My wife and I were very fortunate to be able to get a reservation at this outstanding restaurant. Megan greeted us so warmly when we arrived with a big smile and conversation. She remembered that I called and left a voicemail to confirm my reservations and she called me back to confirm. That was just the beginning of a great evening. Our table was ready even though we came 40 minutes early. The restaurant was beautifully decorated and spotless with very classy background music. Samatha, our table hostess, was so right with her recommendations. She was well informed, gracious, attentive and helpful. We enjoyed speaking with her about all of our tasting dishes. I am so glad we tried this restaurant out. We came for our anniversary and it did not disappoint! The atmosphere was quiet (we would never bring our kids here), all the food was amazing starting w the bread down to dessert. I ordered the scallops and it was just as I hoped it would be. Full of flavor! What's great is the liquor store right across the street, so you can get your wine. We ate like kings and queens, and I was shocked at how low our bill was. We go to Cape May a few times a year, often eating at the Washington Inn. This time we decided to branch out and try something new. Grana BYOB had great reviews so that's where we went. Two difficulties: getting a reservation and having done that, finding a parking space (street only). But then the reward. The place has a comfortable small room setting. We got a corner table in a back room with only a few other tables. Nice and quiet. Then came the food decisions. The tasting menu looked great but so did the a la carte selections--we went with the latter. For starters I had the Jersey Tomato and Goat Cheese Salad; second course the Casarecce (Rock shrimp with home made pasta, broccoli rabe and roasted peppers); third course Roasted Halibut; and finally some Pistachio ice cream. What a fantastic meal! So our outing was a success. We all loved our meals, the service and the ambiance. We will definitely be back. read more

Besides being plated beautifully and having different levels of wonderful taste, full of flavor - we loved the fact that the kitchen plated our shared dishes perfectly. To start we ordered the Beet and Burrata Salad to share, and they plated it separately, perfectly. For our main course we shared the Rib Eye (Chef's Special). Again, split beautifully on two plates and delicious. The desert was outstanding, a warm bread pudding with homemade vanilla ice cream topped with a lovely garnish of a specialty mint microgreens. Our waiter RJ, was very knowledgeable, experienced, very nice and funny, and gave us just the right amount of privacy and time to order and catch up with our friends. The ambiance was what we expected from a white tablecloth dining experience. Our only negative comment is about the hostess who was a bit rough around the edges, not very personable but did take the time to explain their irritating reservation policy. This negative experience was totally offset by their policy of Not Charging for shared dishes, which we totally appreciated and again, were plated so beautifully! We believe reservations are a must here in the summertime due to their excellent Food, Service, and Ambiance. From the get go our waitress was a bit stiff and mechanical. Seemed bored and spoke as if reciting a monologue. When we asked if there were any toothpicks, she said "yes, at the front desk". Maybe it is just me, but I would have thought she would have brought them to us, instead of my husband having to get up and get them. This could be picky. That said, the food was just "meh", kind of bland. The rigatoni was way over cooked and mushy. The scallops were only seared on one side, should have been both, if cooked properly. The steak was not cooked to my husband's request. I would think twice about going back. Went to Grana last Friday evening. It was our as well as our friends first time. It won't be the last! Appetizers were tuna tartare and NE Clam Chowder. Main courses were fluke stuffed with crabmeat and salmon. Creme brûlée, flourless brownie and chocolate panna cotta were our deserts, delicious! Our server had a great personality and was there when we needed her but not intrusive. Many restaurants in Cape May are awfully noisy. Grana was much quieter than most, you could actually have a conversation without raising your voice. We look forward to returning! read more

Shame this place doesn't have more reviews, it's really good! I would recommend coming here, it's a nice intimate atmosphere and the food is very well prepared. Probably the best Italian in Cape May! My server, I forget her name, was a shorter woman who was semi-new I believe. She was fantastic! I ate dinner with my father who is disabled and in a wheelchair and the staff did everything to accommodate him. My dad started to talk to the waitress about some octopus documentary, which is embarrassing as a 25 year old, but the server handled it with grace! Really great service, really great food. We went to Grana for dinner for my birthday, and all the food was amazing! We did do the a la carte menu, but everything was so good that I am very interested in doing the chef's tasting menu in the future. Service was also excellent! We ordered the tuna tartar to share (which they divided into 2 plates which was nice!). I ordered the scallops and crab risotto and my boyfriend got the wagyu steak- both were absolutely delicious. First tip: make reservations. I heard that this place was booked three months out. We were able to sneak in on a 5:30 pm Labor Day Sunday 2 weeks in advance, but the prime dinner times were no where to be found for all week. Second tip: there is a dress code. That being said, kids came in sneakers and soccer jerseys. The adults seemed to respect the dress code, but some wore shorts and i spied a pair of birkenstocks. It IS Cape May in the summer... Third tip: OH MA GOODNESS you have GOT to order the Jumbo Lump Crab Salad. Topped with smoked salmon and almonds, total lump crab dressed with... je ne sais quoi, but it was phenomenal. This is one of the chef's signature dishes. Hubby got the tuna poke, which was good, but he said he wished he got my dish. Daughter got the summer corn soup which was sweet and creamy. But hands down, the crab was the best. Fourth tip: for amusement try to guess the acoustic renditions of the pop songs playing. For example, we heard Wicked Games and Take On Me. Fifth tip: all the pasta is made IN HOUSE. even my daughter's kid's fusilli with butter and cheese had this delicate but al dente texture. Sixth tip: the Grana steak is MAGICAL. Hubby got the rib eye, medium rare, make sure theres a crisp. I am completely clueless as to how they got that steak to be SOOOO good. Hubby and I can cook, and I can usually figure out how to replicate, but I have no idea how the steak was so perfectly seared, seasoned all the way through. Even the eye. Seriously. I got the Halibut. Also cooked to perfection. I usually ask for my halibut to be slightly underdone because it's a split second between fine and dry and overcooked. I forgot this time. This halibut was still perfectly moist, and the leeks were a sublime compliment. Seventh tip: SAVE ROOM FOR DESSERT. I didn't, sadly, but there's a lemon bar with my name on it next time I go. Grana was absolutely incredible and was exactly what we were looking for that evening! I had the salmon, my husband had the pork chop. Both were cooked perfectly and were delicious. Food is ORDINARY. Hostess was RUDE. Seating was HORRIFIC. Ambiance UNINSPIRED. We were told when we arrived that we didn't have a reservation (after they had CALLED US the day before to confirm our reservation). The Hostess was sooo rude to us. Then another woman came over & straightened it out. Yes, we did have a reservation, but it was under the name of the woman at the Virginia Hotel who booked our reservation. Fine, just seat us. But, no, the rude hostess has to bad-mouth the Virginia Hotel (where we were staying & LOVING IT) all the way to our table. Get a grip lady, we are here for fine dining not to listen to your Reservation problems. She seated us right next to the toilet. Every time the bathroom door opened my companion & I nearly gagged. There was a non-stop stream of people using the single bathroom (with sometimes 3 people in line). My seat had the added benefit of not only the smell, but I could see right into the bathroom every time the door opened. I have never had a worse seat in all the years I have been dining out. One of most disappointing things for me, was the menu. I was prepared to have an appetizer, entree & dessert with coffee. I just really struggled to find anything appealing. I settled on just an entree, which my dining companion did as well. We tried to nibble on bread, but two rolls were hard as rocks, the other two had a strong fake-onion flavor (like they were made with Lipton Soup mix). We put in our order & poured the wine we brought. Maybe two sips later our meal arrived. Welcome to McDonalds. I ordered the salmon. The presentation was attractive & my hopes began to renew. First bite so-so, second bite so-so. The orange sauce drizzled around the salmon was very vinegary. The vegetables on top of the salmon looked fresh, but tasted like frozen mixed vegetables. I pushed all the sauce & vegetables to the side. The salmon underneath was a thick, generous cut & very moist. It also tasted fresh. Get ride of the vinegar sauce & frozen mixed vegetables and the salmon was pleasant. We could not find a single dessert either of us wanted. No cakes, torts, trifles. If you like flans and custards & ice cream I guess you could find something. I'm not yet part of the tapioca set, I want a real dessert. This restaurant was highly recommended to us & fell short on every level. I would not recommend it, nor would I return. read more

Love what they did to the former Godmother's Restaurant. The remodel is attractive, and the menu is quite good. We shared the roasted beet and goat cheese salad. The lemon oil added a unique flavor to this salad. I had the cod special which was good but didn't have the spiciness/heat I was looking for despite the curry. My husband had the pan roasted duck breast. Although everything was delicious, he left hungry as the portion sizes were on the smaller side. Prices are somewhat comparable to other Cape May restaurants although I find it hard to believe that anyone is ordering the $140 8 oz Wagyu strip steak at the bottom of the menu. The tables were very close together, hearing every word of the adjacent diners' conversation, which took away from a special or romantic ambiance a bit. The service itself was fantastic. The first courses were standard for the price, nothing remarkable. The second course was one of the worst imposter pasta dishes I've ever had in my life. It was what I presume to be "a take" on spaghetti carbonara. The house made bucatini was fine, but served with large fatty cubes of pancetta, half sautéed onions that did not belong on the dish, a semi cooked egg, which was not part of the sauce and did not break open to help make a sauce you'd expect and desire from a carbonara - a soft boiled egg if you will- and finally, topped with micro greens? instead of the typical parsley and parmesan you'd expect. Nothing was delightful or pleasing about this deconstructed version of a classic dish. The mains were fine - the steak was cooked great and over a bed of silky and delicious mashed potatoes. The chicken was tough and a bit dry. The homemade sorbet was very tasty for dessert. The signature dessert of toffee pudding was terrible. You'd expect something with the description of pudding to be a soft and creamy texture. It was in the shape of a muffin and tasted like dry bran with a small squirt of caramel, not nearly enough to moisten or soften the bread. It was served along a micro scoop of vanilla ice cream with micro mint greens? Overall, the meal would be impressive for the average diner who carries no expectations. For the prices of the menu and amount charged, it left us wanting more out of what was supposed to be a very special dinner. read more

Arrived at 7:30 pm on Oct 5. Small white washed interior with few if any colorful artwork to soften the walls. My wife had the tasting menu, it was just ok. I had the Tuna Tartar with mango, it was a bit loose and runny, presentation was ok , not extraordinary. I then had the Short Rib and Pasta dish. It was very watery as if the pasta had not been drained enough. This is a dish that should have appeared like silk. I ordered the Salmon dish as an entree, this is where the evening came off the rails ! The main problem here is that someone painted the dish with bottled balsamic syrup as if he was putting a third coat on the walls ! This coupled with with a stiff sub-par root vegetable rissoto, smoked bacon and brussel sprout base. The sweetness of the balsamic ruined the dish. As a professional chef for the past forty years I can become a bit more critical than you're average diner, however for the price points exhibited at this establishment there has to be more oversight by the executive chef in producing and serving foods of this so called caliber. read more

Last summer when I found out that the Peter Shields chef opened his own restaurant, I could not wait to go. One of the best meals I had in a long time. I got the crab salmon appetizer (amazing) and the blacked mahi mahi (delicious). Dessert was not as good but it doesn't matter.
