    Arepa Cheeseburger

I discovered Palenque Empanadas & Arepas at Bryant Park's Winter Village, and wow--what an incredible first experience! I ordered the 3-empanada combo for $15 and chose the braised angus beef & potatoes, chicken & potatoes, and cheese. The chicken was my favorite, followed by the cheese, then the beef. I'm used to ground beef in empanadas, so the pulled beef filling was new to me. It was still good--just not quite as irresistible as the other two. The real star, though, was the empanada dough. Their house-signature multi-grain masa dough (a mix of organic brown rice, quinoa, flax, sesame, and chia seeds) is unlike anything I've ever had. Crispy, flavorful, and totally unique--absolutely AMAZING. Paired with their homemade aji sauce and chipotle mayo, these empanadas were next-level. I also tried the Arepa Cheeseburger for $15--grilled corn arepa, angus beef, mozzarella, chipotle mayo, and cilantro mayo--and it was FANTASTIC. The sweet corn arepa cake made a surprisingly perfect (and deliciously different) bun for the juicy, well-seasoned burger. I'd never had an arepa before visiting Palenque, and now I'm officially obsessed. I'll be looking for more arepas locally because... wow. Arepas are SO GOOD. The staff were friendly, the food came out quickly, and the prices were exactly what you'd expect at a community festival in Manhattan. My total was $39.19 including tip, and I left very happy with my lunch. I also heard they have a brick-and-mortar location in Brooklyn, which instantly went on my list. It might just be worth planning an adventure to check it out--because if their restaurant food is anything like what I had at Winterfest, it's bound to be incredible. If you see Palenque pop up at a festival or event--or if you're close enough to visit their Brooklyn spot--go. Their empanadas and arepas are truly something special.

I'm not sure this counts because I ordered their food at a stall at the christmas market at bryant park but their beef & potatoes empanadas are the best colombian food that I've tried, both in the states and in Colombia.

When passing by the plentiful Colombian restaurants along Bergenline Avenue, perhaps the most frequently advertised dish I've seen is bandeja paisa. Given how meat-centered it is traditionally, I never gave those ads much attention until I decided on a whim to swap out a planned mushroom arepa for a vegan version of the traditional dish at a recent dinner, here at Palenque right in East Williamsburg. Bandeja paisa is a generous Colombian thali of sorts - I suspect the version at Palenque includes far more in terms of greens than is traditional, but otherwise features some of the typical staples like plantains and rice topped with a sunny side up egg. They replace meat with a delicious stewed jackfruit served with a mild tomato chutney called hogao, which for me was the star of the show. Definitely a dinner for a day when you've worked up a significant appetite.

We tried Palenque's empanadas at their Bryant Park Christmas market location. I was shocked to find some gluten free empanadas with different masa. The masa wasn't the best I've ever tried as I prefer normal empanadas but they were very rich. The options were amazing and the meat was very tasty. I really liked the salsa options too and chose a green salsa. The Bryant Park location was very cool for the Christmas market. The service was very fast and the workers helped us choose empanadas and a salsa to go with our food. It was slightly hard to find a place to sit but that's not on Palenque.

    Yuca fries

While there was an abundance of food options at Bryant Park Winter Village, what caught my eye was the yuca fries from Palenque BBQ. I've eaten plain yuca fries before, but Palenque's yuca fries took it to a whole new level with a rainbow of toppings. Sharing these fries among four people was the right move. Our serving included about eight thick fries, served piping hot, and smothered in creamy and spicy red and green sauces. Topped with cotija cheese, the fries nearly made a complete meal. Served in a flimsy cardboard box with wooden toothpicks, the yuca fries were difficult to eat, especially because they were so thick (and some were a bit tough). Fortunately, we had grabbed plenty of napkins and inhaled the fries right on the spot. I'm definitely glad I gave the fries a try!

Delicious freshly prepared authentic Colombia food and drinks. Service was outstanding. She was super friendly and patient. Beautiful decor full of nature and plants. Such a relaxing place to grab a drink and small bites. Extremely clean

We stopped by and saw an arepa spot. They had just opened up. The lady that was there was so nice and she spoke spanish as well. She told us that since we got there early the yuca fries had to defrost so we just got an arepa instead. We also got a guava paste which was delicious. The food came out pretty fast and the service was great

I love this restaurant. The food is amazing, unique and so filling. I always get the chicken arepa (on a corn arepa) and it's incredible. Next time, I want to try the shrimp arepa. Really good cilantro sauce. I also got a passion fruit juice which was super good. One of the only good restaurants in the neighborhood that's open on Mondays. The service is great. Fantastic ambiance.

Delicious authentic Colombian food! Also love the decor and natural lighting. Shared the soup and plate with one other and it was more than enough. Juices were great as well :)

I didn't go to the actual restaurant I was at the beach and they had a small table set up. They workers were really nice. I really enjoyed their beef empanada the 5 grain dough gave it a unique and interesting flavor and texture. I also got their agua de panela (sugar cane lemonade and ginger) it tasted good but too just really regular I could buy and Arizona that tastes the same way.

Stopped by as I was walking past Palenque because I couldn't resist my craving for arepas and yuca fries. Really enjoyed the flavors of the vegan chorizo and salsas of the arepa, and the yuca fries were well done (though I wish I asked for extra sauce because that was very tasty). Would definitely return to try more items off the menu.

It's nothing fancy to see from the street or when you walk inside, but they are the nicest people in here and they prepare food that tastes homemade. I ordered the beef stew to go and sat down at one of the dozen or so tables. The kitchen is on the right side and to the rear behind the counter. A steady stream of people are coming through while I wait on this Friday evening around 7:30 or 8:00. A couple is in here eating dinner and it's a calm evening. The hospitable woman working here who took my order told me the dish is served with a sweet plantain, but I didn't realize it was a whole plantain sliced in half lengthwise until I got home. You get the sweet plantain over rice with the savory beef stew in a separate container to pour over the rice and plantain. I wish I had taken a picture of it all before devouring it. The beef stew is tender and savory. I only wish they were more generous with the beef. There are potatoes and carrots in there and probably onions that have been cooked down and hidden in the thick gravy. I can see eating this year round, particularly on a cold snowy day in February, hard to imagine this summer with temperatures regularly hitting the nineties. The restaurant is kept clean and orderly and I imagine the rest of the menu is very satisfying. 3.7 stars!
