These guys are, without question, reliable. I found an old typewriter in MO. I brought it in thinking it would be good to give it an overhaul. Fortunately the owner, Mr. Schweitzer, informed me the overhaul would cost more or as much as the typewriter itself so not really necessary since it was in good working order. Not an insult to my typewriter since it isn't worth a lot but he would perform the job if I really wanted him to. I appreciated his honesty and pragmatism. These are really good guys. Gems really. Went in for a diagnostic check of my recently purchased 1950s Olympia machine. The owner looked at it and honestly told me it needed no service. Just needed a new ribbon which he sold me for a great price! I had my 1 year old in tow and they were very accommodating considering their space is very small. Best place to rent a typewriter in NYC. 1 month is about $100. They have a variety of different vintage typewriters that are in great shape and work perfectly. They are very nice and helpful and will spend time talking to you and showing you how to use the machine. Apparently they also service many other typewriter repair stores in the area and around the country, so if you go elsewhere, they may be doing the work for you. They also service printers and do a lot of HP printer repair business. read more

I was looking to purchase my first typewriter. Paul helped me out and was very accommodating. The shop is very small but I was amazed by all environment and all the typewriters on display. I ended up picking up a 1970 Olympia and love it ! Paul was very helpful and showed me the ins and outs of this. I wish I had more reasons to buy vintage typewriters. The service is as described, totally helpful and conscientious. And it's an experience just to go there -- like a museum of beautiful old machines, except that these typewriters are in perfect working order (and quite likely more reliable than almost anything made today). Plus new ribbons are available for sale, no problem. It's hard to imagine there's another such shop in all of the U.S., but I'm so happy to find this unique place in the heart of Manhattan -- it's been passed from father to son for three generations. read more

The issue isn't that they did a bad job. Not at all. When I took it in, My 1912 Underwood Standard No. 5 was a hunk of iron and rust, couldn't even see the keys, but most of the mechanics still worked (those are some reliable typewriters). My spouse got a quote of $225 to clean it, $425 to restore it (these numbers are more than a Underwood 5 are worth, but it was a family item, so it is what it is.) Then one of them opened it, called us, and said it would be closer to a grand to restore, we said just clean it, price was still at $225 last we were told, and I wasn't surprised, they're really common typewriters some assume they clean many of them and know what they're doing. Expecting it to cost what he quoted, we were surprised to find out that he made the executive decision without even thinking to *ask* us to do some repair work that cost another $75. I have no idea what that work was or why he decided to do it, because it wasn't itemized and no one from the shop ever called to ask if he could do anything on top of what we asked for. It was like a slow mugging, we got a call, he said it was ready then told us it would cost $325. I was floored, you don't just make that call with someone else's money, you stay in budget or inform the customer! So my spouse picked it up. They put a ribbon on it, and it looks much much better (I expected nothing but a cool showpiece anyway), but it's still only partially working, just like when we took it in, with he same problems, other than its clean now, so I can only assume he just decided since we wanted a cleaning, and that cleaning ended up fixing a few little issues, to charge it as a repair. Smh. I would not recommend this place if you want to make any decisions or stay in budget. Basically, proceed with caution. read more

One of the neatest shops I've ever visited. Located on the fourth floor, their inconspicuous doorway opens to reveal shelves crowded with typewriters of all kinds, with typewriter memorabilia hanging on the walls. I brought my portable typewriter here for a basic clean up/tune up, and these fellows did a fantastic job. My typewriter looks (and writes) like new! They also gave me several helpful tips on how to better use my machine. You should also know that they don't just repair typewriters - they have several shelves worth of beautifully restored and fully functional machines to buy. Bought my first typewriter here (an IBM Selectric III). Both Jay and Paul were great. Very patient and went over all the features and tricks of the typewriter. They even explained some quirks, what to watch for and normal maintenance of the typewriter (how to install the ribbon, the correction tape, etc). Fantastic service!
