This is a very small restaurant in a cinderblock industrial type strip mall. Seating is very tight. Dinner for 4 with 2 shared appetizers was $260 with the tip. That is pricey for a BYOB with very small portions all around. Order fish, and you will get one single piece of fish with two tablespoons of rice and vegetables. No doggie bags needed here! Not much in the presentation either. It was good but the portions were very underwhelming. You expect more and better for $30+ entrees. The website shows a beautiful appetizer of plump fresh asparagus with huge lumps of crabmeat over the top. $18. What hit our table looked nothing like the picture. Tasteless and small. A fried tomato appetizer - three small tomato rounds and tasteless for $12.99. There is plenty of room for dessert after dinner, and maybe that is the point of the skimpy portions? The restaurant is small so we chose two "to go" options out of an abundance of COVID caution - fried goat cheese salad with a mild balsamic vinaigrette on the side (for both of us), fish (pecan crusted grouper with a light red pepper sauce and fish of the day - Black Sea bass - with a white white caper vinaigrette) and tiramisu and flourless chocolate cake. Honestly, to go can cause havoc with a crispy fish (because they steam en route) but these both arrived with distinct crunch and fabulous flavor. When I asked about them, the server's response was showing me her handwritten ticket and saying, "I don't know. But I wrote medium rare. Don't know what happened in the kitchen." Our last two visits to Backstreet in June and July were very disappointing. Most recently, my Lamb and my wife's flounder were seriously overcooked. This place may seem like a whole in the wall but it is definitely worth stopping by! It is a very cozy place (better for parties smaller than 8) with excellent service. They have their specials written on the board but you truly cannot order wrong! We had the sweet grouper (AMAZING), crab cakes (delicious sauce) and the warm goat cheese salad. For the non-fish lovers the lamb looked amazing (great portion) and the pasta was amazing. You can even add a whole chicken breast for ~$5 which is incredible. It's a simple place, but boy does the food deliver! We ordered a scallops special appetizer with Cajun seasoning and seaweed salad. That was a great start! I had the local caught flounder and jumbo lump crabmeat in a butter dill sauce, and it was outstanding! The vegetable medley was a great, fresh, accompaniment. Couldn't get enough of that delectable sauce though, wow! My friend ordered the rack of lamb encrusted with breadcrumbs and Dijon. The service was friendly and prompt, too. Although tasty we were disappointed with the small portions & lack of presentation. I requested a refill of the complementary focaccia which arrived while I was finishing dessert and was surprised when the crab & asparagus appetizer was placed in front of me consisting of tasteless asparagus & small amount of crab for $15.95. We had such a wonderful dinner on Labor Day weekend. Started with wonderful tomato basil mozzarella and a crab cake. We had sautéed black bass over mashed potatoes, deliciously prepared in a lemon caper sauce. Desert was the only part of the meal we didn't enjoy - key lime pie and peach cobbler. The cobbler "crust" was not like pie crust, more like crepe dough. The key lime pie crust was not really crust, it was graham cracker crumbs. First time, went with our friends who love Backstreet. Bread served upfront was excellent, then the salads, OMG...Spinach salad and Goat Cheese salad were fresh and delicious, and big. Don't miss Backstreet. It is not in Cape May proper, but is in West Cape May (which was a short bike ride). Don't let the strip mall exterior stop you from entering: the place is amazing. And do make reservations as it is on the small side. It is also BYOB (a real plus!). Started with delicious homemade bread (which was not refilled, nor were we asked if we wanted more...one of the only downsides to the meal, although we could certainly have asked). The waitress was exceptional: friendly and attentive. The menu is printed, and specials appear on chalkboards. We started with an grilled asparagus and crab appetizer, followed by a baby spinach, gorgonzola, and nut salad with homemade honey mustard dressing for me, and a warm goat cheese salad over mixed greens with homemade balsamic vinaigrette for my wife and son. The asparagus was perfectly cooked, dressed in olive oil and parmesan cheese, and served with a small pile of fresh, lump crab meat. A great starter. The salads were perfect: just the right size and incredibly flavorful. For dinner, my wife had the crab cakes, I had a founder topped with crab meat, and my son had pasta carbonara. The carbonara was a good portion and had lots of flecks of bacon. The sauce was not too heavy, and left a nice taste. It was addictive to eat. The crab cakes were almost entirely crab meat and no filler. They were cooked perfectly (the kitchen knows how to cook food properly), and served with mashed potatoes and a remoulade sauce. The flounder was fresh, cooked with dill and butter, and topped with a good portion of lump crab meat. The fish was tender and flaky, and the sauce was a nice complement to the fish. It was served with rice and veggies. If they have cobbler on the menu, you should order it when you order your dinner (it takes 30 minutes to prepare as it is baked to order). We had both a peach cobbler and a blueberry cobbler to share among the three of us (one can easily serve two people). They were the most unusual cobblers we have had, but very, very tasty. While we expected more fruit filling, the filling was fresh and topped with the most amazing pastry/dough topping. They were both delicious. The cost per person was about $30-$35, but well worth it. Average food, rude comments by the owners. I originally wrote a 3 star review on another travel site about this restaurant. I have about 225 reviews over a 10 year period on that site, so I am not one of those people who writes a nasty article and is never heard from again. This restaurant is BYOB and one of my complaints was that there was a $3.00 corking fee for wine. It was clearly stated on the bill. Several other reviews on that site also stated that there was a corking fee. After the review was posted I received a nasty email from them denying that there was a fee. I stand by what I wrote. Their comments were unnecessary. Cape May has a lot of good restaurants and the management needs to realize that you do not antagonize your customers. There is too much competition in the restaurant industry and in in a down economy, its not a smart move. Due to this, I cannot recommend this restaurant. read more

This little place is a favorite of my boyfriend's family, and now, after eating there twice, it's one of mine as well! McGlade's is an amazing little family-owned spot right outside of Cape May. It's in a little strip mall, and may not look like much from the outside, but the service is great and the food is truly amazing! We called on a Saturday in the middle of summer to get a reservation for that night for 8 people. They were more than gracious about us and were able to get us at 9 pm. We arrived with our 4 bottles of white wine (which they promptly put on ice) and were seated within a few minutes of arriving. As the other reviewer also says, the bread is amazing, and we quickly asked for more, which they were happy to provide. The regular menu is pretty small, but that's ok as the specials menu (listed on a chalkboard on the wall), is plentiful and definitely the star of the show! As appetizers, we split the baked brie (amazing!), the lobster bisque (yummy) and the bruscetta (also awesome). No complaints at all! For an entree, I ordered the sea bass (crusted with macadamia nuts and with a key lime/tequila glaze. It was one of the pricier dishes on the menu, so I hemmed and hawed a little, but in the end, I'm glad that I ordered it as it was AMAZING! Most of the table got the special grouper (which seems to be a steady special as both times I've been there it's been offered), which was also really, really good. We did try the cobbler for dessert; while it was good, it was definitely not what I would consider a cobbler... I've been coming to Backstreet since it opened several years ago and what was once an actual hole in the wall best-kept-secret place is now a (well deserved) popular gem of Cape May. Is it a small space? Yes. Do you have to wait outside for a table? Yes. Is it worth the wait? Absolutely. The baked Brie is to die for! I dream of it. Our last meal consisted of the Brie, glazed brussel sprouts, goat cheese salad, pasta Alfredo and key lime pie. Found Backstreet Simply Delicious to be average at best. While the menu and daily specials provided a variety of interesting choices, the food left much to be desired for the prices charged. My soup, a crab & shrimp bisque, had very little meat and mild flavor however my wife's corn and crab chowder was excellent.The Grouper special was a small, very thin, fillet with a breaded coating. The menu did not mention the breading and I felt it over-powered the mild flavor of the fish. My dessert, Bananas Foster, was disappointing. The sauce was too thin and the ice cream had pretty much melted by the time it was served. The service was friendly and the atmosphere was comfortable. The selection of apps, entrees, and desserts were plentiful, but too expensive for what was served. With so many other great restaurants in this price range around Cape May, we probably won't return. read more

Best meal we had in Cape May! We went for a long Mother's Day weekend, so it wasn't crowded. BYOB, no issues there. Skipped the appetizers since the dessert menu looked so good. Everyone raves about their meal- Cajun Grouper w/ mango sauce, osso bucco, crap imperial, and flounder francaise- all with simple but flavorful sides of grilled veggies and a starch. The sweet potatoes with nutmeg, cinnamon and other good things were particularly delicious! Desserts were amazing! The service was prompt, friendly but not hovering. Easily our favorite "fine dining" restaurant in Cape May. There are fancier (and more expensive) restaurants in town, but there's no way they beat the food at Backstreet. Soups are creamy, tasty, and HOT. Salads are refreshing and full. And what can I say about main dishes! I had salmon with crabmeat the other night. Juicy. Perfectly cooked, and served with rice and asparagus. Wonderful. I am not a fish eater, but I never pass it up at Backstreet. The chef is one of the owners - always a plus. The restaurant is BYOB, so you're not going to pay $6-$9 for drinks. Reservations are probably a good idea. We enjoy trying new places on our trips to Cape May. I'm stunned by the good reviews of this place. Not only is it a hole in the wall with a warehouse-like atmosphere (VERY loud), but the food and service are below average. I'm just getting around to writing a review, although I have not been there recently. We went with another couple. It's very awkward to come in the door and wait because there is NO space for a waiting area at all. You just stand there at the front door like idiots while there are people eating a foot from you. We all ordered the specials on the board. I got flounder. It was fresh, but it was certainly nothing special. It came w/ plain white rice. I could have prepared something more creative at home. The desserts were the best part of the meal. The wife of the couple who came with us found a hair in her water glass---yuck! It can happen in any place, but overall, this place had a rundown feel to it, that made it seem likely to find a hair in the water glass. Also, the servers were diner-type, so don't expect elegant service. We wondered what was taking so long for our meals, and then we discovered that our server was out on a cigarette break (my husband saw this when he walked out to the car for something). The atmosphere is as loud as the stock exchange floor. We had to shout to hear each other, and after a while, we just stopped talking because of the effort it took to have a conversation. My husband and I had dinner here last night. We had a salad appetizer which was fresh and tasty. My husband had the tuna which was ok. Not really seared on the outside and cooked a little too much. I had the flounder with crab meat. The flounder was so tasteless, like it didn't even exist. We had bananas foster for desert. First bite and we knew we made a mistake. The bananas and sauce were cold like they were just thrown over vanilla ice cream. We told the waitress the bananas and sauce were cold and she said they would take it back into the kitchen and cook it properly. When they brought it back it was properly prepared, even smelled better but strangely, they used the same ice cream they served us the first time! We will not be returning to this restaurant when we are back in Cape May. read more
