2 words: Mexican Diner. Me and my friend stop by because it's the only restaurant in the area open at 10 pm that accepts card. Odd. It's NYC. On a Saturday and restaurants are closed. We walk in and wait to be sat. Fucking crickets. Then it occurs to my friend, maybe you seat yourself? So we awkwardly shuffle through the restaurant and seat ourselves. Not even a second later and a waiter comes with menus. Cool. Next time post a sign on the door saying "self seating" so I don't look like an ass waiting 15 mins to be sat. Waiter was friendly and chirpy. Kudos to him. He must have been working a long shift and still smiling and being peppy. I get the combo which was the burritos with a hard shell taco. I tell him I don't want a hard shell. Mister waiter then tells me, he can fix it for me and do it with soft flour tortillas. Um, thanks. All I asked was for a substitution. Don't act like you're doing this great big service to me. Food takes forever to come. But there is a highlight! I asked if they have green hot sauce and he said yes! He brought this huge bowl of hot sauce. Not that skimpy little dish they usually put it in. And then says "if you want more, let me know." Is this was love feels like? Lmfao. Food sucked. You know the type of crap you put into your body when you're drunk? Don't care what it is, you just want to shove your body with grease and every fattening food under the sun? This is that place. The burrito wasn't even a burrito. It was some half assed wrap with a shitload of cheese on top. Like to a point it was absurd. WHO EATS ALL THAT CHEESE?? Taco was decent but so mediocre. Where's the salsa? It was literally just tough meat, with a pile of lettuce topped with a ludicrous amount of cheese again. The meat was too salty and I just couldn't finish it. It's a shame because the prices are dirt cheap. Single burrito is under $6. Even Chitpole isn't that cheap. We get our check and tip is already included. Why? It's just 2 people. I'm writing this review to bring to light the shady business practices that we encountered at Grand Morelos. The first time we came here, it was late and we were just happy to find someplace open near us. We ordered some hamburgers and a couple beers. The order came out to over $50, which immediately set off my math alarm. "Maybe this is one of those places that charges an arm and a leg for a beer." So be it, I should have asked how much the beers were before we ordered two. The 2nd time we come here after a late event, same order. One veggie burger, one cheeseburger. Checking what our total should be before tax and tip, I know it should be $23.75. Well when the bill finally arrives, somehow my base amount is $30.08, with a extra 4% customer service fee, bringing my total (apparently before tip) to $31.28. Now how did we jump from $23.75, all the way up to $30.08, and what is the 4% customer service charge? When we asked our waiter to bring an itemized bill showing how we got up to that number, lo and behold an almost 18% gratuity had already been added us without our knowledge. The kicker, is that you would never know this, and the bill they DO bring you has suggested tip amounts so you likely (as I did) will end giving two tips. This is in fact illegal to add a gratuity to a customer's credit card without their knowledge. If it was listed as a SERVICE FEE, that would be ok according to NY law, but they already had a service fee as a separate charge on our bill. If you do eat here, check your bill and ask for an itemized receipt. The workers were absolutely double dipping at the customer's expense. read more

I've used DoorDash to get their food delivered to my old office, so why not stop by and see what their service is all about. The service here is good, you walk in, choose your seat, someone comes over and gets you situated with all the things you need. It's got a real local vibe... I wouldn't travel or go out of my way to eat here. Their tacos are good ... I recommend getting al pastor tacos if you're in the mood for tacos. There aren't too many places like Grand Morelos around anymore. Where else does one find a joint doubles as a bakery and serves diner style Mexican food 24 hours a day? Not often in Billyburg, not often enough in the rest of the Latin hoods of Queens and Brooklyn. I've had some real goldmine moments here: 1) scoring a late night birthday cake for a party that didn't start till after midnight 2) finding this place after "street side tacos in the rain" just didn't sound appealing or 3) a late night enchilada when no other place would serve it. And while all of my experiences seem to be in the dead of the night, I can definitely say that Grand Morelos is not my thing in the afternoon. Why? Because the food is really only somewhere in the middle; a satisfactory Mexican meal when there is no other choice. It might be crowded (at least the day I went) in the day time, but like one's favorite neighborhood bar, only the real fun happens at night. Take for my first time here: a drunken Mexican man was arguing in Spanish with a woman over the counter about how he wanted sopa azteca (tortilla soup), but came away empty handed ... but not entirely. He eventually sat down and took a few bites of someone's food, while that person went to the bathroom, which caused a (hilarious) ruckus all on it's own. Or my most recent experience around 2AM: a group of young guys very loudly strike up a conversation about how difficult Spanish words are and how unflattering they sound when bothering to make an attempt. One orders in quite possibly the most awful sounding Spanish ever (Something along the lines of Twitter/@ElBloombito), to which the waitress understood all, prompting a roar of laughter from the group. The premise is usually the same for every visit. It's well past the stroke midnight, I've had a little bit in me, and I'm usually with a group of folks who are in the same predicament. That's when their flautas and enchiladas come to the rescue, filling our tummies with of all carby goodness with dazzling side of habanero and chipotle. The hearty nacho platter is also a solid pick, a greasy pile of tortilla chips doused in cheese, guacamole, crema, pico de gallo, and a protein of choice that would make any bar junk food fan proud. Avoid the burritos, go with their steamed tamales (of which YMMV on whether or not it'll maintain form and not fall apart) and the safest meats would be carnitas and chorizo - all other forms of carne have been dry and bland from my experience. This isn't the kind of Mexican food any California/Texas person is going to love. It's just inexpensive Mexican food available to the masses at all hours (including the ungodly) with an addition of a bakery. It's spacious enough for big groups and though the service is a bit slow at times, it does the job when the only other alternative is a divey deli or a dumpy diner. Orale! read more

With particular emphasis on the nachos- with some sort of witchcraft, the nachos here stay crispy and crunchy despite being loaded with whatever cheese and other goodness you ask for. Comfortable booths and a large menu spanning Mexican and American food pretty much guarantee if you come with a group everyone will find something they like on the menu. Tragic huevos rancheros. Fantastic, enormous tacos at $2.50 a piece. Slowest service evooorrrr. These were all mental notes zipping through my head as I sat in a rigid plastic booth picking at my sad breakfast of a fried egg over a stale tostada.
