After having dinner at Punch Pizza across the street, my husband and I walked along Grand Avenue when we saw this place. There was a line going out the door and I didn't know if it was worth it to stand in line. I was discussing this with my husband when the guy in front of us told us it was worth the wait because the ice cream was that good. So we decided to try it. The wait wasn't too bad. They had so many great-sounding flavors. I decided to get the coconut chip and it was AMAZING. It was rich and creamy and tasted like the real natural coconut flavor, not the artificial candy kind. It was a good sized scoop, too. My husband got the five scoop sampler and I don't remember what flavors he got but he really loved them. It was too much ice cream for him but he managed to finish it all. It tasted so all-natural and not artificial. I can see why they charge so much. It was a nice tasty treat. I only wish I could have brought a pint back with me to Des Moines. I'll have to come back here the next time I'm in St. Paul. read more

This is the place to go if you're a visiting dignitary, politician, or any other big wig. I would know, because I am one. I'm just a really big wig. A massively huge wig. If you compare a small or medium purchase here to buying a pint from a grocery store, a nice pint like Häagen-Dazs or better for $6-9, it's still pricey. But it's the best old timey sort of vibe you can get (ditch the TV, please) and you can take it outside for the six months of the year when the weather is warm enough. Service is usually good. They hire the local kids usually, and most of them know how to smile and listen and be generous servers. I've only had maybe one poor experience in about 25 years of coming here, so that's a good ratio. And that experience was remedied by management. There were plenty of people working behind the counter, and they were fast at tending to the guests. The place was steadily busy the entire time we were there. The lime sherbet was very artificial tasting and for the first time ever, tasted too much like kitchen cleaner; in a bad way. The s'mores didn't really have that familiar s'more's flavor. Coconut chip was nice in flavor. Black cherry, can never be wrong. The shop was quiet, a bit dark inside but nice and cool with the AC. More than a handful for sidewalk tables available and right nearby a few different food restaurants, if you wanted to grab dinner beforehand. Went mid-day so parking was easy and with the nice weather the outdoor seating was a great way to bask in some sun and ice cream. Eating ice cream outside though did melt the ice cream quickly. Service was prompt and staff was friendly for an afternoon lull in customers. It's a bit dark inside especially compared to the contrast to BIGE that's connected through an arch in the wall. Everyone goes to Grand for the ice cream, but the pizza is amazing and totally overlooked. They have a 2 slice and a drink deal for under $10. The slices are huge and you can choose up to 2 topping on each slice. Pizza is new York style. They use fresh ingredients and have a good selection of toppings. We usually eat one slice there and save the other for later to save room for ice cream. The pizza side is usually much quieter than the ice cream side. The service here is fast, friendly, and efficient. There are tables both inside and out which is nice. The prices are a tad high, but the ice cream servings are enormous, really a bit too large. On our recent visit I tried a split single of the peach and the key lime pie on a standard sugar cone. This wound up being 4 fairly large scoops of ice cream pushed on to a sugar cone. For my taste too much ice cream. Really I know, who says too much to ice cream? I'm very glad I didn't order 2 scoops. The ice cream texture is rich and creamy, but really a bit bland. The peach had large chunks of peaches but was so sweet and had enough vanilla in it that the flavor or the peaches just didn't shine through. The key lime lacked any tartness that you would expect at all. The lime flavor seemed to come only from peel and not from any lime juice. read more

Don't be alarmed by the wait time though because everyone in line knows what's up and what's up is that the Grand Old Creamery has great ice-cream. The flavors rotate based on supply however they always have the classic's. I'm talking Chocolate Peanut Butter, Cookie Dough, Salted Carmel, Cheesecake and that's NOT all folks, there are plenty more. One of the coolest things about GOC is that they make for waffle cones right in front of you. In my mind the waffle cones are so good that they will always be worth the extra money. And about the money. The prices would make even Jordan Belford (the wolf of wall street) cringe but they are much more bearable when you see the portion sizes.
