I have tried matcha from almost every place that sells matcha in Sonoma county, truly I have tried a ridiculous amount of matcha places. This was the absolute worst matcha I have ever had. It was basically iced milk with the tiniest dab of strawberry and an even tinier dab of matcha. They have seating indoors as well as outdoors and you can't beat the river views! They have both tables and Adirondack chairs located outside. Order was wrong - I ordered empanadas to go...they came hot and the bottom of the beef one was soaked in grease making it soggy and inedible. I threw it all out before I got home. All of the chai and the empanadas minus a bite of each. Ordering at the counter, we ordered our coffee drinks, mine hot and my partner's iced plus some food to go. We thought our drink order came out wrong for my partner, and they were kind enough to fix it. However, my drink (a specialty one so I felt bad asking) came out iced instead of hot. Secondly, the food was subpar. Our empanadas were warmed up to go however, the filling was lacking. My partner and I took one bite of the churro and threw it out. It was chewy and hard to bite into. The back patio area with the river view was lovely. Lots of seating and very family friendly. I ordered the strawberry matcha, but it was so watery that I had to ask for a different drink. It also did not taste like strawberry. I feel like just by looking at the photo of the matcha you get the gist of how it tasted (it looks very diluted). Their coffees and their ice teas are lovely. Their pastries tempt. The Grand Central Cafe' offers a wide variety. I eat a lemon fruit tart, the perfect compliment to have with a wet cappuccino. The ambience inside and out is beautiful. They have the perfect spot on the Petaluma River for sitting beside. My friend and I enjoyed a long chat at a round table, under a wide umbrella. I liked the way the menu was set up unfortunately my drink was nasty. I ordered the lychee matcha because I've never seen it elsewhere. I had high hopes because it was also promoted as ceremonial grade matcha but it took about 20+ minutes to get our order. The matcha was grainy not very much lychee flavor and not even a hit of sweetness. They did add a lychee in the drink so I guess that's what made it a lychee matcha. One of the greatest places in Petaluma. The ambiance is amazing. They have a patio that overlooks the river with benches and hammocks. They have a little play area for kids and it's so nice to hang out there on a sunny day. The food is excellent. Especially the empanadas. I do have to say that they are pricey for the amount you get. The empanadas are pretty small and are about $6 each. But they are very very good. Their pastries are also tasty and they have AMAZING chocolate, in case you are a chocolate aficionado like I am The staff is ALWAYS super friendly. One of my favorite things about this place. I'll start with the coffee - Grand Central has some kind of magic mixologist who keeps coming up with these divine coffee concepts!! I don't normally like flavored lattes etc but these are different. The Horchata Latte, one that has Bourbon flavor and Maple, Cardamom Latte, their Pumpkin Spice Latte is not some sickly sweet syrup its pumpkin puree and spices. Then there is Grand Centrals commitment to the community! I've seen the first 5 minute plays show there, meetings, art, always kids events and parents. Their merchandise is mostly made locally and all made ethically. They sell LaLa's jam and the baked goods will make you love vegan desserts! I really wanted to like this cute spot because it was dog friendly but it was a no for us. Our drinks were not good at all. My bfs drink was an iced horchata drink super sweet he had to let the ice melt and even then it was still too sweet. I ordered a caramel latte and didnt taste anything like it. I ordered a ham and cheese emapanda they were okay nothing to brag about. The service was okay the girl that took my order was very nice and welcoming. It did take awhile for my drinks to be made. We were on the hunt for decent coffee and a pastry that did not come from corporate America. The reviews looked good so we added 15 minutes to our trip to divert into Petaluma. The people serving were very friendly, which is what earned the two stars. The pastry selection was quite slim. Neither I or my wife took more than one bite of the pastries we selected. Our best guess is that they came frozen from a central kitchen somewhere. Not tasty. The plain drip coffee also nothing to write home about. Also...the purple cup thing. To go orders automatically get poured in to purple plastic cup that can be returned and reused within the city of Petaluma. While the goal of that program is admirable, as I am all about sustainability, we don't use plastic cups period. The server should make people aware of that and offer a different solution. In this case, I would have walked back to the car and grabbed a cup. This is particularly important because we are now here 180 miles away and stuck with a plastic purple cup. read more

It could be easy to miss Grand Central if you're not looking out for it. Tucked on a side street between the transit station and Downtown, it's easily missed, but it's definitely worth the detour. Joey was kind enough to welcome us, even though we arrived about five minutes before they closed on Friday. He gave us time to glance around the shop and review the menu. I ordered a mocha and found it quite tasty. You can taste the quality of the chocolate in their mochas and it has less of a sweet finish and more of the nutty, complex flavor you get with a higher cacao percentage. I'll also say, it packed more of a caffeine punch than your standard issue coffee! The shop has a variety of chocolates of different flavors and sizes, plus a menu I'd love to sample more thoroughly when I return. I chose the organic chocolate coffee flavored mini bar and wasn't disappointed. There's a depth of flavor to the chocolate and the coffee bean pieces that are mixed in give it a fun crunch and add to the flavor. A great choice for chocolate and coffee connoisseurs! I was passing through this area and was looking for a local coffee spot, and came across Grand Central Petaluma. I always love to support small, local business. They have all your traditional coffee and espresso offerings, and a specialized menu. They also have a seasonal menu. I decided to try the Horchatta latte with almond milk. They make the horchatta in-house and it is definitely on the lighter side. Drinks are not super sweet, so if you're looking for the stereotypical sweet factor you get from a lot of the chain coffee spots, you may need to request more sweetness. Generally horchata can be very sweet, but their version was light, so I actually did need a little more. However, they were very kind to add more without any hesitation. The espresso or coffee was also a bit lighter than I anticipated, but there was no burnt taste and the flavor was clean, which are my top preferences. Besides coffee, they do have some empanadas and sweet treats. I didn't pay too close attention to the offerings since I wasn't partaking in these items. I was able to meet the owner Juan Carlos while I was there. He's originally from Ecuador with an extensive background working with cacao. The coffee shop also has goods from travels and other countries, as well as local made gifts and sundries. The staff was friendly and they had indoor and outdoor seating. The outdoor area in the back has adirondacks facing the river, as well as a play area for kids. There's also a couple of tables out back. Plenty of parking on the street and the side of the building as well.
