Lunch in Honolulu, Hawaii... Grace's Inn is a very popular, local restaurant. It's known for its plate lunches, filled with comfort food. Everything is served in takeout containers - and dining-in is available! Parking is free and plentiful. I tried to park on the right side of the building, but every space was taken. I drove around the building and parked on the left side - next to Times Supermarket and Epi-ya Bakery. Service by the "aunties" is efficient and with the Aloha Spirit. One Aunty noticed that I looked lost. She asked me if I ordered yet ... I said, "No... I can't decide." She logged into her cash register and took my order... I got the Hamburger Steak Plate (with white rice because I didn't ask for brown). She asked me what sides I wanted... I chose Tossed Greens and Asian Cole Slaw. After waiting a while (there were several other customers, too), I got my package and drove home. When I opened my package, I was a bit disappointed because it wasn't the cool container that Donna O. recently posted. Oh, well... I was hungry and dug in... Mmm! Tasty gravy and rice! The hamburger patties were homemade! They were on a bed of local-style chow funn noodles... Thick and starchy... Haha! On the other hand, I really liked the sides! Delicious salads! I will return and get the Chicken Katsu that everyone raves about! It's probably going to happen very soon! read more

I went to this restaurant and ordered the daily special. I even pointed at the plate on the menu, and the lady who took my order (Lorraine) repeated it back to me under her mask, so I was sure she understood. But when I got home, I found something completely different from what I had asked for, not the dish I wanted or had been craving. It may seem like a small thing, but it feels very ugly when someone deliberately treats you with disregard, as if you don't belong. I can't help but feel that this wasn't an accident, but that she singled me out simply out of malice. Ending up with food you didn't order and didn't want is frustrating, and I'm sure others have gone through the same. My hope is that Lorraine finds a little kindness in her heart and starts treating every customer with the same respect. read more

Grace's chicken katsu was the first and only back in the day. It is still just as good and I will still come back but maybe not as much as before. I always get a mix of chicken katsu and pork cutlet with gravy all over. The chicken katsu and pork cutlet is still really tasty but the chow fun's quality has gone down. It is just not good. I know the times of full plate lunches for $10 has disappeared and replaced with half plates for $15. It is what it is. It is still disappointing when it feels like yesterday I couldn't finish 1 plate and now I'm left still hungry and more broke. New owners? Kids took over and wanted more profit margin? Grace's has been one of my favs since they were in Beretania in Moiliili. Didn't have the chance to try them when they first started as a lunch wagon by UH back then. They do a good job on all the local favorites and have daily specials that make the grade and I like how they have a little chow fun on the plate under what you ordered. I always seem to get their Teri beef plate, sauce all over and yes, got to have their very mild Kim Chee. It's good and almost like a side vegi. However, over the last few years, while still good, my orders seemed not to be as good as I remember it. But, to my happiness this last time my Teri beef was really good and my belly was completely satisfied. The hamburger steak curry plate was good, not the best that I've had. Chow fun was no chow fun at all. Maybe this is Hawaiian version of chow fun. The chow fun on mainland USA is much different. We moved out of Kalihi in '84 and Grace's Inn was still at the Dillingham location if memory serves. We lived straight up the street and every so often, we'd go pick up dinner at one of the many plate lunch places, including Grace's. Known for their good food in generous portions, as well as their chow fun noodles, cabbage kim chee and well flavored mac salads. I don't know what came over me, but just out of the blue, I started craving for a Grace's plate lunch. I took a detour from my route home after work, and.... THEY'RE CLOSED ON WEDNESDAYS!!??? Bummed out, I went home. But now, I was on a mission.... I went back on Thursday, and YES!!! They're open!! After all that fuss, I look at the menu and I'm totally lost... What did I come here for?? What do I want??? Rule of thumb: If you don't have a clue as to what you want, get the mixed plate. You get to try 2, maybe 3 different things in one sitting. Today's mixed plate consists of beef stew, teri pork and roast pork. You also get to choose 2 sides. Mac salad, tossed greens, Asian cole slaw, kim chee and a few others that blew by me. Mac salad and kim chee was my choice, for old times sake. Order was up in less than 10 minutes. So I get home and wasted no time digging into my plate. It's as good as I remember! Beef cubes in the stew just falls apart. Not chewy like most other places. Teri pork is a very "classy" sweetness. Roast pork is awesomely tender. And the chow fun... After soaking up all the gravy, it is delectable! The mac salad and cabbage kim chee was just as I remembered it. At $13.95, the price was on par with the competition. And the best part... I'm not getting a reaction to MSG! I might just have to make more detours after work. read more

Decided to come here for take out lunch. I orders my go to chicken katsu with extra chow fun. I had so much anticipation of eating this plate that I haven't had one in years. The cashier in front was very pleasant and welcomed my friend and I. She even threw in the cents for the balance of the bill for two plates. Price of two plate lunches were over $30+. The inside was the same as always, not anything changed. It's as clean as they keep it. There's ample parking if you turn into the first right which will be right next to Grace's. We took the plates home to eat, and my friend was a little disappointed about the chow fun. They felt the quality and taste wasn't the same as before. I thought the chicken katsu was like how it's always been, but as for the chow fun, I did feel the same. I added more pepper on it for more flavor and a little shoyu too. I entered at 7:25pm and ordered a loco moco plate and the daily Tuesday special turkey with stuffing. It wasn't that busy with maybe 3 couples before me but it took about 35 minutes to get my food. There was only 1 chef and 1 cashier taking orders. My turkey was nothing special, turkey was so so and had one bone inside. The mac salad was small and the Asian cold slaw was terrible, too sour! Overall plate was too small of a portion for a regular plate costing $16. I don't recommend this place and not going back. Sorry I didn't take any pictures because I didn't want to waste my time since I'm not going back. I love this place! It's been awhile since I ate here. I've been living in Las Vegas for 20+ years and before I left there were at least 4 places to eat. I went back home a couple years ago and the only one open is in Honolulu. I eat their Chicken Katsu plate when I go back to visit! They also used to have really good Hamburger Steak plate. They also used to have good Sweet Sour Spareribs, but since I only have short stays in Hawaii I always go for my Chicken Katsu. The only thing about the Honolulu one is that was the first one they opened and it's a pretty runner down place, but the food there is still good. Paid $1.50 for extra chow fun and this is what I got. Prices have gone up and the quality has gone down, don't enjoy chicken Katsu that has been pre-cooked then thrown in the fryer to heat up. Grace's Inn - Off Night for the Adobo We've been longtime customers at Grace's Inn and usually enjoy their food, but this recent visit was disappointing. We picked up three regular chicken adobo plates around 6:30 PM for about $51. The chicken was dry, lacked moisture, and worst of all--it didn't even taste like adobo. No vinegar flavor, no richness, just bland and dry. We've had much better from them before, so this might've just been a bad batch--but it was bad enough that we couldn't finish our plates. Ordering in person can b frustrating because the counter service is not clearly marked and I was in line at one register while a later customer came in and stood at the other register. She took him first and I moved to his side within a foot of him to make it known I was next. Counter help didn't even notice. I ordered $85 worth of plates and the customer in front ordered one plate. Then I noticed there was a QR code in the counter and I didn't see it on the Yelp site otherwise I wld have ordered online so I didn't have to wait 20 minutes in store for my order. My dad used to take us to Grace's Inn in on Beretania Street all the time when I was a little kid. Needless to say I have a lot of nostalgia coming here. My favorites were Shoyu chicken, chicken Katsu, and the fried noodles! So good!!! It's been a while since I've been here, but we were craving plate lunches. Shoyu chicken is only offered on certain days as a special. I have to say this is my favorite place for plate lunches. Grace's Inn used to have a few locations, but I believe the one on Beretania Street next to Times supermarket is the only one left. They had a location in Aiea next to Dave's ice cream but that closed. There also used to be a location in the market city shops we're Foodland is, but that location is gone as well replace by L&L Drive in. I'm kind of sad about that. Anyway, we ordered the chicken Katsu plate lunch and the fried noodle plate. My daughter loved the fried noodles! She sucked it down in just a few minutes. Ha ha! You can't go wrong with any loco moco variant...and their Corned Beef Hash Loco Moco this morning (takeout on 16.May.2021 @0840) was pretty good. Ordered two plates and they provide a bag, thouth without handles. Utensils included with miscellaneous condiments. Fried Rice with Two Eggs was eggcellent...just had to. Used to go Grace's all the time. Been a little while, and not sure what happened, but not the same. Costs increased, quality decreased. Ordered the Chicken Katsu, which used to be my go-to order. I like my chicken dry, but this was waaaay dry. So cooked that the chicken was thinner than the sides of batter. The chow fun also used to be winnahs...it also looked dried out. I wonder if I got someone's meal that didn't get picked up the day before and they just nuked it? Overall so disappointing. If I ate in, I would have taken it back. But I did take out which I've done many times before, so I know that's not the reason it was terrible. Why 2 stars? Ordered Chx Katsu regular, had to actually choose my own two sides (didn't care for dat) and Kim chi was one of the options..... no longer auto- free. Price was steep, portions were very controlled using covered plastic ramekins. Food was very good, however a regular from 10 years ago ain't even close portion-wise to today. Essentially, it was $15 for a to go chx katsu w/ two sides. I absolutely loved me some Graces really, really often back in the day. Miss the water pitcher on counter, the tray of Kim chi sitting out for , how they used to ask, "chow fun or no". This will be my last visit to this place. No dis on them but just too costly. I finally had a chance to come to town and eat my favorite dish from Grace's!! It's located in the same shopping center as Times and near Safeway. It's in a congested area and traffic can get hectic. The parking lot is shared spaced with Times and some other smaller shops so I can imagine finding parking would be hard during busy hours. Their dinning area is clean and has dividers up where you can enjoy your meal. The way they setup the ordering and pickup area can cause some confusion for the patrons and there aren't any markers on the floor or signs up encouraging the distancing between customers. The menu hasn't changed and their prices, WOW!! Cheap eats!! I had their famous chicken katsu, regular, and my son had the regular hamburger steak all for $23 (including a large drink). I can't remember when was the last time I could get a meal for 2 and a drink for that price!! It tasted the same but their Katsu sauce tasted a little different. The food came out pretty darn fast. The only thing that killed my experience was the 2 women's attitude when helping customers. All and all, my food tasted the okay. read more

Ordered chicken katsu locomoco for the first time this week. Price was reasonable but only one piece of chicken. Unfortunately, tasted burnt. Maybe time to change the oil in the deep fryer? Big disappointment. Also ordered side order French fries and side order chow funny. Both were good. Glad it was the crinkle cut. Probably won't order katsu anymore. I'll try a different Loco Moco. Five stars. The classic chicken katsu plate is highly recommended. On this expedition to Grace's Inn, called in the order to minimize the wait with what's going on in the world nowadays. Got there and one person in front of me, no one else. Paid for my food and waited a little bit. One other person came in to pick up their order and left. Only had to wait a little bit and the order came out. Another person was after me but I got to split pretty quickly. The owner, Grace, was there and have a friendly hello and thank you for coming in to support. It's great to have that in these trying times. Makes one day much better! Had the chicken katsu plate. Great as ever! The chicken katsu was fresh and delicious. I had the Asian cole slaw and it was tangy and ono. The chow fun underneath the katsu was fresh and juicy, not dry at all. The white rice was perfect and the sauce and Kim Chee was excellent as ever. The food was nice and hot too. Prices increases! $12.75 Reg Chicken Katsu $3.25 for Side Fries I wouldn't have minded paying this price if the portion quality was better. I've been coming to Graces since I was a kid but the quality has been going downhill over the years. Today's katsu was not fried fresh. We got our food and ate it in the car since my toddler was starving. It was cold. Not room temp.. cold. Fries which were in a sandwich size bag was only 1/3 full. They used to fill the entire bag before Covid and I know this because Katsu and a side fries has been our go-to order any time we went to Ala moana beach. Good news is they do take Apple Pay! This worked out for us since I forgot my wallet today. However, the staff doesn't know how to use the machine. It took a good 5 min and 4 employees to figure out if the charge went through or not.
