I've been wanting to try Graeter's Ice Cream for awhile now, and got the chance when I was in Columbus over the weekend. The ice cream shop is pretty big, there are tons of tables there for big groups. There were about four or five ladies working here, and one guy. Everyone was so super friendly! There is a good selection of ice cream flavors offered. Plus, sorbet as well as seasonal ice creams. I tried the cookies and cream ice cream and one other but I forgot what it was. Both flavors were good. The explained to me that their cookies and cream has real oreos in it. LOL. I don't think that matters to me, but it was nice to know. The ice cream at Graeter's is good. As in, most of the time, ice cream is good unless it gets freezer burned. So I enjoyed my regular cookies and cream ice cream. Although, since the store is so popular with people, I had higher expectations for this place. Alas, it's not a place I would go out of the way for since there isn't really something that makes it stand out. I'm used to having weird ice cream flavors like, Brown Brown Bread (Grapenuts), Blueberry Lavender, Maple Chai and Banana, Earl Grey Honey, Red Velvet, or even Bourbon where I've from. I guess I should take my butt to Jeni's Ice Cream to try them out! If you've had Dryer's, Edy's, Breyer's, or even Blue Bunny, you can say that you've also had Graeter's. They make all of their own ice cream as well as their cones right in the store. There are a large variety of flavors as well as sherbet too. The Buckeye Blitz is by far my favorite, unique flavor and is a must if you want a true Ohio flavor. I was introduced to Graeters when visiting Cincinnati on business from the locals I worked with. Wow! was my response! Over the years I was fortunate enough to be on the receiving end of some mail ordered 6 pack pints, which I loved. More recently I could find them at Quik Chek convenience stores in NJ, but then they seemed to disappear from the shelves. The Graeters FB page suggested I try Wegmans or Whole Paycheck (er, Foods), and I found a few different pints in my local Whole Paycheck (er, Foods). $6.99 later, I was enjoyed a pint of black raspberry chocolate chip (which really should be renamed chocolate shards). I'm not sure how much Whole Paycheck (er, Foods) marks it up because it was only $5.99 at Quik Chek. While I appreciate the artisinal nature of Jeni's Ice Cream, Graeters is straight up. down home, fabulous-flavored ice cream of the purist nature. I don't think the two should be compared. As for the corporatization of the company, plenty of locals lay claim to Graeters as their own, but it is actually a chain based out of Cincinnati. No bother... I will review it anyhow. Simply put- I am a slobbering fool when it comes to the Cookies and Cream, which is my absolute favorite. My husband loves the mint chocolate chip and plenty of friends go batty over some of the seasonal flavors, like cinnamon or peach. The ice cream and sorbet offerings are almost all the same across the stores, but it is the general ambiance that differentiates the shops from one another. Some Graeters are a lot bigger than others, but many (at least here in Columbus) have that old-fashioned ice cream parlor feel to them. I am a bit of a purist when it comes to defining the atmosphere of a place and struggle to call this an old-fashioned soda fountain, because it's not. However, plenty of Graeters have a nice throw-back feel to them, which is enough to invoke a slight nostalgia. I'm OK with the ice cream parlor experience Graeters provides- if that's what you want. I just go for the double scoop of Cookies & Cream! The Upper Arlington Graeters is small, with a handful of tables and outdoor seating area. I recommend avoiding it when you see hoards of little leaguers crowded on the front patio. Chances are the inside is packed and the lines are long. Other than that, it is usually a quick in and out. Graeters not only sells cones, sorbets and sundaes with all the usual toppings, but you can carry out ice cream by the pints, quarts and even in perfect little single servings. It's a great little ice cream shop and I recommend it to anyone looking for the traditional ice cream cone. read more

The Lane Avenue retail strip this place is near has a hotel, a mall, a restaurant, a Whole Foods, residential areas, and a stupidly redone parallel parking/one lane of traffic in each direction layout. Drive at your own risk. Inside, a fairly tame, run of the mill ice cream store - cooler with take away pints, cakes, and chipwiches...metal backed chairs and small tables. Outside, a large brick patio area for good weather days. The draw, though, is the fantastic Cincinnati brand Graeter's ice cream. Raspberry chocolate chunk had become so popular, most fine dining restaurants in Columbus serve it alongside their desserts. I'm not going to go through their flavor list...go online and check it out for seasonal specials or limited runs. Is Jeni's better? Depends. Do you like spending ten dollars for a pint? Me neither. Graeters is a solid premium ice cream brand and this location is an excellent suburban place to buy it. Eat up. Since the short lived Ben & Jerrys that had been on Lane Avenue folded, this is the go to ice cream place for Upper Arlington and northwest Columbus/campus area. Get a larger size than what you're thinking...it's not that much more expensive, it saves you getting back in line, and you only go around this topsy turvy merry go round once. read more

If you want good old fashioned ice cream flavors that are consistently excellent, Graeter's is the place to go. Of all the Graeter's locations in Columbus, I really like this Upper Arlington location the best. I'm not sure why, but the line here consistently moves faster than the Graeter's on Bethel Rd or their store in Westerville. Their outdoor seating area is great too, and they do dog days with free frozen puppy treats once a month during the summer months. Fabulous local ice cream tradition. A nice selection of flavors including all the usual suspects as well as a few unique to Graeter's. They specialize in chocolate chip flavors. I enjoyed the coconut chocolate chip in a waffle cone. The ice cream had the perfect texture and mouth feel. The coconut flavor was distinct but not overpowering as is sometimes the case. The semisweet dark chocolate chips were the perfect addition. My wife enjoyed the peanut butter chocolate chip and remarked that the flavor was nicely balanced. Our dogs were with us and we were pleased to see that they had Frosty Paws available for the canine set. We were able to sit in the courtyard in front of the store with them. read more

Graeter's has a private parking lot, indoor seating, and outdoor "seating" which is my favorite. You're just sitting on a bunch of curved benches on a balmy summer night eating delicious cold ice cream amongst a bunch of happy strangers and sometimes dogs. Chunks!! We couldn't believe it either. We were told to expect big chunks in our ice cream, but these were outrageously huge chunks. I got strawberry chocolate chip, and it's almost a misnomer because these are not "chocolate chips" but rather gigantic, burly chips broken off of a large slab of chocolate. There was one chunk that was so large it covered the entire bottom of my cup. The Child loves ice cream. She knows I like ice cream and that my standards are pretty high when it comes to eating ice cream, i.e. I don't eat just any ice cream. So she and mom suggested this place for dessert. I had a triple scoop with chocolate chip, toffee chocolate chip, and chocolate chip cookie dough. (I know...adventurous. ) While I was not a fan of the gigantic chocolate pieces in the chocolate chip variety, the cookie dough and toffee varieties were delicious. Wow. That's all I can say. I'm still thinking about this ice cream and considering going back to Ohio just to get it. The ice cream is so creamy, almost like frozen custard. And their flavors- oh boy they do not skimp out. If you get cookie dough or oreo, expect huge chunks of cookie dough and close to whole oreos in the ice cream. It's a pretty fantastic experience. I got a scoop of their famous black raspberry (it's famous for a reason, trust me just get it) and a peanut butter chocolate ice cream with peanut butter cookie dough chunks in it. Great fresh ice cream with classic flavors and sorbets and some flavors that change with the season. Their chocolate chips are homemade and included in about half the flavors, so I definitely recommend getting a scoop of something that includes their chocolate chips. There was a long line when we came in but it moved quickly and everyone working and in line was very friendly. Their parking lot was full but we found parking on the side street pretty easily. I'm a huge Graeter's fan and have been since I moved to Columbus so many years ago. In my opinion, nothing beats their black raspberry chocolate chip, and I use the term chip loosely, because you'll either wind up with a chip or half a chocolate bar. I used to eat a pint of Graeter's ice cream every other day at the end of my senior year of high school, and I don't know how I didn't blow up. Most of their flavors are pretty tasty, and my girlfriend loves the mint chocolate chip (too bad it's not still green). They also have plenty of seasonal flavors like pumpkin and peppermint stick that are super tasty. It's really hard for me to pass up on the chocolate dipped waffle cones; they're just too good, and it deceptively forces me to get an extra scoop. This particular location is the closest to my house, and the people working there are all very friendly and are willing to let you try all of the flavors they have there. There's also some outdoor seating which is great in the Summer time, and some of the other locations don't have this. Also, they serve gelato now, which is a little healthier alternative to the classic flavors. Obviously when people talk about Columbus and ice cream, their minds have been trained to think of Jeni's, but mine will always go to Graeter's (even though it's not technically local). read more

Staff was so welcoming and friendly. I love when staff is and shows they are interested in you not just as a customer but as a person and the three girls manning the counter today were amazing. What more do I have to say than the fact that it's Graeter's? Already, their ice cream is some of the best that I've ever had, and they're very open to giving out free samples as well. I didn't even have to bring it up myself - one of the servers straight-up asked me if I wanted to try any of their flavors, which I did. Many, many flavors. I also like that they have pre-designed ice cream sundaes, but you can go for build-your-own if none of those options suit you. However, I will say that if you get their 1870 Tower, your taste buds will be ice-screaming for more. Graeter's black raspberry chip ice cream is completely on point, and while I'd default to a coffee-flavored ice cream at almost any other store, I insist on getting the black raspberry chip when I come to Graeter's because it's THAT good. It's even worth the ridiculous price of about $4 for a single scoop. They also have three low-glycemic option, which surprisingly are just as tasty as their regular versions, but you don't feel as guilty because there's not as much sugar in it. read more

Ohio is really lucky...we have so many options for really good ice cream. Luckily for me I have a Jeni's one mile south of me, and a Graeter's one mile north of me. I like Jeni's for more interesting flavors, but when I want some good ole regular ice cream or a sundae, you cannot beat Graeter's! Since their pints are easily available in grocery stores and not super expensive, I buy those a lot. Usually my go-to pint is chocolate chip cookie dough. No one makes a better cookie dough ice cream than Graeter's. Ben & Jerry's who? Don't worry B&J, I still like you too :) It's not uncommon to find a chunk of chocolate in their ice cream the size of your palm. I'm pretty sure it's under their rules when packing ice cream that there must be at least 1-2 palm size chunks in every container. The palm size chocolate chunk is not even an exaggeration. The Buckeye Sundae is an absolute must. Peanut butter ice cream with chocolate chunks, whipped cream, fudge sauce, whipped cream, sprinkles (or jimmies as some like to call them), and a cherry. It is my favorite ice cream treat of all time. I typically get an ice cream sandwich or two to go now since they've started selling them. Two chocolate chip cookies with ice cream in between...always a great idea, but Graeter's makes them even better!! I like the Black Raspberry option for the sandwich, but they also sell vanilla and chocolate. Since they also sell some candy, might want to pick up a chocolate bar while you're at it...they so nice and creamy! I love the old fashioned look inside Graeter's stores...they remind me of an ice cream parlor I used to visit in Granville as a child that has since closed. read more
