I could not have been more disappointed in this restaurant. The service and the food were unbelievably bad. The food wasn't just bad for Mexican food, it was bad, period. This was most of my group's first time eating there and it was also the last.
As this was my first time here, I read through the entire menu. As there are certain ingredients I can't eat, I asked the waiter about how some of the dishes were cooked (fried in oil, steamed in chicken stock, etc.). It immediately became clear that there was an unfortunate, huge language barrier, which is pretty concerning when you need to avoid certain foods and clear communication is key. I wasn't going to be upset if a dish contained a certain ingredient; I just needed to know so I could avoid it. After several minutes of back-and-forth, my waiter still didn't understand my question and he just left. I assumed he was getting another employee who would be able to help us, but he disappeared for a good 20 minutes (there were only customers at 1 other table, and he didn't visit their table in all that time, either), then returned with an answer. It was apparent that he still didn't actually understand my question and he didn't even speak to anyone in the kitchen in all that time. Our table had a direct view of the kitchen, so I would have seen him enter the kitchen. For those with allergies or other dietary restrictions, lack of being able to effectively communicate with customers (or at least have one person on site who can) could be downright dangerous.
Now to the food. Wow. I love Mexican food and give a lot of leeway to what qualifies (living this far north, you almost have to), but the dish I received would barely qualify as Mexican food, let alone restaurant-quality food. I ordered a mushroom and cheese quesadilla. Simple enough to get right? Or so I thought. It looked like they opened the cheapest canned mushrooms they could find and literally poured them out of the can and onto a previously cooked cheese quesadilla. I got the impression they weren't even grilled, cooked, or even warmed in any way. And good Mexican food can be nice and greasy at times. This was bad greasy. Really, really super bad greasy. I've never had a simple quesadilla that was swimming in so much grease. I had to skip eating the sides served with my meal, as I never could get an answer as far as how they were cooked and was only able to eat about half of my barely (if it all) cooked mushrooms and grease quesadilla.
Now, before I sound like I'm just being picky or difficult, everyone else in my party (none of who have my dietary restrictions) was similarly displeased with the food. Everyone ordered different dishes and they all commented on how greasy their food was. They also had a lot of difficulty communicating with the server.
Even if the food was free, I would not eat here again. There should be at least one employee on site who can communicate with customers when they have questions or concerns. And what if there was an emergency? How would the staff communicate with the customers? After eating at restaurants like Mexican Village or Xochimilco, you will be sorely disappointed that Azteca can't even get *food* right, let alone Mexican food. read more
