I saw a post about the sufganiyot, which is a doughnut that had to be tried! Today they had them so I initially ordered one of each and told I needed two of each since it's a four pack. Sounds good! Two jelly and two custard. I asked where they came from and was told they come frozen from Israel. Quite the journey! To eat them, they can be left out or warmed in the microwave. When I got home, I had to try one so custard was the winner. 12 seconds in the microwave and it's transformed into a light treat with a nice creamy filling. Not overly sweet either. A cup of coffee would be even better. Do stop by here and support this great local business. Last year, I picked up a chocolate babka that the hubby loved. I'll be back next week for it! The menu is kind of simple: your choice of meat, which you can get as a sandwich or a plate. Unfortunately, they were out of kabobs when we went, which was my first choice. I went with the chicken schnitzel as a plate because I was interested in the various salads. I chose rice instead of fries, and they gave me a ton of rice! Everything was made to order. The schnitzel was pounded flat and delicious. I liked a lot of the side salads, including one that was red cabbage-based. I bought something similar at the market - hoping it tastes as good. This place is not fancy on the inside, with long group tables, but there were a lot of people coming in either eating lunch there or grabbing it to go. I enjoyed what I ate and will want to come back and try something else next time (hopefully the kabobs).

This review, however, is about their bagels specifically, which clock in at 3 stars. The bagels feel as if someone read a description of a New York bagel and did their best to recreate it without being totally sure they'd hit the mark. Crisp crust? Dense crumb? Malty flavor? The bagel ticks all the boxes. Yet, each aspect is slightly off. The crust was almost comically thick and took a serious bite to break through. (I guess the bakers got too enthusiastic with the water bath.) The crumb was tight but came off more as dry than chewy. And the malt syrup was poured with a liberal hand -- there is no subtlety to the flavor. To their credit, the cream cheese is well paired. It brings its own flavor with a noticeable tang, and it is dense. You need a bagel that will hold up under the pressure of a knife while spreading the thick schmear. I love that Saul's is making bagels in house now, but I think I will look elsewhere on their menu for the real comfort foods.
