I've had this place on my list for a while now, and decided to swing by for lunch after a workout class. It was a Sunday around 12:30 and decently busy inside, but no wait! I ordered a pumpkin spice latte that was delicious, and their lunch special which includes a half sandwich, cup of soup, and a side. The soups and sides rotate daily! Today it was chicken noodle and a pasta caprese salad. The soup was okay, a little heavy on the thyme and light on the salt, but still pretty good. I really enjoyed the B.L.A.T with dill mayo. Inside was cosy, nothing special but has a very hometown vibe to it with (of course) lots of local art. Will return and try the pastries next time--they seemed to be out of a lot, but I won't fault them for that on a Sunday! read more

They sell jewelry and stuff. I don't know if the artists are local, but probably. I'm not opposed to a restaurant that also sells jewelry, but I go for the food. The menu is not super extensive, but they have some variety. I went for brunch and ordered the biscuits and gravy. The sausage was bland, and the gravy was thin. Starving Artist is a great brunch place in the ODU area. I tried the breakfast bowl that consisted of scrambled eggs, potatoes, spinach and Turkey sausage. However, you can build your own to your liking. Despite it being almost a full house, the food was served pretty quickly and our server check on us quite often. I must say, I was still left hungry after eating my dish that I ended up ordering their croissant French Toast. It exceeded my expectations and it's something I must have when I come back. The texture was perfect, where there was decent crunch and not too soft/soggy after applying syrup. The taste balance between the croissant and the toast was amazing. As an artist I do like that they actually have local art up for display and purchase. There's a duality of supporting local businesses within the establishment. The only negative I have, is that they were out of oatmilk. Other than that I highly suggest Starving Artist if you're in the area and looking for a good place to eat! read more

It was a rainy Sunday and we were able to grab seat at the bar. The inside isn't fancy but it's clean and the staff was friendly and attentive to us as soon as we entered. The food was very good! We both bowls and a half order of the sausage biscuits and gravy to share. The carnitas bowl was very good, my only note is that carnitas (to me) is more like a pork shoulder/butt that's often shredded. The carnitas in this bowl was more like sausage. It still tasted good but it wasn't what I expected. My husband got the daily special, a brisket bowl. He really enjoyed it. Last but not least, the sausage gravy was delicious. I have been eating at SA since the Kim days, back to 2016. I only support local establishments. The last few times, my order was not correct. I gave it another chance as I enjoy the local vibe in the area. I always go for brunch which includes a Mimosa, they were $5 recently. This last visit, I was charged over $23 for 2 Mimosas. I would expect that in a fine dining restaurant. Their prices are much higher than what they should be for what you get as the food is ok but could be better in terms of taste. Another fabulous brunch find as brunch continues to be my favorite thing in the history of ever. I've been driving past this for years and most recently, very aware of it as I've started going to nearby Daphne's Salon for my hair. My friend and I arrived at 1:30 for brunch and they close at 2. I chose to go with the french scramble because it sounded amazing, and it was. It's a generous portion for the price: $11. It comes with probably 3 scrambled eggs, red peppers chopped really fine, avocado, spinach and goat cheese. Two strips of bacon and a toasted english muffin. The eggs were to die for - so delicious - they didn't even need any extra seasoning or sauce on them. I almost licked my plate. Soooo good. My friend chose a Womlette which is basically an egg omelette made in a waffle maker. She loved it as well. We sat for a bit but didn't wanna stay too long, although we were offered gelato and told kindly that we didn't need to rush because it was OK while they cleaned up. I love that they have local artists work on the walls, it's for sale, and that it changes. I loved the menu and I LOVED my scramble. Yum yum yum. My wife and I came here on a beautiful Friday morning after a fantastic workout at CycleBar in Hilltop. We saw this place in a post on Instagram in which the poster claimed Starving Artist Cafe has the best brunch in Norfolk, VA. Given that one of our favorite brunch spots, Cure (also reviewed on Yelp for you), is also in Norfolk, we had no choice but to check it out. For starters, since times are tough for a lot of people right now, here are the average prices per category on the menu: "Breakfast Anytime" - $10.61 "Handhelds" - $10.16 "Lunch Sandwiches" - $10.20 "Salad/Soup" - $10.87 "Coffee/Tea" - $3.85 As always, I included photos of the menu with prices included. Between my wife and I, we ordered the following items: Drinks: Irish Coffee, Caramel Latte Food: Breakfast Grilled Cheese, Starving Artist Special Starting with drinks, my wife said her latte was simple yet great, not too sweet and also not too strong. My Irish coffee was PHENOMENAL, made with Jameson (and not poured lightly either, which was surprising for $7). It was warm on the chest, not too strong but strong enough to know you're drinking a good Irish coffee. For food, I had the breakfast grilled cheese. I was stuck between the two, and waitress recommended the grilled cheese. It was a great sandwich, with bacon, avocado and some other things. The toast wasn't too crispy or too soft/soggy, it was not very greasy, and it was light yet filling. My wife really enjoyed her starving artist special, a simple breakfast plate. The shop doesn't have much for parking, but at the time we were there, there was sufficient street parking right in front of and right down the street. They have a very cute outdoor patio area with 3 or 4 tables. The inside has some tables and some booths, as well as a bar area. The drinks were priced fair enough that I would definitely sit there and have a couple lunch time drinks. I included some photos of the inside of the cafe for reference. The staff was very friendly, attentive, but not overcrowding. If you're looking for a nice breakfast / brunch / lunch spot, I definitely recommend this place. The service was beyond spectacular !! Even with a full house and one server, she was sweet, kind , and super fast. The mimosas we really good. I recommend the peach pear. However, I would only come here for the ambiance because the food was not the best. I got biscuits and gravy, super watery, under seasoned, and honestly smelled a little weird. I had to drown it in hot sauce, salt and pepper. Also got croissant French toast and it was burnt and had a weird strawberry filling that tasted like nothing lol. The chorizo bowl was good tho. Stopped here for some brunch and wasn't too busy when we arrived. The inside was nicely decorated and gave off a real homey vibe. I ordered a mimosa and I think they used freshly squeezed orange juice because there were some pulp bits in there which I didn't mind at all. We ordered our food and it honestly did take awhile for it to arrive to us. A couple had came and sat next to us about 40 minutes after we ordered and they received their food shortly after we did. Other than that everything else was great. The french toast is actually croissants just kind of smashed down but honestly they were perfectly flakey and super yum as well. Place was just under half full and it took my friend and I nearly 90 minutes for start to finish meal experience; way too long for working folks! Frida Kahlo sandwich (Turkey, Brie, cranberry jelly, strawberry) was good; swapped out sourdough for croissant with no pushback; coleslaw side had an odd consistency, almost like they added hollandaise? Starving Artist Cafe popped up and we decided to check it out and see what it was all about. When you walk in, they have a full bar here and might I say that it's a very artist thing to do. The womlette itself was okay, there wasn't really anything exciting about it but it was unique in that it was shaped like the waffle. I'm guessing they just made it in a waffle iron. It was also served with some potatoes and your choice of bread. It was okay, nothing special or exciting, but it filled me up. Overall, takeaways from my experience was the wait time, and the average quality when it came to the food. She blatantly told me that I should know that latte with extra shot of espresso is same as macchiato and I should just order macchiato if I understand English. However I politely asked her please give me a latte with an extra shot. My friend is a white guy from NYC he was jaw dropping. He asked me do you always get treated like that around here. We ordered to go. ** Safety note: Majority of the customers were not wearing masks going in and out of the place. They don't enforce it either. The avocado and crumbled goat cheese was left out! It was disappointing since that was the main point of the dish. It was served with bacon and an English muffin. It felt like we overpaid since it was missing ingredients from this dish. Reuben: Hub said it was ok. The portion was pretty small compared to most spots. Everything was prepped fresh though. French Toast: Our kids enjoyed the French toast. It came pipping hot with butter and hash browns on the side. Mac and Cheese: the worse mac and cheese. It looked like something made at a school cafeteria. You can see the fake cheddar melted into it. It end up caked into the macaroni. The texture was mushy and unappetizing. Sausage: We got it as a side for our 3 yr. old son. It tasted like it came out from a frozen package of sausage patties. It's mainly a tourist spot particularly looking from the outside. First time here. Super cute location and very, very friendly staff. Which is hard to find in VA. To start I had the cold brew and my mom had the drip which were both really good. I ordered the Eggs Benedict. Kinda sad because I was craving them all week. The ham was really, really salty and the biscuit was very buttery. The potatoes were delicious, perfect seasoning. My mom ordered the Artist Special. She asked for well done eggs but they weren't well done. She liked the bacon, potatoes and the Summer Flavor Honey jam was amazing.
