Best hummus I've had so far, there's some ingredients that made it tasted so good. Tabouli was great. I had the Kofta plate and my husband had the chicken kabob (the cubes), and I think they are better than the ones I've had before from other restaurants, their food just tastes very home made. Loved it! The owner was at the grill making dinner. He's been working at this location for over 24 years! The owner recommended the platter - and the price is one of the best you will find for the portion size / quality in DFW. The soup is strongly recommended - I can see it quickly becoming a winter favorite. Plenty of spice that grows in flavor as you reach the bottom of the bowl. As most have said in reviews, don't come for the atmosphere. The place hasn't been painted since the 80s, and the front door was propped open. But, the food is great. Wow! This was great food. I had the meat platter; it came with a chicken kebab, lamb kebab and beef ladra kebab. And if that was not enough, it also came with hummus, pita and tabbouli. And then, they threw in some delicious lentil soup. All for $20.00! Everything was delicious, especially the chicken. It was also enough for 2 meals so it's a great deal. The owner claims that his hummus is the best in Dallas. I compared it to the hummus I ate in Israel & his came out on top. I ordered the platter & will do so in the future. Really good food all run by the sole proprietor. I ordered the shish tawook platter which came with the tabouli, hummus, rice, and lentil soup. I also ordered a side of falafel and a chicken schwarma. Everything was excellent and made to order. The chicken was tender, the hummus was creamy, and tabouli was extra good. His lentil soup isn't blended like some other places. It's a tomato based broth and bursting with flavor. Friendly Syrian guy with his Lebanese wife runs this place, offering basic Middle Eastern and American bites (the menu is small and there's not much in what they have to offer). Lentil soup was spicy and had flavorful broth even though the vegetables were bland, possibly because it was boiled into the soup too long. Shish tawook (chicken) was spicy (and even more so than the soup) and on top of plain white basmati rice. There's no vermicelli, almonds, or any other flavoring in the rice. The spicy tawook wasn't traditional since I've never had it as spicy as this place made it in any other place but I do have to admit that the chicken pieces itself were perfectly tender and juicy. Scrap some of the spices off onto the rice, to create a balanced flavor profile and to lessen the spiciness - but having to do this takes away the charm of appreciating good cooking as is. I do must have to say though that the hummus (topped with 7 spices) and the tabbouli were both among the freshest and the perfect batch I've had so far in Dallas. So if I do come back again, I'd probably stick with the mezzes (tapas or small plates). If I was going to go big, I would try out the kafta kabobs and try to get the rice to be swapped for something else. I skipped dessert, which is baklava. This place definitely looks like a front for some fraudulent activity. The meat was cooked, so that's a plus. Everything else tasted as if it was store bought and sold off as "homemade". I should have known to pass this place up as there were no other patrons. There was however, 3 men in the rear smoking hookah, laying on the chairs, and the other on the computer. The "owner", I'm assuming, was not very compromising on the meals as we wanted a substitution and were willing to pay the difference. I came to Texas from Philadelphia PA for tattoos with Ray Corson at Pristine Ink and on the first night saw this restaurant was near my hotel and decided to give them a try because it was so affordable. A mom and pop restaurant that is very modest and humble in appearance when you walk in, but the food is absolutely DEVINE. They simply don't make food like this anymore. It's unquestionable that the owners cook with their hearts, the food is so flavorful and perfectly done, I was literally moaning the entire time I was eating that first night. But I didn't just eat there the first night of my trip, I came back the second night, and I'm back again now on the fourth afternoon after checking out of my hotel before having to go to the airport. The food is simply to die for. And the owners are so friendly, cheerful, and sweet-- I wish I could put them in my pocket and take them home with me!! Suggested I try the platter since it was my first time which came with chicken, rice, pita, hummus, and a Greek salad side dish(can't remember the proper name), along with a lentil soup. I went there to pickup a PICKUP order that was ordered on Doordash and the employee, an older sweaty male, insisted that i needed to work for doordash to pickup a door dash order, which isn't the case. He then rolled his eyes at me multiple times while i was trying to explain and then put his arms up in an aggressive nature and said just take it, take it. Very, very rude man who doesn't know how to treat customers. Unsure if he is the owner (I hope not). And they aren't lying when they say this is a "low-key" restaurant.....that's at the very best. Very poorly decorated in an old building with a hostile old man that thinks he knows everything. Be nice to customers....it's your job! Ah, and as for the food, not bad, but not great. I'm a vegan and I like Mediterranean food as there are lots of veggies and of course the salads like tabouleh and pita bread with hummus or baba gnoush. Here at The Grand Cafe I tried the falafel platter ($10.81 with tax). The vegetable soup was interesting at first but too rich to eat much. The falafel (fried veggie patty) is almost tasteless except for an odd burned flavor (old oil perhaps?). The hummus and tabouleh neither are very flavorful and the tabouleh has lots of raw onions. Both the tabouleh and hummus each have about a 1/4 cup excess olive oil on them (see my photo). The staff are very kind and very concerned and helpful. It's a hole in the wall type of place with a huge couch one one wall so you can sit at tables comfortably. Overall I wish I liked the food more but I really don't care for it. There are lots of great reviews by carnivores and I don't doubt that much of their meat dishes are very good. But if you are a vegetarian or vegan I don't think you'll be happy here. read more
