It was very big, very fulling and tasted good. I had someone walk past and asked me what it was as it looked so good. Amerocanized Mexican food . Being from CA it is hard to find good Mexican food like I had back home and this is a perfect example of why they do not use real cheese more of a cheese sauce that's not great. They have 3 different salsas mild, white cheese and a super hot (upon request). I had the enchiladas with carnitas and rice, not bad bit the rice was not good. Mexican food in Troy.. Since we are fortunate to have Mexicantown in the D, I was skeptical this place could deliver... I'm happy to report they beat my expectations. As is normal course for Mexican restaurants, we were served corn chips and salsa... And a surprise: ranch dressing type stuff -- not your typical before dinner chip dip.. The menu is robust. Lots and lots of choices for lunch and dinner. I really liked the lunch selection and the reasonable prices - $7.99. My best buddy Jahnifer and I order the lunch size steak fajitas - the prefect size for lunch! The steak was tender, the flour tortillas warm, and a nice side of beans and toppings. The decor is typical Mexican chain restaurant style, but that's not a bad thing. It brought back memories of Chi-Chi's, which I loved as a kid. What I really liked most about the decor was the fancy tabletops with various pictures of Mexican women, etc.., set under a highly lacquered finish. The service was good. read more

Ok, I may have been a little harsh in my first update. I am moving my 2 star update it a 3 star update. I ordered take out - on Cinco de Mayo. The service was TERRIBLE, just flat out terrible. I called ahead and ordered, when I got there they told me I was at the wrong place (I was not). They had lost my order. When I ordered again, things they said were included with my meal when I called the first time were no longer included. I should have given up, but I really wanted my yummy Mexican food. So I waited another 15 minutes (after waiting the original 15 minutes, and another 10 to figure out, I was at the right place and to reorder). All of that awful service is the ONLY reason they are getting less than 5 stars. I did not eat in so I can't really comment on their cleanliness. Their atmosphere seemed nice enough. Their food was great. As far as Ameri-Mexican goes it's on of the best in the area. It's definitely not authentic Mexican food but whenever I want the white cheese and American style fajitas, I'll be back to give them another try. read more

Yummy, cheap, quick. The salsa is nothing to write home about, but I do like the tangy dip they also bring out with the chips. A lot of the entrees list "nacho cheese sauce." This is not the bright orange stuff you get on nachos at the ball park. It is more of a white cheese sauce - I'm sure it is still something processed, but I like it. The menu is pretty extensive with a la carte, combination plates and entrees. Some of my favorite are the alambre (sort of like fajitas), the fajita burritos, the shrimp burritos, and they used to have a pork dish with green peppers and onions that I loved, but I can't find it on the online menu - maybe it is gone :( My boyfriend loves the chimichangas. Just about everything comes with your choice of either rice or beans. The only thing I would stay away from is the fish tacos. They are shredded fish mixed with tomatoes and onions, and I think they are terrible! Even when it is crowded, service is fast. read more

My hubby and I went here today after work for lunch. They made our food fast; it wasn't undercooked or overcooked. We also bought the cheesecake dessert; that was yummy. The lunch itself was good. I wouldn't say that it was better than other Mexican food but it was bad either. You get a good portion for the price so no complaints there. When we went in, there wasn't a lot of people. We were seated in a booth. Our table was clean. The restaurant itself was clean. Our waiter was friendly. We didn't try to butcher the pronunciation of menu and just pointed to what we wanted. I know there are reviews that complain about the language but for me, I think it adds to the theme and environment of the restaurant. I have had waiters and waitresses who can speak English well and be rude and uncaring when servicing my table. I would rather choose a server who cares for his or her table whether that person speaks your language. There are many ways of communication, language is not the only one. read more

I'm so glad I decided to try a new place for Mexican food. Now I know why Grand Azteca is a successful chain. You know the food is going to be delicious when the entire staff is Latino. Right away we were greeted and brought to a booth. We arrived at 6:30pm, right before the dinner rush, but it seemed they were already in a dinner rush. Our server was very prompt and friendly. Our chips and salsa were refilled quickly as well as our drinks . The salsa is delicious and didn't have to rely on spice. The white dipping sauce was interesting as I've never had it before. It reminded me of an aioli. I ordered the combo #29, my daughter got the tamales dinner, and husband got the steak ranchero dinner. My toddler ate off my plate and ate 3/4 of my tamale, a good sign. My plate also had a chile relleno and tostaguac. We all devoured our food and enjoyed every bite. By the time we left, all the tables were full of patrons and we were glad we came early. All in all it was a wonderful experience and we will be coming by more often! read more

He acted as if it was an issue to repeat something..."I just told you" was one of his best spoken phrases. He never returned to the table once the meals were served until he was ready to bring the bill and clear the table. WORST experience ever. They put me in booth next to bathrooms across from door. I asked server after drink came, pls move me, it's freezing! He says, "We're packed" and walks away. Food comes, didn't look like what I ordered but I started cutting into it and server comes back and takes my plate and says, sorry, not yours. This is yours, and puts a different plate in front of me. (I heard the SAME thing happen to the booth next to me. Either the cook or the server is an idiot. My guess is the server.) So I ate it, while FREEZING and enjoying constant "bathroom whiffs" if you know what I mean. And I had the honor paying over $21 for this meal (1 margarita, 1 iced tea and 1 "cheap" entree.) Horrible! First time in my life I left $0 tip. Icing on the cake: When I paid my bill, the cashier asked me how was everything? I said terrible. She smiled, as if she thought I was kidding. I said, no really, it was horrible. I told her first, I was freezing and when I told the server, all he said was "we're packed" and walked away. 2nd, they brought the wrong food. 3rd, I had to enjoy the smell from the bathrooms while I ate. It was horrible. Her reply? "At least you were honest". Seriously? If I was restaurant mgt and my customer said that to me, I would at least apologize, then optionally, comp the meal. Last time I was here. I was with a group of about 8. We sat down and ordered our meals. As you know they bring complementary chips and salsa to your table. As the waitress sat the chips down and my daughter reached for a chip, I see a cockroach running across the table. It apparently and I'm assuming, came to tge table from the kitchen as they brought the chips. We immediately left. I've been coming here regularly for some years... This is the first of the area's Grand Azteca mini-chain of restaurants. In the beginning they didn't have a liquor license and the decor was... erm, homemade. Basically they took a defunct Denny's, painted it pink, put up some plaster pseudo arch-wall things and called it a Mexican restaurant. So, it was pretty low-brow. But the food... Okay, so it's not gourmet. Get over it. If you're paying $12 for a combo plate, don't expect culinary genius. It's greasy, it's basic, it's fried, and in most cases very satisfying. If you're used to Juan's Hacienda, you'll be happy. If you're used to Taco Bell, Del Taco... you'll be happy. If you miss ChiChi's... you'll be happy. If you're looking for six colors of vegetables on your plate... not so much. Chips are served warm with two sauces, the mexican ranch that most seem to abhor here is actually my preference. I'll sometimes order ala carte, or if I'm hungry, will get the #15 combo. (I've ordered it a dozen times, and it's just #15 to me... don't remember what comes with it.) Grand Azteca has grown from one pretty atrocious looking Denny's makeover, to five restaurants all over Macomb and Oakland counties. Their success speaks volumes about their food being better than represented by the unhappy reviews here. They're worth trying if you're willing to accept pretty tasty food at reasonable prices. They aren't gourmet, but they don't pretend to be. read more

I won't be going here again. I ordered a vegetarian option and when my meal came there was a section of my plate with ground beef all over it. I scooped it onto a napkin and left it out on the table and our waiter never asked about it, but then again he never came to the table to check on us, he walked by multiple times but never stopped. So far this is our most negative review and worst experience. We were very disappointed. It was gross and we were actually starving! You know how when you get so hungry that a sub par meal can taste like the best you ever had. We couldn't wait to leave. It was like they heated up a Mexican TV dinner and plopped it on our plates. The waiter, although he seemed to have good intentions, was a little overwhelmed with too many tables to be able to take care of us like he should.
