filling and tasty, sometimes on the dry side, but it's O-K. Like I said, gravy on everything. When I'm feeling saucy, I get the mixed plate. If I'm feeling real froggy I get gravy on EVERYTHING. Damned technicalities change it from katsu to cutlet. I still get the katsu sauce though. I love the ketchup style sauce, it's much better than that vinegary stuff that they give you at L&L. You still get between 2-3 patties, depending on their mood.
