I've read reviews complaining about how this isn't Authentic Mexican Food. Do you know what I care about when I go to a restaurant? I care if the food is good. If I want authentic Mexican food, I'll go to Mexican Town. Camellia's has good food, and I was happy I stopped here to eat. First, I'll start with maybe the most inauthentic item first. The chorizo and ground beef "sliders" were actually 2 burgers in regular-sized buns. Each had maybe 3 ounces of meat, and they were good, Not "I can feel the breeze off the beach in Cancun" good, but it was good with a smear of pretty authentic-tasting guacamole. We ordered chips with guacamole as a starter, and these seem to be pretty darned authentic chips. They were sturdy, with a terrific corn flavor, and a nice crunch to them. Definitely not Tostitos. The large amount of not-authentic-Mexican fries served with the "sliders" were excellent skin-on shoestring fries. My wife ordered chicken and steak fajitas. She didn't like the steak, saying it was too chewy. I have to say, it was maybe a tough cut of steak, and it was a bit overly salty, but I liked the flavor. The chicken was good, with a bit less seasoning. The rest consisted of all the things you expect in fajitas, and all of it was solid. I liked the drink selection. There were actually more Mexican beers here than I have ever seen in Mexican Town. Negra Modelo on tap? I wish I were able to get that when I go downtown, but I'm glad I was able to get a large glass for a reasonable price here. There were a lot of different flavors of margaritas. My wife loved the peach margarita she ordered. There were two waitresses, and a mostly full house, and they were able to keep up with the demand. The price was reasonable for the large portions of food, too. I'm not giving up on the delicious food in Mexican town, but I definitely wouldn't mind coming back here again for something less authentic, but still tasty. read more

I have been a loyal customer for over 20 years. After last night's experience I will think twice about returning. I wasn't too hungry and ordered an a la carte veggie burrito for $3.99. My partner ordered a full meal. The server did not tell me that there would be an EXTRA charge of $2.99 to make my a la carte burrito a veggie one (a chicken or beef one would be $3.99). What a surprise when getting the bill. And all the veggie burrito consisted of was onions, green peppers, tomatoes and lettuce. Why would this cost extra? Ridiculous. Between surprises like this and having to pay for chips and salsa, it's a wonder this place stays in business. It's a shame as the food is good. read more

The food and margaritas are really good. We go regularly! I think my favorite thing is the birria tacos.

The food is good, the ambience is great (especially in the warm months when they open the hangar windows in front) but the prices here are extortionate. Chips and salsa, a pitcher of Margs and the fajitas for two will set you back $100. I know times are rough for the service industry but *yeesh*. read more

The guacamole was $10 and came in a 8 ounce container (est) that was about half full. The guacamole was very bland, in fact I think it was only avocado with tomatoes and cilantro sprinkled on top. We drove by this place several times and decided to try it out. We have been back a few times and really loved it. I went to junior high, high school, and undergrad in southeastern Arizona; so I love Mexican food. The folks here are friendly and the service is good. We've never had to wait long to put in orders or get our drinks and food. I usually get a house margarita, which is great. For dinner, I vary between enchiladas and chimichangas; both of which I love. I am also so happy to see they have tres leches cake. I have not seen that in other Mexican restaurants in Michigan. I used to get them from a small bakery in Spanish Harlem. It is one of my favorite desserts, and Camelia's makes a great one. I am eager to try their brunch sometime. read more

Real Mexican, real chips and salsa!! My girlfriends and I tried this place out after being disappointed by a lot of the other "Mexican" places in the area. There chips and salsa are homemade and you pay by the basket but I'd happily give them my money! Menu has a ton of choices! We all had something different; enchiladas, super burrito, birria tacos and chorizo potatoes tacos. There were no complaints and plenty of leftovers. This is a quaint little Mexican place my partner and I get take out from every now and again. We both love Mexican (tex-mex and authentic) and this place definitely isn't authentic but isn't too tex-mex either. I'm more of a sagebrush person (Lake Orion, also Tex-Mex) but this place is a nice substitute and is A LOT closer. My partner likes this place a little more than I do and will sometimes get takeout on their own. Our most recent takeout I got the nachos with ground beef - the website implied it was shredded but it ended up being ground unfortunately, and kind of ruining it for me. I've had the flautas, as well as quesadillas from here and both are just O-K. My partner loves their tortilla soup and their fautas. We will visit again but if sagebrush was closer I'm not sure I'd come back. read more

I wish this place was better. I live nearby and have had some good meals in the past. This last time we ordered one plate of the Tex Mex Nachos. The server misinterpreted and brought two. The Nachos came smothered liquid cheese making it not very edible. I had this dish before and with melted shredded cheese was very good. I wonder if they ran out of shredded cheese or substituted because of being near closing. I went to Camelia's the second time last night & can honestly say I thought the food was better this time than my first. The queso had a GREAT consistency and a good flavor to it. Not bland, but not spicy. I ordered the house passion fruit margarita & enjoy the taste of that, as well. My entree was the taco platter & it wasn't anything exciting, but I did enjoy it. Overall, the service wasn't anything to complain about. I really appreciated being asked if I was done with my meal once before the plate was taken away. This is a nice little local Mexican restaurant that is always easy to get in and out of. Just a short distance away from the hustle and bustle of Main Street this is a strong local favorite. Small bar area (that is currently Covid closed) but the Margaritas are good and the chips are aplenty. The food isn't my all time favorite but honestly I've never had a bad meal here. It's very busy so be prepared to wait no matter if you are eating in or getting takeout. First of all, food is great....I've been coming here for the last 2 years because it WAS one of our favorite places for Mexican cuisine. Literally a block over from us. Easy choice for us!! HOWEVER....Over the past year (2022) this place has taken a serious nose dive! I feel that the servers are overwhelmed which is causing them to stress out, lessening the enjoyment of our experience. We had the same server who we really enjoyed seeing every week, tipped her 15-20%, very personal, always said "Hey guys!?" Every time we came in the door. Next thing you know, we came in and the server didn't even look at us, didn't say hi, nothing. Maybe the server was having a bad day? No, that attitude never left. We felt like maybe we stiffed her on our bill or something?! We went back 2-3 times a month thereafter until the food wasn't worth the experience. We tried, and tried. Finally we decided to stop going completely and only order To-Go. Well....after tonight's experience with To-Go, again, WE ARE DONE. I will go to Taco Bell over this establishment, and that says something. We were hung up on twice just trying to place an order. Ordered Birria Taco Meal, Tortilla Soup, large guac, chips, and (2) salsas: $47 & 40 minute wait. No utensils, or napkins were included when we arrived home. Meal was absolutely awesome. We just finished it. Maybe the Taco Bell comment was a bit much. That tortilla soup is the BOMB. OMG. Great work from the cooks!!! After about 8 times here, service is consistently awful, sometimes to a comical level. We've been ignored once when only 2 other tables were seated in the whole restaurant, and we walked out then.. Tonight we waited for about 40 mins. The bar tender who served us was too cowardly to address the clear issue tonight. After 1/2 hour + of waiting for our meals, we still had to ask for silverware and refill on a fountain drink; I wasn't offered a refill on my beer (would of declined anyways, but the offer would of been nice..) Food has made "good" quo maybe twice out of those 8 times. I would of expected something comped after how long we waited tonight, but no.... We're done with this place. read more

My boyfriend and I visited this restaurant for the first time yesterday. There were some pleasant surprises and some disappointments: Some allowances should probably be given for the fact that it appears they don't have enough staff. So the servers and staff seem to do the best they can in terms of wait time, time to take orders or for seating and being served food. But it did take a minute for someone to attend to us when we arrived and they hastily cleaned the table for us, which was appreciated, but they missed food on a couple chairs we wiped off. We both ordered their house margarita on the rocks and then one later on blended. We would probably pass next time - it just tastes like a margarita made with lots of mix from a grocery store shelf. It's not an authentic margarita and it's quite sugary. Some might like that, but it was also a very light pour. We both ordered fajitas, one steak and one chicken. As previously mentioned it did take a little longer than desired for the food to arrive but I will say that the quality of the food was really good. The chicken was moist and served in large strips - it looked like they almost served a whole chicken breast sliced nicely in strips. The steak was also really good quality and the pieces had lots of tenderness and flavor. I would recommend that the restaurant serve 6 small corn tortillas to their customers since corn tortillas are tiny and break easily, which is typically why street tacos are served with two per taco. If you get flour tortillas you probably don't need to worry about that though. The fajitas came with rice and beans, pico de gallo and guacamole with lime wedges. Most places serve sour cream and lettuce with theirs but it didn't feel needed. I was impressed by the flavor of everything. If their margarita was better and the wait time was improved (while I understand that having a lack of staff sometimes can't be helped, reviews should be objective) this restaurant would get a higher review. The quality of the fajitas were really good so come out here when you want a nice casual dinner but save yourself some money and don't get drinks. read more

This place used to be realllllly good, not flashy, but the food was great and consistent. Now it is hit or mis which is unfortunate. But the biggest complaint I have, OWNERS OF THE RESTAURANT PLEASE LISTEN UP FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, they need to put those sliding foot pads on the chairs. I can't eat there inside at the restaurant anymore because EVERY TIME a chair is moved it is the most remarkably obnoxious loud noise. It pierces your ears every time I swear. The servers are hit or miss as well...there is one gentleman, I honestly don't know his name, but he messes the orders up every time we have him and couldn't give two poops. It is still my go-to local place for tacos and super nachos, but only take away due to the chairs. A petty complaint???? Very disappointed. I'm heading home from downtown Detroit, I called in for a carry out order and I was placed on hold. Seven minutes later finally someone takes my order. Six minutes later I get to Camelia's, the place only has five tables the rest are empty. I was hungry other wise I would have cancelled. Not sure if Camelia's is under new ownership, but last two times I've been here service has been bad for carry out. Two weeks ago I stopped by and needed to place a carry out order. The gentleman behind the bar asked me to wait. I patiently waited ten minutes, yep ten minutes and left. I went to the Grill down the street. Tonight, I arrive and again I am asked to wait. After five minutes, I asked one of the waitress if she can take my order. She told me the lady behind the bar will take my order. The lady finally took my order but not too enthusiastic at all. First off the lighting here is horrible. I have good sight but could hardly see the menu. Poor ventilation as well. One fajita over and that's all I can smell now. The salsa in the red bowl is hotter, mild in the black. The corn chips are super crunchy. We decided to give this place a second try. I ate here 7-8 years ago or whenever it opened and wasn't super impressed, only by the quantity of food mostly. We ordered the tacos de mahi mahi, veggie fajitas with light cheese. No napkins or flatware on the table, even after the chips and salsa were dropped off, what are we animals? I smell another fajita burning. Mine will be stinking about this place in no time. The light cheese on my veggie fajita was still heavy to me, I would hate to imagine what the normal cheese on top might look like. The side of beans are bland and weren't worth eating and the plain white rice I don't get with the fajita, I am to eat the fajita like a stir fry all of a sudden. There was a piece or two of jalapeños in my fajita, though I thought it was green pepper, it wasn't all green pepper and my tongue is still feeling it after finishing up the fajita. The mahi Taco was the better of or two meals. Big pieces and well grilled. The side of rice and refried beans were just so-so. Garbage. Don't do it. Right from the beginning, I knew this was going to be a mistake. The staff was slow and aloof, chips stale and tasteless. We started with a small botana and a chili relleno with rice and beans. We had intended to get the fajitas, but thought we'd pace ourselves. The botana usually comes with pork chorizo but we don't eat pork. So we asked to add chicken instead. Its as if the kitchen didn't know how to think outside the menu and cook Mexican inspired food. The botana was flavorless with boiled chicken. How does one mess this up. They charge for chicken which was scarce. The chili relleno was buried in a mound of rubbery egg batter. Then stewed in a tasteless orangey colored canned enchilada sauce with wilder green powers and onions. It looked like someone vomited on the plate. This was a waste of $30. Hours say they close at 10pm on Fridays. Called to ask when kitchen closes , they said 9:30pm on phone. Arrived at 8:30pm and wait staff immediately tells us we have to order fast, kitchen closes in 30 min. We ordered drinks before even sitting down, when drinks were brought we were reminded AGAIN that kitchen closes soon. We rushed eating while entire staff was sweeping around us and turned other customers away that arrived saying "they were closing early because they were slow". I was solo and seated at the bar, which was disgusting and never cleaned, the entire time I was there. I mentioned it to the bartender as she handed me an equally disgustingly stained menu. Despite being in Royal Oak, there weren't any vegan options but that was not a problem because the dirty environment had mostly killed my appetite. I ordered the "House" Margarita and a "small" guacamole. The Margarita was actually really good, the bartender was nice but at $10.00, the dinky serving of so-so guacamole and stale chips was overpriced. I noticed on my way out that despite being Saturday night, only a handful of booths were in use and the floor was pretty disgusting. With the front of the restaurant so dirty, I can't help but wonder what the food prep areas are like. You have to watch your bill like a hawk at this place The food was fair to better... Order was messed up on plates... Weider tried to reverse it like it was our problem... Four people the waiter assessed 20% gratuity added to the bottom of the bill... Each item on the bill was bumped a dollar from the menu price I understand from COVID that things like this are happening so I'm understanding but the gratuity for four people if I didn't catch it I would have gave him another 20% on top of it and they know perfectly well what they're doing down there....
