I have wanted to try Granby Waffle Shop for a while, especially once I found out it was the sister shop to Richmond's Capitol Waffle Shop. I also won gift certificates for Selden Market, and they were burning a hole in my mind. So early on Sunday morning, my partner and I trek from VA Beach to Downtown Norfolk. After a few phone calls to their owner, I could use my gift certificate. We ordered the classic chicken and waffle for my partner (without Captain Crunch or powdered sugar), and since I was in the mood for sweet and savory - I ordered the Grandma waffle. The Grandma waffle is a full-size waffle featuring scrambled eggs, breaded chicken, strawberries, blueberries, and powdered sugar. To drink, my partner grabbed a coffee, and since I firmly believed in brunch, I grabbed a mimosa. Our drinks were the second best part of our dining experience (the first was the customer service). The waffles were lackluster. The chicken and waffle only feature the equivalent of one chicken tender split into four pieces. I wished I had photo evidence, but my partner said, 'Nope, don't photograph this. ' My waffle was better. The strawberries, blueberries, and powdered sugar helped compensate for the lack of sweetness in the waffle. This waffle shop opened up in Selden Market years ago and Sophia and I finally had the chance to stop by. It's part of the Virginia company Capitol Waffle Shop which has locations in the Richmond area and Harrisonburg. Not only can you select sweet waffle items, but also savory ones as well. We came in when they were nearly empty with an hour left of operations. Would this 1st visit result in happiness or one of disappointment? The business itself looks fantastic. There is bar-type seating next to the counter and in the back a good amount of tables. Each table have disposable forks and knives available and a few have waffle syrup. And the walls are covered with pictures and quotes. If you don't want any soda, they do offer complimentary water and cups for you. Thumbs up from me. After a minute of looking over the menu, we were ready. I selected the Buffalo Chicken Waffle which consisted of lightly fried chicken bites, buffalo sauce, ranch and crushed Doritos nacho cheese chips. It did take a minute to get used to this concoction, but in the end it was really good. The waffle itself was baked perfectly and most importantly, did not become soft nor soggy from the toppings. Very important. I would've liked a bit more drizzle of buffalo sauce and ranch, but this right here worked from the first bite to the last. Sophia ordered the chorizo egg and queso waffle and enjoyed it as well. That could be an item to order the next time we stop by.. It located in the selden market and has customizable waffles that can be savory or sweet. I made a takeout order and got the one sweet waffle $11.49, bacon cordon waffle $12.05, and full size house captain crunch chicken & waffles $10.99. - One sweet waffle * This SWEET (diabetes) waffle comes with blueberries, strawberries, Oreo toppings, m&ms, and chocolate syrup. * The waffle was pretty intimidating and SWEET (of course) but all in all, it was solid to me. I know kids and lovers of sweets would be all over this waffle. - Bacon cordon waffle * This SAVORY waffle comes with bacon, fried chicken bites, onions, melted cheese, and more cheese. * This was a pretty good waffle and it was easily my favorite of the 3. - House captain crunch chicken & waffles * This is just a plain waffle with captain crunch seasoning/crumbs & fried "chicken" bites but it was a huge disappointment. * Waffle was decent but everything else sucked: the "chicken" and captain crunch seasoning/crumbs were both awful. * The "chicken" didn't taste like real chicken but instead tasted like low quality freezer chicken nuggets from the store. The person who took our order didn't have any life to him - didn't greet us, didn't smile - it was clear he didn't want to be working . I started our ordering the bowl with scrambled egg but told him I changed my mind and ordered half chicken and waffle. My friend did too but ended up paying for the scrambled egg on a waffle. Good thing was the fast and great service gotten from the manager regarding my friend's refund! They were so sweet, positive and funny. And they were so helpful walking me through the robust menu, filled with so many savory and sweet options. I'm not a huge waffle person and hang more on the savory side of the street, so they showed me which menu items may be of interest and then also explained that I could customize anything. I was also happy to see you can order half of a waffle, which is the perfect amount I would want without having to then be wasteful. The food was pretty good, but it was the service that made me so happy I stopped by. Businesses like this really reflect how much an interaction with a great business can really set the tone and mood for so many people, each and everyday. They do not offer table service. The counter service is quick and seamless. While you order is being prepared you have time to find a table there is plenty of seating inside or if the weather is nice you can sit outside. I ordered The Martha with no blueberries. If you're in the mood for waffles, this is the place for you. An entire establishment with just that-- waffles. It's not so much a "restaurant" style as much as it gave "coffee shop" vibes. I don't recommend large family gatherings as it's a kind of small place. The location can be found inside of the Selden Market off Granby street closer to Plume Street. It's a cute place with funny sayings on the walls. The cashier didn't seem too informed of what GWS offered, however the owner/ manager on staff was extremely helpful. Once you order, you wait for your drink to be made. Upon receiving your beverage, you can find seating and they will bring the food to you. The owner/ manager was extremely funny when shouting your name. He always seem to sing a fun tune with delivery of your food. We ordered the whole chicken and waffles (which comes with captain crunch), Piggy egg waffle, lemonade, and Granby mimosa. The chicken for the chicken and waffles could have been a little more crisper. They mentioned it was oven baked, but maybe having an air Fryer would make it even better. I also optMy boyfriend really enjoyed the piggy egg-- I'm surprised I was able to get a photo. The cutest thing was the mini waffle on the edge of the mimosa. Super cute and innovative. Piggy Egg Berry Waffle. It was yummy but I was slightly disappointed because it was supposed to come with blueberries and strawberries. They were out of blueberries that day, but failed to let me know. When the waffle came out there were no blueberries. They did offer to put extra strawberries or bananas, but that was after they served it to me. I decided on bananas instead. Disappointed. I'm in Norfolk from Northern Virginia for the day & I decided to try a local spot for breakfast. I figured can't go wrong with chicken & waffles. Sadly mistaken. The cashier & the girl that brought me my food were nice, restaurant looked clean, but it was chilly inside so I decided to take my food to go. After a week in the Outer Banks, my family and I stayed the night in downtown Norfolk before flying out the following morning. Before heading for the airport to catch our flight, we stopped at the Granby Waffle Shop for a quick breakfast. Orders are placed at the counter (or through an online ordering system) and prepared in the open kitchen behind. It was busy on a Monday morning holiday, but the wait for our food was only about 15 minutes. I ordered the Captain Crunch chicken & waffles, which come with oven-baked breaded chicken bites, captain crunch, and powdered sugar ($10.99). I would have preferred the chicken to be deep-fried, but this was still really good. You can order this without the Captain Crunch cereal, but I would not recommend doing so. The crushed cereal adds a nice sweetness to the dish that would be missing otherwise. My kids were happy with their house waffles, but you can also build your own waffles from a wide variety of toppings. There are also more than a dozen specialty savory waffles and a handful of dessert waffles. I really liked this unique concept and would recommend checking it out when in the area. read more

My son wanted waffles and we were in the area. So we tried it. Now I know why the place is always empty. Food there reminded me of something you would get at an amusement park. My husband and I went here to get brunch with our friends and family on Father's Day, which is also the day after we got married. Melvin and Quan were friendly and very helpful. Quan gave us a warm greeting and congratulations when we told him we just got married. We asked him if they had plant-based/non-dairy whipped cream available to substitute the regular dairy whipped cream on the waffles (I have a dairy allergy) and Quan had non-dairy whipped cream ready for us, which we appreciated. Melvin brought our food out to us and was great as well. The restaurant has ample seating and is very spacious, well lit, and clean. There are a wide variety of flavors and toppings to try on the menu. They also have vegan and gluten-free waffles. I ordered the Martha waffle and a mimosa (the mimosa comes with a cute little waffle wedge on the rim). The food was DELICIOUS, and we definitely plan on going back again. What a great little place! Who doesn't like waffles? Everyone does, and to be able to have them in very different ways is awesome. The chorizo spice sneaks up on you as you eat it, but never becomes overpowering. Sprinkle some of that syrup on there, and the sweet, savory, and spicy play together really well. My only complaint is the coffee. I had grounds at the bottom of my cup, which is not a nice surprise! But some quality coffee in a place like this would really set it off. The location is inside of a shopping center, right across from the Stockpot. Inside is surprisingly large. We arrived right after opening so it wasn't packed, but the traffic was steady. Over this past year, I feel like this waffle shop has been on a downhill trend. My friend ordered a chicken and waffle, and he got a couple what-looked-like Tyson Chicken Nuggets instead of a full fried chicken breast or fried chicken tenders. We ordered our food and we didn't get our food for an hour because they couldn't get the waffle maker to produce waffles as fast as orders were coming in. The batter was just worse than a Hampton Inn waffle batter. My other friend ordered eggs and bacon with his waffles. He only got eggs on his waffles because they ran out of bacon at 11am, and the eggs were not real eggs. They were the drenched powdered eggs, so it looked and tasted grainy. We have been saying for months that we need to check out Granby Waffle and I'm so disappointed it took us that long because the food, service and atmosphere was perfect! Located immediately to the side of Slover Library, we sat in the open area with sky lights that give views of the library. The seating area was spacious, clean and had great lighting. The waffles were little crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, just like a good Belgium waffle should be! They had a good flavor and didn't overpower the toppings. I got the chicken and waffles and I barely needed any syrup. The salty/sweet combination was perfect. My husband got the meat lovers waffle with egg, chicken and sausage. He didn't even offer me a bite, he kept it all to himself. And the icing on the cake of this awesome experience was the service! The Country Breakfast Waffle was good but it taste like it was missing something. The chicken was more like chicken nuggets and they were not cooked very done. I could've like some flavored syrup to go along with it. The Chicken Ranch BLT Waffle needed more sauce as it was dry! We also tried the Hash Brown waffle!
