"Mi abuela está enferma": you may remember this from your Spanish textbooks. It does sum up the Gramma Mora experience. I love Mexican food, so I eat here about once every two years to see if it has improved. After this evening's "feast," I can say it is the same: at best, boring and mediocre; at worst, stale/spoiled or gross. The service is fine for courtesy and attentiveness. The food is lacking, in both ingredients and preparations. Their "Mexican rice" tastes catsuppy. My pork was grey and greasy; I could barely eat it. Chicken dishes consumed by others in my group appeared similarly stringy and non-fresh. Enchiladas were served with key ingredients sitting atop the tortillas rather than folded inside. It would be nice if the Hertel strip could boast of decent Mexican food, like Transit Road now that it has La Tolteca (which I would give 3 or 4 stars compared to Gramma's 2). In the meantime, I would avoid Gramma Mora's for all but the simplest quesadillas and cold beer, provided that you are in the mood for kitschy México-para-gringos décor. read more

Hertel Ave bars and restaurants can be very busy on a weeknight during the summertime, particularly those with patios. Between everyone socializing after their soccer and kickball leagues and those watching the World Cup soccer games, you can be hard pressed to find a patio along Hertel that isn't jammed full of people. So when a friend and I were looking for a place to go for a quick bite and a drink we decided on giving Gramma Mora's a try...they're never busy...besides, a margarita sounded like a good idea on a hot night. In the past I haven't been too impressed with Gramma Mora's, but I thought that it was time that I give the place another try. Sadly this visit reinforced my previous experiences here. I ordered a couple different versions of a bean taco and a salted margarita on the rocks While we were waiting for our food to arrive we munched on a basket of complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were not partially good...but not bad either. The salsa was just a poor excuse for salsa. Very thin and runny, with no visible vegetables or herbs. Sure it's free, but shouldn't a Mexican restaurant strive to have memorable salsa (memorable for the right reasons)? The margarita was hands down the worst I've ever had. I'm not sure how or why that is, but it had a weird flavor reminiscent of dirty water. Granted I just ordered a house margarita, but I don't think that the quality of the tequila was necessarily the issue. The taste was off and it was not at all refreshing. Needless to say I stopped at one. Our food came out in a reasonable amount of time. I can't remember what my friend had, but neither of us were too impressed with our food. My tacos were bland and altogether underwhelming. Blah. A real disappointment. Sadly it seems that they really don't have a great reputation for having good food. When I mentioned to a couple friends (on different occasions) that I recently went to Grandma Mora's they both had a very similar response - Does it still suck? In my opinion, perhaps one of the most disappointing things about this place is that it's at a prime location on Hertel Avenue where the restaurant scene is really emerging. Hertel offers all types of quality meal options at every spectrum of cost and value. Unfortunately Grandma Mora's hasn't done much of anything to improve their food and to retain patrons. This area could really use a restaurant that serves excellent Mexican style food. Grandma needs to either step up her game or make room to let a new generation in. This was seriously the worst restaurant, let alone the worst Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. I couldn't tell if the salsa was created using rotting vegetables or if it was ketchup mixed with water - there was nary a solid vegetable to be found in the cup. I ordered the green enchiladas with rice. You also had the option of ordering "sopa" as a side, which contrary to what anyone whose taken Spanish 101 would think is NOT soup, it's spaghetti or angel hair noodles mixed with the aforementioned "salsa" and heated up (the menu says lightly fried, but I would guess it's more like "lightly microwaved). I actually did wind up ordering the sopa in addition to the rice because it sounded slightly intriguing. It was not. The green enchiladas main ingredient was not chicken, or tortillas or even sauce, but cheese. Lots of cheese. I really, really like cheese and this was way too much cheese. The least abundant ingredient was chicken and the few pieces I managed to come across were gristled. The rice was mush and had no flavor. I had no complaint of the service or the drinks -- it's the food. It's just awful. I don't know how they call this a Mexican restaurant. It's more like "Obese midwestern woman learning how to cook Mexican food via the Campbells soup cookbook". It's really that bad. read more

Let's see if this stands up to a Texan's discerning taste in Mexican food... We came in late, about an hour before they closed. No hostess, but the bartender seated us quickly. The bar was full, but only one other table was occupied. Menus, chips and salsa, and drinks were brought quickly. We ordered the cheese enchilada dinner and chorizo chimichanga. The chips don't seem home made, they're very forgettable. Salsa is very smooth, very little texture. Spicy, acidic, with a good bit of cilantro. Definitely seems home made. Food came quickly. The chimi was about 3/4ths the size of other places, and incorrect (chicken came instead of chorizo). The enchiladas were decent sized, but who fills cheese enchiladas with onions? Gramma Morras does. And they don't mention it in the description, so it made the entire dish difficult to enjoy. The correct chimi was brought out after I notified our server, and I took the chicken home with me. Overall, the food was so/so. The Texan was not impressed. Started out by being brought chips and salsa, which is usual in most American Mexican restaurants. The chips were stale and over fried, the salsa was a tomato puree with no chunks of anything in it but was absolutely loaded with salt, waiting for main course to continue and hopefully change the pace of this review. I have gone here plenty of times for many years. Today was the was the worst visit ever. Attempted to call ahead for a pick up order. I was hung up on twice. Finally got through and placed my order. Picked it up only to find that they only had kid size to go cups for drinks. I asked 2 sides of Sopa and they just threw a bunch in one container. The Mexican pizza was sub par from it's usual. This place is nice. But food lacks seasoning, and when it isn't bad its wrong, they use Frank's red hot as a hot sauce. They also use imitation crab rather than real crab. The price's ate high for the food quality. This place needs Gordon Ramsey. :) but its not terrible. We were treated well but this is the second time I've been and I wouldn't recommend this place. How is this place still open? After previous dining experiences at Gramma Mora's being bland and over priced we hadn't been here in about four years. A strong margarita craving and only one Mexican restaurant on Hertel brought us in today. Positives - the service was great. Joanna was very friendly and responsive. The Coronas were good. The not so Positives - the food. Its terrible. Our quesadilla was missing ingredients advertised on the menu. It also tasted like american cheese was the main cheese. Yuck. The margaritas, also terrible. You cant taste the tequila and they taste like watered down sour mix served in a pint glass. I love Hertel and dining local. But I will try to remember my experience today the next time I am craving a margarita...and go someplace else. read more

I have to say i'm not fully impressed with the margs, my second one was better than my first. i have eaten here in the past and never had any complaints that i recall. My friend did have some chips and salsa and said she didn't care for the salsa but i'm not sure what it was like since i didn't try it. We came in for just a few drinks, i did not care for the first margarita the bartender made for me, it was very sweet. He overheard me say that i wasn't enjoying it and he brought over a different one that was a bit better, not a sweet but spicy! kinda cool! I'm giving this a 4 star because of the service. I didn't want to complain about my drink because it was not horrible i just didn't liek it but i thought it was very good customer service since he made me a new one without me even asking. read more

Been here for lunch several times. Always had a great lunch experience. friendly staff, good portions, nice lunch combos. Mexican sauces sufficiently spicy, ingridients always fresh, food always hot where is should be hot and cold where it should be cold. Seems to be a pretty popular lunch diestination as it was always full when i've gone there. LOVE the Sopa. Parking can be tricky as they don't have a lot, and a lot of Hertel Ave. is pay to park suring the day, but there are free lots if staying less than 2 hours, and an abundance of side streets near by that are reasonably vacant during the week while people are at work. read more

I am Mexican-American from San Antonio, Texas...I know Mexican food. Where do I start? The salsa tasted/looked like Italian tomato sauce, ketchup with pickled jalapenos thrown in. The tortillas were not fresh. Disgusting. It tasted like nothing I have ever had. What part of Mexico was this type of food supposed to be from? For all the hype Gramma Mora's had when I moved to the North Buffalo area, it hasn't kept up with the quality. The food is acceptable, but nothing that 'wows' me or my husband. I was very disappointed in Gramma Mora's. We went there on Sunday, Cinco de Mayo, specifically for the seafood enchiladas, but they only had a limited menu which was OK since it was a special occasion, even though other places I have been on Cinco de Mayo had their regular menu. The biggest problem was with the 3 margaritas that cost us over $27. These were regular margaritas on the rocks not a special flavor. We did not ask if they had a special but I would think the waitress would let us know. I am not sure if they increased the price for Cinco de Mayo or that is their regular price but I don't think I will be going back. We were happy with the service even though we had to ask for chips and salsa. read more

We went here for dinner last night and left totally disappointed. The nachos supreme was terrible, microwaved shredded cheddar cheese with very little toppings and overly salty chips. An extra upcharge for shredded cheese on their 3 taco deal. The queso burrito had rubbery chicken. Nothing came with sour cream. Nothing seemed fresh or authentic. My friend and I stopped in for lunch on May 19th for lunch. The restaurant was just opening and we were the only ones there, which made for a nice quiet atmosphere and a friendly rapport with our server (her name escapes me at the moment, sorry!). She brought us chips and the homemade salsa while we waited. The chips were light and crisp and seemed homemade. The salsa was less chunky than I'm used to, but full-bodied with flavor. A great warm-up to my main course of a Mexican Pizza Quesadilla. The tortillas contained four melted cheeses and chicken along with tomatoes, onions, and salsa, which was a fantastic combination of flavors. The grilled tortillas also had a nice crunch to them. The staff at this place were awful - first we were told we all (3 of us) had to order three separate meals (the NYS alcohol and eating out law DOES NOT say that) and second, we had just finished and were immediately asked if we could leave because people were waiting for the outside tables (and there were a ton of empty tables inside), even though two outside tables were empty - the staff said they were reserved for others - so what? Our server Lydia was legitimately the best server I've ever encountered. So friendly, the suggestive selling was on POINT! She recommended "the carnitas" special and it was absolutely delicious. I was very disappointed. I don't know what's going on in the kitchen, but this place is very mediocre. My guess is they have someone white back there cooking. The food was very bland. I had to drown it in hot sauce to even taste anything. The "salsa" that came with the chip was more like a tomato sauce. The rice and beans don't have any taste and you get a very chuncky "pico de gallo". I ordered the chorizo chimichanga and I swear they gave me ground beef. I don't think they know what chorizo is lol. Also every other Mexican place I've been to always has a white cheese sauce to go over the chimichanga, nothing here. Very disappointed to say the least. Grandma Morra I wish I came here 100yrs ago! Went to a medium sized mexican restaurant on Hertal Ave called Grandma Morra's, and I have to say I was not pleased. According to the menu, Grandma Morra's is over 100 years old and was established by the Morra family. I really wish I could have had the food 100 years ago, because what we had last night was not authentic Mexican. The decor of the restaurant was nice, but it went south with the chips and salsa. The salsa was not salsa, but instead marinara sauce and some "salsa." Then the music, while I love Adele, I do not want to hear her entire album in an "authentic Mexican" restaurant. Moreover, they did not have any habanero sauce! My favorite meal when I go to a Mexican restaurant is Chicken Chimichanga with frijoles...granted chimichanga is not an authentic Mexican dish. However, I have had some realllllllllllyyyyy good Chimigangas and the one I had at Grandma Morra's was not. The chicken was definitely canned cube chicken. The chimi was not covered in the yummy cheesy delight, and there was not flavor. I went with three other people and they voiced that their meals were relatively okay, but not really Mexican. This is the first restaurant that I am not going to recommend and I was really excited about going. If you still want to check it out the address is 1465 Hertel Ave, Buffalo, NY. If I could give this place no stars I would. From the start the service was horrible. The waiters asked us to get our drinks and if we were ready to order but kept forgetting to bring our menus. When we finally were able to order our food took forever to get to our table even though we were the only people at the restaurant. This a great place to go with a group of friends for drinks and great food. They offer Margaritas in a variety of flavors and the service is quick and professional. Beware that parking isn't always the easiest and last time I spent almost an hour finding a spot. If your the type of person that watches what they eat you won't find many healthy options. While the food is good it can served too hot and messy on occasion. However this is the type of establishment that you'll keep coming back to and I would recommend it to others. read more

The complementary chips and salsa were decent. I ordered the Gramma Mora's special with chicken and enjoyed the spiciness! My friend got the steak fajitas which came out sizzlin and smelled really good. He said they were good and I would take his word for it! Not great but not horrible. I was charged double during restaurant week. Ordered TWO of the taco dinner specials they had listed online. Waitress claimed that one special was only one taco dinner to share when the restaurant week menu clearly said TWO taco dinners. The regular taco dinner on the menu comes with TWO tacos, not one. So I was charged $20.18 for half of what I should have received. Probably won't go back any time soon. read more

When I can't remember why I haven't been here in a while it quickly comes to me when I receive my order. I ordered steak fajitas. They are served on a cold plate, not in a sizzling skillet like everywhere else on the planet, with cold tortilla shells. The food is more authentic at an Applebees. My steak came out cold and when I tried to chew it I actually hurt my jaw. I sent it back and the waitress was really sweet about it. She promptly brought out fresh steak for me which was equally terrible, but at least it was hot. I tried one piece, I didn't eat the rest, and I didn't request that it be removed from my bill because I felt bad for her. When I told her it tasted microwaved she informed me the steak is precooked and in the cooler and gets heated up. Mmmmm... $16 microwave meal... My daughter had a chicken finger and fry meal. It was great. Fries were fresh cut. They seem a little more suited to make this sort of fast food. The service is stellar but would be better if they weren't running a summer Friday dinner rush with only one waitress on the patio. The manager (Vinnie?) is condescending and rude to his employees in front of customers. And is also THE worst bartender on Hertel Ave.. Don't even think about getting a drink unless you are, or know, one of his buddies at the bar. read more

WAIT, NO, STOP!!!!!!!!!!!! The food is OK.... The CHAOS is REAL. Placed an order for three dinners with sides and appetizers. My bill was in the $70 range. They said it would take 1/2 hr. I was running late by 15min. I waited an extra 1/2 hr. One waitress on a weekend with two tables and nothing but chaos. When the order came out I pointed out that an item was missing and she corrected it , then she came back and something else was missing. Now I'm cranky. When I got it home one dinner had no sides.
